The Taco Stand serves incredible tacos just up the street from the beach, and that perfectly captures what makes SoCal such an amazing place to live. We tried almost every taco and the standouts were the Baja and Sonora. The fish in the Baja was perfectly fried. It tasted so fresh and airy. The steak in the Sonora was fatty deliciousness and the melted cheese brought things to another level. We waited in line for 30 min and close to another 10 min for our food to come out. The long wait made our expectations even higher than they already were, but the food still managed to impress us. I highly recommend The Taco Stand! Can't wait to come back!
I saw a long line at this restaurant 2 years ago and figured it was worth a try. I visited The Taco Stand recently and was honestly a little underwhelmed. The restaurant was small but very lively. There is limited seating inside and out. You can see the whole staff hustling and bustling. They have a soda dispenser and self serve condiment bar in the back. It gets congested quick back there. The decor is fun and colorful. Overall, the inside is small but inviting. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito, 2 tacos de carne asada, one Al pastor taco, and a taco de nopales. The tortillas are hand made. That's always a plus. The nopales taco was cold. I was hoping that it would have been grilled because grilled nopales are fire. The nopales happened to be my least favorite item that I tried. The Al pastor lacked flavor. I also thought it needed to be cooked a little longer. It wasn't under cooked but needed more time. It came with sliced pineapples but it was barely drained and the juices made the taco very wet and sweet. The al pastor taco and nopales taco was served with their cilantro lime dressing which was flavorful. The bean and cheese burrito was good and hearty. It paired well with their chipotle sauce. The carne asada tacos were the best. The carne asada was rich in flavor and the meat was cut into good sized pieces. Served with a good helping of guac and cilantro and onions. A little messy but it was a hit. The churros are good. Good size and seasoning and not overly oily. Overall, I would revisit The Taco Stand. The tacos I would order them basic as possible. Just meat and cilantro onion toppings while adding the sauce myself. If the tacos weren't messy I'd give it a higher rating. One thing that caught my eye were the asada fries. Those looked good.
As my first visit to SD in a long, long time, I felt it was necessary to visit one of the most iconic stops in the city! We have The Taco Stand in Las Vegas, but there is truly something special about getting delicious tacos by the water. The wait could get very tedious. The line wraps around the building into the parking lot with cars pulling in & out. You also wait a bit for your food. Compared to the location here in Vegas where I could be in and out in 5 minutes, spending nearly an hour standing around is less than ideal on a trip :/ But....... the food is unfortunately very very delicious. AND THE CHURROS! so yummy and sweet. My favorite is the Baja Taco. An absolute gem.
I'll start out by saying the line is always long at this place... but I can confirm.. that it is SO worth the wait. Once you order your food you don't wait more than 10-12 minutes, even with how packed it is. Workers are friendly, seating area available inside and out, and the food it to die for. The pastor tacos were the winner for me and my boyfriend, with the carne asada being a CLOSE second. The juiciness and sauce on the pastor was crazy. The guac on the asada was also so delicious. All in all, PLEASE TRY IT!!
Decided to try the taco stand on a Saturday morning after a walk in downtown La Jolla. The spot can be a little walk from the downtown. The spot was busy in the morning so recommended getting there early. The service was speedy. My burrito was good though it could use a little more flavor. The salsa bar had plenty of salsa options depending on the spice palate. The prices are good for the portions. Overall a good experience!
Tasty tasty tacos that took about an hour to get. Self serve salsa and toppings bar which is awesome, the different sauces all added something yummy. Had the fish and beef taco which were so much better than a few other places during my trip. My complaint mostly is the wait. I get it, we came on a Saturday but the line barely budged, although when you're inside you can see they're producing tacos and packing them really quickly so what it looks like is they're doing a lot of mobile orders in between standing customers which to me isn't great. Maybe turn off mobile ordering on busy days and treat the people waiting in line first?
