First off, the negative: the parking is absolutely insane and always raising throughout the years, so if you're coming here for the beach and just the beach (no food/ drinks), then this is absolutely not worth it. If you don't mind paying an arm and a leg for good food and not the greatest service, then they can validate your parking for you, making it a better deal; not free, but lower than before. Their menu is kind of confusing because one side is dedicated to family sized meals, but the other size doesn't have everything on the menu that they truly serve. When I came here last weekend with my family, the blonde waitress that was taking care of us didn't give us a kids menu for my sister when seating us. When she came by again after we got seated, I asked her for one and motioned towards my sister. She asked, "Who at the table here is a kid?" in a serious tone and had a slight attitude. I just calmly said, "My sister," and motioned again, like before, towards her. She asked, "Well how old is she?" "11.....," I said. And she rolled her eyes and walked away. After five minutes, she came back with a kid's menu, although I never really knew what the full issue was. I understand that they don't want adults ordering off of the kid's menu in order to make more money on the adult meals, even though they can be too big for some people depending on what you get. However, a kid that maybe looks a couple years older wasn't as big of a deal as she made it out to be, rolling her eyes to a whole family. When we got our food, which was around 25 minutes after we ordered, a lot of the dishes my family and I ordered came in big portions and could be saved for dinner or another meal. I had also ordered a frozen margarita prior, but was disappointed when I got it and it wasn't frozen, but a very, very melted down version. It tasted good and wasn't too strong, though. All in all, I'd maybe recommend if you've never been before just to go once to check out the space, food, ambiance, and views that they're really known for. It's truly gorgeous since they're located right on the beach, and it's an amazing location. However, the customer service and prices make this restaurant not an occurring place that we go to.

When I first moved to the Westlake area, I was fortunate enough to discover it, and from my very first visit, it became my sanctuary. With its breathtaking views and the warm, caring staff, every visit felt like coming home. Their kindness and genuine care went far beyond what anyone could expect from hospitality. The team remembered the small details of my life, offered heartfelt advice during challenging moments, and inspired me to persevere when times were tough. For so long, The Sunset wasn't just a place to dine--it was a haven of comfort, belonging, and encouragement. With a heavy heart, I share how much has changed over the past six months. The atmosphere that once defined The Sunset has been overshadowed by unprofessional and toxic leadership. On multiple occasions, I've witnessed the current manager, Henri, berating staff in front of patrons, leaving them visibly distressed and creating a tense environment for employees and guests alike. The warmth and welcoming spirit that made The Sunset so special feels like it's slipping away, and it's heartbreaking to see loyal patrons leave mid-service because of the uncomfortable atmosphere. What's even more troubling are the instances where Henri has appeared intoxicated while on duty. Rather than addressing customers' concerns or ensuring efficient service, he has ignored patrons, belittled staff, and even prioritized his drink orders above those of waiting guests. Such behavior feels deeply unprofessional and disrespectful to guests and the hardworking staff who have been the heart of The Sunset for so many years. As a local, I eat regularly at Sage, Kristy's Wood Oven, Zooma Sushi, Geoffrey's, Lil's, Moonshadows, Nobu, etc. I always find myself coming back to The Sunset. One of the owners is always here, welcoming the guests, and especially making sure that the restaurant is offering good food and good hospitality. I get a warm feeling whenever I visit The Sunset, whether for lunch or for dinner. The ocean view from The Sunset looks over spectacular Westward Beach and onwards the whole length of Zuma Beach and Broad Beach. There's nowhere else like this view in Malibu from a restaurant. The staff are unfailingly courteous, prompt, and welcoming, from the hostess to the waiters. I've never once in the many times I've eaten here had to wait for the staff for something. They are very attentive, and on the obverse, I never feel rushed. Also, some folks might call me picky and demanding, yet no matter what I ask for at The Sunset, the wait staff have unfailingly