service was so top notch! honestly a 10/10 just for checking in with us, asking about our flavor opinions, and overall being a great host to the space. the decor is also so vibey and has great photo opportunities! very unassuming exterior for an incredible space. parking isn't too bad (wed afternoon) the campfire was so good! very unexpected smoky flavor to the drink that was a little strange to me but it didn't deter me from the drink. the chocolate is SO rich in the best way possible! none of the shakes were too sweet (dare i say they lean on somehow not being sweet). shakes are a bit pricey but the toppings, flavor profile, and service make up for it! would def go back and get this again! read more

This is the ultimate expression of milkshakes. The flavor of the shakes are incredible. Somehow the campfire has a mild smokiness to the chocolate flavor. On top there are dipables that turn an incredible shake into an amazing experience. The Street has a cookie dough ball on a stick to dip, the Campfire has toasted marshmallows. The vibes in the shop are perfect. The decor is fun and just nice to look at. They had a kids movie playing at the counter for them to watch while waiting for the shakes and while enjoying the shakes too. The owner is super welcoming and I can confidently say this is the first time I've had someone ask how we thought the milkshakes were. 10/10 will be coming back more often. read more

I tried the Love Letter, and it was a decadent strawberry shake that was incredibly creamy and packed with flavor. It wasn't overly sweet, just rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced. The real surprise though? The grilled donut holes that came with it. They were warm, slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and honestly the perfect pairing with the shake. So good. It's been awhile since I've come here but thought I'd write a review. The staff is very welcoming and friendly, almost like you are hanging out with family. They often have live bands that perform while you enjoy a huge shareable milkshake! The inside is art/plant galore. Parking is easy and the drinks are good. I would say they are a bit on the sweeter side but you are there to get something sweet so thats to be expected. All in all, picturesque drinks and fun vibes all around read more

The Straw is hands down my favorite dessert place in OC, especially since I have a dairy allergy. It's so hard to find dessert spots that offer dairy-free milkshake options, and The Straw does it perfectly. I am absolutely obsessed with The Love Letter, a strawberries & cream milkshake with powdered grilled donut bites. The name couldn't be more fitting since my boyfriend and I always share it haha. The workers here are so sweet and thoughtful too. They've even given us two straws before so we can share, which is such a small gesture but honestly still makes things feel special. The place itself has so much character too. There are fun little trinkets all around, and they even have a Yoda tucked in the corner, which just adds to the charm. LOVE THIS PLACE When my friend and I pulled up (private parking up close) we were shocked at how busy it was on a Tuesday Despite how busy it was and only one person working, Patrick still took the time to walk up to us while multitasking and greet us, asked if we had any questions, told us he has vegan substitutes and gave us the whole rundown on things (I can't stress enough that a milkshake place has vegan / dairy free options) they also have an option to add alcohol. Another bonus, they are a nut free environment for anyone who has severe allergies. The shakes we picked The love letter-strawberries & cream milkshake with powdered grilled donut bites. La Bella Donna -espresso milkshake with tiramisu inside (both were a solid 10 but I think I liked this one the most) There's also a popcorn machine inside. You serve yourself. It's next to a water cooler as well for free water and free popcorn. I even got sucked into playing the claw machine while I was there Patrick (the owner) seems to be very into the community. He serves local craft beer and while we were here he had a special limited edition milkshake inspired by the Play - shucked. Which is a musical playing in Costa Mesa Nov 11-23rd. The milkshake was called children of the corn These milkshakes were delicious! They did not have an ounce of artificial taste. They all tasted extremely fresh and real. None of that fake flavoring. And the thickness of these shakes! I can only imagine how good they are with the adding alcohol option The atmosphere was so cute. I really loved the milkshake bar set up. When I talked to Patrick and he mentioned he used to bartend, I could see where the inspiration for this came from and how he was great at small talk and customer service. You could pull up a chair and enjoy watching everything be made right in front of you. When I arrived there was a group of kids sitting at the milkshake bar and talking to Patrick about music. They were all talking about different bands and etc. I can't stress enough how great Patrick was They have a really nice fire pit. (It was stored inside during the day) That blew my mind for this hole in the wall milkshake place. I asked the owner when the fire pit comes out. He said on the weekends when it gets really packed. They also have games you can play (I saw a bunch of card games) So if you like to eat outside / or just meeting up with friends for a shake, this will entertain you for a while. They also have karaoke nights and other activities / events. I could go on forever about how great this place is. I'm going to have to come back in the name of science to try the alcohol add on to my shake lol 5 stars for Patrick the owner 5 stars for the atmosphere 5 stars for how delicious the shakes were 5 stars for having a bunch of vegan / dairy free and nut free accommodations read more

