While passing through Escanaba on a Friday night on our way to Marquette, we decide to stop at the Stone House since the reviews looked good. Unfortunately, we didn't have the best experience. We decided to stay in the bar area for our meal, and my fiance ordered a martini, which he enjoyed. The waitress brought us menus after our drinks. The chairs in the bar area are unusual, and uncomfortable. When she came back to take our order, that's when she rattled off the specials. Too late, our choices were made. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip appetizer, my fiance ordered the kobe beef burger with twice baked potatoes and I ordered the pork chop with asparagus. We both got a salad with our meal, and asked for the house dressing. She came back with a strawberry almond dressed salad, not what we expected when ordering the house dressing, and not very good either. Turns out, there was a $2 up charge for this dressing. Neither of us finished the salad. After the salad she brought out the appetizer, which didn't taste great and was too thick. We didn't finish that either. We each remained hopeful though, that our main courses would be better. As our meal progressed, the bar area became increasingly loud. I understand we chose to stay in the bar area, and on a Friday night, but some of the other patrons were literally shouting in their conversations to be heard. We waited so long for our food, we finally had to ask another waitress to check on our food, as our server was nowhere to be found. When our food finally arrived, my fiance ' s burger was not on a pretzel bun as indicated on the menu, and my pork chop was tough. Our sides were great, but couldn't compensate for the entire meal. Unfortunately, for the price we paid, the service and the food could have both been better, so we won't be trying this location again. read more

The Stonehouse is a far better restaurant than you'll think that you can find in the Upper Penninsula. The food in the smallish dining room is delicious and affordable. The bar seems classy, though I haven't spent much time there. read more

My husband and I relied heavily on Yelp to guide us to good restaurants on a recent trip back to the East Coast from Minnesota. As every traveler knows, it's difficult to eat on the road, as there is really nothing except fast food along the interstates (and that food is nearly always unhealthy). On this particular trip, we decided to travel through northern WI and MI, which took us through Escanaba and right to the Stonhehouse. My husband had a shrimp dish that he is now trying to recreate in our kitchen. My scallops entree was marvelous. All in all, everything was absolutely perfect - the comfortable and attractive dining room, the impeccable service, and - of course - the excellent cuisine. Following our meal we were rejuvenated enough for a few more hours of travel before we stopped for the evening. The Stonehouse will be remembered fondly as an oasis for us on the UP. read more

From the area, ate there MANY times send is the ONLY restaurant I can think of that I've NEVER had a bad meal or poor service! I was visiting Escanaba for work and everyone I talked to up there recommended this place. After I sat down the waitress let me know that there was no Prime Rib that night, which bummed me out, but I got over it. I ended up ordering the New York Strip and twice baked potato. Let me say that this is probably one of the best meals that I have had in a long time. Steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the twice baked potato was fantastic. These guys have a great operation with a strong local following. Bar is crowded.. restaurant is crowded... the food is really very well prepared and much better than one might expect in the UP. Wonderful experience. Great drinks that are well poured. A little weak on wine like most of the UP, but they do have great bottle selections. Make sure to stop! read more

Let me rave about lunchtime. A wonderful break away from the office. Three of our favorites are the salmon, the rich and satisfying bisque and the build your own salad. You can relax and talk, maybe split a dessert, all under the watchful eye of very competent staff. The best part - it's actually very reasonably priced. read more

Service was slow. Waitress seemed rushed. Dinner salad was very good. I ordered the ribs. When they came to the table they were cold and had to be sent back. Not sure, but I think they were microwaved. My husband's chicken parmesan was greasy and the chicken was tasteless and tough. The French onion soup was bland. Sorely disappointed. Stopped here on our trip to Mackinac Island at the recommendation from the guy inside the "Welcome to Wisconsin" tourist shack. I'd like to go back there and thank him, because it was absolutely excellent. We ordered the baked brie appetizer to start, I ordered the half a duck with lingonberry orange sauce, and my friend ordered the poor man's whitefish with tempura asparagus. I LOVED the baked brie and appreciated that they gave a generous amount of toasted bread with it. My friend isn't a big fan of brie, but even she liked it. My duck was phenomenal although I'd recommend going with something other than the side of rice. My friend's tempura asparagus was to die for, so I'd recommend that. We also got creme brulee for dessert, and it was truly very good. I'd highly recommend this place for anyone traveling through. I'll definitely stop here again if I'm ever in the Escanaba area. read more

