First time trying a "beertail" (cocktails made with beer) and it was awesome! I had the Fillmore Shandy made with Scrimshaw Pilsner, house-made ginger syrup, and citrus. It was light, refreshing and I highly recommend it. Their menu also has "Karatetails", beer, sake, wine and some light bites. This bar has a hipster ambiance decorated with books and art on the walls. They also had a movie playing on their wall as well as some games available like "Uno" and "Apples to Apples". While they don't have liquor based cocktails, they have winetails, beertails, and karatetails (soju and sake based!). They also have great food options if you're hungry. Damn, I can totally see myself returning here for both liquor and coffee. This...could be a very bad situation. But the beers and food selection aren't overly pricey, so at least my wallet won't cringe. Much. I walked in, and I swear the place is eclectic to my brain. Random books all over the walls (though, I guess I wouldn't have those med and bio books in my home), rap/hip-hop/R&B with more of the 90's bent, coffee, liquor, and a projector playing Finding Nemo. On repeat. Pretty damn awesome already. Staff here were friendly, but don't come out to the tables to get your order. So...order at the bar. And if you're feeling like a lot of liquor or coffee, sit at the bar. There's just a few things that make it less of a 5 for me. The ceiling foam that looks like it's going to fall on my head at any time...is a bit scary. And the lack of waiter service. I guess its not too bad to walk up to the bar, but the bar also isn't set up for walk-ups...so I have to lean over people to get an order. read more

Came here for a happy hour with a friend, and was pleasantly surprised with the relaxing ambiance that proved conducive for great conversations and drinks. We each had a glass of their sangria ($6) during happy hour; I had a glass of their house white ($7) and my friend had one of their draft beers ($6). Their sangria was tasty! Filled with fruit, and stronger than you think. This is a small place, so probably good for groups of 2-4- more intimate gatherings. I had been to the social study once before the pandemic, but since moving to the area last year, I can now say I am a regular here and am so grateful it is so close to me! Harmony and the staff are so sweet and the selection of coffee, drinks, and food here is incredible. These also have extremely affordable deals most days of the week and the happy hour is awesome! I highly recommend this place to hang with friends, for date night or even to do work! Definitely one of my favorite spots in SF. read more

Came with a group of friends on a weekday evening. The place was fairly busy, given the time and day, but we were able to co-opt a long table for the five of us. I've scoured the menu but can't find the name of the drink I got. It was a winetail though, and while it wasn't the best drink I ever had, it had the ability to get you drunk without even realizing. For wine, it was potent af. Of all the winetails/karatetails my group tried that evening, it was by far the collective favorite of our group. All in all, a nice place to chill before a dinner or show. Came here because I heard about their winetails, but I was disappointed to find that 3/4 of them are prosecco based ones and I hate prosecco. Social Study is a great local spot that has some of the best drink specials I've seen in SF. Seriously - a cider for like four bucks!! The ambiance is really cool, and there's always a good amount of people enjoying a drink. This would make the perfect casual date spot - or a happy hour with friends. The Social Study is a great place to catch up with friends, get to know someone, or even do some work with a glass of wine! My friends and I particularly enjoyed the candle lit ambiance and great music choice! The room isn't huge, but there's a lot of seats and tables (mostly seating 2 people, but 2 long wooden tables for 6+) They're a little limited on their selection of beer on tap but they have a bigger range of bottled beers, wine, and mixed drinks. This place is a vibe inside with the decorations and ambience until u speak to the bartender with the bob. She completely kills the vibe and speaks to everyone like we're inferior to her! You can really tell this place is her entire personality trait and has nothing else going for her lol. Went with my boyfriend in an attempt to have a nice Saturday date night. I had previously done my research to see whether the menu was good before going. I liked the wide selection of wine and the cheaper late night bites. When we went, we were unpleasantly surprised by the lack of seating. We went at 7:00, and found that the menu online was not the same menu they served, and that everything was double or triple the price than stated online. They only had about 1/6 of the items on their online menu. When we asked for the wine that we wanted, the woman was condescending stating they did not have that. We asked if the menu was different on the weekends (maybe we had made a mistake when checking online), and she stated that they had "always been only a beer, wine, sake bar" and that they did not have the wine we wanted. Redundant, I know. Displeased, we did end up leaving and going somewhere else. I would not waste your time going for extremely overpriced "small bites" and "an extensive wine list" that only serves about 15. read more

