Hawaiian Plate - tofu and fried rice (+ $2 extra)

This has taken me a couple of days to think about because I wanted this to be a hit. We just finished watching Lilo & Stitch so what perfect way to follow up the movie, but a Hawaiian lunch that wasn't fast food. However, due to a few things, I think there's potential to improve. 1. The space - its awkwardly small. The bar takes half the space and I'm really unsure how they handle a busy Friday night. The Fin hotel had a lobby, the switchboard restaurant, and then a coffee shop. The restaurant has 3 tables, plus bar seating. 2. Entrance - no one greeted us. We didn't know where to go to get seated. One couple was eating at a table, and another pair of guys were at the bar. My partner eventually walked to the coffee shop to check where to get seated and someone came out to help us. 3. Seating arrangement - at first, my party of 3 was going to be seated in the corner, awkwardly next to the old couple who was already taking up the table snuggly right next to it. We asked if we can sit at the table by the window. A third chair was pulled up and I sat partly in the walkway space. 4. Brunch menu - great selection of food, but limited in vegetarian options. I was excited to see that tofu was an option for the Hawaiian plate. In fact, my whole party of 3 ordered the Hawaiian plate, but we each chose different proteins - tofu, Kahlua pork, and bulgogi beef. I eat tofu A LOT. I cook tofu A LOT. This tofu was WEAK and I was UNimpressed. It was literally cooked on a flat top with maybe a tsp of soy sauce? I couldn't taste it, if thats what made it brown (although it could've been oil). How could you serve 3 slabs of tofu with a touch of furikake and call it $23? It needed more flavor (like teriyaki) or it also could have been made crispy with some cornstarch and panko and turn it into tofu katsu. So much potential! I had a taste of the bulgogi and kahlua (i had hope for this spot), and they actually had flavor. The Hawaiian mac was the best part of my plate. The fried rice was fine; I added the hot sauce they provided. 5. Service - was OK at first, but he didn't ask any one of us if we wanted white rice or fried rice with our Hawaiian plates. For some reason, all three of us got the fried rice. We didn't think anything of it because maybe we misread the menu, but here comes the bill and a $2 extra charge times 3. I didn't say anything because we ate it all, but I warn you to double check the menu options. $25 each Hawaiian plate for us.

I'm not surprised to see this place closed. Years ago it was one of my favorites. At our last visit it was actually inedible, not good food at all. The service was also horrendous. We ended up leaving and walking across the street to eat elsewhere.

First time here for breakfast, and the main restaurant area was full. There was bar seating for 5, but not an actual table. So they seated us outside in the lobby next door, which was shared with the Fin Hotel. It was quiet. Service was pretty quick. Food was pretty good. We ordered the kalua pork fries (pretty good) and coconut shrimp (6 pieces) as appetizers. Coconut shrimp wasn't worth it though. You only get 6 pieces. The Island Breakfast was decent- can choose how you'd like your eggs. Spam was pretty salty. The Hawaiian plate with teriyaki was good. The mac salad was good and so was the teriyaki chicken (tender and not salty). The Loco Moco was good too. For the chicken and waffles, the chicken was good but the waffles were really sweet. Felt more like a dessert waffle rather than entreé. Parking was on the street.

Came here on a Saturday around 3:50pm- was happily surprised they still have happy hour on the weekends but it ends at 4pm! The server was nice and gave us the heads up to put in our orders asap to get the deal. We ordered the crispy dumplings, the kalua pork fries, and the switchboard burger. Everything was super tasty but the appetizers were my favorite. I think the burger was just okay- I wish there was a sauce on there that made it tastier. The dumplings and fries though were soo good! It wasn't busy at this time, the servers were really friendly, and service was quick too. I'd recommend coming during happy hour because the food is more reasonably priced.

Been here twice. Correction came here two days in a row. Brunch was amazing both visit with bottomless mimosas. I had a sandwich was was delightful. They had comfy seating and out table was right by the window for people watching. I was I rush in my first visit so I had to go back the next day. Service was in point. Love the theme of the place and right below the hotel. This will be a regular spot to visit. What's. Discovery.

A small restaurant attached to the countries smallest Hilton! Love the vibes. My husband and I sat at the bar. Service was friendly and the food was delicious. The bulgogi lettuce wraps was my fav, the flavor was super good and meat was tender.

This Fusion restaurant is easily one of the best places I've ever been to.With quaint and relaxing music, it is an overall calming experience.Additionally, you can work or play a game of theirs (I forgot name of game).The service is great with great servers who are very friendly and try to do their job at the greatest.Finally the food is so good with various options that are infused with both Korean and American Heritage!

