We stayed overnight in Ridgeland on a cross country move & needed some real food before we hit the road so I looked up restaurants near our hotel & we decided to go to The Trace Grill because it was close by & had good reviews. It by far exceeded our expectations! The place is super cute & had really pretty Christmas decorations. The staff was friendly & helpful & patient which was refreshing since we were tired & have a baby. We both got the 1 meat & 3 sides plate which is hard to believe cost less than $10. The atmosphere of this place is like a good old fashion BBQ place but instead of BBQ, its southern country food. When you see a bunch of over 60 seniors at a restaurant, you know the cooking is "old school" cool. I had the chicken fried steak which was very good but disappointed on the size of the portion but for the price, I can't really complain. The kids loved their food and the place was lively. Was only in the Ridgeland area for a week and came here twice. Was a bit hard to find since its not really visible off the main road. Reasonably priced meals and good bang for your buck if you get the blue plate deal. A very solid amount of meat on the ribs. Staff was very friendly. Pleasantly surprised by the fried catfish, the breading on it wasn't overwhelming, something that many places will do to their fried seafood. Only complaint if I were to really have one was the coleslaw was average. Would definitely come back here next time im near Jackson! read more

Order their blacken fish lunch combo all the time, they have a very good flavor, but TOO SMALL PORTION for their fish, it only comes with 1 piece fish for each order, imagine one piece Penn's size fish fillet in your plate. We recently moved to Jackson and already have dined her several times. My wiecalls it "comfort food" s most isn't terribly spicy. Only comment would be while the fried catfish was excellent, a friend we brought with this week ordered a blackened chicken dinner and got a blackened catfish dinner instead. So I just had the absolute worst experience here. I have heard great things about this place since I moved and started my new job. I went and ordered a fried catfish plate with 2 sides. I brought the food back to work to eat during my lunch break and when I opened my plate I had two of the smallest catfish pieces I had ever seen definitely not worth 12 bucks. I mean it could have been considered a kids meal. My toddler eats more than what they gave me. I called to speak with the manager and he was literally on the phone yelling at me. Being extremely combative. He told me they cut one filet in half and then fry it. This should definitely be told to customers and when I said that the manager told me he doesn't have to tell me or customers anything. Instead of just apologizing and saying what can I do in a nice manner he yelled and screamed what do you want me to do. I will never spend my money there again because how you treat people matters. How we talk to one another matters. Always choose kindness in every situation. I didnt get a refund or any comp for the wasted money nor could I drive the food back over as I went on my lunch break. First of all the restaurant is in a new location. Very casual/homey atmosphere. I ordered the Blackened Redfish with slaw and fried green tomatoes. I realize this is not their speciality and I have seen good reviews about their other items. With that said, the slaw was the best thing on my plate. I want to start off by saying I'm NOT from Ridgeland or even Mississippi. I'm from Louisiana. I came here with coworkers who said this is one of the best places to eat in the Jackson area. The first time I had a hamburger steak blue plate and the food was AMAZING! It was so good I wanted to lick the plate clean. I came back by myself on a Saturday, but this time I tried the Blackened Chicken with fried okra, Mac & cheese, turnip greens, and onion rings. I was beyond disappointed with the second meal. The blackened chicken isn't really "blackened" chicken. It's black from being burnt and covered in pepper. The Mac & cheese was alright but not good enough to bring me back. The turnip greens were also covered in pepper, and tasted more like yams than greens. I'm assuming the pepper is used so heavily to make the food taste "spicy," but it was nasty, and mind you I'm from Louisiana so I know what spicy should taste like. The onion rings literally had no flavor. The fried okra was good but it was soggy by time I got the food. So long story short, the food is a hit or miss. Outstanding place with real nice people running it. They actually just opened a larger, new place right next door to the old one (the old Alumni House). I went and was really impressed with the size and how nice it is. My personal favorites are the burgers on jalapeno cheddar buns, onion rings, and blue plates. They have tons of meat and vegetable choices that they offer everyday, and you can get them at night also. The owner and his family have been in the restaurant business for 30+ yeas and it shows- they run a very tight operation. Update: Just had dinner there last Friday night when I was in town and it was awesome as always. I got a full rack of dry ribs with the sauce on the side, with fried green tomatoes and turnip greens (which were fresh, not out of a can). The new facility is much larger than the old log cabin, seating probably around 150-200 ppl I would guess. I had the hamburger steak blue plate with turnip greens (fessh) and black-eyed peas, cornbread and sweet tea. My wife settled on the vegetable plate and had their famous fried green tomatoes. Our bill was around 17 bucks which was quite a value. The same family has been running this place for like 15 years and they do a wonderful job. The Trace Grill (along with Two Sisters) is a very respectable way to sample southern cooking. The bake fresh buns for their burgers like a Jalapeno-Cheddar that are pretty tasty. Their BBQ sauce isnt great so if you get ribs you may want to try the dry ribs. They do a pretty big spread of plate lunch options. Get your country friend steak & 3 sides to catfish, fried green tomatoes, fried shrimp, homemade chili, salads, red beans and rice, meatloaf, etc.. The bread pudding is ok..kind of average. Visited Trace Grill on our way back to Fort Worth after vacation in Florida. The young lady at the counter was very polite. We ordered our entree and 2 sides. I had the grilled pork chop with greens and mac n cheese, my wife had the same with fried okra and mashed potatoes and gravy. The chop had nice grill marks an good flavor, although on the dry side. The thing I didn't like at all were the greens which were very sweet. Even the addition of pepper sauce didn't tone down the sweetness. The mac n cheese was cheesy, but unremarkable. My wife enjoyed the fried okra and mashed potatoes with her chop. This is a fast casual place; order and pay at the counter, get your drink, silverware and napkins and find a place to sit.
