I am a sucker for anything tea related, so of course the Spice and Tea Exchange's arrival in the neighborhood was a cause for celebration! This unique little shop located in the heart of downtown Newport is any foodie/tea geek's paradise, and you can easily spend a good hour browsing through the wide array of epicurean merchandise they sell here! Take your time exploring the various teas, infused sugars, and exotic spices, all conveniently placed next to sample jars for sniffing to your heart's content. I have been known to just come in here and hang out with the raspberry sanding sugar - it just smells so wonderful! They also carry tons of accessories for teatime, including infusers, spoons, and mugs. I love the creative and dishwasher friendly rubber infusers that are made in quirky shapes, like the mana"tea" that looks exactly like how it sounds. So fun! The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable, and also generous with free samples of their fantastic and tasty dip mixes and hot or iced teas. I was in the shop a few days ago and reviewing their teas. I was talking with my friend and a woman who worked their who looked like the manager overheard our conversation and decided to chime in. I asked how much the jar would be and she said that she would have to take out all the loose leaf tea and then weigh it. It seemed like a total inconvenience to her from someone looking to buy some. It said made in China which I wanted to know if the Earl Gray was from Britain or China. She was waiting on a customer and stopped where she was so she could get a book and let me know from the other clerk where I could have waited. I walked out of there with nothing but was more of a inconvenience to the manager as a customer. I would suggest another place. read more

I REALLY enjoy this store. Then why just 4 stars? Because you can find certain spices for less else where. I truly enjoy the experience of coming in, smelling the spice concoctions, seeing the worldly salts and peppers. Buy 6 bags, get the 7th free. A nice shop to peruse while a tourist in Newport... the variety is great, but the prices are not. Beyond tourist high pricing, IMHO.

I hesitate to review since I didn't try any of their tea, but I wanted to throw a few things out there. They have a decent selection to choose from but their prices are up there. I don't mind spending money on good tea, but their prices are a too high for me to take a chance on it not being good tea. If you're a tea enthusiast looking to try something new, and don't mind shelling out some extra cash, then this might be the place for you. So I visited their Mashpee location in Massachusetts and the girls in there were exceptionally nice and explained the whole wall of tea options to me. I got a wonderful White tropical iced tea. I only wish I had ordered a bigger cup. The shop was ridiculously clean and had great airflow, masks, and plastic windows between you and the register/order areas. There are a lot of things that I love about The Spice & Tea Exchange and 0 things that I dislike. So, I'll keep it simple and list why this place is awesome. 1.) Super friendly workers that are willing to help you find what you're looking for or to give you information when needed. I love that whenever I'm in there, they are helpful but not overbearingly so. They give you space. Which I love! 2.) There are SO many options and the store itself organized in a way that makes it easy to find anything you're looking for. However, you may go in without a particular agenda and that's actually more fun. It's relaxing to stroll in and smell all the spices/tea. There are large jars that customers can pick up, open, and smell. I love that because you really get a sense of what you're buying. 3.) All spices come with little notes on how to use them. So helpful! I've made dishes based around spices I've bought here. My favorite thing to do is find ways to incorporate new spices into things I eat every day. If you want to up your cooking/baking game, come here. It's certainly helped me. 4.) You can buy in small or large quantities. Only need a tiny bit of chocolate sea salt? Buy a smaller pack! Know you're going to use a ton of Himalayan sea sat like me??? Then buy the larger quantity! 5.) Relaxing, calming, inviting. read more

The store is deceiving.... lots of options, things smell really great... but actually make a purchase and try their spices, teas, and products, and you'll be disappointed.... I've been in twice, purchased teas and a steeper the first visit, and then purchased teas and spices on the second. I bought five teas, and am unimpressed with all off them :( They're all either too light, or too bitter. So, for the cost, I'm very disappointed. I've only ever handwashed the steeper, and it's so cheaply made it's falling apart after 1 year (and probably 10 uses). :( :( Additionally, the spices are caked, so when you use them in food and then take a bite, you get "patches" of spice, which is awful. On our most recent visit, the girl working talked A LOT, and couldn't be understood.... I listened as each other customer walked in and she asked the same question... to which EVERYONE had to ask her to repeat herself. She was loud enough to be heard, but her tone and speed made her sound like one long, odd noise. Instead of asking "Have you been here before?" Try, "Welcome. What brings you in?" I also did NOT appreciate the push to get a "free" bag having brought 6 to the counter... I knew my total would be less if I'd not purchased Maca ($1.99) since it's the least expensive bag that becomes free; I should've either declined the "free" offer or put the Maca back and purchased it separately, but I was on vacation and didn't feel like playing games. Between the experiences, and poor quality of the teas, products, and caked spices, I won't be returning. I'm very happy I didn't buy any gifts here. read more

Whenever you walk into a shop that specializes in something, whether that something is olive oil, soap, candles, or hot sauce, you should expect that it will be a bit boujee (fancy, expensive, etc.). While the shop itself is pretty small (there's not much walking room), the options that they have are truly endless. There is an entire wall dedicated to flavored salts and an equally large wall filled with seasonings that you can directly put on items to make a meal amazingly unique. Plus, their knick knacks like colorful mugs and tea infusers are absolutely adorable. My dad purchased the Harissa seasoning last year and he couldn't get enough of it, so I got him three more packets for around $5 each. They also have a large selection of cute little postcard-esque cards that have simple recipes on them. A recipe card + a seasoning packet = a perfect little gift idea. While this place may seem like a tourist shop, my guess is that most tourists come in solely to browse and walk around inside of a place that is clean and smells nice. I truly believe that most of The Spice & Tea Exchange customers are regulars who keep coming back for more, whether that be in the form of the unique salts, delicious spice combinations, or crazy and weird teas, the only way to find out is to give them a visit! read more

