First time going and was immediately greeted by the nicest man, who showed us where the menus were or offered for us to order at the tables where they'd bring us the food. We decided to head upstairs and check out the menu and order with our phones as downstairs was hopping. The restaurant is super cute with lots of stuff to look at. Laid back vibe with plants and decor. We sat at a high top with comfy chairs. I ordered a glass of sparkling rose- delicious! And the pickle poppers. Now- I didn't really know what to expect but omg...order these!! A pickle wrapped in an egg roll type wrapper with pimento cheese and fried served with this outrageous creamy dill sauce!? Idk just wasn't what i remembered it to be. The waffle fries are not worth $10. They were cold also. They were friendly when we walked in and explained everything. The Toast Pickle seems like a strange place to visit if you don't care for pickles. In fact, I may have come here a while ago if I had simply figured out to order and "hold the pickle"! We checked Yelp and studied the menu and headed up to Rockford for hopefully a good lunch. I was surprised to see The Toasted Pickle located in the same space that used to house an old favorite, "Ramona's Table". In fact, we were upset when they moved from East Grand Rapids to Rockford making it a longer drive for us. That was short lived as we probably ate at Ramona's a couple times a month. At The Toasted Pickle, you can order at the counter or scan a QR code at your table. Your order will then be delivered to you. In as much as I often customize, I ordered at the counter. My French Dip sandwich was really, really good. I ordered it without cheese and of course, no pickle. Meat was tasty, au jus was a perfect addition and the lightly toasted ciabatta garlic butter roll was the perfect anchor both structurally and taste-wise for this masterpiece. My wife ordered the Nashville Hottie. I'm a sucker for a great Nashville type chicken sandwich but I knew she would give me a taste or two so I stuck with the French Dip. There is no doubt I will order a Nashville Hottie on my next visit. Chicken rivaled some of the best I've enjoyed in Nashville. This sandwich is served topped with cole slaw and wonderful sauces and pickles on a brioche bun. I'm happy to see this location is home to another very good restaurant. Maybe I went into this expecting too much after hearing how great this place is. I was highly disappointed in this sandwich. The French Toast bread was very ehh. The meat and cheese inside was good, not necessarily great. The worst part for me was the Raspberry Sauce. I just did not like it. I also ordered a side of Sweet Potato Waffle Fries ($6). A little pricey, but there was a decent amount of them. O thought they were a little too salty, but otherwise good. I order a Raspberry Lemonade ($6). Again a little Pricey, but it was excellent. Definitely in my top 3 of Lemonade's. Lastly I got a piece of White Pine Cheesecake with Caramel sauce ($5). This may be the 1st cheesecake that at the worst a just very ehh and is instead just not good, almost horrible. I ended up throwing it away. The Pickle is a two story older building which has been heavily renovated. Seating is on both levels with a lovely outdoor patio (facing west, so afternoon sun plus most tables have umbrellas) overlooking a river and dam. Note that pretty heavy vehicle traffic on adjacent Bridge Street is not bucolic. Single bathrooms on each floor. Wood floors and walls are charming but make the noise level irritating. I suggest sitting on patio or the upper level to reduce noise. They offer a clever menu, focusing (of course) on the venerated processed cucumber. It's best to order at the counter after looking thru the menu to make sure you get what you want. Customers have an option to include a tip as part of the paying process; I decided to give a cash tip after the meal. Now, most important: how's the food and how's the value? Overall, we found the food to have "mixed" results. I was not impressed by the French Dip sandwich - it is, in essence, a pot roast sandwich with cheese and a "french onion" sauce. Okay but not what I think of being FD. Good jus on the side. Our group had the "shared" french fries and waffle fries; the shared order size is plenty for 3-4 people. Both were highly seasoned; if I go again, I will ask for them to be plain and I'll add seasoning at the table. Self-serve Coke machine is on first floor, so guests upstairs must refill after a trip down the stairs. Value, you ask? I'd say prices are a little high for the half sandwiches. Okay for full sandwiches, soda and sides. Alcoholic drinks also appear high. Fresh lemonade variety is a plus. Food is delivered by friendly staff to the table. Upstairs, extra supplies and take out containers are available. My wife and I visited shortly after they opened and were very disappointed with our food then. We thought they needed time to work through the quirks and decided to go back tonight. Honestly, it has gone down hill further. We watched our waitress from the upper level touch her nose and other parts of her face several times. Then she proceeded to pick up the bowl that our macaroni was going to be put in and proceeded to the kitchen to get our macaroni. On the way she picked her wedgie. After our food was plated she continued to laugh and joke with another staff member for about 5 minutes before she brought us our food. No one stopped by our table to ask us how our food was and several tables were left dirty for the entirety of our visit. On to the food...despite watching all of this we decided to get new utensils and take a few bites. I had the Tipsey Texan bbq and the bbq was dry. There was barely any sauce on it and the lettuce that was on it was just the brown ends not even the leafy part. My wife had the Get Pickled grilled cheese, and just like our first time said he could have made it better himself at home. Atmosphere would be nice, if it was clean. Aside from the tables not being cleaned and trays everywhere, we noted that the place just hadn't been deep cleaned in some time. There were cobwebs everywhere we looked and dust on every surface. My wife and I loved this place. Blueberry lemonade is on point. The grilled gooey cheese sandwich is fire highly recommend adding pesto. The Philly cheese sandwich was also fire. Only thing that sucks about this place is the way that you have to order. There's no personable