Searched for a restaurant in Oceanside to have lunch with a friend driving from Torrance. I went by Yelp reviews and a bit nervous about picking a restaurant I never heard of without a recommendation. It didn't look like what I expected but was greeted by a sweet server who was expecting us, The menu lacked items that were on their Yelp page but it did have what I was most interested in. We started with the #BulgogLettuceWraps. It did not disappoint #KaluaPorkFries Amazing with #KimchiAioli #GarlicAioli #CrispyOnions and a perfectly #FriedEggs definitely one of the best #FrenchFriesFusion The only miss was the #HawaiianPlate We picked chicken as the protein but we did ask for it to be fried and it was a bit dry and overcooked. Good slices of breast meat though. The macaroni salad seemed on the healthier side - light on the mayo but not bad. For dessert we had #Turon aka #BananaLumpia. Having turon many times this was the BEST Very crispy because it wasn't wrapped like an egg roll and the banana filling was very delicious it didn't need a side of caramel sauce but I love caramel so nice addition. Accompanied with #AmericanoCoffee a perfect ending, It does have a coffee shop vibe with switchboard decor in honor of the women who worked at this historical site. Service was fast and our server made great recommendations and was a delight throughout our meal.

We swung by here sometime in February on our way from LA to SD. Kiddo was getting hangry and couldn't wait to get to SD to eat. Interesting spot, small and located inside a hotel. There's only a couple tables in the restaurant but they were open to seating us in the hotel lobby, which worked out better for kiddo to sit and eat. We ended up ordering Kalua Pork Fries, Hawaiian Plate with bulgogi. Everything was tasty! The bulgogi was a little salty and the fries were fried crispy well. Service was great, even for us being separate from the actual restaurant, the servers check on us often and tended to us. The bathroom in also located in the lobby. Glad we stopped here to try this random spot.

2 stars for effort. I am highly disappointed. This is definitely not the same quality of food as it was about a year ago. I already knew coming here that the previous owner and chef were gone. We ordered the loco moco and the Hawaiian plate. Both dishes were nothing special. I could probably go to a chain, fast-food Hawaiian place down the road and get the same quality of food. I had the kalua pork w/the Hawaiian plate-it was a bit salty for my taste and spicy! Not sure why they decided to do that. However, let's talk about the macaroni salad-this was not your traditional Mac salad except that it was cold. It was basically cheese Mac w/curdled cheese and no flavor. Just as a reviewer (below), said the same exact thing I was thinking-the minute I looked at the food, I could tell something was different. It was definitely the taste and quality. I agree, it is really sad that they can't or won't, keep up with the past quality and customer service of this place. Good luck, I won't be back.

Nice spot for Valentine's Day dinner! They had a dinner for two menu but we ordered a La carte. We ordered the bulgolgi lettuce wraps (delicious) to share and the salmon plate for my entree. The bourbon salmon was good, but medium rare was slightly too undercooked for my preference. Service was good even with a full house, and so was my cocktail, The Local Vibe!

The concept of the Switchboard is super cool, with the interior completely decked out with switchboard-like decorations. The service here was good and our server was super nice and gave us a rundown of the specials they had for that day. Unfortunately, I wasn't really impressed with the food. We ordered the edamame, which was $8 for a tiny portion. And I didn't really love the sauce and salt it was covered in. We also tried the Salmon Tartare, and again, I wasn't a fan. Maybe next time, I'll have to try one of the entree items, since a bunch looked good. Would definitely return for the service!

Service gains this retro gem 4 stars. Service was impeccable at the bar. Date happy hour with the wife. Started with the Soju cocktails, the Pillbox and Scattered Peaks. The Pillbox was very sweet but refreshing and delicious. Scattered Peaks was on the tart and tangy side with a hint of lime and kiwi. Great if you're not into sweet drinks. Followed drinks with the Pupu menu's Kalua Pork Fries, reminiscent of diner corned beef hash with the pork crisped on the flat top and the fried egg, they were spicy, flavorful with the sriracha aioli at the forefront. A novel departure from your typical carne asada fries in this area and well worth the detour. Next was the Seared Ahi Wonton Crisps, which didn't disappoint. They too were aioli forward and I could have used less of the sweet soy glaze, but the tuna, arugula and ginger shown through and were very tasty coupled with the wonderful crispy wonton. To finish we tried the Toast Sticks and Turin (banana lumpia). Everything was cooked well, flavored very well and delicious as a dessert. I really hoped that the Turon wasn't going to be a banana in a wonton wrapper because I was excited about the reviews, but essentially it was. Still very good, just not super unique or exciting. The Toast Sticks were essentially A piece of French toast cut into strips served with berry compote, vanilla ice cream and macadamia nuts and coconut sprinkled on top. We'll definitely be back to try some other items on the menu and hoping to find my foodie home. read more