A chill, almost hidden spot on busy Geary Boulevard, the Social Study draws one in to relax alone or meet friends. The ambiance is of your friend's cool older brother's room. He may collect the vinyl and skateboards which adorn the walls. Two benches on either side of the entrance, a bar on the left (where one orders food and drink) in addition to communal tables, suspended stools and tabletops attached to the wall make up the seating. Look up and one could see the DJ, perhaps that older brother. I ordered the house made limeade which was great, and no food, since I'd recently eaten. A variety of snacks, cheese plate, sandwiches, salads, coffee and a great cocktail and wine list are offered. Great date night or intimate group hangout spot. Drink wise: they have a nice selection of winetails, beertails, karatetails drinks. I liked the karatetails selection. Yummy drinks. Food wise: we tried the veg and chicken sandwiches which were great. Felt very home made and healthy. Good grain bread and decent portion sizes to serve as a pre-dinner snack maybe. The bread pudding was AMAZING!!! Perfect amount of sweetness served with a side of whipped cream. It's delicious! Vibe: the vibe in this place is the best. Cute little spot that has coffee, tea, wine, beer, and a few "study snacks"- small plates and appetizers. You can sit at their bar or at tables and while it doesn't seem like the sitting is ideal for groups, it's a great spot for coming to yourself or with one or two others. I do wish their menu was a little more extensive but the one thing I tried, the pork sliders, were really delicious and honestly a lot better than expected. They were nicely cooked, the sauce was tasty, and the bread was perfect. Definitely would get these again. Also had a glass of sangria which was pretty good and a really nice glass of their Zinfandel. I would be back if I was in the area or wanted a chill place to hang out at or even do a little work. And I've been @ night for meet ups and to support our local DJ's and ordered alchy dranks. The ambiance is always chill. Even when it's crowded, it's still manageable. This place is a bar with a cafe. Its a pretty good place to socialize because the prices are not that expensive and the drinks here are pretty good. The study side might be a bit harder to do here obviously because of the bar and loud music. When they place jazzy music its actually a really good place to just read a book and relax with a cup or tea. I got the chai tea latte and its a bit more gingery than other places so be weary of that! Its still pretty good! Not a 5 star because as a student im looking for a nice place to study but a bit harder with the loud ambience. There are a lot of people here though that are studying. Theres free wifi which is nice, but no outlets. The tables are a bit low for its a little uncomfortable. I think I would like this bar a lot more earlier in the day.. I wasn't really having it when me and my two girlfriends walked in around 9pm on a Friday night and felt like we were entering a club. The music was way too loud for us to talk normally instead of shouting (Origin is just right around the corner if I wanted to do that...) so I think we left a little earlier than we would have liked to. I really like the decor and space of this bar. It's a small, casual spot and it almost feels like it could be someone's room. The "DJ" spot is in this separate room that you can see as you look up towards the ceiling, and there's a cushioned wall with a ton of books on top that have two-person tables and seats that fold in and out of the wall. They have some really good fruity craft cocktails here and a decent selection of wine, but when I came I had the Rekorderlig passionfruit cider! I was actually reallly surprised that a bar in SF serves it as I've only seen and had it internationally, but it's one of my favorites! The bartender suggested I have it with some lemon, so i took his advice and it went really well with the drink. LOVVEEE this place. However disclaimer: definitely not the place for everyone. Music Vibe: When we came on a random week night, there was actually a DJ playing on the second floor. FYI the layout is pretty clever as seen in the photos. He was playing a mix of hip hop, future, etc. basically just up and coming songs that were not every day radio music, which I appreciated. Space Vibe: The place is pretty small, with 2-3 tables fit for groups of 4 or more and side wall seating for plenty of seats for two. However there was a decent bar space and plenty of space in the middle for standing. What I love about this place is its a great weekday night or weekend afternoon place to hang out with some buddies, have a nice date, and just keep things lowkey, where people are composed and not outrageous drunk frat stars. Drink Vibe: note that this is a wine bar so the "hardest" thing they serve is sake or soju. They definitely had a great selection of wines and had some pretty amazing sake cocktails which I would totally go back for. Food: This place does serve food, but did not get a chance to try any so my review is not contingent on the taste of the food served or the selection of food. TLDR: lowkey vibe with some future/upcoming music. The drinks are well made, but it is only a wine bar so no hard alcohol (but they do have sake cocktails, great for date spots or lowkey weekday drinks. read more