gotten it for me. I must say that the wait staff at Kristy's Wood Oven, Sage, and Geoffrey's are just as good, BUT those restaurants' menu prices are quite a bit more than The Sunset. The food has never disappointed me, and everything is too delicious. I particularly enjoy their lunches, when the restaurant is less crowded. My favorite appetizer is the calamari -- perfectly crispy and light, served with a fingerlicking-good marinara sauce. What's even better is that The Sunset a few months back changed their lunch menu, and it's no longer the same as the dinner menu. The lunch menu is now moderately priced, and I've eaten all of the gourmet sandwiches -- they're all good, and my favorite is the soft shell crab. Delish!!! Perfectly crispy, served in a fresh-baked roll with just enough chewiness to know its mixed and baked on the premises. All of The Sunset's breads are sooooo good. What I don't like, and this has to do with the ambiance: - the wide-open windows. It's too darn cold with the ocean breeze. Wow what a great restaurant!!! It has it all. A great bar area where you can sit and have a drink and or a appetizer/ dinner/lunch. Because of the friendly environment there's usually someone nice to have a chat with if you so desire. Then there's the lounge area with casual comfortable seating with nice ocean views. Down stairs seating in the dining area is casual yet elegant and the upstairs seating is very posh for special times with your favorite friends or family. It's like the warmth of the mediterranean but in Malibu.Great staff and management but the real reason I keep coming back is for the incredible flavors from the creative and unique dishes served by executive chef Caroline Bertsch. She is a master at making even the most common dishes zing with flavor. For Starters The Mediterranean Gilled Octopus is the best I have ever tasted as well as the Arugula and Basil Pesto Flatbread. Even the simple Grass fed beef meatballs would give your grandma's a run for their money. The salads are fresh with light/tasty and healthy dressings. I like the Allegria and the Prawn salads (my favorites). But the entrees from the classic Prime Beef Burger, Fish and Chips and Spaghetti Bolognese are what separates The Sunset from most eateries and not just in Malibu. There's the more adventurous Jumbo Scallops pan seared with porcini mushrooms, english peas, caramelized lemon risotto and the Sunset Seafood Stew with spicy lobster, tomato broth, calms, mussels, shrimp crostini and if you like beef the grilled filet Angus Beef mignon is on the everyday entree selections too. The coolest thing though is coming in and looking at the black board for the daily specials to see what Caroline has created with what's new and fresh and how she has taken the gifts nature has given her and found a way to pass those blessings on to all of us who are fortunate to be able to experience her talents and the whole package The Sunset has to offer. read more

This is the real review. I accidentally posted under a different profile by mistake. :) My husband & I got married at the Sunset Restaurant on the beach in September 2014. It was the most magical day. We were surprised that we had not been back to the restaurant since. We decided to celebrate our anniversary there this year 2021. We made a reservation but really wanted a specific table, so we waited for one by the open window, so we could watch the pretty sunset over the ocean. This place was as beautiful, low-key, classy, & inspiring as it was when we were married there. The front of the house staff, both the host & the manager, Jason, were so welcoming. Since we were waiting at the bar for our table, we were able to engage in a few chats with them. They were inspired to hear our story & look at our wedding pictures. They told us the owner Franco was in Italy. My husband, being part Italian, shares his name but it's Frank, yet many call him Franko. We ordered a glass of wine each to toast to our anniversary. Our server was the nicest. I ordered fish tacos (delectable) & my husband the wagyu beef burger (which he loved), but we wanted a side of vegetables. We asked about the brussel sprouts & she said those were the best! She was right. Melt in your mouth! We chatted with her a bit & found out a friend wanted to get married there. We told her of our wonderful wedding experience & that we highly recommend it. When we ordered dessert, carrot cake, which was the top layer of our wedding cake, Ines, the manager, came over to let us know it would be comped. She said the server had told her about our anniversary & that we were married there. That was so nice. Other than Geoffrey's, this is the other Malibu restaurant with a superb ocean view from just about any table of