ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!Worst restaurant I've ever been to! I wish I would have seen the reviews before going with my family for lunch here. You will be paying for the view basically. The service, decor and food were all atrocious. We ordered an "Artesian Cheese Platter" for an appetizer. The description on the menu is NOT what we got. The food reminds me of food you get on an airplane. The Soup De Jour was a butternut squash crab bisque. Sounds good right? It tasted like fishy baby food. The bread basket was full of stale hard bread. The butter tasted old. The place smelled musty and they haven't updated anything since probably 1978. That would be cool and retro if it wasn't also unkempt and shabby. Chairs with stains and ratty upholstery, horrible lighting that somehow contrasted with the gorgeous ocean view and mirrors that belong in a carnival fun house assaulted you in every direction. I gasped upon entering the bathroom because the peeling wallpaper reminded me of something out of a trailer park horror film and it was also filthy. Our waiter had a very forced and fake pleasant attitude. However another female server- Older blonde lady with shoulder length hair actually hushed me and walked away while I was in mid sentence when I was simply trying to get her to send our waiter over. This Restaurant is beyond outdated and past its prime. It needs to be closed, condemned, and torn down. The beautiful location could serve a much better purpose with service and food to match the cost. If I could give it 0 Stars I would. Also, today My daughter and I are both experiencing stomach issues. I would not doubt this place was the culprit. read more

We came here with my family to have lunch we didn't make a reservation they told us the wait was only 5 minutes so we waited and then they put us in a seperate room where the view wasn't the same and they only have 2 waiters for more than 10 tables. The food and service was absolutely perfect. I had just come back from deployment and they went above and beyond to make my first real meal back special. They set us up with an amazing view of the city, and was a great atmosphere to be in. Definitely a place I will come again... Ate here for lunch, Waiter was attentive and accommodating. Partner had the Seafood Cobb salad. It was a large portion and delicious. The service was horrible here. I will never, ever come back again! And I will never, ever recommend anybody to this horrible place. My wife was visiting me from New York City last week, and I've be planning to make her stay in bay area as pleasant and memorable as possible. I made reservation at Spinnaker for a weekend brunch at beautiful Sausalito, and expected have a nice start for a fun weekend. However, my experience there was so horrible that it almost ruined our whole day visit. I will never, ever come back again! And I will never, ever recommend anybody to this horrible place. I made reservation at 11:30AM on 2/16/2013 through Open Table. I was so excited to show my wife the beautiful view of San Francisco, and got to the restaurant at around 11:10AM. Well, everything was OK at the beginning, the whole place was quite empty at that time, and the waitress brought us to a table with nice view. We started to look into their menu, wait for someone to server us, and wait, and wait, and wait! People came after us started to order, and get their food. I was trying to be nice and kept making eye contact with waiters walking around, but they just avoid the eye contact and ignore me like air every single time! I've been waiting for more than half hour, and no one showed up to take our order! What did I do to deserve the treatment like this? I was very angry at the end and left this place. We came here for lunch after a beautiful bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge. We sat by the window and enjoyed a glass of wine and the burger and the quesadilla. Both entrees were good, nothing to write home about. The service was mediocre, our server just didn't seem to care. Last week we were in Sausalito again after a long time and since the Spinnaker had open we decided to have a Snack. I ordered fried Calamari for $ 15,50. When it came after some 20 minutes with maybe 10 to 15 people already eating in the Restaurant. I was surprised on the big size of the plate but also the unusually looking of the " Calamari," Well this junk they sell at this Restaurant sure is NO ordinary Calamari. Whats inside of the breading looks like a 1/4 to 3/8 inch slice of an inner tube of a Bicycle Tire. If it is at all " Calamari " and not Factory made it is most likely imported from Vietnam since I run into some thing like it before in Manila and was told that this Garbage is made there. What an insult to the public calling Spinnaker a Seafood Restaurant, here we have most of the Seafood in front of us and this Restaurant serves us such a junk, what a disgrace !! I wonder what else is frozen or previously prepared at this place ? The " French Fries " are also lousy ! read more