Wow yummy!!!! We stayed at the hotel attached to this restaurant and had breakfast here- the food is amazing! I ordered the spam masubi and the fruit bowl. Was bummed the fruit was mostly melon, but the spam made up for it. Customer service is awesome. Our server Hailey, as busy as she was doing all the things- was on it. Great server! Stood on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant by the sign "wait to be seated" for at least 15 min. Immediately felt like they were short staffed, as no hostess nor server had greeted or acknowledged us. After they were done cleaning a table, they did eventually come by to show us to one of their outdoor seatings. Too bad the building side looked east, and the only view outdoors was the busy main street. We are local and bred, and it's awesome that Oceanside is starting to see a variety of cuisine. My friend and I were looking for a good place to meet for Sunday brunch and were excited to try this Hawaiian Korean fusion place with our teens. Too bad they don't serve all-day breakfast. Their menu is short so it didn't take long to decide what to try. Between the five of us, we ended up ordering x2 Switchboard Burgers, A'a & Pahoehoe (fish/chips) plate, a Shoyu poke bowl, and a combo with Korean beef bulgogi. Along with the main meal, some of our group also asked for the miso soup and kimchi pupu's (appetizers). Too bad, aside from my anticipation, I can't rave on much more about this restaurant. The food was not able to take us beyond the bland ambiance. We ate while no one mentioned the food, which does not bode well. The plates were not much to look at. The meats were over cooked. I think, honestly, for their prices I have tasted better-at home. The meal did not motivate us enough to order dessert. The kids actually googled a cafe down the street while waiting for the check. Because we were with underage persons, we could not sample any of their mixed cocktails. Maybe drinking an alcoholic beverage would have turned my review around? Not sure I would come back to find out. read more

Not that this place needs another great review, I feel the need to put in my two cents. HOLY MOLY! I am blown away by the service, decor, ambiance, and utmost the food! The Loco Moco is to die for! If you have not tried it, you have not lived. P.S. I just booked a room at The Fin (the boutique hotel attached) to take a nap and savor the moment. read more

The island style menu was a unique and pleasant change from the usual gastropubs you usually find in the area. We loved the drinks especially the pillbox and the locomoco entree was great. The indoor dining was beautiful but with very limited seating so we were sat outside on PCH. The ambiance could be better our there but I understand it's hard on a busy highway. We loved the mussels and lettuce wraps on the appetizer menu but felt they were overpriced for the serving sizes. read more

What a hidden gem!! I had no idea that the hotel had been completely renovated. They did a great job with this historic building, keeping the bones but modernized and awesome. NOW, as to the switchboard, it's a foodie's paradise. FINALLY there's another restaurant to compete with LTH. The staff was amazing. I can see why they were able to make it through the pandemic... opening during 2020. I'll be back very soon! Can't wait for live music events. read more

Took my family out for a day at the beach. We had eaten here over this last summer and decided to come back. We enjoy the environment and most of all, the food. Absolutely tasty! My 9 year old says "It's the best burger I have ever eaten!" Although his papa smokes some great pork at home! Lots of food, you can absolutely share your l plate. My son actually had to go in and personally thank the chef. We truly enjoy this restaurant and the treatment. Thank you. read more

We've been coming here since right after they opened, and everything has always been spot on. The food is great, and everyone there has been friendly and welcoming. So far we've had a little bit of everything off the menu and it's all been amazing. The spicy tagarashi fries are some of my favorite as it has a bit of a different flavor spice than what I'm used to. read more

We love this place! Hawaiian/Asian fusion! Very small restaurant with intimate ambiance. Try all the small plates but for the BEST roast duck ala orange don't hesitate to order! My boyfriend never liked Brussels sprouts and when we come here he can't get enough. The cocktails are awesome and great local brew beers on tap and a good Happy Hour. You will be pleasantly surprised! read more