Westward Beach, one of the most filmed beaches and a stand-in for other beach locations around the world featured in many films, TV shows, and TV ads. The beach is not a good swimming beach, as the waves are best for the more advanced surfer what with a short , shallow shelf and crunchy waves. Lots of beach marriages occur right across from the restaurant front, and when one glances away from the gorgeous ocean view, a bridal party is oftentimes seated and one can watch the nuptials during one's conversation. The meals at breakfast (weekends only), lunch, and dinner are among the finest available in Malibu. Delicious fare, and well worth the expense. My favorite is the Langostinos, and the lamb chops are another I like to order again and again. The service has always been very good and attentive. At times, I've had to wait 30 minutes for my food, but waiters on more than one occasion have invariably offered a free dessert or appetizer. (I don't drink, so they didn't offer free drinks.) I like The Sunset better than the nearby Savory for its open-feeling dining area, forever ocean views, larger and more varied menu, friendly sophistication of their waiters (though Savory's lunchtime waiters are excellent), and the fact that The Sunset's tables are not right next to each other allowing for a bit more privacy than Savory's crowded tables. Savory's booths are not crowded, but if you luck out of a booth, you're practically seated with other folks at their tables, kind of like eating in restaurants in Rome where one might be asked to share a table with strangers. This restaurant started itself off on a bad foot. We had a reservation for 7:30.. we didn't get seated till 8:15. Not only that, but the hosts were very unhelpful and rather rude. They did not apologize for the wait or do anything to make us comfortable while waiting. They also seated multiple tables instead of us. The two guys working couldn't seem to care less about us to be honest, which was very disappointing as we had a reservation. It was also practically impossible to get a drink at the bar -- it seemed like every worker at this restaurant was ignoring their customers... bizzare. Once we got seated we negotiated to get free drinks which was nice but also the least they could do. To this places credit, I will say the drinks were fabulous. We got the Bikini Martini, Pear Martini, and the Spicy Pineapple Margarita -- they were all great. They gave us bread and butter which is always a classic, and it didn't disappoint. The appetizers we got were the chips and guac, wagyu meatballs, & the brussel sprouts. All of them were great and I would say the brussels were the standout. For my entree I got the risotto shrimp. It was very creamy and delicious. I was overall very pleasantly suprised by every dish I ate at this restaurant. With such a crappy start to the night, I was glad the food was at least satisfying. We recently hosted our rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks at The Sunset Restaurant, and it was absolutely fantastic! With about 35 people for dinner and all our out-of-town wedding guests for drinks, we rented out the entire upstairs, which offered a stunning view of the sunset--just as the restaurant's name promises. The food was delicious and came out right on time, which kept everyone happy and satisfied. When it came time to transition the space from dinner to drinks, it was a bit tricky managing so many guests and getting the drinks flowing while cleaning up, but this was more of a scheduling hiccup on our end than anything the restaurant did wrong. Once everything was set up, the drinks were flowing, and everyone had an absolute blast. Valet service was a breeze, making it easy for our guests to arrive and leave without any hassle. The restaurant even stayed open an extra hour just for us, which was incredibly accommodating. A special shoutout to Jewel, who was an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the planning process. Her attention to detail and dedication to ensuring our evening went smoothly made all the difference. I came to try the sunset last night with a group of close friends as it came highly recommended by friends of mine. I have to say for a restaurant that is considered so high scale I was pretty disappointed. First of all when we came in we were greeted by a girl with blondish hair who was very nice and accommodating. But when we saw our server our appetite was gone. I believe his name was John, had very long hair pulled back loosely in a pony tail and extremely long facial hair. It was gross and we even saw hairs on his shirt. THEN we noticed he had really long fingernails that almost curled back and had dirt in them. my stomach turned! It was disgusting and seemed to me like