Delicious restaurant with amazing food. I usually try to get takeout here whenever I visit SF for work. I've gotten the Pad Kee Mao, the papaya salad and the duck curry with lychee. Previously I've had the Pad Thai and Panang curry. All were delicious. This is essentially a hole in the wall spot with not too much seating inside so I'd highly recommend takeout or delivery from this spot. Ok, I kept hearing good things about this place and there was a line to get in so I had to try for myself. Umm sorry I don't get the hype. The place was super cramped and we were seated in the very back table next to the service door. There was a funky not good smell coming out from the back, maybe cleaning stuff from the bathroom? Now the food: These were ok for me: Pad Thai was the best dish, balanced sauce not too sweet not too salty. Thai papaya salad: I asked for mild, it was spicy enough for others in my table to complain it was too spicy! But for me it was a ok kick of spice and flavor. Vegetable Eggrolls: nice pepper taste and nice filling, I liked the flavor and didn't miss the meat. Pad See Ew: this was so bad, it was just super salty flat noodles, I took a bite and was done with that. It was soaked in soy sauce no balance in flavor, not good. The kitchen is in the front and restaurant setup is like a take-out place. We ordered shrimp pad Thai, shrimp with wide noodles, and a fish with curry sauce. As a Thai food lover, I was not disappointed with my visit at The Thonglor. I was impressed by the Thonglor Curry which consisted of fresh kabocha squash and vibrant veggies in a flavorful red curry. I would highly recommend ordering a side of coconut rice. As it was the perfect pairing to this curry. We also ordered a side of vegetable rolls which were great for sharing. This was a really cool place. The interior is tightly packed and cozy. It's like they wedged it in between two other restaurants. Oh wait. They did! But it's cool. Everyone is close together and sociable. You're mixed in with college kids, business professionals, families on vacation. It's great! The food was delicious, served fresh, and the portion sizes are just right. The service was really good as well. They check on you regularly and refill your water before it empties. This is a very small low profile Thai restaurant close to Union Square. I had a late lunch after morning meetings and this was the closest to the Hilton. As you can see from inside, there is not a lot of seating, but after lunch crowd is open. This place cooks authentic thai food. The curry is outstanding and ingredients fresh. I ordered the green curry with chicken, green beans, eggplant, thai basil and green peppers. I asked for thai spicy and they obliged unlike other places that are afraid to serve Americans thai spicy. They charged $1 extra for that but it was ok since i could tell they added freshly cut jalapeños and thai peppers. My winter sinuses were finally opened. Had a side of their fried prawns which were very good and not greasy. The entire menu looks good and I saw the table next to me order stir fried rice thai fried chicken. This was my first time at this particular Thai restaurant. Parking is scarce, but Man- it SMELLS delicious as you walk in! We were lucky to be seated at 5p before the dinner crowd showed up on that Sunday evening and ever customer smelled to lick their plates/bowl clean! I think we were the ONLY table that couldn't finish our dinner! Hahaa We got Shrimp/chicken pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice w/o soy sauce (food allergy), and curry pockets with a mint lemonade and Thai lemonade. Everything was tasty and filling! I appreciated that this restaurant was walking distance to our hotel. The restaurant is very tiny and narrow. Everyone was sitting close to each other, but the food proved why everyone packed this tiny place up. Loved the papaya salad and the mango sticky rice dessert! The soup I had was ok. Clean, classic Thai restaurant with a cheery yellow storefront keeps prices in line for the high quality of food they serve. You'll have a difficult time ordering since many items on the menu look tasty and items coming out of the kitchen for other tables will have you flipping pages yet again to make the right choice. If you're wavering, try the roast duck with rice, it was a standout: Juicy, thick slices of delectable, perfectly cooked duck ($22.50) on a bed of bok choy. Raad Na with beef ($18) seemed to lack a depth of flavor but they really aimed to give me the dish I wanted including how I wanted the noodles cooked that were nice and chewy. The portion was quite large; I took much of it home. Another standout- and don't miss out- is the fried calamari appetizer ($14) with a plate piled high with fresh calamari with a shatter crust that made it even more delicious. To-go orders were as brisk as dine in was busy. There were a good amount of locals in addition to tourists who found their way there. Somehow the tiny kitchen fit at least 4 cooks keeping the line moving. Two servers worked hard and kept up with the dining room and orders ready to head out. The only criticism is the broccoli in my Raad Na was a bit past its prime (but still crunchy) and pink ginger is a personal pet peeve but other than these very small quibbles, this restaurant is firing on all cylinders. Head to the theater district of Union Square or get delivery from The Thonglor. Street parking around the corner on Mason wasn't difficult: Meters end at 6pm and my car was left alone. read more