Came here a couple weeks ago to celebrate a birthday and it was amazing! Super cute inside area. It is connected to a hotel and fun fact this place use to be a building used back in WWII where they would use it for military purposes and had actual switchboards used during the war. Hence the name. They actually still have an original switchboard in the hotel next door. Their menu has a fun take on Hawaiian fusion. They do a great job with adding flair and deliciousness to some traditional Hawaiian dishes we all know. Not to menu they have an excellent cocktail menu. I'm allergic to pineapple so I was excited to see their signature Mai Tai without pineapple (hard to find). They also had several old fashions to choose from which was very impressive. I went with the burger which was massive along with a side salad with homemade dressing. It was on point. one of use got the shrimp which look plentiful and delicious. Another got the fish and chips which had tons of taste especially for a fish and chip entrée. Lastly one of us got the Hawaiian plate with pulled pork and vegan fried rice. That was the best out of all the entrees we had at our table. We also started off with the pulled pork fries omg those were to die for. I could of had that all to myself. read more

Connected to a small Hilton hotel. Public parking a block away and plenty of street parking choices. Service is efficient and friendly. There are over 15 tables outside. Keep in mind that it is located on a busy street of cars and pedestrians. Banana lumpia: good flavor. I just wish the wrapper they use wasn't so thick. Lobster guacamole: my favorite! I like the freshness of the guacamole and how well the lime cuts through all the flavors. Miso mussels: an unexpected yummy combination! Pan-seared halibut: I do not recommend this dish. My halibut was overcooked and dry. The buerre Blanc came in handy because I drenched that piece of fish with it to help me eat it. However, the roasted root veggies that came with the dish were perfectly cooked. Not too raw and not too flimsy. read more

Thanks Wyatt for the great service, recommendations and friendly vibe! We shared appetizers. The tuna was perfectly cooked and served with gorgeous presentation. The French fries put all other fries to shame. These elevated the term completely to an appetizer that stands alone on its own and not just the plate filler it usually is. Superb! The Brussel Sprouts!!!!!! How can they be that good?! Unbelievable. Best I have ever had. (I have had lots!). No need to hide under bacon or blue cheese. These were cooked and seasoned to perfection. Hats off to the chef. WOW Can't wait to go back and try more things on menu.. read more

Warm. Friendly. Delicious. Balanced. This is going to sound silly, but that salad was life-changing. It was the perfect. Balance of texture and taste. And the rest of the meal followed suit! We got the salmon and the halibut. SO GOOD. Cooked perfectly. I had coconut polenta with mine, which was creamy, dangerously decadent, and unforgettable. I keep coming back to the word "balanced" - everything tasted right together. Come here and eat the food. You won't be disappointed. Plus, the owner (firefighter by trade! ) was very welcoming. Great vibe at this place. I got the Hulihuli Chicken plate and the Korean Loco Moco. Good sized portions for only $10 and $13 plates. The gravy on the loco moco has a little bit of spice, so delicious. The Hulihuli Chicken plate is easily the best $10 plate lunch in North County. They garnish all their plates with love and aloha. My fiancé and I stayed in Oceanside for a staycation. We wanted to explore some of the new restaurants and bars that have arrived in Oceanside. We met some friends at Switchboard. I was blown away by the food and drinks. I love tiki style drinks and couldn't stop ordering the Pillbox. Yum. We also shared taro chips and the vegan cheese dip. You wouldn't even guess it was vegan. So creamy and flavorful! For dinner, I had bulgogi beef with fried rice, along with brussel sprouts to share with the table. To finish the meal off, we shared turon, one of my fav desserts! We can't wait to come back! Also the history of this building is awesome! read more

This meal made me feel like I was wearing aloha shirts and wearing flip flops on the sand in Hawaii. The Pan Seared Halibut was supremely delicious -- one of the best fish entrees I've had in the mainland United States. The Ahi poke was classically done and executed. The spicy salmon poke was excellent. The taro chips were delicious and went well with the poke. The banana lumpia has good flavor and crisp with every bite. My girlfriend got the portobello mushroom and it was the best tasting mushroom dish we had ever had. The rest of my family was extremely satisfied and happy with their food. 10/10 recommend this place. Service was friendly, wore masks, and were careful to ensure a safe-dining experience. What a gem! Everything about this quaint eatery is perfect: the food, the staff, the location, and the prices. We ate lunch and breakfast, as we stayed at the equally charming Fin Hotel, where the Switchboard is housed. I can't say enough about the quality and freshness of the food. The menu has Korean and Hawaiian inspirations, but everything looked and sounded very accessible and tasty for a range of pallettes. We got the spicy chicken sandwich and the fish & chips, both of which were delights, with taste and freshness to spare! But the star of both platters were the french fries, battered and fried to perfection! Don't miss these by picking another side! They were amazing! For breakfast we got the Mexican chorizo bowl and the french toast, which we shared and enjoyed very much. The orange juice was fresh squeezed with a beautiful orchid garnish, which all.of our plates came with. It completed the Hawaiian feel for the menu and presentation. What a pleasant surprise with this new amazing restaurant. Nestled with a small boutique hotel this restaurant packs a punch! The Switchboard is honestly one of the best restaurants I've been to in the last couple of months. It's a small dining room- by small, I mean only a couple tables and bar seating, and it attaches to the lobby of a Hilton and a small coffee shop on either side of it. They have a couple of patio tables, but it was a little too loud for me since it is on a main street. There is parking along the main street or down the side streets near the restaurant. My group was seated in the lobby instead of the main room, which was fine, but it may have contributed to the slow service, as it took a while for our server to check on us. The drinks were all really tasty, and when the food finally came out, it was all beautifully plated. The stand out meal definitely goes to the Korean Loco Moco- spicy and sweet, every bite was delicious. For those who are not a big fan of eggs, this restaurant offers a great vegan fried rice. I would definitely make the 1hr+ drive to eat here again! read more

