They didn't order my windows for over 12 weeks. I had 2 broken single pane windows and we had to get all the way through winter with them broken. They ordered the windows after I called to check in a delivery date so we had to wait 24 weeks from when we got a quote to when the windows were installed. Once they were installed they were sloppy. Do not use this business. Their communication is poor and their timelines are a joke. read more

I had windows installed about 19 years ago. Window Specialist promised a "lifetime warranty", right there in the contract. Our windows are fogging. And I'm quite alive, enjoying my lifetime. WS came out to look. They refused to honor the warranty, and essentially dared us to sue them. "Do what you have to do", they said. We are a law office. We know what that means, and we know how to do what they've invited us to do. Probably you don't. If I didn't, I would steer clear of these guys. They are bad news. A warranty is a promise. Let me just be clear that I did not use them for anything yet; however, their office manager Keith who monitors Yelp requests is super helpful! I have some broken glass on our house so I sent out a bunch of quote requests on Yelp. All the other window companies responded saying they don't do small jobs like mine, and that's it. Due to very strong winds last November, we had to replace the window in our hallway, so we contacted The Window Specialist. Keith came out about a day later, and gave us 3 quotes (1 for just that window, another for replacing 3 windows, and a 3rd quote for replacing all our old windows upstairs). We went forward with the 3 window quote, and about a month later, his team came and replaced the 3 windows. Keith was very fast in replying to e-mails, and his service was excellent. I didn't encounter any problems or issues that some other reviewers had. As for the windows, we're very happy. They look great, function very well, and are a vast improvement over our old windows. Unfortunately the customer service here is very poor. Barb, the office manager fails to respond to emails. I sent two emails asking for an adjusted quote and even called the person who visited and let them know that Barb was not responding to my emails. A couple years ago, I had gotten some quotes for window replacement, but no one could seem to talk to me about the specifics of how the work would be done, trade offs between this window or that, what we should expect from the whole process --- basically the people that came out could only give a quote for some windows, not explain why, and that was it. For such a big purchase, we didn't feel comfortable without understanding more. Fast forward to this year and we thought we'd give it another shot. Keith and the Window Specialist team were an entirely different experience. First, they have a great Windows 101 guide on their website that gave infinitely more information than I had gotten previously. I gave WS a call and Keith came out, spent an hour with me answering all kinds of questions (and more questions, and more questions), and helped put together several different configurations of window quotes that met various needs. While enjoying a pot of green tea at work in comes an email from the apartment building I live in, "Next week we're going to have contractors in your unit replacing windows. They'll be in Tuesday, all day." I was not amused, you see I live on the 4th floor and the idea of me being windowless for 8 hours lead to horrible thoughts of my cats tumbling to their doom. Of course being the responsible pet owner that I am I decide to take the day off and hang out, make sure my cats stay firmly inside where they need to be. I'm bummed, blowing a vaca day for friggen windows. Can we at LEAST push the appointment to Friday? My building checks in with The Window Specialists, they say no problem, Friday it is. Well that's good news. Another email arrives later that day, "Since you're in a bind they say they can take care of it in 4 hours, that way you only have to be there a half day." Even better news. At the end of the entire ordeal they were here for a grand total of 2.5 hours. GREAT news. Compared to the original 8 hour guesstimate, that's amazing. Now I can enjoy the rest of my day off! The team of 5 was like a whirlwind of window replacing prowess. Icing on the cake? They brought up screens at my request, no more fear of cats out the window. The windows look superb. How they did such careful work in such a short amount of time I know not, but I guess that's what makes them the Window Specialists right? Great service and end result, packaged with friendly and open demeanor. They removed all the protective plastic that was laid down, vacuumed up the mess, and left everything just as it was upon their arrival. I normally don't write reviews the day of. In 2018 we had The Window Specialist (TWS) install 82 replacement windows into an apartment building in San Francisco. I posted back then but the owner of the property was threatened with a law suit by TWS. I was, but no longer a resident property manager. Here are some facts from a negative experience. 1.) TWS crew came and measured for an 82 window replacement install and after measuring just a few windows Keith decided to order all the same size window for each of the window types through out the building. As it turned out and you will notice in the photos, some windows were too short for the frame and caulking filler was used. 2.) Windows were delivered by semi truck and with our delivery were 16 additional windows. Keith Perry was counting the windows being brought into the garage for our project and at the same time telling his crew to put these 16 additional mystery windows at the front of the garage. At the same time he tells me he'll figure out later where they go. As it turned out TWS used our garage without permission or acknowledgment and knowingly stored 16 windows for one of their other job locations. I caught them in the act of loading these 16 windows into their truck weeks later which is why they were placed in the front of the garage for easy removal. 3.) This window project was supposed to be a 10 day job. It lasted nearly 3 months causing many issues with our paint crew who were scheduled to start after the window install was completed. Needless to say, windows and paint overlapped each other and it was messy! 4.) There was a lack of leadership from the top down. Two crew members each had an assistant. Daniel was wonderful and always showed up on time for work. I forget the lazy second crew member's name who often didn't show up and when he did, was confrontational with attitude. 5.) I called in a representative (Pat White) from Anderson Windows for advice who informed TWS management they needed to install a horizontal metal piece at the bottom of the windows as noted in the photo. 6.) We wanted replacement double pane Anderson windows to block out more outdoors noise than the old windows offered. We ended up with triple pane windows due to TWS selling us windows that did not meet historical guidelines. We did not pay extra for the triple pane, but we also did NOT block out any road noise. 7.) I came across the Window Specialist website when trying to understand why our window vendor (another company) told us to go with LowE3 windows that are intensely tinted and have made our home very dark. Keith wrote a wonderful blog post about how LowE2 windows are allowed and preferable for homes in coastal regions like SF and Alameda (where we live). I contacted him to get his opinion about whether it might be worthwhile to change the glass in our new windows. Echoing what others have said, initial communication was good, and Jim seemed like a nice guy who knew his stuff when he came to take measurements, but it's now been over two months of trying to get quotes and estimates with little to no response. Perhaps this is because we're most interested in a new door and this isn't their specialty? I've mainly been in contact with Barb (office assistant) and she seems to have just stopped responding to my emails. The communication was initially good, however, after having Jim come over for an estimate, I can't get a quote to save my life. Appointment on Monday, was told I'd get an email no later than Tuesday. Tuesday comes and goes and nothing. I reach out on Wednesday, get an apology and told I'd get the quote by that evening. I got nothing. Called Saturday to follow up and asked what was up because I felt like I was trying chase him (Jim) down, only to be told they are in fact really busy. I upgraded my living room and bedroom windows to double pane and they ordered and installed them. Pros: very competitive quote, they gave me the best price. I called 5 different companies to compare. My windows have held well against the recent storms (no leaking) and it's been about a month. Cons: Communication wasn't the best. You have to take initiative in asking for an estimate and scheduling. They aren't the most responsive. For my estimate they said my window installation would take 1 day. It ended taking 2.5 days and both days, the contractor showed up very late (more than 2 hours late). read more