The view is really nice, for that it gets 3 stars. The seafood also tasted good, so 3 stars for that as well. The sides were pretty bland and seemed like it was cooked in a way for pleasing their very older clientele. (Veggies steamed to oblivion, rice pilaf tasted strangely of rice a roni packet seasoning) Which is fine, if that is their target customer. But there's no reason for the sides to be of less quality than the main course. I know it's a tourist trap area, so the prices were obviously going to reflect that. The decor is really hideous. The restaurant is carpeted and you can smell it. The owners make their workers wear tuxedos. Why? You can dress smart and clean without a tuxedo. There's no need for that level of discomfort between employees and guests. There's a beaten up salad trolley that gets sadly pushed to your table to offer table side salad tossing. Why? It's stupid, do it in the kitchen. The Spanish speaking busboy had way more personality than our tuxedo clad waiter who was covered in salad dressing. The tables and chairs were in pretty rough shape and those mirrors with the sad seagulls painted on them made the view so depressing. Please, just nuke the inside and start fresh and modern. I'd gladly pay 10 dollars more for a plate for the same food if the place didn't feel and smell dated. read more

I've only been here for events at the bar. I don't even eat seafood so I couldn't tell you about the food. The ambience is great though.; Outstanding views from the restaurant and the surrounding cove which makes for a great date to take a walk. It is pricey and you will pay for parking but if you like fancy seafood places, this seems to be ideal. read more

From the second we pulled up this place stole my heart. It's right on the water and it is floor to ceiling windows with a perfect view of the Golden Gate bride! My bf and I came for dinner and the bridge was all lit up. We had the oysters to start which were probably the best oysters we've ever had! I had the Halibut special of the night and my bf had the angle hair seafood pasta and I can't tell you which sauce was better, they were both so amazing we finished everything! We had the bread pudding and vanilla gelato for dessert and couldn't leave any happier. Beautiful restaurant, very relaxed music and breathtaking view! Definitely recommend for date night! read more

Just visiting Sausalito and this restaurant was recommended by my brother. We went for lunch and the atmosphere is wonderful with boats passing by and the city of San Francisco is on the horizon. I was the luncheon speaker last week for a Marin charitable organization. Having lived in Marin for over 3 decades, I had always wondered what the restaurant would be like inside. It definitely exceeded my expectations. The building is on a jetty, surrounded on 3 sides by water. It was mesmerising, in the drifty way of a water view. After I gave the talk, I joined the group for lunch. Each of us was served a caesar salad with delicious dressing and croutons, shrimp, and scallops. It was delightful. The lettuce was perfectly fresh and crisp, and the whole effect was just right. We had decadent cookies for dessert, with delicious de-caf coffee. I feel that the price point is merited by the view, and will bring out of town guests there. Now it is May 2010 and I finally went to the restaurant for dinner. We had a table by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the SF skyline at twilight. We could see the Bay Bridge, GG Bridge, Angel Island, Strawberry spit, Alcatraz, large ships going out the gate and many sail boats, and then a colorful rowing team glided by. I had the crab Louis with the caesar dressing. It was perfect, and I am very picky about this dish. To be able to sit there and experience twilight enveloping the bay was spectacular. The sky and water colors deepened and shimmered and it was worth every penny even if we had only had dessert. I highly recommend this place. I might add that the building is fabulous mid-century modern. read more