the taco stand: they have a few locations down in oc and sd, but we went to the la jolla one. i rlly liked the tortillas and they pack her up!! it is like $4 for a taco but def worth it. meats were juicy and tender + they have a sauce bar in the back w unlimited sauce, pickled onions, and pico de gallo. i def wanna come back for their cali burrito bc ive seen so many videos abt it. warning tho, seating is limited inside and no bathrooms. service was efficient but come early bc lines can get long.
Went on a Sunday around dinner time and this place was POPPING. We ordered online for pickup and still had to wait about 15 minutes when we got there, but honestly good thing we did because the line to order was literally out the door and down the block. The workers were BUSY. Not a ton of seating inside, but we just took our food to the beach and had a mini picnic, which made it way better anyway. They also have a self-serve sauce bar, which I always appreciate. We got carne asada tacos, al pastor tacos, and carne asada fries. The carne asada was solid. Good flavor, decent sized pieces, not dry or chewy, actually pretty tender. The al pastor was kinda underwhelming though. A little dry and just didn't hit the same (flavor-wise). Also not a huge fan of raw onions and they cut them pretty big, so it was a bit overpowering. The fries were really good texture wise, and the steak was just as good as the tacos. Only thing is the nacho sauce on top was a bit much for me. Made everything kinda soggy toward the end. One thing I will say, they are VERY generous with the guac, and it actually tasted really good too. But I still can't get over the price... ~$5 per taco is kinda crazy. I get that they load them up, but still.
3.5 The small restaurant had a long line that moved quickly. Even the wait for the food after ordering was not long. I had the mushroom/vegan taco. The tortilla was great. The mushrooms were sautéed with garlic and were flavorful. What was missing was the spices and freshness of a sea side taco stand. There was a bit of cilantro and a dollop of avocado - but no salsa nor chili powder. I didn't mind the messiness of the presentation. Overall a solid taco choice.
This was a taco stand alright because we spent most of our time standing and waiting. That being said, the food tasted so good that it was almost worth it. The parking lot is pretty tiny--especially considering how it's shared by several restaurants. We must have come at the right time though because one spot actually opened up right when we got there! The line never let up the entire time I was there even though it was already well past lunch time on a weekday when we arrived. I think we waited for about an hour before even taking our order. There was plenty of seating both inside and out, but there were just so many people that not everyone had a seat. Not only that, but many of the people who were sitting were still waiting for their food. After ordering, I think we waited another 30 minutes for the food to be done too. Luckily, some people left and we were able to take their seats before the food was done. The entire menu looked really interesting and yummy, so it was hard to make a decision. There was a small fridge by the doorway that was full of alcohol and soda in glass bottles. They even had churros being fried right next to the register! I ended up going with three soft tacos--baja, carne asada, and al pastor. Each taco was loaded with plenty of things already, but there was also a sizeable sauce/salsa/topping bar in the back to get even more! The tacos were all a pretty good size. They were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The fish in the baja taco was especially delicious. The fish was fried to perfection It's too bad that this place is so far away from where I live. If I lived nearby, then I would try to find the slow hours and then go all the time!
This is hands-down the best tacos ever. They make their corn tortillas fresh in-house, the meats are deliciously grilled, and their unlimited salsa bar is filled with delicious pico de gallo, salsas, limes and pickled onions. Although it does take some time when it's busy to get your food, it is so so worth it. There is plenty of street parking a few blocks down by the neighborhoods. The service is fast and the atmosphere bustling. Only bad thing I can say is there is not bathroom. The tacos are the best I've ever had in the States though, so full of fillings and fresh! The steak and shrimp fries are also delicious and the burritos are highly recommended as well.
Ok, so... the wait on a Saturday is long. It doesn't get shorter in the afternoon or weird hours between lunch and dinner. Long. There's another wait for salsas and soda. Then, there's the wait for food. It's also long. Seating is sparse. Vegetarian review: mushroom taco was ok. Filled to the brim though, with mushrooms and topped with a fair amount of avocado. It just wasn't very flavorful. Chips and guac: chips were good. Guac was ok. Churros: these were good. You get 3 of them along with some condensed milk. Crispy outside, chewy inside, lots of cinnamon and sugar. Salsas were pretty good. Parking was not too bad.

