I've been going here for years when we lived closer. Now live 30 miles away and don't come often as I would like. Brought some friends up last night for their first time, they loved it thought it was one of the best Thai foods they have had. We will definitely be back up sooner than later. I want to start out by saying what a nice little restaurant this is. The wait staff is particularly pleasant, the service was excellent all around. But I was unimpressed with the food. Let me explain. Food can be judged in several ways; presentation, quality, flavor and quantity. Presentation - I would rate the appearance of the food as average. I ordered the lemongrass chicken and the golden bags. I've had both at many different Thai restaurants before. There was nothing particularly special about the appearance of the food we were served. Quality - I would rate the quality of the food good. The chicken was cooked and not overcooked, the broccoli appeared fresh as well. This is important, I've had good tasting food that was made with poor quality ingredients. This was not the case. Flavor - I would rate this as below average. The food was bland. From the golden pockets (dumplings) to the lemongrass chicken, there was virtually no flavor. It was as if you steamed chicken and broccoli and threw a few peanuts on top. The dumplings were bland, no flavor. Quantity - I ordered the dinner size for lunch, it was slightly below adequate. I admit I may be used to my local restaurant that provides bigger portions, so I may be spoiled. The golden bags, of which there were 6, were small as well. Overall, I would rate this place as average, not great and not terrible. For the price, however, it should have been better. So from my perspective, I wouldn't come back unless it just so happens to be for a meeting and the location is convenient. To those who have rated it higher than me, I am an avid Asian food lover, I've had Thai food in Bangkok, as well as some of the more popular restaurants in the states. And, in all fairness, I have not tried more than these two dishes. I see others named specific dishes that I didn't try, those sound like they were better than what I ordered. In summary, this is a place that you need to judge on your own. Have a few dishes and see what you think. Superb food served by some cheerful folk. For those who can move beyond the Thai green/red curry there's ample choice and it's all tasty too. Those brave folk who can tolerate a 5 on the 1-5 scale will not be disappointed; 3 was plenty hot for me! Another stop to the Thai place in Sturbridge... Spicy fried rice, crab rangoons, and spicy noodles. Cost around 20 bucks and was enough for 2 plus enough left for a whole other meal for left overs. I have been here numerous times and love not only the food but the staff. Those who work at this restaurant are clearly thankful for your business and treat you like your the most important customer they have ever had. This visit was late on a Thursday night during the brownfield flea market week which meant a long wait for a table. As I was waiting a person there from out of state said they make a special trip to this location when they are nearby as its one of the best thai places around. I LOVED this place until the last few months. I have several food allergies and until recently they were excellent with them. Two months ago I ordered some food, explaining my allergies and the severity of them (as I always have), I got my normal order, and had a minor reaction (thankfully). Called informing them, well left a message nvr to be returned. So after a few month I thought I would give it another try. This time saying three times I have a gluten and Severe, epi pen taking, allergy to all fish products. I picked up the food, asked them again "no gluten and no fish? I was told "yup, no problem, if that's what u ordered." I open the soup took a drink (it is an excellent soup, when made correctly), then s giant shrimp hit my nose! I ran used my epi pen took 2 Benadryl, called the place, not a oh I'm so sorry, NOTHING! Just "I'll let the manager know and we will get back to you", still waiting on that call. It took me two hrs to get it under control! If you ever been to hospital w a reaction, it's better managed at home! Total of two epi pens and 3 Benadryl...and not one response or Apology. We walked in and while we waited 10 minutes for menus, the couple behind us was complaining to each other about their experience. It took another 10 mins to place our order. Food timing for us was ok. For appetizers: The golden cups weren't flavorful, nor was the Tom Kha Kai. The soup seemed to lack any spice and galanga. For entrees: the thai basil had some nice flavor but there was almost no basil (just a piece if a leaf) and it has no heat. The veggies were mushy. My husband got the pad thai and he was happy with it. All of the above for just under $20, so the prices are good. However, I would rather pay more to value my experience. We were never checked on or asked about our meal until we were finished and I called her for water and a box. Our waitress asked us twice if we wanted dessert before bringing us the check and then never came back to get payment. I had to go to the bar to get her attention after 10 mins (I was the second person in the room to have to do that). Meanwhile, the