Where to start. The service has gone downhill here. I'm not a very demanding person, but one of the very few demands I do have is respect. We were here last Saturday (3/8/14) around 4pm for a quick bite and a quick couple of drinks before jumping on the last 6:30pm ferry to the city. My boyfriend and I had his family visiting from AUS and so I remembered The Spinnaker as a wonderful place that served delicious daiquiris, had great views and I thought would be the perfect place to take them. Anyway, we decided to do the whole tourist/bike ride adventure from the city and into Sausalito. Needless to say, we were not dressed up and I'm assuming that our service was completely based upon our appearance. My boyfriend manages a bar, his sister works in the service industry in AUS and I used to be a server back in the day. My point is that we all know and understand the typical stereotypes that people in the industry have of certain customers and also understand when a server or bartender is slammed and the restaurant is understaffed. That said, The Spinnaker was OVER-staffed and yet we received the WORST service ever. We sat in the bar area where it wasn't busy and thought it would be the quickest! Boy were we wrong. I mean, we weren't in a SUPER hurry (we had 2.5 hours before our ferry was going to leave), but we didn't expect zero service. There was one lady running around yapping at tables all around us and acting like she was the owner of the place. Finally after 10 minutes she greeted us and set down menus. 20 minutes went by and we still hadn't been spoken to again. So now 30 min into sitting and waiting, I finally get up and see a bunch of people standing at the bar area talking. I ask the bartender if we could just order with him and he said he'd send our server over. The server finally rocked up about 5 minutes later with major attitude. She's the blonde with the kinda droopy eyes/eye make-up. I would tell you her name but she never told it to us. She had zero interest in us being there. Server: "hi, you want to order?" Me: "great; yes, please!" Server: "uh-huh" Me: "OK, we're going to share a bunch of stuff. We want the crab/shrimp sandwich," Server: "yup" Me: "um, the baked brie" Server: "yup" Me: "bruschetta" Server: "yup" And so on.... I think you get the drift. Everything we ordered was followed by an "uh-huh" or "yup." She seemed super annoyed and angry that she was waiting on us. We must've said thank you a million times which was all followed by "uh-huh" and "yup." SUPER RUDE. Anyway, we left her a 17% tip because we're stupid and still over-tip even when we're treated like shit. Not once did we get a thank you, a welcome, a how are you? NOTHING! Furthermore, once our food came, she never came back. I again had to go to the bartender to ask if we could receive our check. On our way out, we happened to cross paths with her and she said "thanks for coming in." I was like WTF? Now we get something more than a "uh-huh" and "yup"?? ridiculous. I will not bring anyone else back to this place if this is how we'll be treated. read more

My girlfriend decided to make us a reservation at this place for our anniversary. Seeing as I'm not from the bay area, she figured it would be cool to eat dinner over the water facing amazing views of the city. In theory, this would have been amazing...in actuality...this place was a TREMENDOUS LET-DOWN. We're both in our early 20's, so needless to say when we walked in, we were instantly out of place. The minute you walk in you feel like you just stepped out of time machine and went back in time 40 years (imagine a place Archie Bunker would have enjoyed a fine dinner at). Overall, creepy and completely outdated. After we walked in, we attempted to check in for our 7:30 reservation (it was 7:28), but there was no one there. After waiting for about 10 minutes, someone that appeared to be a manager walked up and asked if we had a reservation, at which point we were told that a couple of tables would be opening up by the window in about 15 min (it was 7:40 at this point). While we were waiting in the bar area, an older group of people (3 people that were about 60 years old) walked in. They were instantly asked by manager if they had been helped yet, or had a reservation...they answered -NO- to both, and were INSTANTLY sat down next to a window. At this point, it was 7:55...our reservation was for 7:30...these people had no reservation, or apparent wait time. I decided to get up and talk to the manager. I asked how much longer, and was told he was still waiting for some tables to open up.... At that point, we decided we had enough, and left, but not before making sure the manager fully and clearly understood why we were leaving. Moral of the story: Unless you're 50+ don't go here. They seem to be fixated on age being an accurate representation of how much you're going to spend. read more

My Mom and I went to Sausalito for a stroll. We chanced upon this place and decided to have lunch there. I did enjoy my food (Seabass Saute) and my Mom hers. The view was, as expected, extraordinary. We were actually grateful we chose The Spinnaker if only for the view. However, my experience in this restaurant turned sour when (after leaving the premises my Mom realized she left her wide-brimmed hat) I returned to retrieve my Mom's hat. It wasn't on the chair where my Mom left it so I spoke to a server (unfortunately, I did not get his name) and told him about my predicament. Expecting to be assisted "nicely," he instead told me that he cannot recall my Mom wearing a hat when she came inside the restaurant. What?!?! Like I was making this up? Despite my obvious surprise to this different brand of customer service, I calmly said that she did and described how it looked. After a few paces toward where we were seated while dining there, he pointed out a hat that was on the opposite side. I immediately recognized it as my Mom's and told him that it was what I was looking for. He did apologize soon after. I would have shrugged this off and went my merry way as I would normally do with negative experiences. After all, the server apologized. However, after leaving the restaurant the second time, I felt wronged, and the assumption/insinuation that I did not know what I was talking about OR that I was making up a story is demeaning and thus, unacceptable. It would have been a gratifying time spent in this restaurant and I would have recommended the place to family and friends, but being subjected to such poor customer service changed all that. read more

