The flavor was great, but they were a bit on the greasy side for my liking. For brunch, I ordered the tiramisu pancakes and WOW .....absolutely AMAZING. Fluffy, rich, and perfectly sweet with that classic tiramisu flavor. We had the Tuscan campanelle alla bolognese. It was comforting, well-seasoned, and absolutely delicious. We also tried the lunch plate with chicken skewers, asparagus, and potatoes. Everything tasted fresh, cooked perfectly, and well-balanced. We were really looking forward to this meal, but unfortunately it missed the mark across almost every course. The arancini were overwhelmingly salty with no other discernible flavor... so much so that we couldn't even finish one. It felt like all the seasoning for the evening went into that appetizer, because everything that followed was drastically underseasoned. The salmon was cooked well, but the rice pilaf tasted like absolutely nothing. No salt, no herbs, no butter... the cucumbers mixed in were somehow the most flavorful component on the plate. The Caesar salad was creamy but lacked any brightness or zing. It needed acidity and depth. The steak was the biggest disappointment of the night. It was not cooked to the requested temperature and arrived cold throughout. It was underseasoned and honestly one of the worst steaks I've had in years. (Also the presence of chili oil on the plate was puzzling, and the oil itself was bland and bitter.) Dessert didn't redeem the experience. The cheesecake had a strange gelatinous, overly firm texture and very little flavor. The strawberry sauce was watery and bland, like it was infused with strawberry essence rather than made from real fruit (which was especially confusing because the fresh strawberry slices on the plate were clearly in season and delicious). The seating also detracted from the experience. We were placed at an extremely high, very small bar table with wobbly chairs that were difficult to get in and out of. It felt more awkward than romantic... like sitting in oversized high chairs. Service was disjointed. Staff repeatedly walked past our table with our food, seemingly unsure where it belonged, going back and forth until confirming with our waiter. Got there at 12:20 pm. Had a reservation but soon realized we didn't need one. There were 3 tables occupied in the entire restaurant. We waited 5 minutes before a server approached us. She was very friendly and offered us drinks. 10 minutes later, she came back and took our order for appetizer as we looked over the menu. About 10 minutes later, she comes back to get our food order. Now we are 30 minutes in. We ordered the pull apart mozzarella, which was very very good. We ordered a chicken Caesar salad and the brisket lasagna. Note on my photo there is no chicken because someone forgot to put it on there. I wanted to come solely for the chicken Cesar salad because I saw a picture on their website and it looked delicious. I was very disappointed because the salad dressing had no flavor and the salad was dry (not enough dressing) and the lettuce was brown! All of this for $15! The brisket lasagna was the worst. The brisket was so dry, it was hard chunks. The ricotta was not spread evenly, and the lasagna was drowning in a flavorless sauce. Well to be fair all it tasted like was tomato. This whole experience took us over an hour for lunch in a dead restaurant. I won't recommend or be going back. For these 3 items it was $55 and again, we had water. As those of you who read my reviews often know, I am in charge of picking the venues for my retirement group's monthly luncheons. This year, I wanted something new and special for our holiday luncheon in December. I went online and asked Perplexity for a list of restaurants that would meet our needs. This was one of them. The restaurant is in an area called the Rock. It is fairly new, and we found it a little hard to find. When we did find it, we weren't sure how to get to the front door. Unfortunately, we had driven right past all the handicap parking, which would've made it about a 50 foot walk to the door for my friend. Instead, we ended up walking all the way around the building to find the entrance. The restaurant was very nicely laid out and decorated. It had a wide open feeling in the dining room. We were given two large tables towards the back that were almost private. The menu was not what most of us would expect to find on a traditional Italian restaurant menu. However, we all managed to find something that we enjoyed. As every meal was placed on the table, I wished I had ordered it instead. Then they finally brought mine, and it was very good. For me, the highlights were the selection of mocktails. They had several of them, and they were all much more creative than usual. I tried two of them and they were great. Another thing I have to sing praises about are those wonderful deviled eggs! They were insanely delicious and so well prepared. We actually asked if we could get the recipe. The chef came to our table, and, although he shared some of the ingredients, he wasn't overly willing to just just out and out tell us how to make them. Our server was a young man named Ian. He was simply amazing. Y'all know how I feel about good servers. No matter how good the meal is, I won't be back if I don't get good service. Ian knew his menu, he answered way too many questions that we old folks always ask, and he was very friendly the whole time. They knocked it out of the park with the menu & the execution. Very versatile options while still remaining a familiar feel. The ambiance is awesome as well, there's indoor & outdoor seating with two levels. Outside there are two patios with both overlooking the rock at La Cantera (an impressive installation for the community with a HUGE screen for showing sports/movies, a splash pad, basketball, & more). I met a friend here for one of my birthday lunches and it was a great experience. The waiter was attentive and patient since I had never been here before and had lots of questions. He was attentive, informative and friendly. We ordered 2 appetizers: marinated steak bites and Tuscan risotto arancini. They were cooked perfectly and flavorful. I ordered the fried chicken (rarely do I order this at fast food restaurants) but went off the recommendation of our waiter. It's was soooooo good! The chicken was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The portion size was a lot more than expected too. My husband ordered my go to, salmon. It was cooked nicely and seasoned well. As we went early afternoon on a Monday, there wasn't too many people; which made for a lovely personal experience. Most places include bread service with your meal, here they charge/. We decided to try it and ordered bread service for 1. Very disappointed! It was one slice of bread, no dipping sauce as the bread came with sea salt, oil and Parmesan on it. We came here for light the lamp blood cancer walk event. I love it here esp when it's not scorching hot. We had margarita, pizza and goat cheese with naan. Delish! I am not sure if could have asked for more bread since I was too