I don't know if I came on an off day or they fell off but my recent experience was very mid. The California burrito was overly salty and kinda sour, and I think there was cheese in the tortilla which was not what I expected or wanted. I was told that The Taco Stand is a MUST while in SD, so off we went! But holy moly this location is busy. We placed our order for 12 tacos (before you judge, this was for 4 people!!), & the wait time was quoted to be 20 mins. We waited closer to 35 to receive our order. There was a bit of a mixup at the register where our order had 4 tacos more than we ordered, but thankfully we caught it in time to have it refunded. I looved all of the salsas provided here - the verde and habanero were my two faves. I also really liked the flavor of the salsa macha, but didn't dare to eat more. I ordered 1 carne asada and 2 al pastor tacos. The flavors of both were good, but the al pastor was a bit lean. I wish it had a bit more fat for flavor. The only thing I'll also note is - the tacos are a bit inconsistent. We had a friend who ordered 4 al pastor tacos with no cilantro, and she received 2 tacos with cilantro sauce but no pineapple, and 2 tacos with pineapple but no sauce. Everything is freshly made to order -- homemade tortillas are the tell-tale sign of a solid, authentic taco place. Service is fast too! We got the Al Pastor, Camarom and Baja. The flavors for the Al pastor was pretty solid though I wish there was more meat in the tacos (it was close to $4 per taco). The flavor for the camarom was already great, shrimp wasn't over cooked. Baja was also solid, a pretty standard fish taco. This location is pretty small, there's just a small aisle with bench tables on each side and really tight. We ordered when there wasn't a line and still waited a bit for our food. But it was cool to see them make their own tortilla from scratch. Parking is also a little hard at this location, we were able to find one within a few minutes but it could get hard at peak dinner time because there are a lot of other food restaurants in this area/plaza. This was not a good look... Then, I was extremely disappointed to see that my tacos were thrown together haphazardly with all of the guacamole on one side of the taco. Plus, the chicken was burned... I was astonished at how badly this location represented The Taco Stand name. The coup de gras was when I asked one of the employees named Jasmin a question, and she was very rude & dismissive. Everything was okay, not super oily nor overly seasoned which I appreciated, but nothing was outstanding. Got a tip from a friend from San Diego who said this place has the best California burritos in town. Let me tell you, he wasn't lying. This place really differentiates itself with its sauce bar that offers pickled jalapeños, pickled onions, salsa, avocado salsa, and more. The salsa are always stocked, and the Northpark location is also very very solid and a little more quiet. The tortillas are fresh and they are quick to serve the orders. It definitely lived up to the hype. California burrito, 9.5/10: really good quality meat. They use big chunks of tender steak that is seasoned very well. This burrito has a cheese skirt melted into the tortillas to give it and a little bit of a texture difference. WOW. The cilantro crema and pickled onions pairs super well. It was a very generous portion. Very affordable. The fries weren't too mushy they actually had some crunch and crisp to them. The guacamole tasted fresh and wasn't overpowering. Pastor tacos, 9/10: very flavorful pastor. Seasoned very well like the Asada and had a nice smoky char to it. The bit of pineapple they put on top was a very pleasant sweetness for these tacos. This is a fairly newer location in Convoy, as it was already busy noon on a Sunday, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets busy other days. Accommodate enough time to wait. It's an intimate space inside for seating, so it's also recommended to order to go. You can already smell the food being made in the kitchen as soon as you step inside. They also have breakfast burritos as well as fresh churros despite it not being listed on the official restaurant menu. The workers look like they barely want to be there. Both times we visited (both within 2 days) the service was like a fast food chain level of service. Minimal effort and attitude to get the job done. No warm greeting or friendly service. Parking lot is pretty small and not to mention it is paid parking via QR code. The spaces are tight too so don't be that person who parks over the lines. California burrito- probably one of the best ca burritos I've ever had. Each bite was meaty and saucy with lots of various textures. The steak was tender and the tortilla was so soft and delicate. No note for this one. Churros - These were made fresh and we had to go up to ask for the order when we were ready for them. The churros were warm, crispy and very comforting. The cinnamon sugar ratio was perfect. Chorizo and egg breakfast burrito- not listed on the menu but this is a solid breakfast option. The cheese was melty and added a nice savory bite. The meat was pretty egg forward with small bits of chorizo chopped in. The chipotle sauce ties this in so well with a creamy flavor profile. The only thing that could make this better is pico de gallo and guacamole. Final thoughts: workers are pretty relaxed and not super professional so I wouldn't expect amazing service. The open kitchen allows you to watch your food be cooked right in front of you...but sometimes it's better not to look. The workers aren't the cleanest with their food hygiene so I just hope my stomach is strong enough these next 6-8 hours of digestion. I saw the cashier pick up the phone, input an order into the system, and directly handle the cooked meat all with the same black nitrile gloves. The flour tortillas were very thin and so amazingly good... the best I've ever had! They have a salsa bar and the hot sauce is good and spicy. The churros are not frozen, they are made fresh too. Me and my wife displayed our big back behavior as we ordered a bean and cheese burrito, a chicken burrito and about 8 tacos will various meats. The Taco Stand DID NOT skip a beat, you hear me?! Everything was on point and it took everything in me not to order a few more tacos. The tortillas almost melt in your mouth with how soft they are (something I'm not used to) and the meat is grilled to perfection. This location is fairly small, so when you walk in, just off to your left is the register and directly behind is the kitchen where you can see employees working their magic to make your food. Straight ahead and off to the right is pretty narrow as there is seating on both sides. So if you're sitting down and it's a crowded weekend night, you may find customers rubbing against your back due to how narrow this section is.
