The fish crumbles to the touch. It is moist and crispy. Delicious does not do this fish justice. This is a SMALL place, so you have to keep your eyes peeled for the awesome pie-sill door and the bench of awesomeness. I wish I could say more about this spot! The day before Thanksgiving and it's 84 degrees in LA, so my husband and I spend the day at Venice Beach. Looking for a snack at 4:30pm, we notice a little hole-in-the-wall called The Wee Chippy. It looks British and cute. Debating whether we should get some fries, a couple of obviously stoned dudes sitting on the bench outside the walk-up window offer their unsolicited opinion: "These are the BEST fries in the world. Get 'em." (Ah yes, ten minutes ago, it was 4:20.) We order the chips with spicy curry salt and the black truffle mayo. HOLY CRAP, the stoners are right... These fries are AMAZING! Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and the curry salt gives them a kick without being overpowering. Truffle mayo is the perfect accompaniment. We sit on the bench after the stoners take off, and eat our delicious fries as we watch the sun set over the beach. One of my most favorite moments in the 15-plus years I've lived in LA. I had a bit of a mixed experience at The Wee Chippy during my Friday afternoon visit that came down to the good and bad aspects of my order of fries. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Like a lot of the nearby units, The Wee Chippy is not much more than a simple food stand, but the service is fast and friendly. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? I was admittedly a bit put off when my order for a small portion of fries came to a whopping $4.50, but any fears of being ripped off were immediately alleviated when I saw this portion. This heaping cup of massive fries was at the very least an entire potato chopped up and fried, and could have served as a full meal in and of itself. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? So it's here that things fell apart a bit. First and foremost, the sea salt on these fries was excellent and well portioned; but it was the fries themselves that fell a bit short. Every single fry was perfectly well done and crunchy on one end, but distractingly soggy and limp on the other end, making for what was literally a split experience. Consistency is key when it comes to french fries, and the consistency simply wasn't here. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? If The Wee Chippy can bring about some consistency to their fries this will be a no brainer for the famous side dish here in Los Angeles. Until then, they're just a-OK. No Star Granted. read more

It's nestled into one of the small alley's on the boardwalk and operates out of a literal hole in the wall across from the deli. The fries are made to order and are basically a potato put through a fry cutter resulting in big thick fries. Therefor, I'm going to have high expectations, for this particular dish. It was a super thin piece of fish, that was heavily breaded, and fried hard. It was also very smelly, and not very appetizing. Along with mostly brown parts of the fish. I'm not sure which fish they use, but it's definitely not a higher quality of white fish. Maybe something that was caught, 100yds from their window. You get to choose the flavor of your fried from a pretty long list abbr you can mix and match. I mixed garlic (fresh chopped garlic!) And curry. Turned out pretty yummy. You can also choose dipping sauces from a list. I got chipotle mayo (yum!) and truffle (so-so). There was also a side of coleslaw. As for the taste. Pretty darn good. Truffle fries are great, especially with parmesan and garlic toppings. I got the chipotle mayo and chipotle ketchup and they're both delicious, though I prefer the mayo. Fish is pretty good. Comes with tartar sauce. I think my favorite part is the packaging. If you get the fish and chips combo ($12) your food comes in a takeout box on a bed of old/fake newspaper. The store name is stamped on the top of the box too. Super cute! Fries are $4 - $7 depending on size and if you get regular/truffle. Extra toppings and condiments are 50 cents or $1. This place is so cute and charming but the custom fries are awesome! They have custom salts in so many varieties you are bound to make a combo you'll love. I was ready to fight the seagulls and pigeons because I wasn't losing a single fry. Everything was made fresh and I really enjoyed the battered fish!
