Great location, but so-so food. The biggest issue with the food was the over-salting of everything. Looking beyond that, the Macro salad was otherwise kind of bland and without any harmony. Just a bunch of stuff in a bowl. The philly fries were soggy and pretty boring. There seemed to be some confusion in the kitchen, and just some general teething issues. The menu may be a little bit two extensive and ambitious at the moment? Perhaps in a few months they can pull it together and get food worthy of the setting. read more

Went back here in a little over two years after I had come the first time. Came for breakfast one week and for dinner the following week. In both cases we had amazing service, the food was delicious and the atmosphere is just plain fun. For breakfast I had the cream cheese and chives scramble with grits and rye toast. I really like the scramble, Greta needed salt but we're good and I loved the jelly that came with the toast. On the second occasion I came for restaurant week and happy hour. From the photos you will see we ordered a lot of food! We had the cheese curds - they were delicious and super greasy, the kale salad was one of my favorites, the chicken wings are out of this world exceptional-my favorite item on the menu, the French dip is good, the mac & cheese was also good but probably not something I would order again, and the hot fudge sundae with a maraschino cherry was a perfect ending. we also had the warm honey sage sake which was a delicious drink on a cold day. Consistency is a major problem. I hate giving this place three stars- I am all over their ethics, their politics, and their service which is consistently brilliant. But I've had four breakfasts here and the FOOD is just not consistent. Take my favorite dish, the bruleed grapefruit. It's a masterpiece of flavor: honey torched over half a grapefruit so at its best you have a medium-thickness layer of brittle honey and enough cook that it melds with the fruit. I crave this dish. This dish is someone's best idea. The problem is, I have had this same dish four very different ways on four separate occasions: totally torched and thick layer of honey (pretty damn good), medium torch and medium honey layer (pretty good), and then twice it's been very light on honey, light on cooking, which ends up being a letdown. The breakfast dishes I've had alongside the grapefruit (breakfast nachos, blue corn pancakes with green chilies, red flannel salted cod hash, mushroom/swiss omelet with hashbrowns) have all been absolutely meh. The pancakes were super dry; the hashbrowns were chewy and cold; the salted cod was so powerful that it obliterated the beets, and the nachos tasted like someone had called it in that morning. I want to love this place, but I cannot keep spending $4 on half a grapefruit that's gonna bum me out half the time. read more

I had heard amazing things about tiny diner so I couldn't wait to finally make it this morning! When we got there and say down, our waiter seemed a bit aloof but no big deal. I eventually ordered the cheddar and pickled jalapeño scramble and one of the iced coffee drinks. The rest of my party tried to order drinks and it was a very confusing experience again due to an aloof wait staff. I eventually got my food and it was good. I didn't find it particularly inspired and the menu didn't seem as amazingly inspiring as I had heard. Overall, the food was fine but not more than that. The service was slightly uncomfortable and the overall experience just left me a bit blasé toward the whole thing. Not bad but I won't be running back anytime soon... read more

The concept of this restaurant is very wonderful. Farm to table. They are focused on locally supplied food and use solar panels to help with their electricity. They have a fabulous patio, and I mean fabulous. There is an abundance of outdoor seating it kind of takes away from the name "tiny" diner. I mean the inside isn't the biggest, but it's humongous compared to the "Colossal" Cafe. The decorating is so adorable and colorful. It makes me smile just looking around at all the detail and thought that was put into it. The food here is great. Clean food, great flavors, lots of options. The menu rotates regularly so there are always new menu items coming and going to keep things fresh and exciting. I've never been disappointed with what I've ordered. They also are open 7 days a week and serve breakfast everyday. They used to have a steak and egg breakfast option that they no longer have, which makes me sad. Lunch today was my third visit to Tiny Diner and, given my "three strikes and you're out" philosophy, probably my last. First visit was lunch, salad and chicken salad sandwich which had way more carrots in it than chicken. I think someone just waved a piece of chicken over the thickly sliced bland white bread. Second time was a happy hour gathering where service was so erratic that I nearly got up to help. Today - Green chili hamburger. Having lived in New Mexico, my expectations were modest, but not even those were met. My medium burger was dry and very well cooked through and, while there were some tasty tidbits of poblano chilies, nothing that resembled green chili sauce. Server recommended seasoned fries to accompany this New Mexico-themed burger, but plain ones arrived instead. Twelve dollars + extra for fries. I can get better and cheaper hamburgers elsewhere. P.S. Yes, I complained about my order to the server (who was excellent), but still had to pay for this. I did get 2 free drink tickets, but that means I need to return. read more