I walked up to this 2nd floor shop to smell the spices and was taken aback by how cute this shop is! From gourmet teas to sugars and spices, this store offers the perfect creative gift for that culinary person and/or coffee lover in your life! I picked up some fresh Lemon Sugar for my iced tea and their Peppermint Patty Sugar to rim martini glasses for holiday cocktails. Their specialty rubs and spices make great stocking stuffers! The best part about this store is you can pick up a jar and SMELL the actual product before you buy it. Not sure what Arrowroot Powder is? My husband and I both like to cook so this was a great place for us! This is a completely specialized shop on custom spices and teas, just like the name states. As you enter the small shop, you are treated to shelves of spices on the left and right. To the left you just have an entire shelf area to various salts from pink to black with random spicy salts mixed in. It's a nice place where you can actually by a pre-made jar or buy by the ounce. They have other spices along the right hand wall, that meet all types of culinary cooking from Latino spices to things you predominately associate with Asian cuisine. Being half Japanese and my wife being of El Salvadoran decent, we loved having the selection of spices that we typically find hard to find. They even had saffron, sold by the gram, kept in the back, which is a nice bonus. The staff here was very helpful, and showing us to any spice we couldn't find ourselves. Worth a stop if you live in the area and can't find that certain spice for your cooking. read more

As an avid home cook/baker, I find myself needing to come here frequently as its one of the few places in town to get less common spices. I love their new location on Thames street level opposed to their old one up a flight of stairs. The staff is always great... they make sure you are comfortable and encourage you to open up spice jars and smell away. I also love that they have a customer rewards program which I take full advantage of. The smoked paprika here is one of my favorites. As well as all the different spice mixes you can pick to make a dip (onion onion, mmm). They usually have a few samples set up around the store. I also love their sugar mixes (can we say salted bourbon turbinado sugar? yes please!), pepper offerings, and I have even picked up cat nip for my cat. Plenty of gift options here - they even have some gift boxes all set up with different spices. The location is right downtown on Thames street so parking is scarce. You could park in the brick market lots if you wanted to be close by. Otherwise its a perfect stop on a stroll down Thames street. Though you could probably find any of these spices/teas online for cheaper, the service and quality is so great I choose to come here instead. read more

What an amazing place. Came across this store randomly while exploring Thames Street and was amazed with all their wonderful products - Spices, blends of spices, meat rubs, sugars and teas. There are literally hundreds of jars lining the walls and you are welcome to open each and every one to sample all of their amazing aromas. Pre-packaged portions of each product are hung directly above the jar to make it super easy for you to gather what you like. The coconut thai spice blend smelled amazing. So did ALL of the teas. I could have spent a fortune - Luckily it was around closing time when I walked in so I felt rushed in my browsing and only picked out seven flavors of tea. I will be back. read more

You will be overwhelmed and amazed. We walked in looking for some tea, but ended up wanting to buy everything! The only reason we didn't buy everything is because we couldn't afford it. There are a ton of spices and salts and teas. The salts and seasonings and rubs all looked and smelled delicious. They had concoctions I never would have imagined. This place is so cool. It's a nasal adventure as you can smell all of the teas and spices out on the shelves. I probably smelled at least half the stuff they had there. After working the olfaction I decided to give my taste buds a turn and bought 3 small bags of various teas. Mango green tea was mango-tastic. Mystic Dragon, a blend of Chinese and Japanese green teas, had a pretty bold flavor. I have not tried the chamomile that i bought yet. The staff are super helpful and friendly and will not judge you for wanting to smell everything, they even encourage it. Only thing is the prices are a little high, but the teas make for good gifts and novelties. read more

As the name suggests, its a bunch of tea and spices for sale. But you can smell and sample to your hearts content. I love stores like this that allow you to sample and mingle with the merchandise before making your choice. I must have smelled about 15 types of tea from the containers on the wall before deciding on a fruity black blend. Not gonna lie, it seems pretty steep to pay $5 for a small pouch, but theres nothing wrong with a little indulgence once in a while. The pepper and other spices smelt great too and I may be back for it if I ever need it. Take a detour when visiting newport to enliven your senses. read more

My lanta, we loved this store!! We stopped at the Newport visiting area before we embarked on an adventure and while I walked away briefly, my boyfriend looked at all the flyers they had out. I came back and he mentioned wanting to go to the spice exchange. While out and about walking, we stumbled upon it and went inside. This place is ADORABLE. It's perfectly set up with the spices, teas, salts, etc lining the walls. The 2 people working made it clear we were able to touch everything and open the jars and smell whatever we wanted! He starts off by letting us smell this AMAZING tea (I forgot the name but my boyfriend bought it) that smelled like mixed berries. They also had dip out that I sampled and ended up buying (chicken blend dip). I also bought their black chocolate tea which I am excited to try. They are a little pricy for what you get, but I was happy to know they have an online shopping website so I am able to get more if need be. I always love trying new things like this and am glad we found this little nook! I would recommend going there, and the staff was VERY friendly and helped with all my questions. read more

Love this place. I'm not a tea drinker, but I love cooking. And let me tell you, any spice you could possibly want is here. They over lots of spice blends for cooking, and others to make dipping oils or to mix into sour cream/yogurt for an easy and unique party dip. Some of their more popular spices are prepackaged while others are stored in jars and are measured out for you by weight if you'd like to purchase it. This is awesome if your trying a recipe with a spice you've never worked with before and don't want to buy a large amount. I went in a bought 1oz of ground sumac which was about 3TBSP. The woman was more the willing to measure it out for me so I had an idea and was fine with doing 1 1/2oz or whatever I needed. They usually have samples of tea out, offer gift packages and encourage you to explore and smell any spices/teas you wish.