I need new windows. My house was built in 1937 and I live on a busy street so there is a noise problem and the drafts from the windows make the house cold in winter and the sunlight makes it hot in the summer. Not an uncommon problem but I have 36 windows and I'd replace them all if I could afford to. I contacted the Window Specialist to give me a quote. They were pretty timely in coming out to measure and estimate. We picked colors and discussed different brands. The quote was pretty typical providing nicer Pella windows with painted aluminum cladding on wood with double pane gas filled glass. The cost was about $1000/window installed (inserts mostly). The problem with this company is that they didn't follow up on the quote. I told them that I needed a few months for my refinance to come through and then I'd be ready. When that happened I emailed WS but never heard back from them. I decided to call them. I spoke to the original sales rep and told him that I was ready to take the plunge ($6000 for one bedroom, yikes!). He said he wanted to come out to remeasure which I thought was a great idea. We set up a time and I rushed home early from work to meet him. He never showed. He did call though to say that he was tied up on a big job in the city and said that every existing job was his first priority to make sure it was installed properly. I thought to myself, 'hey, I like that!'. Then I remembered... when he came for the first estimate he was late and used the very same excuse. Hmm... He said he'd call back to reschedule. I never heard from him again. Oh well... they lost a sale AND they got a review. I'm doing the windows myself. I'm not for hire. read more