Came to San Diego for the day and wanted to try this spot I saw online. The line was about 30 minutes but the food is worth it. We ordered the California burrito and the Sonora taco; both were excellent. Parking is limited to street parking but they take cash or card. Seating is limited inside and outside; might be best to take it to go. We will definitely be back. read more
The best tacos I've had outside of Mexico. So affordable and quick service lines.. How a tiny place can hold so much flavor and fire, is evident from the slow roast asada twirling slowly round the grill. Their shrimp tacos and Al Pastor tacos have me converted !! They serve hot churros, fresh icecream, Mexican coke and horchata, street corn and fries and all kinds of burritos. Did I mention an unlimited sauce stand? - load up on that cilantro crema and chipotle sauce y'all! Pro tip is to eat the Baja fish tacos straight out the door and not to take out and risk the crisp batter fried crust from getting soggy. read more

The line out the door was definitely a perfect indicator that these tacos are legit! I had the pollo and Baja. Both were delicious. Definitely the best fish taco I have had in a long time! There is limited seating but we were able to find a spot to enjoy our tacos outside. read more

Expect a very very long wait! Parking can be a bit difficult to find too, but hopefully you're lucky enough to find one around the area. We ordered a few bunch of tacos, but I mainly got try the fried fish taco and that was pretty good! It was nicely fried and the piece of fish was pretty big too. I wish it had more ingredients in there? It felt like it was missing something to elevate the taco since it was just the lettuce and fish. We also shared an order of carne asada fries and the carne asada meat was really tender and juicy! Definitely great quality of meat and wish I could have tried a carne asada taco as well. The fries were really great too, although, it also felt like it was missing something too... I wish there were originally more toppings on it. This shop is really small and does not have a public restroom. Although, since this is a pretty easy meal, its easier for people to come and leave quicker to dine in here. It's been a long time since I've had tacos in San Diego and this place serves up some solid ones at decent pricing (under $5 a taco) in today's economy. I love that they also have churros on the menu which makes up a great dessert after! read more

We were visiting the area and this place came up as a must try places to eat so we went. We got there an hour before closing and the line was still long. We hesitated to get in line because it looked like a long wait but we went for it. Got in line and was at the cashier ordering in 20 minutes and got our food after 15 minutes which was not at all bad. We ordered the Mar y Tierres Fries, Baja Tacos and the Grilled Pescado Tacos. Mar Y Tierres Fries - fries were hot and crispy even if it was loaded with cheese, lots of cubed steak. Shrimp was plump and had a kick to it and whole avocados for the guacamole. It was so good! Baja - crispy fried battered fish with pico de gallo and slaw. Crunchy and tasty fish Grilled Pescado - light and flavorful fresh fish with pico de gallo and slaw Overall food and service is great. Place is small with extra tables outside. It gets super crowded and loud. Reasonably priced authentic Mexican taste. read more
The Sonora Taco at The Taco Stand is something to behold. I was so impressed with the flavor, style, and portion. The service was super fast when you consider how slammed this joint was ten minutes before it closed. If you are visiting La Jolla you're in for a treat. The whole place is just a landmark in my mind and I look forward to my next visit. The place was popping off but there was a friendly vibe among all of the customers and the atmosphere felt like it was an indoor food festival or something. There were little kids with parents, teens and college students, and there were older folks there too, all just gobbling up this yummy food at the small dining area inside or on the standing tables outside. 10/10. read more

Came here on a Thursday evening at around 5:30, and there was a steady flow of people ordering. I got two carne asada tacos, two al pastor tacos, an order of churros and a horchata to go. I probably waited like 15 minutes for my food. There's a salsa bar in the corner. I tried the cilantro avocado and the salsa verde. There's indoor and outdoor seating but it was kind of cold and a bit crowded, so I decided to take my food back home. The tacos were good, a little dry so the salsas are a must. The churros were nice a chewy and came with a caramel like sauce. The horchata was great as well with a nice cinnamon flavor. Food came out to $23 including tip. Being a lover of tacos, I had to try them when in CA. Found this place. It was near my hotel and had great reviews. It's a small place with a few tables and a window bar. I tried the Carne Asada, Camaron, and the Grillled Pescado. They came on a single corn tortilla with fillings such as sliced cabbage, tomatoes, onions and avocado and a creamy chipotle sauce. They are on the smaller side, so I can see myself ordering several if very hungry. I managed to grab one of the very few tables inside to eat. The tacos were a bit messy to eat. The sauce and liquids from the ingredients caused the tortilla to rip. I could've used a fork to eat all the fillings that fell out. There was a good protein to tortilla ratio. I liked the sliced cabbage and onions that added a bit of crunch and vegetables to each bite. It was busy with many people coming through to order. Service comprised of basic order your food, get a number, and wait till they call it out. No frills. Tacos were tasty, and I'd probably come back to try some of their other offerings if in the area again. read more