A cute, ambient milkshake shop! They have items where they collab with locals, and this time, there were two special milkshakes they were promoting. I ended up just getting the classic "Street." You can never go wrong with a Cookie Monster flavor The gentleman who served us was bright and welcoming. The milkshake itself was yummy! The consistency was good, not too thick, not too thin. The sweetness level was a good amount as well. Goldilocks would be very satisfied if she was looking for a milkshake and not porridge lol I would love to come back to try their other flavors as well!! They also have a cute little popcorn machine where you can help yourself to and some little claw machines with cute stuffies (some Sanrio things as well!) Cute little spot, and Patrick the owner is always coming up with new shakes and happy to recommend something to you with enthusiasm. This spot has been on my hubby's list for ever since we thought a place just for milkshakes was so fun! I went on a Friday night and it was quiet at first, but by 8pm it was hopping. I realized that Friday is their karaoke night so that was surprising and fun! The shakes are yummy and fun. I love that they have non dairy options since I'm lactose intolerant too. Also outside they have cornhole and a fire pit which just makes the whole environment feel cozy. This is definitely a winner! read more

Delicious milkshakes! The owner was so nice. He had lactaid pills - so no excuse not to come here and try milkshakes!! The place was decorated nicely. Had a piano, and open karaoke on Fridays. One random Thursday night I realize it's time for a sweet drink. Milkshakes were on my radar and I randomly found this place. It's a cute vintage-like look to the whole vibe! I ended up with "the street" milkshake which was an Oreo shake with cookie dough topping. Do not underestimate the size of these milkshakes because they are filling! And the toppings are meant to dip into the shake. There might be a decent wait for the drink, but it'll be worth it. The drinks may take longer because of how long it takes to get the right amount of ingredients blended to perfection. Also, milkshakes have a thick texture so it can honesty just take a little. Stopped by since I was in the area and the last time I passed by the place there was a long line outside. I got the Donkey Kong milkshake that comes with a cannoli shell that is meant to be dipped in the milkshake. The presentation was impressive but the taste didn't quite match how good it looked. I guess I was expecting more in terms of flavor since it was so busy. Maybe I picked a more generic flavor combination and should've chose something different. Stopped by spontaneously with my brother after lunch nearby. Ecstatic we did. From the moment we entered, the uniqueness of the decor caught my eye and brought about delightful conversation between my brother and myself AND the very friendly counter help. The stylish menu offered many unique milkshakes and ice cream flavors with these freshly prepared hot fresh donut sticks as garnishes. We were very excited to receive our choices and sat outside and enjoyed the flavorful treats and comfortable VIBE. We saw that they have live music and karaoke as well on certain nights and got even more excited to bring our spouses and others back to enjoy those events. We ordered The Campfire and Cookie Monster Both were delicious. They are large servings and very sweet. If you have a sweet tooth you will love these! The toppings they stick in the drinks were stale. Makes them look really pretty and picture worthy but they're not yummy. The Cookie Monster has a tint of blue at the body as a nice throw back to its namesake. The music inside is very loud. Sounds like a rave. Hard to talk over it but if you love music it's quite the jam. The place is small inside with limited seating. They also have bar counter seating and you can watch them assemble the shakes. Everyone working there is super friendly. read more