Last week we had the opportunity to visit many places in and around San Francisco. I found my food Dulcinea at the tip of Sausalito, at a restaurant named, "The Spinnaker!" I ordered the FRESH, and it was, CATCH, which was Coho Salmon. Gary, our server, and a delightful host, recommended it. My CATCH arrived literally steaming hot and not tepid, as has happened at other restaurant. It was cooked to perfection atop a huge serving of risotto. It was beyond great, it was fabulous. The Spinnaker has a fantastic 270 degree view of the bay. It's as much a feast for your eyes, as the delicious food. We were fortunate to see a whale, which prompted Gary, our server extraordinaire, to spontaneously bring a video on his phone to share of another that had a similar experience. Speaking of Gary, I would like to give to you my highest recommendation to ask for him as your server. This man is so endearing, very accommodating, knowledgeable, loves people and has a deep commitment to ensure that you have the very best experience possible. If you want the best, ask for Gary! I agree with the few posters Ive read who say this place used to be better - and I think the public is beginning to notice. I usually regard it as a solid 3-star just for value and the view. I come here 1-2 times per year usually when friends/family/colleagues visit the bay area. I dodged a bullet recently when my boss was visiting from Singapore. Wanted to bring him here but he did not want to go to the trouble of crossing the bridge with so many good options in the city. - Good Thing. That's why he's the boss folks! But I did wound up here for New Year's Day Dinner with my family. Everything was quite mediocre with nothing outstanding. My wife had the scallops and veggies. I had the mushroom chicken w veggies. The taste very lacking on both counts. The chicken was actually a bit dry and tough in spots. I actually had to reach for the salt shaker. We can and do do better at home. Disappointing. Usually we like to order 2 very different dishes so we can share. Thought we achieved that but in this case both dishes came with the same vegetable "option" with was green beans, shredded carrots and something else. Again, not bad. Just not outstanding and not very tasty. My wife is Thai and Im from Louisiana so maybe its just that we're accustomed to more lively food. Or maybe our taste buds were worn down from all the holiday dinning. Why do i say the public is beginning to notice? After trying to get reservations at 2 other spots, I phoned on New year's Eve for New Year's night reservations at 7. No problem. I changed my mind and pushed back til 830 thinking we would take in a movie or something before dinner. No problem. Come time for dinner we were running early - no movie. Called from the car at 630 asking if we can come early at 730. Again no problem. While I appreciated the flexibility, Im thinking its a little too easy to make all these changes. Sure enough, we arrived at 7 and were seated before 730 at a window table no problem. This is on New Year's Day and on a Friday night. The place was less than 1/2 full. By 830 we were winding down our dinner looking at the dessert menu. By this time we were only 1 of 3 tables remaining. My daughter actually asked me why is there no one here (she's six). The deserted feeling put us totally out of the mood for dessert. (no pun intended) So we politely declined. One last thing. My forgiving sprit would still give them 3 stars if not the bill was almost $100/pp for scallops and chicken. (My daughter had a $7 penne pasta from the kids menu) And the service was spotty at best. Had to ask for silverware and the wine menu more than once. Try this place for yourself. Ill probably give it one more try in the spring or summer before giving up on one of my favorite spots. Went in there today with friends after a late morning wedding. Just went in for a round of drinks & the view. Ordered a bottle of champagne & a couple of drinks. I ordered a vodka soda in a bucket with a lime. First it took so long to get the drinks, I thought I had wandered into an AA meeting by mistake. After 20 minutes out drinks came with mine in a beer pint. I reminded the server of the bucket request. She took it back & the bartender glared & poured existing drink into bucket & threw out the rest. OMG! I wonder how they have 3 stars. read more