The Greek omelet was not my personal favorite (and I didn't order it) but it came as delivered, with spinach, onions, feta cheese, and more. We tried this one with a potato pancake. The pancake is not a traditional one but it still had a lot of flavor. Personally, I preferred the homestyle potatoes. If it is appropriate for your meal, ask for the fresh salsas. They are fantastic. The hype is real. This is very good food and someone gave some real thought to these dishes. Maybe come at a slightly off dining hour to avoid or lessen the wait.

This craft wine tasting room is amazing. It has ample (heated) space in the back to bring in your…read moreown food and friends for wine pairings, and the wine varietals are second to none. (You can also grab charcuterie items from their fridge.) For your non-wine friends they have slushies. The tasting room is licensed for children as well. I believe they have sodas in the fridge you can purchase for the youngsters. The best thing about this place is that every Sunday there's a music open mic featuring local singers and artists from 6-9. The host, local legend Raynaldo Martine, will play along with artists or let them go solo. The list is always fair, and the hosts respect the amount of time artists spend in the venue. Overall, this is a place where you can enjoy some high-end craft wine and excellent entertainment. They have other entertainment lined up other days, so call ahead to find out what's going on.

The selection was pretty good. They had a lot of good California beer but also stuff from the Pacific Northwest and imports too. The guy at the register was beyond helpful and friendly. I sampled some Russian River beer they had on tap. I didn't take an extensive look at the tap list, but at a glance I could tell it's worth a visit for the beer. I'm happy with the beer I took home, and would stop by again for food if I get the chance.

This was such a great find in Oceanside, walking distance from the center of all the action. In the bottom of the Finn hotel but with its own entrance off the sidewalk, this quaint and historical venue also has amazing food options. The original building served as the telecommunications switchboard for Camp Pendleton and has been refurbished while keeping design features from the switchboard days. Furnished like a living room lounge with an almost art deco feel small bar with brass lamps and matching cocktail shakers, you can comfortably eat Hawaiian and Korean flaired fare. The spam musubi, poké wontons, and chicken sandwich (get it fried) were so delicious. They make their own hot sauce in house as well! The only bummer was we didn't have room for the Loco Moco (getting it next time). Our server Amy had the presence of an owner, someone who genuinely cares about your experience which is so rare these days. An added bonus is their coffee shop next door where they roast and grind their own beans and made the smoothest iced latté you could ask for. We can't wait to go back! read more

Came for dinner with some friends and they only have 2 tables that can sit more then 4 people at a time. So we were told even tho we had been waiting for some time, if the people sitting didn't leave in time kitchen would close an hour before closing time and we would only be able to order drinks. Food was good and drinks were good. I would just make sure, if you plan on eating her You get here like 3-4 hours before closing to make sure you can get seating much before closing time so you aren't waiting to just get told you may only be able to order drinks. read more

Shekinah was the best hostess I have come across in Oceanside! The owners are very lucky, I would hire her immediately. With a completely full restaurant right at open, she managed to deliver a fantastic service. Quick, friendly, accurate... what's better than that? Give her a raise! The atmosphere is gastropubby but very fun and hip (great place to work). The food is great, portions are a little big but they seem to be getting more realistic. Very close to the beach, I enjoy grabbing a bite and a coffee to go for the strand!! read more

The food was absolutely delicious! However, the service and venue were a bad experience. The outside tables are wobbly, and the cutlery doesn't match the plate sizes. It felt like I couldn't focus on my food or conversation because I was playing wack-a-mole. The waitress spilled a drink on our table and didn't bother to come clean it until I asked for a rag. read more