full to contemplate it. I started off with the baked Gorgonzola cazuela with walnuts and fig. This is a pretty good shareable dish to start with. The walnuts gave it a good crunch. The Gorgonzola flavor was not overpowering. It came with slices of pita bread. For my main dish I had the rigatoni pomodoro. I opted to add shrimp as a protein. It was good, but not impressive. The food was good, but pricy. The place is located at the rock at La Cantera. We were fortunate to have been served by a young man who is a college student. He had excellent customer service skills. He was very attentive and he did not hesitate to give his recommendations, especially on our wine selection. We tried the Burrata as the starter which was excellent. We paired this with a mix of Caesar Salad and Mixed Greens. Our main entrees were the skewered chicken and beef as well as the Bolognese. We all enjoyed our selections. The cocktail was tiny with barely any alcohol and too sweet. The service was so slow, I don't think our order went through when we ordered until we asked for our cocktail that took 30 mins until we asked for it then 15 minutes later our pizza came. I was at Roca & Martillo for a Spurs watch party and had the most insulting experience with their management. I was sitting on a couch in an open, unreserved area with zero signage. A manager actually approached me, claimed the spot was for the owner, and then physically took the seat I was using to move it into a "VIP" section.Instead of treating me like a paying guest, I was treated like a furniture supplier for the owner's private party. When I confronted the manager about taking a seat away from a guest who was already using it, he was completely dismissive and didn't even offer an apology.As a local and a loyal Spurs fan, I'm disgusted that management would literally take a seat out from under a customer just to benefit the owner's section. This was a blatant display of hostile management and zero hospitality. I've already reached out to corporate for a formal response, but be warned: if you aren't part of the "inner circle" here, your comfort doesn't matter to them. The only item I didn't love was the bucatini pasta - the actual pasta was too thick for my taste and while there was more butternut squash than other reviews led me to believe there would be, I still would have liked more because it was the best part of the dish. We had the Tuscan-Herbed Mozzarella, the Marinated Steak Bites, and the Caprese Deviled Eggs (the last on a lark). The portions were generous and the food so delicious (we ate every last bite). Seeing this restaurant on Eater San Antonio's top new restaurants in San Antonio made it a no-brainer that we had to go try Roca & Martillo. Made reservations as it was a Friday night and was pleased to find out that the restaurant was not very busy when we arrived. Parking was a bit difficult as there was a special event going on at The Park and most of the parking was reserved for VIP tickets. After ordering our drinks, one of the beverages that was ordered a nonalcoholic beer was delivered and unbeknownst to us until trying it. It was actually a regular beer. This could have been a very bad mistake as one member of our party is allergic to alcohol. The server blamed the bartender and said that the bartender had not checked however, they were all out of the non-alcoholic beer. No other options were provided, and water was substituted. Starters consisting of the pulled mozzarella, cauliflower bisque, and field green salad were chosen for the beginning of the meal. These appetizers were all flavorful and good with the exception of the pulled mozzarella. That was a little bit dry and rubbery, however, it was still very flavorful. The meal continued to go downhill when the entrées were brought. Two people had the brisket lasagna unfortunately the lasagna was ice cold in the center and was smothered with so much sauce the actual lasagne was hard to find. The brisket inside, rather than being shredded or pulled brisket, appeared to be ground beef like pieces of brisket if you could call it that. After asking them to heat up the lasagna so it was warm it took more than 30 minutes to get the food back. By that time all of the other meals the party was eating or either finished or cold from waiting. The Gnocchi Roulade, if you could even call it, gnocchi was more like two slices of potato that had been mashed and fried flavorless and disgusting. The bucatini was OK, however even that was lacking in the flavor department as the brown butter sauce was not very browned in flavor. Overall, the experience was lackluster, definitely not what I would consider food from a top quality chef. It appears Jason Dady is more interested in being a clipboard chef than putting out a quality product, unfortunately. I would not recommend this restaurant to others unless there are significant changes made. After expressing our discontent to the server, nothing was done other than she informed me. She did not charge me for the beer. That was the wrong product anyway. A major disappointment and not sure why it is even on the eaters list of top new restaurants. read more

The food was amazing, we had 15 people in our group but there were no other tables except one, so the service should not have been so slow. They split us up in two tables so that was awful because we were at a work function and could not sit next to each other. The server took a few drink orders but not all. Then took a long time to bring some of the drinks, we had to ask where they were. Then 1 table ordered appetizers and our table wanted to order our meals because we didn't have a lot of time but waitress said "Well the other table ordered appetizers so that's all I'm taking orders for now". I've never heard of that. So we had to wait an hour because by the time they brought the appetizers. Then another 40 min to get our food. Obviously with 15 orders it will take the kitchen a long time to make them so why not take orders separately. The bar had a nice setup. However, I was shocked they did not have draft beer. I opted for a can of Mcconauhaze. I was also surprised the cost of a 12 oz can was over $10. With my teammates trickling in, we moved over to our reserved table. We started our meal with some apps, the onion rings and deviled eggs. I preferred the onion rings, as they had a nice crunch to them and they paired with the dipping sauces. Since our company was taking care of the dinner, I went with the beef filet. It came with 2 sides, asparagus and crispy Tuscan potatoes. I really enjoyed the cook on the steak, and the potatoes lived up to their description. I was indifferent about the asparagus. After dinner had concluded, a couple of my coworkers when back to the bar for an after dinner drink. I ordered an old fashioned. The drink was great, but was far more costly than I would have expected. Overall, I am not sure if I will come back. There are better options for a good steak around. read more

With such a broad menu, Roca & Martillo would be a good choice for groups and multigenerational meals.
