Nice addition to Monrovia scene. Late to the game in the review, but it was with purpose. I wanted to see if my second visit was going to live up to my first and it did. Before the food, the staff is super attentive and have a great spirit. They take care of their guests with kindness and gratitude, which you feel in their mannerisms. As for the food, it's so good! First time I had the machaca burrito and it was mouthwatering. This time, the bbq burger, the burger being one of their staples. Made with love and amazing ingredients, this burger lived up to the expectations. Kalis, the bartender was so awesome too, taking care of me and everyone at the bar top with absolute priority. The soup was a homemade chicken soup and the salad had the most amazing dressing. I ordered a roll on the side that happened to be a sandwich baguette. The wedge salad is excellent, and at eight dollars, it is a bargain. This is on the happy hour menu, which runs from 11 AM to 5 PM. The burger is $11, and you can substitute french fries or onion rings, with an additional charge, for a side salad. They charged me one dollars for the fries, even though I asked for onion rings. I was later served the onion rings, with no additional charge. The food was quite scrumptious. On the negative side, parking is on the streets and in parking lots, which fill up quite quickly. This place just opened up in our neighborhood and we were told by others that a reservation was highly recommended. Glad we listened because this place was busy! We made a reservation via OpenTable for Friday night (tonight). We requested a booth due to having our 2 year old and they gladly accommodated us. They do indicate at the beginning of the meal it is a 90 minute turn around. It's understandable because the inside of the restaurant isn't the largest, but they make the most of the space! Let me tell you, they did a wonderful job remodeling the space- the bar is gorgeous! (The State was surprisingly very accommodating for our 2 year old. They brought her freshly cut strawberries and apples for her to munch on prior to her food coming out. ) To start We ordered the bacon wrapped dates, super bomb! Drinks: "the girl next door" for me and "rum to the hills" for him. Both great drinks, not too sweet and not too strong. 2nd round- "bee's please" for me and "el conejo de oro." For him. Main course- I got the ribeye medium rare, it came with roasted potatoes and asparagus. My husband got the tempura shrimp tacos with a side salad. My 2 year old got the butter pasta with a side of fruit. And we ordered a side or onion rings and a side of French fries. I came in for lunch at The State and unfortunately my experience was disappointing right from the start. When my party and I walked in, there was a small tattooed man and a woman standing at the front desk flipping through a notebook. We stood just two feet away from them, clearly waiting to be seated, yet neither of them looked up, greeted us, or acknowledged that we were there. After an awkwardly long pause, I finally said hello just to break the silence. The man glanced up at me with an expression as if I was bothering him, and his response was, "How may I help you?" Honestly, what else would I be there for other than to sit down and eat? When I asked for a table, he rudely asked if I had reservations. I said no, and without any effort to offer alternatives, he flatly said, "We have no tables available." No courtesy, no suggestions, no warmth. At that point, we decided to leave and took our business elsewhere. First impressions matter in the restaurant business, and the complete lack of hospitality at the door set the tone. Guests should never feel like they're intruding simply by showing up. read more

We enjoyed a lovely dinner date here on Sunday night. This is definitely the classiest bar in Monrovia with some really interesting drinks. I think I will have to try a few more before I can give a fair review of the drinks. I tried "Rum to the Hills," which was interesting but it wasn't my favorite, a bit too strong after a while. My husband had a lager that he liked. The food we tried was all excellent though. We had the State salad, the braised short rib and the creme brule for dessert. Our server was very attentive but this was a dinner that took a bit more time, partially because we took some time to decide what to order. I was so excited to see that The State was opening in downtown Monrovia super close to home! I was looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday with my family and finding The State having their soft opening was so perfect! We came to the state during their soft opening week to celebrate my birthday in October. We didn't make a reservation in advance and figured we would just walk in. The host was so kind and greeted us immediately and they were able to accommodate our party of 10. We waited a few minutes as they got our table ready and were sat quickly after. Our server was very kind and checked up on us regularly. The food took a bit of time to come out, but I figured that would be the case as it was the soft opening week. Decided to try the new place in town for lunch. We went around 1 in the afternoon and the place was not busy, but there were some people there. It's smaller than I thought it would be but cozy. There's about four booths on the side wall and some tables inside a fairly large size bar, and a smaller outside patio as you come in the front door. The burger of the month was called Thanksgiving between buns which my son ordered. It was sliced turkey with dressing, and I believe cranberry sauce on a brioche bun. Came with two dipping sauces. One was a pumpkin maple flavored sauce, and also was served with sweet potato fries. He said it was delicious. I ordered the spinach and artichoke grilled cheese, which came with a side salad which you could get whatever dressing you wanted. I didn't eat the salad because I'm not a fan of mixed greens which is what the salad was. The grilled cheese filling was delicious, but the bread was super soggy and not toasted or grilled, at all. You could substitute the salad for fries or onion rings for a dollar up charge but I decided to just get a side of onion rings which cost $4 for five onion rings which I thought was a little bit pricey. But they were delicious. We also ordered the bacon wrapped dates, which were stuffed with mascarpone cheese, had a balsamic glaze and crumbled blue cheese on the platter. I was not a fan of the dates because the mascarpone was overly rich for me. Overall the food was good, our waitress was super great, very personable. We've been here a few times; there are some things we love, and some things that are less stellar. Highlights: well-made, interesting cocktails; incredible whiskey selection; the tacos are fantastic. Lowlights: the poutine and the chicken veloute were both a letdown; the servers are wonderful to interact with but can be a bit scarce (water refills and getting the check seemed to take longer than normal - this was a trend we noticed on multiple visits, even during less busy times). We liked the ambiance - the decor is pretty and the vibe is chill, but the restaurant is relatively small; definitely recommend trying to get a reservation if you're coming on a weekend, or avoid peak hours. All told, we still like this place. A great spot for cocktails and tacos when you're not in a rush. read more

We finally tried the new place in town! Luckily we had a reservation since it's quite small inside. Thursdays are $6 wine nights, so we were very happy to see that on the menu. Every week night there's a different adult beverage special, all for $6 each. The food was very good. I had the Bourbon BBQ burger, which was almost a work of art. It was delicious and perfectly prepared with awesome onion rings on top. My friend had the tortilla soup and salad, which she liked. She did say the soup was a tad bit spicy, but still good. My sister ordered the wedge, which was huge! All in all, we gave the food an "A." We were impressed with our server, Edgar, and the Food & Beverage guy, Rob. They were both helpful. However, one of the food runners seemed not to be liking her job much! You do need to know this place is very loud inside! It certainly isn't the place to get romantic or intimate. We came here for one reason and one reason only: The vegan tzatziki burger. New menu and now the one true vegan option for burgers is gone. Good luck trying to make any of the other burgers vegan, as they contain bacons, cheeses, and aiolis. I don't know why a restaurant would do this. How hard is it to keep a vegan burger on the menu. Is it hurting profits that much that it needs to be removed from the menu? Might as well just remove the vegan pasta, as well. read more

Had the Velouté Chicken which was delicious and not overcooked. Service was good, tho I wish the waiter had told me the Bloody Mary they serve is super spicy.
