We enjoyed a lovely dinner date here on Sunday night. This is definitely the classiest bar in Monrovia with some really interesting drinks. I think I will have to try a few more before I can give a fair review of the drinks. I tried "Rum to the Hills," which was interesting but it wasn't my favorite, a bit too strong after a while. My husband had a lager that he liked. The food we tried was all excellent though. We had the State salad, the braised short rib and the creme brule for dessert. Our server was very attentive but this was a dinner that took a bit more time, partially because we took some time to decide what to order. I was so excited to see that The State was opening in downtown Monrovia super close to home! I was looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday with my family and finding The State having their soft opening was so perfect! We came to the state during their soft opening week to celebrate my birthday in October. We didn't make a reservation in advance and figured we would just walk in. The host was so kind and greeted us immediately and they were able to accommodate our party of 10. We waited a few minutes as they got our table ready and were sat quickly after. Our server was very kind and checked up on us regularly. The food took a bit of time to come out, but I figured that would be the case as it was the soft opening week. Decided to try the new place in town for lunch. We went around 1 in the afternoon and the place was not busy, but there were some people there. It's smaller than I thought it would be but cozy. There's about four booths on the side wall and some tables inside a fairly large size bar, and a smaller outside patio as you come in the front door. The burger of the month was called Thanksgiving between buns which my son ordered. It was sliced turkey with dressing, and I believe cranberry sauce on a brioche bun. Came with two dipping sauces. One was a pumpkin maple flavored sauce, and also was served with sweet potato fries. He said it was delicious. I ordered the spinach and artichoke grilled cheese, which came with a side salad which you could get whatever dressing you wanted. I didn't eat the salad because I'm not a fan of mixed greens which is what the salad was. The grilled cheese filling was delicious, but the bread was super soggy and not toasted or grilled, at all. You could substitute the salad for fries or onion rings for a dollar up charge but I decided to just get a side of onion rings which cost $4 for five onion rings which I thought was a little bit pricey. But they were delicious. We also ordered the bacon wrapped dates, which were stuffed with mascarpone cheese, had a balsamic glaze and crumbled blue cheese on the platter. I was not a fan of the dates because the mascarpone was overly rich for me. Overall the food was good, our waitress was super great, very personable. DO NOT recommend. They told us we couldn't spend longer than 90 minutes dining. It was late November at night and they had the patio open so basically one entire wall was missing so it was freezing!! We finally tried the new place in town! Luckily we had a reservation since it's quite small inside. Thursdays are $6 wine nights, so we were very happy to see that on the menu. Every week night there's a different adult beverage special, all for $6 each. The food was very good. I had the Bourbon BBQ burger, which was almost a work of art. It was delicious and perfectly prepared with awesome onion rings on top. My friend had the tortilla soup and salad, which she liked. She did say the soup was a tad bit spicy, but still good. My sister ordered the wedge, which was huge! All in all, we gave the food an "A." We were impressed with our server, Edgar, and the Food & Beverage guy, Rob. They were both helpful. However, one of the food runners seemed not to be liking her job much! You do need to know this place is very loud inside! It certainly isn't the place to get romantic or intimate. Went here for the first time last night and have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the food. It was tasty, good quality and well prepared. Had the Velouté Chicken which was delicious and not overcooked. Service was good, tho I wish the waiter had told me the Bloody Mary they serve is super spicy. I had to send it back and it was removed from my bill. The place has a good vibe. The service is not what I expected. The hostess at the front desk was very rude. We tried calling 2 hours before coming and nobody answered. We decided to go in for a walk in. We were greeted with rudeness and attitude. I was there with my teen daughter and were only offered the bar. I didn't think it would be appropriate to sit at a bar with a minor so I asked for a table. She said they didn't have any available. Rather than telling us the wait time for a table, she simply looked us and said sorry in a condescending tone. It was our first time wanting to try this place and looks like our last time as we didn't like the service at the door. Horrible service. We visited on 12/1/2024. Three of us sat at a booth and the bartender was patient as we chose an appetizer and dish. The waiter that dropped off our appetizer did not offer us plates, forks, or napkins so we were left to eat our food over our hands. Then our main dishes arrived (we had empty water glasses) the server plopped off our plates and did not ask if we needed anything else. We sat for another hour with no attention to lack of water or requests for an alcoholic beverage. HORRIBLE. NEVER going back. This location was pretty disappointing. I've been to the one in Rancho and absolutely loved it so I was super excited when a new location was announced for Monrovia. Sadly, it was not held to the same standard. Let's start with the positives... the staff is friendly/welcoming, the inside is small but the seating is nicely done with dim lighting, I also love the look of all the whisky bottles against the main wall. Of all the food we ordered the only thing we really enjoyed was the cheese plate. Kudos to the person who made it. Presentation was lovely. Now for the negatives... "The State" is known to be a whisky place however, on the drink menu a whisky flight is not listed. When we asked the staff they said they do have whisky flights and you can pick 4 whiskeys from the huge list on the drink menu. Of the four whiskeys we requested for the flight they did not have one and asked us to pick another. We tried to pick one from each type of whiskey (American, Bourbon, Japanese) and when it came to the Rye we just had bad luck. We asked for Michters 10yr, Kentucky Owl, Sagamore Double Oak. Each time they came back saying they didn't have it in stock. Finally, they had the 4th rye we asked for (High West). I'm a little bothered that on the receipt they charged for the more expensive Michters that they did not have instead of the High West that we were served. I didn't notice until I was home otherwise I might have said something. Additionally, the entrees were not the best. The Bourbon BBQ burger was dry and lacked flavor. My friend said the Pesto Chicken Sandwich tasted like something you could buy at Panera :/ and the Lentil Primavera Pasta tasted like it was just tossed in a bunch of olive oil. This place has so much potential. I really hope some positive changes are made so it can be as successful as the Rancho location. read more