This is a hard review to write, because the Spinnaker has been our family's go-to "special event" restaurant. The view and location are amazing and we've had some very wonderful meals with great service there. But not this past Saturday night. We had a 7:30 reservation, arrived at 7:20, but weren't seated until 7:55. There were fireworks on the Bay which likely contributed to folks not turning over tables. I don't mind waiting a few minutes, but when I have a reservation I appreciate it being honored. We enjoyed the view with a drink in the lounge and stayed positive, as we were celebrating a birthday. Things went downhill once we were seated. Our waiter (Marc G) arrived and asked if we wanted a drink. We requested the wine list, since we had already had our cocktails while waiting for our table. It took him 10 minutes to return with the wine list! At that point, we placed our order, as we did not want to risk losing him again. He took the order, didn't write anything down, yet came back to the table two different times to double check it. I understand waiters take pride in not having to write an order down, but if you can't remember two appetizers and four entrée choices, then write it down! The pacing and time it took for our meal was horrendous. Three of us were sharing crab cakes and the fourth ordered a salad. He brought the crab cakes (unremarkable, over loaded with green onions and that was the predominant flavor). Fifteen minutes later, he brought the salad to our companion. Three of us sat there for 10 minutes watching her eat her salad. He should've brought the items at the same time, or at a minimum, ask us if we wanted them staggered. Which he didn't. Finally, at 8:50 pm, our entrees arrived. I was hoping my 90 year old mother would stay awake long enough to eat her Sole Meuniere, which came with a warning (as he placed it in front of her) about the bones that were left in the fish and "be careful as it is common with Rex Sole." That info would've been appreciated at the time of ordering and she likely would've opted for the Petrale if she knew she'd be picking bones out of her dinner. Typically, the atmosphere is lovely and classy at the Spinnaker. On this evening, there was a very large party dining in the main room and they apparently thought they were in a private room. They were loud and disruptive beyond any modicum of politeness. They sang Jingle Bells (it was Jan. 30), screeched for photos, took flash photo after flash photo and were so loud we could barely hold a conversation. The waiter apologized, saying to us "I wish I could ask them to be quieter." I think a manager could have and should have let them know their noise level was high and affecting the enjoyment of other diners. I did make it a point to tell our waiter, when asked, that we were displeased with the experience, that his service was lacking and the overall wait for service and food based on a 7:30 reservation was very disappointing. At other times when this happens, a restaurant may offer a dessert or an after dinner drink, so your experience can end on an "up" note. Not the case...and truthfully, at that point, all we wanted to do was get out of there and away from the loud, rude people celebrating "pop pop's" birthday! read more

No less then 4 employees walked past us at the check-in counter and said nothing as we waited 10 min for someone to seatus. The restaurant was pretty much empty mind you. After I flagged down a waiter I was told to be patient! Waitress was also very short with us... Sad to see so many people who must hate their jobs that much! read more

February 19th we came here with a party of 15 people to celebrate a birthday. Not only was the food horrible, but the service was even worse. If you can't accommodate or are not willing to accommodate a party of 15 with a reservation at 9pm - DON'T ACCEPT THE RESERVATION. With the reputation The Spinnaker has, I was thoroughly Disappointed all around. The food was bland and rushly prepared to hurry us out of the restaurant. It was basically slapped together. This was my first experience at the Spinnaker and needless to say I will never be back. We should have gone to Solito's (my go to pace), but Spinnaker was the birthday girls choice and wanted to try something new. Never again... read more

