The chocolate ancho flavored gelato is my favorite, but I must confess I haven't had a flavor I didn't like! I also really appreciate the late closing time. I especially love gelato after 10 pm. I smelled the sugar wafting out the door as I walked by a did a double-take. I hadn't realized this was a gelato place rather than just a cafe. Went in an immediately tried the most unconventional flavor on the menu - the sticky rice. It was good, but not strong enough to warrant a whole scoop. Same goes for the almond fig. I ended up getting a small size (2 scoops) of pistachio and tiramisu. The pistachio was good but somehow not as nutty as I would have liked it to be. I really enjoyed the tiramisu. The portion size was good and reasonably priced at $4. I also happened to come on waffle Wednesday, when waffle cones are free! It was 85 degrees outside so by the time I got to eating most of the cone, it had been soaked through with delicious melted gelato...that was ]good. read more

Tried this yesterday for the first time and really enjoyed the gelato. And my waffle bowl was crisp and flavorful. My nephew loved the hot brownie. My brother in law liked his specialty flavor but I'm a firm believer that you can't tell how good an ice cream really is unless you taste the vanilla. This was good quality! read more

The Split Banana has fabulous flavors - ones you wish you thought of yourself - but flavors that, honestly, taste way better than I could ever make myself. Stopped in during a random trip to Staunton with my mil. I was due to have a baby in four days so I ordered the cocoa ancho flavor in a waffle cone hoping some spice would finally kick my body into labor. It was amazing! We struck up a conversation with one of the employees and joked about the labor induction qualities of spices. I told him if it worked i would increase his business by telling all pregnant women to go there. Before we left he gave me an awesome onesie with the Split Banana logo on it! I can't wait to return with my little guy wearing it! However I remained pregnant another 10 days so it didn't "work". But it was way better than trying castor oil! read more

When we lived in Lexington we would drive to Staunton some nights to get Gelato (30 min. one way). The Split Banana's gelato is THAT good! I found this gem through a Yelp search while planning for a day trip to Staunton. What a charming place! Retro tables and chairs, well-loved piano in the front window begging to be played, and very friendly staff. The prices are very reasonable for the high-quality gelato they serve. I had the pistachio gelato and I am still day dreaming about it :) Thick, creamy texture with delicious pistachios packed in. The perfect sweet and salty combo. Really good gelato! We sampled the pineapple basil- it was great! Settled on a banana split with chocolate, pistachio, and sticky rice gelato. Totally delicious, and delivered to our table with a smile. Kids had cherry cheesecake gelato and that too was yummy. I noticed they had a Keurig by the counter- if I had wanted a cup of coffee I definitely would NOT have ordered a cup here. I wouldn't expect a little shop to have an expensive espresso machine, but an air pot of locally roasted coffee would be more fitting. Gelato is made from trickling springs non-homogenized milk, and many other ingredients are local. Will definitely return! read more

First time I've had Gelato and it was damn good. Was walking downtown Staunton looking for something cold and came across this little gem of a place. They serve both Gelato and Sorbet. After sampling a taste I ordered a 3 scoop (Medium) Gelato with three flavors. Little on the small size with the scoops but it was still good. I sat at the counter and watched a young lady taking a flavor of Gelato out of the machine. She said it was Sticky Rice. I said it didn't sound very good but she proved me wrong by giving me a sample without me asking. It appears they make everything homemade here.