First off, Tiny Diner has atmosphere for days. A spacious patio where patrons are not jammed elbow to elbow, surrounded by a vegetable garden and walking path. Inside, the a small bar (wine & beer) at the back and a modern, comfortable dining room with small tables and great natural light. I love the look and feel of this restaurant. We put our name in with the host and proceeded to the bar to grab a drink for our short wait. The bartender was also serving a few of the tables nearby and seemed mildly confused that we were grabbing drinks. She acknowledged us but waited a bit before she got our drinks going. Strange. They make some interesting cocktails with wine or beer in place of liquor. I stuck with good ol beer. We were promptly seated, so let's get to what matters. Food Ancho chile rubbed wings for the app. These were really, really good. I think they entered my top 5 wing list for the TCs. Kale salad. Would you be surprised if I told you that this was my favorite item we ate? You should be. It was so simple but so bursting with flavor. I kept coming back and fork fighting with my lady over the next bite. Mole Pulled Chicken Burrito. 2/5. I mean, it was good. It's a burrito. But it was very average. The pasta. So I wanted the Fresh Cut Linguini but they had a pasta special not on the menu that was taking it's place that night, so I went with that. It was similar, it was very good, it was creamy, it had great fresh pasta, it was not warm enough. That is the most memorably thing, I wanted it to be warmer immediately after the first bite. But I ate it all because it was good. We were full and fairly satisfied. So I ordered dessert because duh. They have some great shake & malt flavors and after trying their ice cream, you can guarantee I'll be back for that. I ordered an apple cherry crisp with vanilla custard. This has come to be one of my favorite places to eat. If it's a nice day, opt to dine on the patio under the pergola with hanging lanterns. Surrounding the patio is their garden where they grow many of their own vegetables and herbs. I've been there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not once have I been disappointed. Tonight we had 'Shrimp and Grits' and 'Kale Salad'. The shrimp and grits was delish with gulf shrimp, sweet bell peppers, celery, and andouille sausage. The kale salad had kale, red cabbage, lemon, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and pistachios. These two dishes eaten together were fabulous! OMG! This is a place where you can really LOVE your vegetables. I wanted to love it! It has such good reviews on here! And the menu looked delicious. Someone posted a beautiful picture of the red flannel hash on instagram today so I went up there because I was inspired by it! I was torn between trying the red flannel hash or the tofu scramble. My server was very nice and patient with me and I ended up settling on the hash (still thinking about the beautiful photo), plus the combination of beets, hash browns, and salted cod sounded intriguing. I ordered my eggs sunny side up so I could have dippy eggs for my toast. I excitedly waited for my food. When it came out I was disappointed- it looked nothing like the photo. My hash browns were burned and greasy. The eggs were over easy, not sunny side up. The server told me he must have written it down wrong. There was nothing special about the hash browns, they tasted like regular burnt hash browns, no real beet or cod flavor. My server noticed I didn't care for my food because I barely touched it so he offered me a sundae instead but I didn't want a sundae, I wanted real substantial food. They took it off my bill for me which was very nice, but overall I was disappointed by the while experience. I would come back, because it's a charming place. I do want to try that tofu scramble or something else, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make a special trip like I did today. read more

Rude servers, unhelpful for families with children. Though I'd had decent experiences in the past, I went to Tiny Diner early one Sunday morning with my almost two year old son. After waiting without help, though the restaurant was almost empty, eventually an unfriendly waitress instructed us to sit wherever. I asked for a high chair, and she didn't seem to acknowledge me. We found a table and looked around for high chairs but couldn't find them. My son, who had been quiet, eventually got frustrated. Clearly the waitress wasn't helping get us a high chair. I've eaten at Tiny Diner a number of times since it opened a year ago, and just like all of the other restaurants that Kim Bartmann has created, this is another home run! My favorite mealtime to go is for their breakfast selection. A particular favorite is the 1930s Red Flannel Hash (I would lick my plate clean if there was a guarantee that no one would be looking). And like the other Bartmann restaurant establishments, she has created another winner dining environment that everybody involved wins from! I LOVE the outdoor setting with the surrounding gardens and scenery. Having a garden on-site piques all diners curiosity and appears to be a welcome relief to parents for something kids can go check-out and learn from while waiting for your food to arrive. Also knowing that Tiny Diner grows a lot of the food they serve is comforting to know while it backs up their commitment to serving local, organic, & fresh food to their eaters. I also admire that they offer on-site classes that teach us about gardening and other related techniques to sustainability. The class topics alone are a great gift to the community. I'm thrilled to have another high-quality choice to dine at in South Minneapolis. Based on the creative menu with classics AND fun twists on the classics, the friendly wait staff, the ambiance, and MOST ESPECIALLY the delicious food, this is one of my favorite places to dine at as well as recommend to others! read more

