We just moved to DE from NY and our realtor recommended we check out the town of Berlin,MD. Such a cute town with lots of interesting shops and places to dine or grab a beer or a cocktail. We read about The Sterling Tavern in Coast magazine and decided to check it out. We sat at the bar and enjoyed meeting and chatting with Hunter, the bartender who was friendly and attentive. On our next visit to Berlin we ate at The Sterling and had a great lunch. I had a salad with blackened chicken. The greens were bright and crisp and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The Sterling makes all of their sauces and dressings in house and they are fantastic. They have Guinness on tap which is my husband's favorite beer so another plus for that. He enjoyed his lunch too. Great staff and outstanding food! We had a family event at the Sterling Tavern yesterday (booked the first floor and arranged a limited menu for our guests) and it could not have been any better. The owners worked with us to create a personalized menu that was lovely. The waitstaff and bartender were just great, and the food was stellar! VERY generous portions. To start,I have come here a lot.Let's start with the good.They have the best chicken fingers.Their fresh and big.Get at happy hour and' it's even a better deal.I usually get the fish sandwich, whether it's the flounder meal or mahi sandwich it's great..Here comes the downside!The manager of the place we're going to call him genius! Is the problem.Let's use two incidents.First, we get charged full price for adding onions rings to order instead of fries.Long story short,he argues like a genius he is for almost 20 minutes instead of letting it go. I tell him I'm a regular and he answers oh well?Again Genius!The second happening occurs last week when by myself I go in and order the chicken tenders and the fish sandwich.The tenders come out at good time ,Then,40 Minutes for the sandwich!No Explanation! When the couple next to me gets their order before me ,I was there before them and they agree,I confront the server who proceeds to tell me Tough! In for a quick lunch . The online menus was interesting so we decided to stop in. Slow start to the service to get drinks but once we got it rolling it came quick . The prime rib sandwich was cooked correctly but there was no flavor to the meat . The other was the rustic flat bread. The main issue with both were the advertised spinach. When I think spinach on something I think fresh not canned it made both soggy and not what was expected. We enjoy going to Sterling knowing we can get great food and cocktails fairly consistent. The only area for improvement is on the service end, other than taking your order and dropping it off there is nothing in between. Well I would have give a 4 star but there ware some issues, most were because of the service. I asked about there drink specials, they gave us a paper with a bunch of them on there. I inquired about three different drinks and he couldn't tell me anything but ya it has vodka and fruit juice or tequila and juice, there was one at the bottom of the menu I asked what it was he said vodka and juice like orange and something else. I said that will be fine, everyone else in the group just had tea or a soda. We also ordered at the same time, mom had a shrimp and pasta dish dad had a scallop special wife had a Ruben and I had the fish and chips. The drinks came out the drink he brought me was made with beer and a shot of liquor not what he told me it was so I sent it back for a orange crush. Two people got salads with there dinner we'll they didn't come out until our food came, dinner came out well three of us, my dad didn't get anything so we told the person that brought the food we were missing his dish. About ten minutes later his comes out I guess he forgot to put the order in. I think he may have had more tables than he could handle at least properly, his tip would have been much better with good service that's for sure. Dads scallops were very good as was the rice mom said hers was good also wife said her sandwich was good and my fish as ok I've had better the ff were soggy shoe string ff don't really go with fish and chips. 6 of us dined on 11/14. We arrived st 430, and promptly were greeted by our server to take drink orders. After drinks, we ordered some starters, and then dinner. We had one dietary issue, and our server accommodated with no problem. The food was outstanding, from the oysters, pretzel, meatloaf dinner, oyster po boy, salad with salmon, and flatbread. Plus, they seated us in a quiet room which was perfect since some of the others were from out of town high school classmates whom I haven't seen for many years. Our party of five enjoyed Mahi Mahi tacos, classic Burger, Fish & Chips and the "Steak and Cake" - filet mignon and crabcake. Of course, some appetizers as well - onion rings and loaded tots. The apps were hot, yummy and prepared perfectly. Large portions but fried fast so we had room for the mains. Fish tacos came with great red onion, cabbage and sauce; Fish and Chips had a HUGE portion of fish, Burger was prepared as requested, the steak and cake was devoured. I met a friend here on a Thursday night at 6:30. It was pretty crowded and the noise level was so high we could not hear each other speak. We Both ordered burgers. Neither came as ordered. Having spent the weekend in OC, we were looking for a quick lunch, maybe even something to eat in the car. In our Yelp search, we found Sterling & are glad we changed our plans. It sits right in the middle of historic Berlin which is a nice quaint town. Our out of state guests were real pleased with our choice. Fish & Chips, flatbread and a Mahi Mahi BLT. Food was great. Mixed review on this place. We were greeted and seated promptly, with drinks coming out at a reasonable time. Keep in mind that we were there for lunch in a Tuesday and there were maybe two other tables with customers when we arrived. The hand-battered fried pickle were piping hot and had a nice sauce. It took more than 20 minutes after we were done with the app for the food to arrive. The server only stopped by twice - once to refill our drinks after mine sat empty for some time and again to check on the food. No apology for the wait time. Not sure if there was a kitchen issue (the table next to us got their order right before us despite ordering 15 minutes after us ) or if server forgot to put in the entree order. When it did arrive, my wife's sandwich was missing both the avocado and mayo she requested. My son really enjoyed his Impossible cheesesteak but the house-made chips were cooked to a very dark color, giving them an unpleasant taste. My "Goat" flatbread was really good. They allowed dogs in the outdoor seating and offered water and treats to the canines as well. We are from the west coast and probably won't have the chance to come back. We understand most restaurants are understaffed this time of the year and certainly had no expectations of being in a hurry , the waitress finally brought our drinks took our orders and left . 30 minutes later 3 of 4 dishes were delivered so we're missing 1 meal. After 5 minutes the missing plater insisted we start eating and slowly we started, thinking the meal would be delivered momentarily ...wrong !!!!! Are here several years in a row and obviously liked it because we come annually. Today there was a piece of garbage in delivered food. They took it back brought new dish back essentially after everyone else was done eating. No manager or any acknowledgment of the garbage in food and full bill. Great place to eat and a great setting right in the heart of old town Berlin. The second floor is the best spot it gives you a over view of the street especially the two person deck they have. At 3 weeks in - or something close - this place is pretty impressive. A few teeny issues that could be as much COVID employee related as possible newbie challenges. Prob the best I've ever had. 2nd time around. First time out it wasn't hot. Returned to kitchen, it came back steaming with a quite lovely garnish of crabmeat forgotten in original serving. New owner or newbie employee? I loved the fact that I could get a cup. A bowl is often too much. Bring back the cups of soup, please. We asked to sit by the window and there was a fly or two. I have decided the fly problem i experience in restaurants comes from me wanting to sit by a window - and the local flies desires to get out by said window. We may have sat by our last window - it's not like we're getting these phenomenal views! Back to the food... Entree was the crab cake sliders - and they were outstanding. Nicely sized balls of 100% lump crabmeat, barely held together by ??? . Couldn't even tell what bound it together! On super fresh slider size brioche rolls. Serving of 3, which we split. Could possibly have been improved by a fast dash of Old Bay... but even the tiniest amount too much would have me b*tching, so a restaurant can't win. Interesting business practice that more businesses need to adopt - we asked for a dessert menu and were directed to the (homemade) ice cream place across the street. One small business owner supporting another during a tough time. Gotta love (and respect!) it. Service was very good. Restaurant was very clean. Owner came out to meet and greet. Quite lovely outdoor seating areas - front one to watch the world go by, the other tucked 'round the side in the shade.