couple behind us left unhappy. Additionally, the woman beside us had explained a previous negative experience to the waitress about how her chicken was served. She wanted to make sure that the chicken wings were cut at the joints instead of getting them whole. The girl didn't understand what the customer was describing so she brought the cook out. He explained that he always cuts them as she described. As we were leaving, the customer was clearly upset, showing the server that it wasn't served as she requested. My husband and drove 45 mins to dine here. Only because their menus listed Thai/Lao dishes. Upon our arrival there was a long wait without any greeting ( felt awkward) Until she was ready to seat us. With only a few customers dining in and one customer ahead of us. My husband asked if they offer any discounts to Government Officials. The waitress said No without any explanation. Our bill came to $50 and we had a to go order of chicken fried rice with out eggs due to allergies. Only to get home and find eggs in our order. We immediately contacted the restaurant and requested to speak with the Owner/Mgr . The lady ( Noy) stated there is no one available. We explained our issues and the only thing she said was " sorry" will make a new one and to bring the rice back. We drove another 45 mins back to get our fried rice. Only to have another disappointment with the mushy rice. And very bland! Sadly we WILL NOT BE BACK! They lost another customer. Our family and friends will no longer support them as well. The entire experience was an absolute nightmare . She was unprofessional, has no compassion and understanding the fact that we drove 45 mins each way, time and money. Food was mediocre at best. Pad Thai was excessively sweet, with only noodles, some chopped peanuts, and a couple of pieces of chicken and shrimp. It was edible, but easily the worst pad Thai I've ever had from a restaurant. Papaya salad had a very strong, predominant taste of fish sauce. Couldn't eat it. Service was slow. Was not checked on and water was not refilled. Came in through the back door from the parking lot and the sign we could see posted on the inside front door (so you would see it if entering through the front door--we read it backwards from inside) said something like "cash only, sorry" next to the accepted credit cards sticker. A must stop and eat at spot. Picked this restaurant because they had beef larb. I visited other establishments and they generally have only chicken larb. Thai/Laos food is in my DNA so it's always interesting to see how other places measure up to "home cooking". Thai Place did not disappoint. Ordered some sticky rice for scooping and dipping. Spice level we ordered was a 3. It was light and every bite had a nice spicy kick ending with some lime. Papaya salad was next and A+. Party of 2 and we could of easily just had those 2 items but decided to try add the lemon grass chicken. My assumption was it would be a art of the chicken and was happy to see bite size pieces and very lightly fried and sautéed. Veggies underneath and I'm assuming it was cabbage but didn't ask but this was also a must try. The lemon grass wasn't overpowering at all. Beef was next and the beef was tender and a very generous portion. Safe to say we have leftovers. If ever in this area give it a try. Home cooking, everyone is helpful and quick to provide excellent service and food. Oh......Thai tea is a necessity if you don't get an adult beverage. I did notice that they did not do well with creating people and were I. Desperate need of a hostess, greater, or manager. I also noticed this happened time and time again with others entering and looking bewildered on when someone might great. The place had a steady flow of people and lots of pick up orders going on. We have been here several times and have always enjoyed the experience. It seems unlikely to find such good Thai food just outside of Old Sturbridge Village, but this place is well worth stopping by. First course is always the same "angel wings" and "Golden cups". I would love to explore more of the app menu but these two things grab us each time. As a main course I love the pad Thai, but have also had the Tamarind Duck, and several of the Curries. My boyfriend got Cashew Chicken last time and loved it. I love this place! Everytime I go here I love the food, and the service is great as well. We always get the Thai rolls for the appetizer and this last time got the Paradise Beef as well and that was awesome too. These two are so full of flavor and just perfect for appetizers. The Satay was good before too. Our meals were so delicious as well. I had the Lemon Grass Chicken and it was cooked so well, with so much flavor but not overpowering. Anyone who has just manuevered their way through incessant Pike traffic and has finally reached the haven known as I-84, here is a place to put your feet up (figuratively) and chow down (literally) on some of the best Thai food west of Boston. Located on Route 20 off exit 3 (going towards Sturbridge/Brimfield), this restaurant is located in a very unassuming plaza across from Yankee Spirits. For a mere 9 bucks, I was delivered a plate piled, and I mean PILED, with pad thai, tom yum soup, and coconut ice cream. Service was quick and cordial, quality was astounding. And unlike most