Cute little diner with lots of character and the food was great!! The cheese and ham omelet was simple but VERY tasty. The veggie hash plate was also great! Most drip coffee in restaurants that don't have an espresso machine is very weak, but we had decaf coffee and it was flavorful (most of the time decaf tastes burnt). They were also great at making changes to accommodate or dietary needs. I needed keto options so they subbed avacado mash for the hashbrowns and toast. We will be back!! read more

Tiny Diner. Big Flavor. We couldn't have picked a more lovely morning to eat here. The patio is huge, almost the size of the actual dining area inside. The solar panels add a dreamy blue hue to the patio, and when asked how effective they are the waitress said they provide 40-50% of the power for the restaurant. I strolled around the herb gardens and peeked into the twig teepee that are focal points of the patio dining experience. Hubby had the John Denver omelet and I had the shrimp and green chile omelet. He enjoyed his and I really liked mine, even though I was skeptical of shrimp in an omelet...would it be overcooked and rubbery? It would not! Excellent flavor, high quality ingredients. We shared a side of sausage (I ordered bacon, but didn't complain when the wrong meat arrived. Glad I tried it) which was excellent. Love the homemade jam that comes with each plate. Great coffee, and our cups were never less than half full. Can't wait to return and try more dishes from the other menus as well! read more

Went to Tiny Diner for Brunch last weekend, and while I wanted so much to give this cutie patootie restau at least 4 stars, I had the misfortune of ordering something kinda bad on the menu: pork schnitzel and barley pancakes. I guess it was a special time meal inspired by Wisconsin, but really the schnitzel was rather greasy and tough, while the barley pancakes were nothing to write home about. The waitress sold me on it, and in the future maybe I'll remember that brunch is the time to have comfort fare rather than attempt to be daring. I also didn't like having to wait for at least a half hour for a table. I will try it again when the patio opens up and the songbirds are singing. read more

I want to start by saying that the service was great, very timely and polite. My issue is with the food. I ordered a criminally overpriced breakfast burrito. At $11.50 one would expect a pretty satisfying burrito but when it arrived I was severely disappointed. This sad, chody little lump wasn't so much a burrito as it was a tasteless joke. Its was as though they made it a point to put it on the largest plate they could find as to make it look even smaller, just for laughs, like salt in a fresh wound. Our first time here tonight. Got the happy hour price of $4 on glasses of a good Tempranillo. I had shrimp and grits and wife had fish and chips. Both were excellent! Better fish and chips than we had in Seattle and the shrimp and grits as good as the best in New Orleans. Only visited this joint once so far but a nice little surprise! Didn't even know the place existed until a random Yelp search. I really enjoyed it. You will inevitably spend a bit of cash because their prices are all around $10 or more for good eats and good beers/wines/drinks. But it's worth it in my opinion, because the atmosphere is nice and they use quality ingredients and serve quality beers, etc. The staff was nice and welcoming. The place was busy at mid-day on a Sunday but we got seated quickly. I had the "breakfast of champions" which came with two satisfying pancakes, eggs, tasty sourdough toast, hashbrowns and some absolutely delicious chorizo patties. I could've eaten a lot more of the chorizo. I also had a grapefruit mimosa which was just kind of meh, could've used more alcohol. But still, I was impressed by what I could've drank...they had a ton of great-looking taps on hand. My girlfriend said her breakfast burrito was a little cold, but I found the food pretty darn good and very filling, which made up for the somewhat pricey dish ($13.50). I also liked how they were featuring dishes inspired by another city, in this case Milwaukee. Being a native son of the Brew City I was of course rubbed the right way by such a tribute. I think this place has only been around for a year or so tops. It's not where I would go for dirt-cheap deals obviously but if you want a slightly nicer meal with some intriguing offerings, give it a try.
