We came here for lunch and ordered their cob salad for $14.50, tri-tip sandwich and a side cesar salad combo for $12. I am very disappointed at the tri-tip sandwich as the beef is super chewy, lack of flavor, and just a terrible sandwich. The side cesar salad was just okay. My second time coming in before the lunch rush time, the first time the ladies making the salads kept on checking the menu to make sure they were adding the ingredients right, and fastly was rushed to pay. Not even a "Hello how are you? Is this your first time dining here?" Second time, same story and my peers and I decided to eat indoors, after a while a lady comes and starts cleaning our table and saying "alright now break is over" and basically pushing us out. The salad is decent. There are plenty of plant-based options that are clearly labelled, which is always appreciated. The owner was also incredibly friendly. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because it is very expensive! I think sweetgreen is better and at a similar price point. HOWEVER- the fresh foccacia at this place is next level. The Toss is a great new lunch spot serving soups and salads with a unique twist. It's a bright new space with soft, earthy, green tones behind tall glass windows which open up for indoor and outdoor seating. Staff is highly personable and appreciative of your business. They even serve wine and beer! They're generally pretty busy during lunch hour. So calling your order in ahead is an efficient way to go. I tried their Caesar salad and soup combo for the first time and loved it! In fact, it was so good I had it again the second time also. It's no regular Caesar salad. They put a bit of kale, roasted garlic and house-made sun-dried tomatoes in with their homemade dressing- definitely uniquely "The Toss". The soups are all very simple in taste with basic ingredients but hearty and tasty. I've had the chicken soup with bow tie pasta, beef vegetable with potato and black bean which I'd indulge in again. I finally broke out of my "Toss" Caesar salad mode this weekend and tried the "Siesta" salad with avocado, black bean, kale, tomato and more with the citrus jalapeno dressing. This salad was also very good but much heftier than the Caesar- especially with the added chicken. My honey enjoyed the Caesar with anchovies (fresh wirh bright shiny, silvery skin) and a Snowshoe beer which pairs well with the salads. I had my very first salad when I was in college, and the only reason I stomached it was because I was at a fancy dinner and I didn't want to offend the host when the salad plate came out. I had parents that never forced me to eat veggies, and as such I successfully avoided them for the first two decades of my life. Although my palate has certainly evolved (improved) over the years, I usually will avoid greenery at all costs. But sometimes your body just tells you that you need to lay off all the grease and meat, and it was on one of those days where I decided to check out The Toss. I was pleasantly surprised, there were a lot of good choices to choose from (even for a carnivore like me) and they give you pretty good portions. I made my own salad and added some salmon - everything tasted fresh and filling. If it were located anywhere else I might balk at paying $15 for a lunch salad but here in a sleepy part of San Carlos it seems to make sense. The service is over the top friendly and the space is open and airy, making the perfect setting for a sunny patio lunch. A great addition to the neighborhood and on my rotation whenever I decide to make like the hungry hungry caterpillar and eat a leaf to make up for all the other food choices of the week. read more

I love The Toss! While salad places tend to be pricey, what I get at The Toss is always worthwhile and more than enough for a meal. My favorites are the Corfu Salad and Carlito Salad. They don't skimp on any ingredients and dressing comes on the side. I don't eat a lot of meat, so one of the best parts is that you can order the salads without the meat on them! The only reason I cannot give this place a full five stars is because of the strand of hair I found in my salad :/ it was buried underneath, I'm happy that I noticed it before I took a huge bite. I know the hair wasn't placed on purpose, but it definitely threw me off and kind of made the salad unappealing to eat afterwards. My review is based on the lead management (unsure if she is the owner) and her interaction with her staff and customers. Normally we do pickup and the staff is super nice in comparison and so friendly. - One of the staff was trying to help my husband, lead management came over and audibly said something along the lines of "I don't care about that customer come and help this other one instead." That's rude to the customer and to her staff and puts her employee in a weird position to manage. - Manager was speaking to some of her staff in Spanish, I appreciate her trying, but then shortly after turned around to another customer said something along lines of "it (speaking Spanish) comes with the territory" which felt derogatory. They were recently closed early due to lack of staffing, I hope this is not related. I hope she reflects on some of these interactions and realizes people around are listening and you cannot treat the people who come to eat at your facility and those who help run it with disrespect. read more

It was a toss up between Sweetgreens and The Toss. They both specialize in salads, but I had never been to The Toss before. We ended up going to The Toss and it turned out to be the right decision. I got the Geisha bowl and it was huge. I had to toss my salad thoroughly to make sure I got every spot. It's by far the longest I've ever tossed a salad. I hate that such a normal phrase can be taken as dirty. I've tossed some many salads in my life and all in the literal sense. Why can't "toss a salad" just mean that and "lick an anus" just mean that. People should just say what they mean instead of speaking in code. It's not even like they're speaking in code anymore because most people know what the code is. We can't keep letting normal phrases turn into dirty ones. Then sooner or later everything we say can be taken dirty. Like eventually "clean the dishes" might mean "lick someone's ears". If "toss a salad" can turn into a dirty phrase, who knows what "clean the dishes" can turn into. Only time will tell, I'm scared for what the future holds. I've been here twice now, and both times I've left hungry and unsatisfied. The food to price ratio here is absolutely not worth it. I spent $14 to make my own salad and I honestly could've ate 2 of those. The amount you get is seriously the same amount you would get from a small salad at any other restaurant, let alone a premium salad spot. The sizing options are horrible too, so you can't even size up for more food without ordering another $14 salad. No thanks They seriously just need to replace their crappy containers while making the salad. The plastic bowls can't hold shit and you end up getting nothing but air. I can spend $9.75 (meat included) at Pluto's in Palo Alto and leave with more food than I put in my stomache. I would honestly rather make my own salad at Nob Hill or pickup 2-3 premade salads that are pretty equal in quality to The Toss. The setting and quality of food is not worth it to come here as a regular lunch spot. I'll have to keep looking for an everyday salad place near work. read more