hole-in-the-walls, the decor was actually very classy. I felt like I had treated myself to a nice night out, and it only cost whatever was crammed in the bottom of my purse. Plus, it was a perfect way to subdue the rage boiling in me after being subjected to yet another 3-hr drive down 90 (which should only take an hour, mind you). Thai Place is definitely a hard place to spot, or it would be, if it didn't have a sign out in front with an elephant. If anyone is unfamiliar with Sturbridge, MA, it's quite noted that the area is the home of Old Sturbridge Village (OSV), a small area reminiscent of Old Wiliamsburg, VA. Thai Place is my most recommended thai restaurant in Massachusetts. I can say this after a few years of frequenting it. There are several options for those who are vegan or vegetarian. I usually choose between one or two vegetable dishes and add tofu. My friends get very good noodle dishes, including one called Country Noodles, which has chicken and veggies mixed in with egg. My friend has gotten that twice in a row, and has enjoyed it. There are appetizers, soups (their Tom Khar soup is AMAZINGLY COCONUTTY), entrees, and desserts. They also have a wine list, though I've not partaken from it. The decor is phenominally beautiful, inso much that they've mixed an old colonial-style building with Thai decor. I was at the Thai with my daughter yesterday celebrating our Birthdays which are two days apart. The chicken wings were overcooked, the crab with cream cheese was awful. The bathroom floor was disgustingly dirty, you need to scrub it. the restaurant floor was in need of a redue. The chairs were all dusty and dirty. I will not go back there again. In a word: gross. The inside of the Thai Place restaurant had a overly disinfected and over perfumed aroma. We sat next to the front window (the only window) which had tons of dead insects, photo included (if they can't even wipe these away for the customers sake I don't want to think about the condition of the kitchen). I ordered the Tom Yum soup which was good and spicy but I also got the vegetable Pad Thai and it was extremely bland and boring. How do you mess up pad thai?! The tofu was just plain nasty. ALLERGY ALERT! This restaurant doesn't understand basic food safety. I have a child with a peanut allergy. I explain this to them when I order and request no peanut sauce be put with my food. I haven't eaten there in years because of this. Tried again last night (since that child was eating elsewhere). Wanted the kid to be able to eat leftovers, but yet again, there was peanut sauce! Went once before and explained I couldn't accept food that had peanut stuff near it and he told me it was fine, just take it out. Explained that if the allergen had spilled on the outside of the container or it leaked, my kid could wind up in the hospital. Clearly didn't care. Who knew Sturbridge would be a place to go for Thai food? I don't know about you, but when I think of Sturbridge, I envision chicken pot pie and pot roast. On a recommendation, my friend and I decided to try it. We were greeted quickly and felt very welcomed. The decor had a lot of wood, kind of cabinish like you would expect in Sturbridge, but with some Thai accents. The food was very good and very cheap! I can't remember the last time I paid $3 for a beer. The selection isn't great, but a $3 Sam Adams is terrific. For $40 plus tip: Soup, chicken satay, pad thai, basil shimp, brown rice, a glass of wine, and a beer. The flavor was great and the service was friendly and attentive. A plus is it is walking distrance from the Sturbridge Conference Center, so we didn't have to give up our primo parking spot. read more

I was surprised; Thai food and the old-fashioned country atmosphere of Sturbridge, especially right at the entrance to Old Sturbridge Village, don't go together in my head. But they apparently mix well, as the food here was quite good. I had the panang chicken curry, and it was delicious. The Thai iced tea was darker than I'm used to, but no less awesome. And the dessert! They didn't have my favorite, sweet sticky rice with mango, but the mousse cake... good heavens! It was divine. I wish I had saved more room for it. Next time, I suppose. The service was excellent, and the decor was pleasant; a bit of an odd jump to go from quaint New England buildings outside, and typical Thai decor inside. This was my first experience with Thai food, so I can't speak to the relative quality or authenticity of the meals. It was delicious, however, for a first-timer. The location is nice - little spot tucked away in downtown Sturbridge. A bit hard to find in the dark, but when the GPS failed I was able to find my way. There is both a front and rear entrance (my date and I each chose different ones, so it took us a while to find each other). The ambiance is nice - all hardwood, mild Thai decoration, and quiet music playing in the background. The service was fantastic. They were unobtrusive until we were ready, quick and helpful when we ordered (I had to ask them to tone down the "superb beef" for my weak American palate) and they kept my water glass full without interrupting our good time at all. At the end, they boxed up the leftovers without complaint, and let us stay as long as we wanted just to talk. And for all of that, the meal was extremely inexpensive.
