This is not just the best coffee shop (and now wine bar) in the neighborhood, but one of the best anywhere in Seattle. Lord only knows there are precious few reasons to come to Beacon Hill - we're not exactly flush with restaurant and other food/drink options. Those of us who live here have all watched the development of good food in nearby Columbia City, on First Hill and even Georgetown, and desperately wondered when if ever this resurgence will happen here. So far it hasn't... but in the meantime there's this absolute gem of a place to keep us happy. The Station is run by Luis, whose enthusiasm for his work and for the people he serves is very obvious. He and his gregarious staff are fantastic: friendly, fun and all-round delightful. One of the great things about the station is its size and consequent intimacy. As one newspaper review pointed out, it's small enough that you don't feel at all awkward chatting with other people who come in. It has a very cosy, community feel to it - so different from the sprawling space of Starbucks and their ilk. it's the kind of place where you make unexpected friends, and find out who your neighbors are. And, they love dogs!!! Ours (a large, not overly bright and very sweet mutt) heads there almost by herself in the morning, and is always greeted enthusiastically by name when she wanders in. Luis knows the names of all the neighborhood dogs that come in, and has photos of them on his website. The Station just started serving wine and beer in the evenings of some days during the week, and they a very nice patio out back. So, other neighborhoods, eat your heart out: yes, you may have a million eating establishments and entertainment options, but you don't have The Station! UPDATE, December 2011: It is no exaggeration to say that The Station has transformed the neighborhood. It has now been open for 18 months, and in that time has become the focal point of the area. Because of Luis, Leona and their staff, and their consistent commitment to community spirit, people in the neighborhood all know each other, and many friendships and connections have been made. It's the kind of place where people come to meet and chat, and the atmosphere is very personal; Luis even invites regulars to bring in their favorite mugs, and has them up on hooks behind the bar for use whenever they come in. The Station is an example of a small business that has made a huge difference in the social landscape of an area. Luis' consistent humor and good cheer, and his generosity in hosting neighborhood events and artists, has been the single biggest agent for positive change on Beacon Hill. No kidding. And we've lost count of the number of people who have stumbled on the place because of the Light Rail station next door and said, "Gee, I wish I lived here - you're so lucky to have this place." One of the best coffee shops ever. Luis is amazing. He is super friendly, but aware - he's not going to chat you up if you just want to sit quiet on your computer, but if you're in the mood he can chat with you for hours. Really I think the only thing I would complain about is the amount of space. But how can you knock it for that? It's small. If you like an intimate little spot it's wonderful. Well decorated, fun vibe, great owner, good coffee, great music, free wi-fi, lots of outlets (some coffee shops don't get this right), and they serve beer and wine now? I need to come back for that. The place has really come into its own since they first opened (I was there! It was great then too, though). Luckily there aren't any Starbucks or Tully's nearby, but even if there isn't any competition (the Victrola down the way... ugh) it's still good to support your local small business owner! The Station is a great, SMALL coffee shop. Staff was friendly and the Mocha Mexicana was great. There were quite a few people in the shop, some playing dominos. It seemed like a lot of the people who came in were regulars. It also offers free wi-fi and is very convenient, which is why I was there. I needed write a paper and get away from the noise of my house remodeling. No one made a fuss about me coveting one of the four or five tables for several hours. My only complaint is that there was a customer having a very loud conversation on the phone which is distracting in such a small space. read more

I feel so lucky that my best friend lives a block away from The Station, otherwise I may never have known about this cozy, welcoming cafe with it's addictive Mexican Hot Chocolate. I honestly often find myself going out of my way just to have a coffee here. In the warmer months, I often stop by the Beacon Hill library, grab a book, and have a coffee or pastry out on the patio with my dog while I read. I sometimes bring a textbook and write up my notes here over a Mexican hot chocolate. I've even been known to invite a friend over here for a sangria instead of going to a bar at happy hour. It can be a little noisy inside the shop what with the coffee grinder and all, so it's not my favorite place to study in the winter... but I just love this place. Every staff person, from the owner to the baristas, has been genuinely nice, upbeat, and quick to ask how my day is going. In the world of Starbucks, Peets, and Tully's, that's remarkably hard to find from a coffee shop! Even better, the other patrons seem to recognize the