Found ourselves in Sausalito at a random hour and decided to pass the time by eating (what else is new?) AMBIANCE: The scenery can't be beat. Gorgeous, unobstructed views of of the SF city skyline. We caught the hours right before sunset and stayed through dusk. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. SERVICE: HORRENDOUS. Seriously. The guy was so stuck up and couldn't give us the time of day. What, is it because we're a group of Asians? Did you think we couldn't speak English? The waiter serving the table next to ours was lovely-- super friendly to his tables; we overheard lots of bantering and laughs. We were treated like the ugly redheaded stepchild-- often forgotten, or even worse, ignored. When our waiter did manage to drop by our table, he had the WORST attitude and made us feel like we were wasting his time. UGH. Way to ruin the entire dining experience! FOOD: difficult to enjoy when we were being treated so poorly by the staff. - clam chowder, bowl: Pretty good. Not a very thick/creamy chowder, but very flavorful and chock full of clams (tasted fresh). - bouillabaisse: I don't get the hype. The seafood was SO fishy, which was completely disappointing. Flavor improved greatly when eating with the accompanying parmesan garlic bread, but not enough to overcome the unappetizing seafood. - crab & shrimp sandwich: my fave of the bunch. On the bland side, but at least everything tasted fresh and fairly healthy. The fries are the thin crispy kind, which I usually enjoy, except these ones were cold :( - Dungeness crab louis: large lump crab generously sprinkled throughout the salad, this was the number 2 dish of the meal. I didn't care for the dressing. - calamari "ring toss" pasta: gross and basically inedible. Extremely rich and creamy pasta sauce paired with soggy battered calamari. Only dish that had leftovers (practically the entire dish). - tiramisu: decent rendition of an Italian resto classic. The espresso soaked cake was very fragrant. - berry trifle: PASS. The cake was so dry and the custard on top wasn't creamy enough to compensate. OVERALL: The food was fine, and normally the mediocre dishes are made up for by the stunning views. However, I really just could not see past the terrible TERRIBLE service, and ended up having a less than satisfying meal. I'd be willing to return, but would be happier with a different server, and maybe more likely for lunch than dinner. read more

I have to absolutely agree with Kate W. below. We went there because we knew the view would be great, which it was. However, the food, and service was one of the worst in my life. If you want to be told you are wrong about the food tasting weird and undercooked, then come here. If you want to be told everyone loves the food, so there must be something wrong with you, then come here. It is definitely a place people have been going to for decades, and they have now been immune to the food, so any new comers beware because the restaurant refuses to take any feedback. Rates as one of the worst restaurants I have been to with a spectacular view! This is not atypical of restaurants with a view. The food less than mediocre....salmon which they obviously don't know how to cook but of course it was frozen. The broccolini was mush and the rice I would bet was "rice a roni". If you want the view, walk out by the Spinnaker and look but do not waste your money or time on unworthy food. I do want to say we had a wonderful waiter and I actually felt sorry that he had to serve such substandard food. As for decor....enough said! read more

This place is stuffy and dated. The décor hasn't changed in at least 30 years. The waiters and waitresses are still wearing vests and bow ties like its the 1980's. They bring out your food by pushing this geriatric cart around. The clientele is definitely the class of '45 and over - there's designated parking for your walker. The chairs in the main dining room are old dusty rose banquet chairs used for the filming of The Wedding Singer. The chairs and tables in the lounge are on their last legs - bar stools with stuffing exposed, tears in the fabric and peeling veneer on the tables. The food is equally as dated. Extensive menu offering the old seafood/steak standards but with ZERO modern updates to the flavor. I had the steak and shrimp. It was $50 and the steak was bland with no seasoning and a boring dollup of blue cheese butter on top which did not add to the flavor. The shrimp were flavorless and the texture made me think they were old. The best thing on my dish was the mashed potatoes. The drinks are super outdated, no modern or hip cocktails here. I am only giving this place 2 stars because the view is spectacular and the service (despite being dated) was very attentive and everything was timely - otherwise I would give zero. The food was way too overpriced. We will not be back. For the same price we could have had an out of this world meal at Piatti or Buckeye. read more

Nice, amazing, beautiful, breathtaking view of san francisco, bay bridge, golden gate bridge, angel island.. but food. . . i swear clam chowder is one of the can food...it was super watery but super salt at the same time.. i had penne pasta with chicken..i didnt eat atfter two bites of it. crab cake was too crunchy not too good and prawn pasta wasnt too bad but wasnt good either. Four cheese ravioli was the best of the meal and it was pretty okay. Service was nice i didnt wait much for anything except waiter got busier towards the end of the night. The waiter for table near me was nice but didnt look healthy (?) enough to serve.. he was shaking all the wines and drinks while serving on the cart. Only one side of the restaurant has really great view of everything but other part is nice too... it was good for one time experience for the view..and maybe sometime far later for the view again but food...NAH. read more