AMAZING tacos y burritos. I realize this is a "chain" since they have multiple locations around the country but they operate like a hole in the wall mom and pop shop. The food is absolutely terrific and the workers are frankly just working really hard to serve the huge influx of people they get on the reg. The mar y Tierra burrito was probably my favorite but the tacos and loaded fries were also absolutely phenomenal. All the food and sauces we had here were so delicious. And honestly the price might've been my favorite part, everything was priced so reasonably and you get a ton of a food for a small amount of money. It truly was one of my favorite burrito joints I've ever been to. "Chain" or not this place is a must try. It's not fancy or anything but the food is more than an enough to always have a line out the door and to keep people coming back for more! read more
After spend a nice evening at La Jolla beach last weekend, we wanted to get some some tacos nearby.... so here we were! We stopped by the Taco Stand around 5pm on a Saturday. The line didn't seem too long, but it took a while for the line to move. It was my first time here, so I wanted to try a good variety. Here is what I ordered: 1. Al Pastor Taco - this was surprisingly one of the best al pastor tacos i've ever had! They put a TON of pineapple in it, so each bite was so flavorful. If pineapple on pizza is your jam, you might like this lol. You get the richness from the meat, but that sweet tang from the pineapple. Loved it. 2. Camaron (spicy shrimp) Taco - Unique since you don't usually see shrimp tacos around. However, I wouldn't really crave this taco and come back for this. It was good, but I could easily pass on it! Also, wasn't really that spicy... haha. 3. Baja Taco - this was so good! The batter on the fish was perfect. Crispy and fish was soft inside. Notes: + A huge variety of sauces, toppings. They have a little bar, so grab whatever you want/need. - Service is slow. We probably waited in line + waited for the food for an hour before getting to eat. - Not much seating. I would recommend one person getting in line and the other one looks for a spot to sit right away to secure a spot. + Food came out really warm and fresh. All in all, good taco spot, but be prepared to wait. ORDER THE AL PASTOR AND BAJA. You won't regret ;) read more

Delicious tacos! We had the shrimp, baja and grilled fish. I would come back for the baja and grilled fish! The tacos may vary with toppings- pico, avocado, cole slaw, etc. It's between $3.49-3.94 for a taco, depending on what you get. They ran out of churros when we were there :( but the menu shows you'd get 3 in an order for $3.50. Love that they have a sauce line. We came on a Friday night and there was a line outside. It took about 15-20 min until we got to order. After ordering, we stood in the sauce line for about 5-7 min and waited another 10-15 min for our food. I would say it was pretty quick since it was a Friday night! There's some seating inside and more seating outside. It's next to a pizza place too in case you don't want tacos. Update: We had to come back for pescado burritos and churros! Best decision ever. The fish for the burrito is grilled. The churros were soft and comes with a sauce, I believe it's condensed milk. Got takeout from the Taco Stand as one of my last meals in San Diego, and it didn't disappoint! The quality was phenomenal for the price, and a California burrito, chips and guac, three tacos, a quesadilla, and two orders of churros cost less than $50 before tip! You can't beat those prices. The line was long, upwards of 45 minutes on a Saturday night, but that's just a testament to this place's popularity. The California burrito I ordered was delicious: chewy, juicy steak and crispy fries. I think they forgot the sour cream, but it was still a great burrito. I'd recommend pairing this with their avocado salsa, which adds a nice spicy zing that cuts through the saltiness of the burrito. The guac was simple (seasoned with salt) but good, and the churros were perfection: coated in cinnamon, crispy exterior, and soft interior. The side of condensed milk just elevated their decadence. If you want some delicious Mexican food that doesn't break the bank, pull up the Taco Stand next time you're in La Jolla! read more

