Crab cakes- good but "not super crabby", I was told the mash potatoes was the best part. Shrimp and strawberry salad- I heard it was yum but didn't try it. Looked refreshing! Smoked salmon and fettuccini- super cheesy, heavy, and huge. Smoked salmon was hard to find but had a good smokiness when I did find a speck. Truthfully a 3 1/2 rating but service so welcoming I bumped it up. We stopped in at 1:00 on a Monday to try this cute spot we'd seen last year when doing the Gondola boat ride in same parking area. We order a 3-pc halibut/chips $15, a bowl of clam chowder and 2 soda cans. Came to $31 before tip. You order at the trolley window and you pick food up there when ready. They have covered and uncovered seating area very convenient. Order took about 10-12 minutes. Glad we ordered 3 pc fish as they were very small portions, a different coating...tasted like corn/masa, not too heavy but a bit gummy on inside. For fresh halibut it wasn't a stand out unfortunately. Ample fries ( crinkle cut) that were crispy, like the sprinkle of herb (parsley?), although we smelled a slightly fishy smell unclear if fries cooked in same fish oil, tarter good. We only had a taste of the chowder because we find it nearly impossible to enjoy properly with a small plastic spoon. One ends up spilling more down the front of you then consuming. We brought home, it was nice and creamy (butter added richness) and appreciated not tasting like bacon or being a chunky potato soup. I would order again, $8 fair price for bowl. Omgg one of the freshest salads I've had and the salmon was slightly - ever so slightly undercooked which I like!!!!! Grilled to perfection and the vinaigrette really compliments the salad. I couldn't find any decent places to try in the area except for this, and I don't regret it. The Trolley is a really fun experience with nice shaded outdoor seating. On a sunny day, it's the highlight of Gig Harbor. The seafood is actually fresh--I was quite surprised--but the way it's cooked and prepared is just ok. I would recommend the fried calamari, but not the fish and chips. The clam chowder is kinda milky but ok. Also, you can just appreciate the fact you can still get $2.50 drinks here. read more

Every time I visit the downtown marina area in Gig Harbor I've been meaning to try the Trolley @ the Boatyard. It's aesthetically cute and the trolley concept alone draws you in with curiosity. It's only outdoor seating, but they do have some umbrellas and a small tented area for the wet and cold season. I ordered the Cuban-style hamburger with a side salad and my husband ordered a fish n' chips with halibut. The staff are also friendly and it gives a welcoming small town restaurant vibe. I opted for a side salad instead of fries, and I wish they'd put the salad separate from the burger. It made the salad hot and soggy. I didn't end up finishing the salad. The burger was spectacular though! You can have the meat cooked how you want (pink, some pink, no pink) and it comes stacked with meat and toppings. I wish I would have asked to cut it in half, too. The meat really leveled up the burger, seasoned and cooked well. My husband enjoyed the halibut, but hoped the pieces would have been a bit larger. They had a good batter and flavor. Wait one minute! You can get the most delicious bowl of clam chowder from an old trolley car set down from the main drag near the bay? Even in the blustery weather we were warm and cozy under the tent and served the best clam chowder we imagined. Our server (Tammy?) was quite delightful and so welcoming. Stopped in while staying on nearby Raft Island. We were looking for the Marketplace Grille because we ate there last time we were vacationing in Gig Harbor. After some research online, we found the restaurant closed, but the same owners own The Trolley @ the Boatyard. They have two designated parking spaces directly in front. You order at the trolley, and then they call your name when it's ready. We ordered the steamer clams and halibut fish & chips. Both were really good. The steamers were fresh and came with melted butter and extra broth. The halibut fish & chips came with perfectly seasoned crinkle cut fries and yummy tartar sauce. The wife and I stopped by The Trolley for lunch on a Saturday and fortunately it wasn't actively raining so we were able to eat on one of the outdoor benches. I ordered the fried oysters and the wife ordered the fish and chips. Service was very friendly, which makes it difficult to have to tell you that the food was not good. The oyster breading was terrible, the mashed potatoes were undercooked, and the fish and chips weren't good according to the wifey. Their caesar salad was ok but I would not recommend either of the dishes we tried. read more

We have eaten here before a couple years ago (fish and chips) and enjoyed it enough that we decided to return on this trip. The woman working the window was new to us, but very friendly and accommodating. We ordered fish and chips, calamari and chowder. The fish was not only terrible, but it actually smelled faintly like incense...which was weird. The batter around the fish was soggy and didn't seem fully cooked...but the flavor was just weird and not good. The calamari was pretty much the same. Just not good. It's a shame because it's an easy location to walk to and you can sit outside at picnic tables...casual and simple. But not worth it if the food is that bad. First, I have to start with the positive. The woman working the front counter was an absolute delight. She was upbeat, vibrant, and super positive the whole time through our visit. However, with a smile and only 1 table in the restaurant ahead of us, we were told by her that our order containing 2x fish & chips plates and a Crabby Patty burger would take 45-minutes on a Thursday night. We get that things happen and the kitchen can get backed up. But there was nothing visually happening for customers to see why there'd be a 45-minute wait. The restaurant appeared to be slow during our visit. For the halibut we ordered for our fish & chips, they were extremely small pieces, like the size of Jo-Jo's at a grocery store deli counter. The fries were well seasoned and the tartar sauce was good. But for the price we paid for each plate, we expected more or better. It just wasn't great for the money spent. As for the kids menu Crabby Patty, my son didn't like it and wanted my fish instead. So I gave him 2 pieces of my fish and ate his burger. For what it's worth, fish & chips is not a part of the kids menu. It should be, but simply isn't. But, back to the burger, I thought it was cooked nicely, was juicy, and delicious. My son ordered it plain, so my only struggle with it was my son lacking a sense of adventure. But again, the beef was good, the cheese was good, and I enjoyed the bun too. Between the wait time and the food we received, it was a theme at our table that we'd likely not return. Again, the lady working the front counter was an absolute delight. We all loved her. But between the price we paid and the food received, this was not a win in our book. It's not that we'd not return because the food was bad. For what it was, we ate it. This is a great place to stop and enjoy good food in the midst of a stroll along Gig Harbor's downtown waterfront. This family owned business is fantastic! Great spot to have some flavorful fresh seafood and they have other options such as jerk chicken and sandwiches. They also sell ice cream! The flavor of the crab cakes I ordered were well seasoned and very fresh and crispy on the bottom. Nice and light. The star of the show was the mango chutney that comes on the side it pairs nicely with the dish! So much flavor I was also very impressed with the chowder as well. It's Gluten free and you can tell it's made fresh! Im very impressed with this business as Carlene was so friendly she's one of the owners of this spot along with her husband. Just had fish and chips at the trolley- to my surprise and joy - it is operated by the former market place grill owners -the menu is similar and still incredibly delicious! My partner had a shrimp and avocado salad and was equally as enthusiastic about the freshness and subtle essence of the dressing. The fish and chips had a delicate crust and crunch that was particularly tasty to me, as I prefer a lighter batter. The venue is interesting, as it is outside.