First time I didn't like the meal. I've been here more than a dozen times and it has always been good. I had the soup and sandwich special, garlic bisque soup with chicken and waffle. The soup was delicious, the chicken was cooked just right, however the waffle had the texture of a Bisquick biscuit and the flavor of Play-Doh. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find such a nice restaurant in Escanaba! My friend and I were working here for three weeks and stopped by on a rare night that we got off early. I had the lobster bisque, which was really incredible, and the arugula salad, which was good but not too heavy on the arugula (diluted with spinach, which was acceptable to me) and also a little too sweet. Overall it was tasty and filling however, for only $12. The wine was good and the service was excellent. I wish the beer list was more extensive. My friend got the Seafood Newburg and really loved it- I think I would probably get an entree instead of a salad next time despite the steep price increase. We had never heard of this place, and stopped there due to the easy access on our way to Sault Ste. Marie. It was on the corner where we needed to turn, and by a gas station so it was really nice. So, we had no expectations of what it even was. We were very surprised when we walked in. It was a Thursday around 7:00pm, and we didn't have to wait for a table. It really gives the appearance inside of fine dining, but it is casual. Everything about our experience was fantastic. The drinks were inexpensive compared to what I am used to paying for. My wife had the whitefish special, and I had the bacon wrapped pork, and we were both very happy. Service was great, and the food was excellent. This was an excellent place for our dinner the other night! We had a late lunch that day so we weren't terribly hungry, but wanted a nice dinner and wine. The smaller portion meals listed at the back of the dinner menu were just the ticket! I had broiled whitefish with a perfectly baked potato and my husband had the perch with a twice-baked potato. We both had tossed salads and glasses of house wine, which were satisfying. The bread was likely house-made and yummy. Our waitress provided fabulous service and even produced a "to go" pen for me to use when I dropped some buttered potato on my top! Definitely will drop by again when we're in the area! read more

Waitresses have always been great. Been going to this place for over 20 years. Today, during lunch, the hostess was a real witch. My family has never been treamore awful ever! Food was horrible. The price does not project the portions or quality of the food at all. I think that today I personally saw the end of the Stonehouse. I hope I'm never asked to go there again! If so I will get a side salad. Pretty sure they can't screw that up. I think the Stone House is as good as it gets here in the upper Peninsula of Michigan. Dined there many times and have never been disappointed. Their broiled whitefish is always excellent. I had the prime rib which was full of huge flavor. This is something that I rarely have luck with at other restaurants. Highly, highly recommend. Over priced, crowded, not casual, loud and over rated. Prime rib was smoked to death you couldn't even taste the beef. Seems to be a "clicky" hang out for business owners, etc. Not a good family dining place. Just wanted a nice meal, did not want to sit at a bar for an hour waiting for a table. My husband got the special (Fish) he was not impressed. Very dark inside not bright and cheerful. The table cloths, linen napkins and table décor was nice but would have preferred better food over table décor. We prefer Hereford and Hops, at least our steak or prime rib is excellent and its family friendly. I guess with enough cocktails in you the food might seem okay, but if you are interested in food, go elsewhere. read more

By far, the Stonehouse offers the best food in the Escanaba/Gladstone area. Parking is a problem, though.

I've only eaten here once, and it was about 5 years ago. It was rather pricy, but I remember it as the very best food I've ever gotten in a restaurant. At least in a U.S. restaurant, anyway. I had the very best barbecue ribs ever. My wife had a 3-way lobster combo that was excellent, especially the grilled lobster. We paid a lot, yet will DEFINITELY stop in if we pass that way again. read more

This has always been the goto place in town for special occasions (for us) and has always been very consistant and best food in town with great service. We recently had our first disappointing meal with family from out of town after we boasted about this place. Really long wait for food after salad coarse and then not all meals served at the same time, so we had one of those awkward moments at the table staring at our food getting cold while waiting for others to get theirs. Would have given 3 stars but this was our first bad experience here. The food was pretty good , but the portion size is really starting to dwindle. If your going to demand $24 to $ 29 for a seafood dish or steak here in Escanaba, and want locals to come back, don't diss me on the portions. I hope the fact that there is a lack of competition for fine dining in our area doesn't let quality, service , and portions decline at one of our favorite local gems to be a trend. read more