something that should be unacceptable. We were too embarrassed to ask for another server so we just dealt with it. =/ I used to work in the service industry and presenting customers with a server who appears to have bad hygiene is a MAJOR turn off. I want to be served by someone who looks clean has short or at least CLEAN fingernails and I don't want to worry about long facial hairs falling into my food!!! The food wasn't bad. 5 Stars - A Truly Unforgettable Experience! I had the absolute pleasure of dining at The Sunset Restaurant in Malibu, and from start to finish, it was nothing short of exceptional. The entire staff made the evening feel like a VIP experience. Huge thanks to Manager Ron and Henri from the management team--both were incredibly welcoming and made sure everything ran smoothly. Our amazing waitresses Gabriella and Diana provided flawless service with genuine warmth, and host Leland set the tone for the night with his friendly and professional vibe. The real culinary highlight? The lobster linguine--absolutely incredible! Rich, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Every bite was a reminder that I was in seafood heaven. I recently visited The Sunset Restaurant in Malibu after a day at the beach. The location is definitely beautiful, and they do welcome dogs, which I appreciated since I had my two pups with me. However, there were a few hiccups that made the experience less than ideal. The only parking option was valet, which more or less nudged me into dining there. While the ambiance was charming and the view was great, the service left a bit to be desired. It took quite a while to get my order, even though the patio wasn't that crowded. The maître d' who took my order seemed a bit unsure about drink recommendations, and unfortunately, a simple request for a lime never made it to the table despite a couple of reminders. As for the food, my mocktail was overly sweet, and the tricolor salad was quite bland for the price point. The wheat bread I ordered came out a bit burnt. Overall, for a meal that ended up being around $50 just for myself, plus valet and tip, I expected a bit more attention to detail. It's a lovely spot, but I can't say I'd strongly recommend it given the service and the overall value. read more

This is a gem in Malibu. Unfortunately not everybody knows about this restaurant because it's a secluded location, in Zuma beach. This is a unique destination because you can eat, walk to the beach and watch the sunset. AMAZING. Nowhere else you can have such a blessing experience in Los Angeles. You can even eat with your feet on the sand. It is always a magical experience for those of us who go out with great friends, or loving family members and who are in a happy mood. There's so much to be grateful for. There are lots of horrible places in this world where war and/or famine is happening. Remember you create your own experiences in life. Go to The Sunset Restaurant with great company and you'll be guaranteed to a memorable evening or afternoon. Like any of us who feel blessed because we are healthy and loved. Life is beautiful. I was so excited to try this place, but after just a few minutes I knew this was not going in the right direction. We made reservations for indoors and had requested a window seat. They took us outside where it was quite chilly, I asked if we could get a table inside and the girl just gave us a dirty look, but took us inside, placed our menus down and then walked away. (Not to mention a table in the back of the restaurant). So we decided to order a couple of appetizers, shrimp cocktail and the cheese plate. The cheese plate was ok, however the shrimp cocktail was absolutely inedible, it tasted like it had been sitting in some dishwater for hours, the "signature" cocktail sauce tasted like ketchup with some other ingredients. I also asked for horseradish, and was brought a cup of about 3/4 water with some horseradish in the bottom. We did not stay a moment longer and are now headed somewhere else. read more

So this is a review based more on the bar scene/friday night kind of thing. My friend dragged me out here to go see a band called the Red Muffs; the band was pretty decent, just a cover band played some cash, gnr, and a lot of top 40 kind of stuff and it was fun; you know who doesn't like a good cover band? The restaurant/bar/vibe itself was ok; kind of crowded, I guess that's a good sign but it took forever for me to get a drink and I'm cute so it's rare for a bartender not to notice me...so what's up with that? I paid $6 for a beer, so not great but decent enough for the area, I'm not really into the Malibu thing/vibe. I can't really rate the food because I didn't have any, but I think I'd like to try it out for a brunch/lunch kind of thing so updates to come. read more