The vibe here is subdued but friendly; on any given night you may find the locals gathered round to watch "Fashion Star" and provide their own critique. The Social Study is more like a internet cafe/coffee house by day, but transforms into a wine bar/late night dessert place in the evening. The decor is very studious...as though it is very inductive to studying, yet with the right lighting and glass of wine, it becomes a warm little nook for great chats among friends over wine and cheese. Laptop camper here. While I like the concept of a social hangout space, but something feels like it's missing. The Four Barrel lattes ($4) are excellent but the breakfast pastries (scones, muffins, croissants) are run of the mill. The pound cake ($2) was dense and dry. The morning bun was okay but after heating, was still cold inside. I wouldn't mind getting a sandwich or bagel but they don't have anything besides pastries till evening time. Of course I love the library inspired décor with old books, old albums, and the exposed brick wall. The chairs aren't comfortable. The free wi-fi is fast but there's only one outlet. The DJ booth above is always empty during the day. They play music pretty loud even during the day (when there isn't a DJ), so it's hard to actually study or concentrate. I like The Social Study. It kind of reminds me of Central Perk from Friends by the decor of the place. Very hip and relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy some Four Barrel Coffee or have a few cocktails and bar bites to pass the time. Their cocktails menu categorized into Winetails, Beertails, and Karatetails which drinks are named in reference to The Karate Kid. If a place has drinks called Sweep The Leg and Kobra Kai, I'm already a fan! Of course I went with the Sweep The Leg which has Alakey Soju, thyme, cucumber, lemon, pineapple. It's a very refreshing drink to have and thankfully there was no need to put me in a body bag after finishing it. Another time I came here I had the a Spicy Coke from their Winetails. It's a very interesting mix made up of Port, Four Barrel Espresso, lemon, cane cola. I didn't have a chance to try any of the food but next time I go there I would love to their their Roast Pork Mini Tacos and BLT Bites. They sound really good and would probably pair well with any over their cocktails. If parking was easier in the area during the day, I'd probably visit Social Study more often, but at least at night it's a lot easier to park nearby. It's cool spot to hangout and I highly recommend stopping by here if you're waiting for a table at any of the restaurants nearby like Dosa, Izakaya Kou, or State Bird Provisions. read more

**Review is for the BAR only** Do you know any pranksters? Cuz I do. Two types, in fact - both a prankster and a PranQster. The former thinks he's funny. The latter tastes awesome. Though, I guess I should be thanking the prankster for introducing me to The PranQster. A coffee shop by day and a bar by night, The Social Study is similar to Sugar Cafe down by Union Square (minus the hard alcohol). However, I like the vibe here a lot better. While Sugar Cafe is a little more spacious and trendy, The Social Study is smaller with a much more intimate and mellow vibe. Which, essentially, makes them my kind of spot. Of course, it didn't hurt that the DJ was playing a bunch of 90's hip-hop either. Since we were only stopping in for drinks after having dinner at State Bird, I can't speak to the bar bites listed on the menu (or the cafe offerings, for that matter). However, I did like the selection of beers and wines that were available. Especially the PranQster. The giant ass bottle it came in was a little unexpected ("Dude, it's that small bottle, not the big one."), but it certainly was delicious! With its relaxed ambiance welcoming nature, and relatively cheap prices, I'd definitely come back to The Social Study, whether it be for some coffee, enjoying a drink or two with friends, or to cap off a hot date with a girl.
