Today, I had the Cajun turkey with sides of Mac and cheese and fried okra. So tasty and every morsel was perfect. There are multiple squeeze bottles of sauces on each table and it's fun to experiment. I tended to favor the mustard based sauce, which is common in this neck of the woods. The fried pickles were good - a little salty but edible. We expected more from the banana pudding...and although I orders peach cobbler, it was subbed for blueberry cobbler without my knowledge. I didn't regret the change though because that blueberry cobbler was everything! I will definitely order again when down south. read more

Yesterday I ordered the "7 Meat Feast" on-line. I received a message shortly thereafter indicating that the order would be ready in 6 minutes, so I left to pick it up. When I arrived at the order pick up location, the employee on duty was taking a phone order. It was obviously an extremely large order (when the employee confirmed the amount of the order it was in excess of $1,400. I could see two orders waiting to be picked up on the back counter. One of them had someone's name on it, and the other did not appear to be so indicated. I had gotten to the store so quickly, I dounted that the order was mine. After the employee completed the large order she was taking, she hung up and told me she would be right back. Subsequently, at least 4 more customers came into the pick up area. The employee was gone for a very long time. When she came back she asked my name. When I told her, she handed me the unmarked order that had been sitting there the whole time. I am a patient person and it did not bother me that I had to wait so long to pick up my order. Realizing that it would have taken 10 seconds to check to see if the order was mine rubbed me the wrong way. At this point, my review was 4.5 stars. I left with my order and once at home, I opened it and set it on the table. The portions of the 5 sides seemed very small compared to the amount of meat. 4. stars. The taste and quality of the 7 meats was great. 5 stars for that. Overall, 4 stars. I will definitely go back to The Smoke Pit. read more

Holy cow! Literally. I've never had good brisket outside of Texas. It's usually tough, tasteless and disappointing. Not this brisket. It's Texas good! Juicy, tender, flavorful. Doesn't really need sauce... but if you want some, they have a slightly hot one that was excellent. And the sides... fun little crunchy hush puppies. A potato salad that rivals my mother's, complete with big hunks of skin-on potatoes and chunks of deviled eggs. Even the pickles and onions were a nice palate cleanser in between bites. I can attest that this place is the real deal. I got a combo plate with brisket and the smoked turkey and both came out moist and flavorful with the pink smoke ring. I really liked the sauces, especially the spicy BBQ. Mac and cheese was on point. The cinnamon butter they serve with the cornbread was great. Very impressed with the operation. Hands-down best BBQ in the state. Five stars for food, service, cleanliness, decor, everything. There was a crazy wait for a table when we got there at like 4pm, and nobody was even mad about it. After a long wait The Smoke Pit in Salisbury is finally open! We stopped by on a weeknight for dinner and I was pretty impressed with my first visit. The Smoke Pit is right downtown with plenty of public parking on the street as well as in a couple of city owned lots. We were delighted to find that there was not a a line and were promptly seated. I was very impressed with the size of the restaurant, spanning over multiple rooms and also having a decent size bar seated area. For an appetizer we had the smoked jalapeño poppers. These were whole jalapeños stuffed with cheese and topped with bacon and drizzled with BBQ sauce. They were very good and very spicy! The jalapeños were served with sour cream, but I think they would have been better with either ranch or a sweet type sauce. The menu says that these are a "while they last" type item so if you come late at night they may be out of these. Being a BBQ place some of the items of course do take a while to cook so this should be as no surprise that they may run out of some items as the day/night goes on, but from reading a few previous reviews I guess this surprises some people. For our entrees I had the burnt ends plate with fried okra and macaroni and cheese with corn bread. My first impression was the incredible mound of food! You will definitely be taking home a to-go box! The burnt ends were very good, properly cooked and my only complain was that they had a little too much sauce on them, but the sauce was pretty good so it would be a small complaint anyway. The sides were both pretty appetizing as well. The corn bread was a huge slice, and was slightly more sweet than I expected, but very tasty. They also provide multiple sauces on the table to try which is a nice touch, I just wish they had been labeled. I really liked one, however another tasted a little too much like cocktail sauce, but I am not sure which is which. My dining partner got the small pulled pork nachos, and just as my entree this was easily enough food for two people. I had a few bites and these were absolutely fantastic. The chips were great and they had just enough kick to them without being overly spicy. I do not know that I would be a huge fan of the pulled pork by itself, this is not a knock on their pork I am just relatively picky about my pork barbecue, however combined with everything else on the nachos it was great. Overall, I highly recommend The Smoke Pit and do not believe you will be disappointed. We had great service and great food. I will certainly be back! read more