Came by for lunch the other day and it was a rather mediocre experience. Despite stating that the restaurant opens at 11 am on Yelp, the restaurant didn't open until 11:30 am... Thonglor is located in the touristy Union Square and serves Americanized-Thai style food. Dining is indoors exclusively with a few tables indoor along with an open kitchen. The loo is in the back. Started off with the Thai Iced Tea and it was decent. It's the typical Americanized watered-down Thai tea, unlike the super strong ones in Thailand... bummer. Moved on to the moo ping pork skewers and it was a disappointment. Typical skewers feature fatty pork grilled on a charcoal grill. This version was a piece of lean pork with a marinate and it seems like they used a gas grill as the grill marks were few and far and in between... The crab fried rice was also mediocre. The flavors on the fried rice were quite flat and the raw onions seemed to have been sitting around. There was a generous toppiong of crab though. ~$53/head for lunch with plenty of leftovers. read more

The Thonglor is the truest definition of the little hole in the wall restaurant that you can't wait to come back to. I was told this is a family run restaurant, and I can only figure it's true because this food is so dang good, it must be beloved family recipes. I had the shrimp pad Thai based on our server's recommendation. It was delicious when I ate it in the restaurant, and the true tell of a great dish, it was even delicious cold the next day as leftovers. Everyone in my party raved about how great their dishes were too. The Thai iced tea was perfection, the service was awesome. What a fantastic restaurant! This place is very small and intimate, if my count was right it seats about 24 total. So when you visit, expect that and appreciate the intimacy and know it only adds to the experience. Came around 10 pm on a Tuesday for a late dinner. We were able to get a table (actually the last one available). I'm usually not a fan of Tom Yum flavors, but for some reason the picture on the menu looked really appetizing and I decided to give the Tom Yum noodle soup a shot. My friend got the Pad Cashew Nut with Chicken. Our food came out pretty quickly after ordering, ~10ish minutes. Tom Yum Noodle Soup was a solid 10/10. Near our hotel so we thought let's eat here. Small restaurant with the kitchen toward the front. Unusual but probably common in SF. We inquired about the pad kee mow and then ordered it along with a side of fried rice. Fried rice came & it was really good. Then a plate of pad thai was plopped on our table. We were confused as we did not order pad thai. It was taken away but then the lady who took our order was adamant that we ordered pad thai. We told her we ordered pad kee now. She refused to believe us. I know the difference between my thai noodles & I did not order pad Thai. As I like all Thai noodles, my husband & I ended up eating it. It's super small, so I usually only come here for takeout, but if you want to wait for an open table there's about 8 tables in the back of the restaurant that are almost always full, at least when I visit here. The pad thai is next level, with perfect chewy noodles and packed with a tangy-sweet-salty balance that had us going "whoa" with every bite. The Tom Kha soup our go to for rainy days as my comfort soup for the soul. We also crushed the som tum (papaya salad) - super fresh, nose-clearing spicy (ask for Thai hot if you're brave!), the panang curry was rich and creamy, and the pad gra pow with ground pork was sweet-spicy perfection. Everything tasted authentic and fresh, with big portions and great vegan options too. If you're at the Curran Theatre (across the street), this would be a place to grab a quick bite. It's more like a small hole in the wall with VERY limited seating. The place is very small, and not conducive for larger groups. Tables are also very close to one another due to the small size of the restaurant. So, not a lot of privacy in terms of conversation. Customer turnover here is pretty quick. People don't seem to linger. Food comes out quite quickly, even when the restaurant is full. Feels more like a fast food experience, than a "dining" experience. I've only tried the Seafood Soup with rice stick noodles. Pretty good. Not overly salted and decent amount of seafood. One word of caution about the table in the very back, where I was seated. Every time the door opened, you could feel a strong breeze. It blew all my napkins off the table repeatedly. Problem is that this happened A LOT. The owner (?) was nice enough and apologized but said there wasn't anything he could do about it! I dunno, maybe fix the glitch or just not seat customers at the table. It