value of being friendly, too -- they often interrupt me to ask to pet my dog or give him a treat, or to tell me stories about their pets. They smile, they make jokes, they offer a seat closer to an outlet when they can. They sit and hang out for what seems like hours, just like I imagine the older gentlemen in Eastern Europe do. It's just a really cool vibe, and I'm so glad to have such a wonderful spot in my neighborhood. I was there with my little one (19mo) and had a great time! Yummy Americano for me and there were some grapes available for her as well as an unexpected person I know being there along with 3 great guys who were all very welcoming! The Station is the best. Best everything. You name it, the best. If only this were in my neighborhood. If you're on Beacon Hill, or for some reason find yourself going to the area, stop in. Everything good ever said about this place is true. Somewhat difficult to find... if you find yourself distracted by the Kumon sign for the learning center (and the building that houses the center) and then drive by, you've just passed The Station. Don't worry; just park and walk back. Even though it appears they have wi-fi, it doesn't really seem like a place to stay forever working on you laptop -- too small as others have said. But people come and go, some spend some time on their laptops, kids come in and it's full of energy for a bit, eggs and milk are delivered, someone comes in looking for someone... This place is amazing. The staff here make an extra effort to know almost all their customers by name...and remember them! That sense of community you will never find at Starbucks. Their House Mocha has changed my life. I will never view mochas the same again. When the staff hand grates the chocolate for your mocha for an extra silkiness, you know it's gotta be good. Yay for another great place to have my morning coffee in Beacon Hill! We stopped in to check out the Station on Sunday morning and were the only people in this new shop. The owner was behind the bar, and is an uber-friendly long-time Beacon Hiller/Hill-ite(?). I love the long benches along the wall, so I can cozy up next to my hubby while we read the NYT over a nice cup of joe. As well, I like the nice big windows and the fact that The Station is off the main drag on 16th, so you don't have to look out at traffic whizzing by--just people walking their dogs and enjoying the neighborhood. The only negatives I could find were that there were no fresh pastries available while we were there and they are currently only taking cash (no cards). They'd only been open a week though, so hopefully these features will be available soon. read more

Tip: Cash Only! I've been here a handful of time after dropping off my car for service at the nearby garage. There's free wifi here, so I can usually keep myself busy while the mechanics work on their unpredictable time lines. Awesome coffee. One of my favorite shops in Seattle. Definitely what I miss most about living on Beacon Hill. The DJ barista (can't remember his name) makes the best coffee by far! If he's working, you are in luck. Luis is great, and their new patio is fantastic. The building is very cute and tucked away between houses on a pleasant neighborhood. We chose this based on photos and that it was a tad off our route on our road trip. However, we were disappointed when we ordered. My friend and I both received a chai but it was incredibly strong. It was bitter and left an unpleasant after taste. When we came, I wanted something to eat while on the road but their pastries were far too big for my liking (but would be great for anyone else!). I asked for a breakfast sandwich but the barista said that their toaster was broken and that they keep the sign up because the toaster being broken deters people from buying it. Had I lived in the area I would have been fine with it but since we were just passing through with no access to a microwave I had to drop my order. I felt unwelcomed to be honest? The place looked super cozy and perhaps we swung by on a bad day since the Chai was bitter and toaster was broken but the atmosphere was also INCREDIBLY quiet. They have a mocha mexicano here that is not made from a powdered mix: the barista actually has to grind up a chocolate bar (from Mexico!) by hand. It's quite good! It's better hot, but with the weather lately I haven't wanted any hot drinks. Still great though! Or to really beat the heat, they make a coconut lemonade that's fantastic. Tried this place on a whim while waiting for someone to meet me elsewhere, and I must say I honestly based my choice off the fact I read they had wine ;) unfortunately for me, they were out of wine- but I had a chai tea latte instead. They have hemp milk, so bonus points for that! The chai seemed a little weak, but to their benefit I usually order extra chai which I forgot to order this time. The inside was super cute! I was looking for a place to wait for a friend close to the Beacon Hill light rail station the other day and yelp directed me to The Station. I have to say that I am so glad that I came here. I had absolutely THE BEST raspberry scone along with a soy latte that was perfectly made. Seriously, that scone was amazing. I think they must put hazelnuts and other types of nuts in the batter that just add a great complexity, flavor and texture to the scone.
