Don't recommend. I came to use the restroom. First thing she said was "no" I told her about the "restroom for customers only" sign I saw outside. she said she still doesn't have a restroom. I said "I can't buy a cookie or a drink?" (That makes me a customer) and she said no again. So I said "well what makes me a customer" she said anything more than $5. I walked out. I ordered broccoli beef, chkn chop suey and orange chicken so this is a review of only those. I first want to say that the flavor in everything was yummy, but...The meat was also tough in everything. I'm used to eating tender meat from asian cuisine, but not such luck. The kung pao had not many peanuts and about 5 chunks of bell peppers in a full container of meat so it made it a bit hard to digest with only meat, so even though it was tasty it sat in the frig until it was thrown out. The chop suey too cld use more sprouts & the chicken had gristle and didn't have Chinese texture. I probably won't eat here again with Dragon 99 open. read more

Ordered chicken fried rice. Courteous service from older lady behind counter. Rice came out very fast. Bland. White. No flavor! Ratio rice to other ingredients, meager. Loads of rice. Most bites had egg shell. Gross to crunch on - imagine - ugh. Flavorless compared to all other restaurants. No soy sauce or napkins or chili on tables or offered. Lady behind counter spent all her time literally on her phone. Never before needed to ask for basics. Super bare as in zero on every table. Outside dirt on chairs and tables from open door. The popcorn chicken you can see is so over-fried, the shrimp egg rice is supposed to half liquid type of egg but of course over cooked again. I have eaten at quite a lot of Chinese Restaurants and I can immediately tell if I really like one. Upper House is my favorite local Asian restaurant. I've lived nearby for years but only tried it a few months ago. It's now become my family go to for take out cravings. Their lunch specials are nicely portioned and priced. All the food is delicious and the quality is outstanding. Their customer service (back when I was able to dine in) is also wonderful. This is a small family run business and their hospitality and kindness always made our dine in experience great. I personally love their fish with black bean sauce, walnut shrimp, shrimp fried rice, and tomato beef dishes, but you can't go wrong with anything from their menu. read more

Convenient place to go for some quick Chinese food and a drink/tea. We started with the cucumber salad, and it was pretty standard. The braised beef noodle soup was okay, although the soup could have been hotter with more vegetables. The meet was tender, and I appreciated that they put the pickled veggies on the side. We also tried the roasted pork fried rice which was tasty - not too salty and not too much fat on the pork. There could have been more meat (only small pieces). The taro milk tea was just so-so, and the peach tea was a tad sweet, even though she already lessened the sweetness of it. Good amount of seating, and new, modern decor. Stumbled on this place and glad we did! We had to get food to go because of Covid and typically it seems food and portion sizes lack at most restaurants on to go. Far from that for this place and can't wait to dine in when craziness is over! We ordered the lunch specials which they claimed are smaller portions but we got a lot of food. Kung Pao chicken, Fish Filet with Black Bean Sauce (this one was my favorite), Curry Shrimp all with steamed rice, hot and sour soup and egg flower soups, and Coconut Milk Tea. Loved how they sealed tops of our waters and my drink. Service was fast and reasonable prices for all the food you get. Only thing I wish they had was better to go containers as they use the standard styrofoam boxes and they were so full the sauce leaked all over the bottom of the bag. read more

Me and my girlfriend were in utter shock when Hi Family on foothill went out of business, but I am so glad that Upper House offers the same if not more! I just discovered this restaurant. We had been looking for a local Chinese restaurant since we used to go to the one in the same location, which had closed. Just to check it out, I ordered a vegetable dish with tofu(I'm vegetarian) and was pleased with the fresh vegetables that weren't over cooked. We'll definitely return to try more of the menu. This little gem seems so out of place in Claremont, but it's got to be one of my faves. Reasonable prices, delicious food, clean restaurant, and good service. You can't ask for more than that at this price. I usually come here for the mocha milk tea, but have to grab an order of the wonton in spicy sauce every time. It tastes like Din Tai Fung but you get 10 pieces for half the price! The wonton here was filled with shrimp and pork. We've been trying out many other items on the menu and so far have not been let down at all. It's not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but it's great value for the price you're paying. read more

I regret not taking pictures. Coworkers wanted to go here, so we walked from the office on over. Food was delicious! I ordered a lunch special, Fish with Black Bean Sauce, which at the time of this review runs for $9.95. It came with three hefty scoops of hot white rice (short grain for those of you that must know the type of rice specifically). It also came with an option of hot & sour soup or egg flower soup. The actual entree itself came with an okay amount of fish, not plentiful but not scarce either, and it was cooked in black bean sauce mixed with soy sauce, oil, some chili seeds it looked like, finished with red and green bell peppers. The flavor was authentic, but I wish there was more fish (the actual star of the entree!) Then again, I did order the lunch special version of the dish, so it probably is meant to be smaller in portion size. Typical styrofoam container, so for those of you environmentally conscious people, this might not be the place for you. But then again, when I think of a place to get authentic Chinese food to-go, the first thing that comes to mind is not reusable, recyclable stuff, but cheap! They also serve boba here, but I didn't think to order it until I was done with my meal and wanted to get something to wash what I just ate down. The restaurant itself is located in a cozy-sized shopping center, however around 12 noon I did not see the place packed with cars, so from a congestion standpoint, it should be easy to find parking. read more

I finally found a Chinese restaurant around here that satisfies my inner Chinese foodie!!! As a bonus, The Upper House does "NOT" use "grease" as its main ingredient. This place is very clean and the staff is extremely friendly and quick with service! All the dishes and drinks that I've tried are delicious and have much flavor. FYI- The War Wonton Soup tastes fresh with crisp vegetables and meats. Once again, not greasy. Everything comes in large portions enough to share and the main dishes usually come with a side of steamed white rice (which I usually take home). It's a great place for families, medium size groups or a table just for two! Tip-They also offer carry out. Which is convenient when you're sick/lazy. Family owned and so so good! Cute little place in a shopping plaza. They have amazing portions, family style, and the food is fresh. came here with a friend after hearing many reviews about the upper house. We ordered the egg and shrimp over rice, niu rou mian (beef noodle soup) and the mapao tofu. the niu rou mian: classic taiwanese/Chinese food dish. the broth was extremely flavorful and does not have that greasy/oily feeling that most niu rou mians tends to have. Came with 3-4 cuts of beef; very tender -- my only complaint is that the noodles seem to have been overcooked. They were overly soft for my taste and lacked the chewiness and elasticity of more al dente noodles. egg and shrimp over rice: eggs were super fluffy and creamy which I thoroughly enjoyed. Mapao tofu: another classic Chinese food dish as also very yummy. Not particularly memorable, but definitely not bad. If you're craving it, I would definitely order. Upper house is pretty decent for asian food in the Claremont area. The prices themselves (abt $9-10 per entree) was good considering the portions were a good size. read more

This place was really delicious. My fiance and I had their Walnut shrimp, Wonton soup, Wontons in chili sauce and Chinese style cucumbers. All of these dishes were really delicious. I'm still on a quest to find good, authentic Chinese food outside of Alhambra and Monterey Park. Sorry to report that the quest still continues as I haven't found it yet. The most positive thing about this restaurant is the friendliness and attentiveness of the wait staff. It all kinda falls apart after that. The braised string beans were the most flavorful of the four dishes we ordered. They tasted fresh with lots of garlic. The chicken lo mein was bland as was the wontons in chili sauce dish. The orange chicken was heavily breaded with very little chicken under the batter. I think that the food is catered to the demographic in the area so that authentic Chinese flavor as you'd find in the San Gabriel Valley is unfortunately missing. read more