experience. You don't talk to a staff member. You don't really have a waitress you just have someone to drop your food off at your table and leave and never be seen again. I also got a share size of fries, thinking my friend and her daughter would have some. Ordering online for pickup at their walk up window was really easy - they use the Toast online ordering site/app. You can also place a takeout order at the window. I checked in at the time they said it would be ready, but they told me I'd have to wait another 10-15 minutes. I was pretty hungry, but when I went back up 15 minutes later my food was ready (and I never got a text that said it was ready). Sometimes they turn off the online ordering option during peak times so be aware. The patio was full the entire time we were down by the river, but luckily there are lots of places to eat nearby if you can't snag a table. The half sandwiches at The Toasted Pickle are actually just a half of the sandwich, unlike some other spots where a "half" is just half of the meat/fillings. The "share" size of fries was huge - a brown lunch bag full of hot, crispy, and perfectly seasoned beer battered fries. I really enjoyed the chicken on the High Nooner - it was really crispy on the outside and juicy inside. I'd definitely get this sandwich again. Overall I had a good experience and would order from The Toasted Pickle in the future, but I'd probably send my order before heading to Rockford from Grand Rapids in order to have less of a wait. read more

We walked out to the patio and were lucky enough to get a table. First off it was clean, and the view was lovely. Ordering system worked perfectly, and every waitstaff person who brought something to our table asked if there was anything else we needed. You don't have an assigned server, but they have still figured out this way to kick your service experience up a notch. Everything we ordered arrived hot and delicious. My husband and I really wanted to try the Mac and cheese that gets such good reviews, so we split a sandwich and a Mac and cheese side, and an order of truffle fries. Very generous portions; we could not finish, and we sure wanted to, it was all delicious. Yet another really great idea to improve your experience = by the door out to the patio is a stand with a large water dispenser, extra condiments, and carry out boxes, so convenient! Only draw back is that parking in downtown Rockford is often not a fun thing, if you have a friend or family member with mobility issues there is a good chance you need to plan on dropping them off and picking them up depending on where you find parking. read more

From the start I thought the menu looked excellent (online). I liked the variety and quality of what I saw. I met a friend there already waiting for me on the deck. After joining him and chatting for a few minutes, he told me how to order, etc. I thought it was weird that a location/menu they have (on the river, nice outdoor deck, beautiful view) they have no waitstaff (patrons scan a QR code at the table, order, pay, food is delivered). We each scanned the QR code, ordered our food (w/in 30 seconds of each other), paid for it (and tip) and then continued our conversation. I ordered a fish sandwich, waffle fries and a beer. My friend ordered just a sandwich. FIRST of all, seriously...Ask me to tip when there is no waiter/waitress and do so before I've been served. Such a ridiculous system. I tip good service, not because you show up and breathe. Second, beer was delivered after about 10 minutes. My friend's sandwich after about another 10 minutes. Not mine. It took about 5 minutes before I insisted he start without me. It took another 5-10 minutes for my sandwich and fries to come. Sandwich was lukewarm, fries were lukewarm and soggy with about 1/4 of them stuck together. Since you have no waiter, you have a hard time voicing a problem. About 5 minutes after my initial bites I saw a server delivering to a table by us and tried to flag them, but they left so quick they never heard me. I finally thought, "Screw it, I got a friend here, I'm just gonna eat.". Third...I found out my food sat in the window for a long time. I even mentioned to the server how frustrated I was with our food being delivered 10+ minutes apart and she said something like, "Yea, I saw your food sitting in the window." What??? I wondered if my lack of tipping showed up somewhere and poor service was repayment. I doubt it, but I couldn't help but wonder (if I would have had good food/service, I would have left cash for a tip). After we finished our lunches and chatted for a bit more, a server stopped to pick up our plates and asked the question (I was not going to say anything, just never go back), "How was everything?" I proceeded to tell her everything. She said, "I'm so sorry, let me see what I can do", which I appreciated. She never came back. Again, what?? She even delivered food to a table past ours and had to walk by us and didn't even acknowledge us. Then, when we were leaving, she happened to be standing where we were walking. She looked at us and said, "I'm so sorry..." and then nothing. What a lost opportunity. I would love to have had a great experience and food, gone back with friends, bragged up the place, but now I never will and will tell others not to either. Wow. What a great place! The Nashville Hottie (I did mine with half chicken) is an absolute banger of flavor and texture. Gently spicy with just the right amount of sweetness. Truffle Fries are a solid side staple crispy and soft with an excellent pimento side. Also this mac & cheese is so simple yet so delightful! Toasted pickle knows how to deliver the staples with just a slight twist that delivers a heightened experience! Initially looks like it would be a cute place but servers seemed miserable, which gave the place an icky feel. My sandwich had a hair in it. I took it up to the counter to show them and ask for a new sandwich. The server said that she could t touch the sandwich because I had taken a bite and that I had to go back and get the tray that it was served on. No apology. Seemed odd since I had tipped them with my original order. I waited for 20 minutes, no sandwich. I inquired at the counter and the server said it had only been 5. Total BS. Updating my review from when they were new ! We've used them for takeout weekly and live the food ... great salads sandwiches and truffle fries ! The soups are tasty too !
