My wife and myself finally made it to the Smoke Pit tonight. The wait wasn't Long at all. Our server was great. The food was better than expected. Very neat place inside. Suited for everyone. 2 words: Burnt ends! Amazingly tender inside and crispy where they should be. My son and I split a medium portion but a small may have been enough! My mother is in hospice and is barely eating. But one day she said she wanted cornbread and collard greens. So I went out and came across Smoke Pit. I picked up the BBQ wings platter with sweet potatoes, collard greens, Mac and cheese, and an order of corn bread. She really enjoyed that meal after a few weeks of not being able to eat really much of anything -- and certainly not enjoying what she was eating. She kept talking about how tasty everything was --especially the corn bread. I am so grateful that I was able to find home cooking at Smoke Pit and that my mom and I were able to enjoy a delicious meal together that was as good as she used to make me (but don't tell her I said that!). Wow. This restaurant serves on flavor and hospitality! We came here with my pirate group after an event. Let me tell you. I've had a lot of bad experiences with restaurants trying to serve 20 rowdy pirates, but the Smoke Pit excelled. We got done early and moved up our arrival time. Not a problem at all. We were still seated right away. And they seemed so excited to have us. Drink orders were quick and an appetizer came out fast while we waited for all of our group to arrive. They were able to answer our questions about the menu and even brought out a sample of the casserole of the day which was a hashbrown casserole. The server helped me narrow my choice to the jumbo wing combo verses the chicken quarters based on my preference to white meat. My order was a jumbo chicken wing combo in Bama sauce with sides of collard greens and the hashbrown casserole. I also added a piece of cornbread. The wings were huge. They had a smokey taste. Some pieces were more tender than others. I wish there was more sauce on them. They were still good, but I probably should have gone with a different sauce. The collard greens were delicious. Plenty of pork mixed in giving it a smoky sweet taste and a little bit of heat. The hashbrown casserole was heaven. It was creamy and cheesy - the best hashbrown casserole I've ever had. The serving sizes were huge. Almost everyone took home leftovers. Like one ou group members said, "If you leave hungry, it's your own fault!" Props to our servers. At this restaurant you will find a plethora of sausage to choose from. You can have sizzling, Carolina mustard, Lexington vinegar, or sweet barbecue sauce. OK, I was a novice I have never had deep-fried pickles. They were so delicious I will have to get those again. I got the three amigos plate for 21.95. This included two pieces of brisket two pieces of ribs and a bowl full of pulled pork. So I tried all the different sauces and found that the sweet sauce was good on the brisket and on the porch if the mustard-based Carolina sauce was better. Great place to go. I came to NC to visit family and take care of personal business. When we arrived we were trying to figure where to eat and got a recommendation to eat here. OMG, everything we ordered was delicious! We went inside and ordered other family meal to go, we had a slab of ribs, a pint of macaroni & cheese, the delicious sweet potatoes with pecans and added a small order of green beans and 1/4 pd of brisket and cornbread. First thing the Corn bread wasn't even warm. It wasn't worth it to tell her. She should of known when the cast iron skillet wasn't even warm. It was obvious our waitress didn't want to be there. Southern hospitality *and* legit BBQ... score! We had the fried pickle appetizer (ordered 2... one is enough to feed an army), and the BBQ platter/plate, which is listed as serving 6-8. Our party of 7 ate one of the pickle appetizers and enough food to hold us over for an entire week... and still had about half of the platter left to take home. This place is so over hyped, and over priced. In Salisbury you don't have many dining choices, so we ended up here a few times. The bbq is mediocre. A lot of the time it's very dry. Mixed bag. Positives. 1. Cheerwine with real sugar in a bottle. 2. The turkey and sausage and pulled pork were all excellent (each 4 or 5 out of 5). As were the sweet potato tater tots (4.5/5). As was the cornbread with Snickerdoodle-like butter (5/5). The ribs were good (3.5/5). Negatives: 1. No diet cheerwine. Hey Smoke Pit, you are located in the Salisbury, the home of Cheerwine, not having Cheerwine and diet Cheerwine fountain drinks is basically inexcusable. 2.The brisket was HORRIBLE!--Basically inedible. We were served a pound or so of sliced brisket that was basically 70 to 80% fat with very little meat. Inwxcusable also. Suggestion: perhaps take a Masterclass with Aaron Franklin (of Franklin Barbecue in Austin TX) and learn how to pick and prepare a proper brisket. 3. We ordered the $99.00 family platter. Our waitress, who did an EXCELLENT job, asked the kitchen at our request if we could substitute the white meat chopped chicken for the leg and thigh chicken on the $99 family platter. Our waitress relayed to us that the kitchen told her this was not possible. I asked our waitress to please ask a manager, and to please let them know that we would be happy to pay an upcharge for the white meat chicken. She came back and said that the general manager said no. I find this type of customer service response--by the general manager (no less)--and to a very reasonable customer request--to be utterly APPALLING! 4. No Lexington-style slaw to accompany the pulled pork. Also inexcusable in my opinion given the locale. Thus the two star review. read more
