My friends and I visited all the local Solvang bakeries in one day to compare and contrast. Solvang Bakery was one of the top two bakeries we visited. Their shop was very cute and their pastries displayed nicely. You could tell that goodies were freshly baked and used better quality ingredients than some of the other local bakeries (where they looked overly greasy and full of artificial colors and flavors). Quick Service, Awesome Almond Danish.

I forget how many times I have actually been to Solvang, but it feels like this last time was my third time, and of course, I remember the quaint, cozy little touristy town aspect of it., even though it was a few years ago since I went here. I wanted to show hubby this neat little place on our way up north, and so after our Santa Barbara trip, we stopped here. We had our late lunch (of which I will review later), and then I was in search of the bakery that I had set foot in so many years ago. I remember my aunt had specifically wanted to find this bakery back when we went together, and she ended up getting several tubs of Danish cookies from this one bakery, which yes, happened to be the Solvang Bakery. So here I was, several years later, searching for the same bakery. I had an image of the inside of the place in my head, and I even went past a couple of bakeries to peek inside, but once I saw this bakery from across the street, I had a feeling it was the same one. So, upon walking inside, of course I knew! I even saw the infamous tubs of cookies I had been searching for, and...wha? $15 for a tub??! In my memory, they had only been around $10, or so I thought. But, I was gifting the tub anyway, so what's $5 more? So, I walked out and held onto the tub of cookies proudly! I had found them! =) Hoorah! read more

Four stars for the cheese and onion bread!! Totally delicious, but very pungent.

You'd think a cheese danish bought at a Danish bakery in a Danish town would be pretty damn good, but mine was barely edible. In fact I threw part of it away. The only good thing I had here was the Danish waffle. Even the pumpkin bread we bought was stale. read more

Came in for a quick breakfast. Got the cheese danish, which was nice and flaky. They were giving out samples of their chocolate chip butter cookies so I took one, even though I'm pretty neutral about cookies in general. It was so good, I ended up buying a bunch as gifts! I really don't get why everyone loves these bakeries in Solvang. The pastries really aren't that great. It's a good place to stop for a snack, but overall, it's very unimpressive. Overall, the service was much better at this place and their selection was much bigger than Olsens. read more

They made our wedding cake (and my parents', too!), and we're still hearing compliments on it nearly 10 years later.

Good selection, but nothing we ate really stood out. Overall quality was good, but I just don't feel it with this place. Serving sizes seemed small too and the prices were just too high for what it was. read more

The cutest bakery in the center of Solvang! We made a pit stop in this town and was pleasantly surprised by this bakery. The staff were super friendly and helped us in choosing pastries to try - the honey almond tart and the Sarah Bernhardt (dark chocolate heavy) were so amazing. read more

I like their apple and cinnamon bread and their Danish waffles. The problem is that it's overpriced and I always get confused when I try to pay for things. The girls at the cash register are very friendly and helpful, but I'd suggest that they have a pricetag on their items. read more

Cute bakery, they have some random things here! We bought an eclair, german chocolate cake, a tin of cookies, and some cinnamon bread. I tried the jalenpeno cheese bread and it was good! I liked how they had samples on the counter, and also the staff was really helpful in suggesting certain pastries to try. The eclair was good, the cake was moist, and the cinnamon bread was very good as well. They have some novelty items here as well, very interesting little shop! This is a favorite stop for my family when we come through Solvang. I LOVE their Chocolate French Macaroons!! I can not, stop in here with out picking a couple up! I have heard they are closing down. I hope I am misinformed, because they are always so nice, and have great selections. Supper yummy treats. read more

This bakery is amazing!!!! We visited several bakeries in Solvang, but this is the only bakery that actually smelled like a bakery.....definitely an appealing aroma! All of their baked goodies looked freshly baked and appetizing. The item we purchased was out of this world! This gem is a go to/don't miss place. Counter staff were very friendly and helpful about explanation of various pastries in display case. Decided to purchase one plastic tub of cookies, plus one (small and large) wrapped in ribbon rectangular tins which were a definate upgrade compared to the tub. All were flakey in texture and the buttery flavors of each cookie a sublime experience. Will return and detour to Solvang when traveling the 101 freeway to Los Angeles. read more

There are so many nice bakeries in Solvang that you can pass this one by with no problem. While they are no better or worse than the others when it comes to their baked goods, I would never go back because of the lousy service. Standing at the cash register for 10-15 minutes while they help people just wandering in and those who crowd to the front, I would think someone who placed items on the counter inbetween two cash registers and is patiently waiting to pay for their goods should be waited on. I guess not. The workers proceeded to flit around and help those who needed help but had some sort of aversion to taking care of the people who just wanted to give them money. The fact that they were also ringing up OTHER customers while I was standing there should have been a BIG clue. That was pretty much when I decided I would never go back...that is if they ever decided to take my money. Right before I was ready to just leave without my purchase, someone actually decided I may have stood there long enough. So, after she helped ring up someone else ahead of me, again, she took my money. By then I was in no mood to even try to be courteous. I figured why bother - I'm never going back anyway. I would highly recommend Birkholm's however for their friendly and efficient customer service and their fantastic baked goods. They are practically next door to The Solvang Bakery so you won't have to go far when they don't wait on you at the The Solvang. read more

What a disappointment the Kringle was. I ordered 9 to be sent to family for Christmas breakfast. The bakery in Solvang that I usually use could not deliver early enough, so I went by "the best bakery in Solvang" review. It cost more than the other bakery, the shipping charges were astronomical, and the Kringle was not even close to the other bakery's quality. The filling and amount of almonds on top were VERY sparse. The pastry was excellent, but oh so blah. Might as well have ordered croissants. Too bad that Paolo D's review did not come in earlier. What a comprehensive list. I had an almond croissant at Starbucks the other day and it has excellent filling and loads of almonds on top, exactly what I like. Now I can go to any Starbucks and get my fill with no shipping charges. read more

Okay this bakery has the BEST creampuffs !!! The customer service is great and very helpful and informative. Love that they have samples out . I had a taste of the jalepeno, onion & cheese bread YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM is all i can say ! I love that they are the only bakery that stays open late, because honestly this town is a ghost town after 5pm since all the stores close at that time :) Look forward to seeing you all again soon ! read more

This is a very quaint bakery close to downtown and other shops. This area is grwat for walks and sight-seeing. Inside, the bakery isn't huge but a nice size for browsing. They have lots of breads, danish, rolls, cakes and cupcakes. They have an onion cheese bread to die for! It gets even better if you warm it up, top with cream cheese and add some habanero jelly from Shoestring! read more

Yowza, the almond Danish is delicious! I've never been attracted to normal Danishes, but this one makes its namesake proud! Crispy yet fluffy, with plenty of almond filling. This was the best bakery we tried in Solvang. read more

Attention to detail and taste! I ordered custom shortbread butter cookies for my son's graduation and they are awesome! I really appreciate the clarity of the edible photo (school's logo), and their attention to details so that they match my son's school colors. Each is individually wrapped with the school's colors. I visited the bakery on Monday and was appalled at the way one employee (Susana, I later learned was her name) treated a younger employee. She yelled and embarrassed her in front of customers. This is unacceptable at any business. Although the bakery itself is amazing, I recommend management does some serious soft skills training for their employees. Susana seems like a bully! I'm only rating it three stars for the pastries and the young girl's wonderful customer service even under the circumstances and visible tears in hers eyes. read more