Afterschool treats! Pretty fortunate to be here when it's not busy. Turns out they have musical instruments- piano, drums, guitar, for the skilled to play with. There's karaoke Fridays and open mic night every other Tuesday!! As for the shakes we got the street and the forest. The street was delicious and the cookie dough embellishment was pretty! It's a dense shake that's very filling. The forest was kinda different. I think the mochi bits in the shake threw me off. I do prefer the old school mint and chip shakes though. Sooo yummy! The service here is amazing and the milkshakes are very well made with a variety of toppings and garnishes. The interior is very cute and is similar to a bar. We got the Glamp-fire which is a neopolitan twist on the classic s'mores, garnished with graham crackers, roasted marshmallows, puff pastry, and a gummy worm. It was amazing! My friend and I were craving a milkshake and stumbled upon this spot near OCC. I love the ambiance as it gave it a bar vibe with milkshakes instead. My friend and I enjoyed how kind the workers were and felt very cozy here. I got the Glamp fire and my friend got the Love Letter. The serving is hugeee!! Honestly shouldve shared but we did our best to drink all of it. I never had milkshakes that taste salty before. Its delicious but not something I would get too often. I might come back to try their flatbreads and get a different milkshake. Possibly there will be one I like. Hello everyone! It's milkshake time, and The Straw might be one of the few places in OC that exclusively serves them! This place is located in a little strip mall, and it's decorated nicely, with board games that you can borrow! It's very purplish-blue, and I think they have live music sometimes, but it's quite a small venue for that. The guy at the counter was pleasant, and gave us some good recommendations. Onto the milkshakes themselves. They're fun, if not a little pricey. I could see this place being really popular as a fun hangout spot for people who might be school age, but I think it's not for me personally. If you're into milkshakes, though, this might be your place! read more

What a hidden gem! I wish I knew about this place sooner because the milkshakes and vibes are immaculate. My boyfriend and I had just finished our dinner date and wanted something sweet to share. We very much enjoyed the music, the lighting, the games offered, and of course, the 'Apple Bottom' milkshake! There were two guys working when we went and they were both so kind! They have some fun events on some days that I will definitely have to check out like karaoke, live music, and art classes. This has been in the Costa Mesa community for so long, and it's one of those places that make you think "Why didn't I come here, sooner?" You can see the owner's fun personality shine throughout the store - with Disney decor; a drum set (they do karaoke every Friday, I believe); fun pop music; and smiling faces by the staff. Jake and Luis were the two staffers who were working that day, when my family and I - 8 in total - came to try the milkshakes (my son's girlfriend found it on Instagram and wanted to check it out!). We were not disappointed. My wife and I - along with my son's girlfriend's mom - were blowing our money on the claw machines; while the rest of the gang watched music videos playing. We ordered so many different milkshakes, I can't remember them all - but I got the Donkey Kong; and I know the rest of the gang got cookie cough; cookies and cream; and other items. Overall, the staff was wonderful to us; and the milkshakes were amazing and I'm still thinking about it. read more

Want a chill date spot with a chill drink? Then the Straw is the spot for you! I love the bartender style of service and the sort of vintage style of this place. I ordered the boardwalk, which surprisingly tasted not overly chocolatey and had a hint of saltiness. It was a rich drink without being overbearing. For a lighter dessert, I recommend the Donkey Kong, which had plenty of the banana flavor while being its own unique shake. read more

I'm old school, I actually like engaging with people. So I went to the counter. I ordered the rib sandwich without looking, and was a little shocked by the total. The sandwich itself is 15 bucks, I ordered a small fry which was $4.50, and a small drink which was $4. With a 15% tip my total came out to $28. Definitely a little shell-shocked by that. Now let's talk about the sandwich. It came to the table and at first glance it looked very small. When I picked it up there was a very generous portion of rib meat inside like a big chunk of rib meat. Huge pickles and a lot of sauce. It was a great sandwich. Do not get me wrong, what I ordered again? Maybe. They don't really have a meal deal that includes fries and a drink so it's sort of all a la carte. Now let's talk about the taste. The fries were perfectly cooked, and the sandwich itself was a solid 10. That being said, I would definitely feel more comfortable paying $12 for this sandwich, as I think 15 is a little exuberant. And you don't really get that many fries for $4.50. I can't imagine what the meal deal would have been, but I'm sure people would absolutely balk at that price. I would have given it a five-star review, but that is way too much for that sandwich. As delicious as it was, I just don't feel right spending that much for a sandwich. If it could be reworked, and the price dropped down I would be all in in a heartbeat. Bottom line? If you've been wanting to try it, I say go ahead.