Visited The Sunset Restaurant in Malibu recently and the location is absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere is relaxing and the setting makes it a really nice place to sit, enjoy the view, and spend time with friends or family. Overall the experience was good, but there were a couple issues with the food. Two of the hamburgers wasn't cooked properly we asked for well done and it wasn't cooked at all, and another burger third one arrived about 30 minutes after the rest of our meals, which made it a little awkward for the table. Aside from that, the rest of the food and the environment were enjoyable. Time to sunset The Sunset or completely overhaul. This was once a place that was enjoyable and now it's run down and the food is bad. I give it one star for the view but with fine dining prices this place disappoints with diner type food. The heirloom tomatoes were too squishy to eat. The calamari and salmon were undercooked. We sent back the salmon dinner and they cooked the whole plate causing the sauce to overcook and melt into the other food. It was a big greasy, inedible disappointment. They were apologetic and kind, but brought us a dessert without asking and it, too looked inedible. Sadly, never going back. What happened to the fine dining and weddings every weekend? My first Malibu dining experience at the Sunset Restaurant during their happy hour was a delightful surprise! The lower-priced dishes from the regular menu allowed us to savor a variety of their offerings. The drink specials, especially on wine and well drinks, added to the enjoyment of the evening. Our seats provided a mesmerizing view of the ocean, although the sofa seating made me a tad warm after some time. The New England clam chowder was genuinely delicious, though the portion for a cup was tiny. The fish and chips were a standout -- thin, crisp batter, tasty fish. The ahi tuna sandwich (cooked fully through at my request) was good but not memorable, and the crab cakes were just okay. Drinks missed the mark. The piña colada had chunks of unblended ice in it, and the margarita was fine but forgettable. A note on cleanliness: the walkway down to the beach right in front of Gladstones' patio was filthy -- trash everywhere. Not Gladstones' doing, but given the prime oceanfront setting, it's worth flagging to management, since it drags down an otherwise stunning location. If it were my restaurant, I would have some pride and clean it up, especially knowing that most of that gross trash will end up in our beautiful Pacific Ocean or hurting birds and other sea life. The whole restaurant was kind of dirty. The windows overlooking the sea were filthy and foggy and had bird poop on them. The bathroom was a certifiable mess and there appeared to be mildew on the ceiling. The place needs a facelift. It's just starting to look like they don't care. Parking was $16 and conveniently located but the parking lot was covered with trash and cigarette butts too. Have some pride and dedication and CLEAN UP. Also, whatever classless humans are trashing such a beautiful place, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

It sounded like a winner from the description and looked fantastic when it arrived, but after the first bite, I knew something was off. The meat had virtually no seasoning or flavor. Even a basic amount of salt would have made a huge difference. The burger came with their house-made potato chips, which again looked great, but unfortunately had the exact same problem. They tasted like plain fried potatoes with seemingly no salt or seasoning at all. I don't know if the kitchen was simply having an off day, but overlooking something as fundamental as seasoning, especially salt, is pretty disappointing for food at this price point. There was clearly effort put into the presentation, but presentation only gets you so far when the food itself lacks flavor. Great location, excellent hospitality, and very friendly service, but based on the beer and food I had, there's a lot of room for improvement in the kitchen and brewery.

Avoid this after-thought of a brunch if you can, stick to their dinner menu and enjoy the incredible ambiance that is Saddle Peak Lodge. What a disaster though! For $800, Fogo de Chao, Maestros, Flemmings, even a drive to Alexanders in Pasadena would of been memorable. Shoot, should of just gone to Lure for the 10,000th time, at least it would of offered the same boring consistency. Super disappointed in Saddle Peak Lodge, as my family and I come here 1-2 times a year for dinner. Sadly this experience sums up why their over-all Yelp score is 3.5 stars now, and I'm sadly adding fuel to the fire for what once was one of my favorite restaurants.