was pretty annoying having that breeze blow through constantly. So I loved the ambiance and the vibe inside and out. As a visitor from Southern California, I was excited because this truly felt like a San Francisco eatery. So A+ for everything aesthetic. Even my dish was plated beautifully. Service was fine. Not bad at all but also, nothing to write home about. Food wise.... I was disappointed. I can name at least 50 better Thai restaurants in SoCal and I promise, this is not me being a hateful Dodgers fan lol. I ordered the Crispy Fried Chicken over Fried Rice and it was so bland! A friend and I were looking for a quick sit down restaurant before a concert at August Hall and The Thonglor was at the top of our list of options and it was great since it was less than a block away. Once we parked, we scoped out the general admission line at the venue and since it didn't look bad we decided to order for dine in at the restaurant. We arrived at the restaurant around 5:30pm on a Tuesday and were seated immediately; the place is a bit small inside and only one other party was seated at the time. We decided on the crispy fried chicken over fried rice and Pad Thai with pork. I was excited to see Guay Tiew Lord on the menu since not all Thai restaurants in the Bay Area offer it, but I decided not to order it in case it since it usually makes me a bit thirsty and I didn't want to be uncomfortably thirsty during the concert. The Pad Thai came out first after no more than ten minutes and looked like a typical Pad Thai, however there was something about the dish that made it taste really great. The noodles had the perfect amount of sauce and I liked that the plate didn't have an overwhelming amount of bean spouts. Although the black square plate made the dish look nice, the portion was a bit small for the price, but this is expected in Union Square. The crispy chicken over fried rice was an excellent choice for our other dish. The chicken was moist and seasoned well and had a light batter that didn't feel oily. A small amount of sweet chili sauce was provided but I didn't need it since the chicken tasted great on its own. The fried rice was a typical Thai fried rice but it complemented the chicken very well. The chicken to rice ratio was perfect as well. Both dishes were prepared very well, though I highly recommend the fried chicken over fried rice for first timers. Service was quick and the waiter was friendly. We did notice the restaurant fill up while we were eating and there also was a line of people waiting for tables so we got there at a good time. I think we made a good choice with this restaurant and still had a good spot in line for the concert. There is only street parking because it's SF. No surprise there. I had to park around the corner since the parking in front of the establishment says "tow away". There is also very limited seating. There is about 7 tables so expect to be on the waitlist. There is also only 1 waitress who works very hard in a cramped environment so please be patient. Onto the food, I got pad thai with shrimp (extra $3) and crab fried rice. The pad thai had a good balance of sweet, sour, and salt flavor. The noodles were more al dente and the shrimps were nicely cooked. There were about 4 shrimps and the noodle portions were enough for 2 people. The crab meat fried rice was generous in proportion for both rice and crab meat. They had slightly burnt the rice on the bottom to make it crunchy and lots of flavor. Showing up around 6pm on a Tuesday night meant less than 10 minutes of waiting. Once seated and food ordered, the food shows up fast. For dinner, my buddy and I ordered roasted duck in a curry sauce served with rice and pad kee mao (drunken noodles). While both were quite tasty, there wasn't as much duck as I would have hoped. So I've gotten take out from here before. My hotel was nearby so a coworker and i decided to go sit in. We walked over around 3:30 pulled on the door and it was locked. A lady walked into view and said it was closed. There were no times opening times or an open or closed sign on the door. I pulled up details on yelp and saw that they opened at 4. Knowing the food was good we decided to drop our bags off at the hotel and come back. We walked back over at 4:10, pulled on the door which was now open just to get yelled at by an auntie in the kitchen that they are closed. So I said well it says you open at 4 and the door is open. The Thonglor has been on my list of wanting to try for awhile, but I also try to stay out of the Union Square area (not due to crime, but lack of parking), so when an opportunity arose, I took it! I needed to get a quick lunch so I ordered the Pad Gra Pow with ground pork along with Thai Iced Coffee. The Pad Gra Pow was phenomenal! I ordered it without the bell peppers, but each bite got more and more delicious. I found myself shoveling the food into my belly without making attempts to breathe. Delicious!!! This unassuming restaurant has limited seating inside but the service team is friendly and quick, sometimes too quick (they overlooked giving me utensils when the food arrived).