San Diego does Carne Asada Fries best, and The Taco Stand has made itself the King of Kinds. These fries are to be consumed no more than 1-2 times annually. Located in La Jolla this shack makes it a must whether you're coming in or leaving San Diego. Pro tip: order ahead Lines are long, and the wait time for your order to be up may be longer. While it seems to always be busy, a table makes itself available when you're ready to eat. The place is tiny with the salsa bar inconveniently located deep in the shack and the flow is hardly easy. I have no suggestions as to how it can be better located, but I am indeed grateful that this isn't one of those establishments that over charge for salsa and condiments, so I suppose it's perfectly placed it's exactly where it needs to be. Tortillas are fresh and the tacos are all around solid. Four stars because I know this place has much more potential, and there are little things that feel out of place such as the staff's open container soft drinks hanging on the food work stations. read more

I wish I knew this place existed sooner! Mar Y Tierra fries is a must order as a asada fries lover! The fries are so crispy on the outside and soft inside which gives the perfect fry texture!! The fries are absolutely the shining star of this dish but the well seasoned shrimp also pairs well with the fries! Notice how I can't finish a sentence without an exclamation mark?? That's how deliciously mind blowing it was!! If only this existed in LA! Tacos were good too and well decorated with toppings. Definitely on my top list of tacos. read more

Solid taco/burrito place in La Jolla that serves good portions for a decent price. I ordered the California burrito which has steak, cheese, fries, gauc, tomatoes, and sour cream and was extremely filling plus it tasted really good. For a 3pm on a Saturday the line was a little long, but the food didn't take too fast to come out. Seating was harder to find but you could always walk down to the beach and eat your food there. As for parking, much easier to find street parking than park in the tiny lot in front. Would definitely come back again. read more

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the California burrito. Not only was it very good but it was also MASSIVE! Usually I have a big appetite but I couldn't finish's this one. Would really recommend atmosphere was great over great place. The reason this is a 4 is because it was busy and the service was slow. read more

I must reiterate that this is probably one of the greatest places to get burritos - even though ironically this place is named The Taco Stand, I would prefer to go to Tacos El Gordo for good tacos. That being said, I first discovered this place on Convoy (Kearny Mesa) and was glad to discover that they have another location here in La Jolla. This one is definitely older than the Kearny Mesa location, because I recall this location being here but not the one on Convoy. The menu is exactly the same and the quality is exactly the same as the other locations and I'm really glad to say the burritos are top notch, especially for the price. I've tried everything on the menu now, so if you needed to pick one thing, I highly recommend the mar y tierra burrito. Don't get anything else, but if you want fries, get the mar y tierra fries. The fries are a healthy serving and will fill you and a friend up on just those alone, so prepare to be very full if you share a thing of fries and each get a burrito, but it is so worth it. The burritos are amazing and you're just a few blocks from the beach where you should definitely go to enjoy your food. If you want to eat in, there's indoor and outdoor seating although it's usually pretty crowded, and there's street parking on side streets that I've never had trouble finding. read more

NO. Fries have wheat in the ingredients and are in a shared fryer. They are very accommodating for other items and happy to answer any questions. Great spot.

Where do you park?
There is a very small parking lot shared by other restaurants and shops. You're better off finding parking on the street. We parked around the corner in a neighborhood.

They do take out, but keep in mind that they don't do phone/online orders on weekends because of how crowded it gets.

I have been there once when visiting San Diego, the family and I got there around 6pm and sat down to eat around 7:15pm. A long wait, yes! But damn was it worth the wait. We cannot wait to stand in line for a long time to eat there again! 😉
Is it safe to eat here for someone with a peanut allergy?
Be sure to let them know beforehand, but I believe you should be ok. I’m almost positive nothing in the menu contains nuts.