Called about a repair job, and he told me to text him the details and he'd call me back. Sent him a text with all the info, including the fact that I'd like to repair the window if possible and not replace it. Never heard back. Called again days later, and he acted like he never received my text (same number), and we scheduled a visit. He met my husband at the house, took one look at the window and said "We don't do this work. I only do replacements." He told my husband he'd recommend someone who DOES do this work (would have been nice to know that he didn't in the first place after the multiple calls and texts - would have saved everyone a lot of time). He sent us a quote for a replacement window and after we followed up, he still hasn't responded with any recommendations for window repair people. I know people are busy right now, but I'm disappointed with the lack of focus and follow through. 3 stars for the fact that he actually came to my house to look at the window. read more

I cant update my star rating more than 2 stars because my previous experience is what it was. Got some windows replaced on my house (mostly new Marvin windows, and one Amerimax picture window in a closet). Jim was more than an hour late for the estimate (which wasn't a good start and for which I've dinged them a star), but the quote came in promptly and was lower than competitors'. My husband and I are in the process of purchasing a home. We are first time home buyers. Everything was moving smoothly until we found water damage under one of the windows and carpet of the room. We suddenly began panicking because we were only given 24 hrs to decide whether or not we would take the house. By this time, we already had four inspectors check the property - the termite inspector, home inspector, handyman, and roof doctors. No one could figure out the cause of this water damage. I frantically searched the internet and found Window Specialists on Yelp and decided to give them a try. I sent out an email to Tom and Jim (names & emails found on website) at around 11 pm at night. We had already given up by this time and figured there was no way we could get this done in such short notice. But by the time my alarm woke me up in the morning, I received an email from Tom! It was amazing and I was super thrilled to have someone answer so quickly. I just couldn't believe that all the positive reviews on Yelp could actually be true. His email informed me that this problem should not be a deal breaker on the house. It comforted me that an expert actually gave me honest advice rather than, like the rest of the inspectors, tried to sell me additional services on "fixing" the problem. I called Jim when I got into work and he quickly picked up. He was already at a job but assured me that he would squeeze me into his booked schedule. By now, I was very thankful for their understanding of our situation. Within a couple hours, he let me know what time he would meet me. And when the time came, not only did he arrive early, but he spent a great amount of time trying to solve the mystery. He spent a lot of time with us running multiple experiments repeatedly, analyzing the entire window area, and thoroughly explaining his findings to us. Jim was very kind and thorough. As a matter of principle, I don't write bad reviews on Yelp - but I feel compelled to report that I also had the experience others have mentioned, where we successfully scheduled a home visit, had a great walk-through, and were told we'd get a quote over email, and then... radio silence. I called the office after two weeks, left a voicemail, and received no reply... a second voicemail got me a call from the owner, who was very friendly and let me know some staff were out for personal reasons that week - But it's now been a month with no word at all. They did a fantastic job on replacing all the windows in my house in 2002. It made a huge difference in sound reduction (live near the freeway) and in being able to keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. The windows have held up perfectly, open and close easily (good fit) and have never leaked. Last year one of my screens fell out of the window and was damaged by the rose bush it landed on. Tom (the owner, I think) came out and replaced it immediately at no cost to me. I later discovered and told him that it hadn't been a defect in the screen after all, but rather a defective neighborhood cat who I caught jumping on the window sill, grabbing onto the screen, which then pulled loose and cat and screen ended up in the roses. He laughed and said he'd suspected it might be cat-related damage since he'd seen my cats in the window. He didn't mind fixing it anyway. read more

Late in 2009 I needed to replace all my aluminum windows and take advantage of a tax credit for double-paned ones. This company was one of several on my list to check out and for some reason I thought they had a showroom (they don't). So I'm a block away from their office and call and say I can't find it. The amazing Jim Ford was very kind in the face of cluelessness and invited me to come in and talk, which I did. This guy was in the middle of a zillion-dollar project and I have seven (7) windows, but he took the time to talk to me and show me options and give me a ballpark price. The price sounded fine so I asked him to come over and see the job. So I hired them. I had medical stuff coming up at the beginning of the year and needed everything done before January 4. Jim and his crew, plus Tom, got everything done in time and did an excellent job. Get this: some of my supplies were in Livermore or somewhere and to save time, Jim chose to drive there in hideous weather and pick them up. As far as I can tell, their work is flawless, the staff were bang on time to work, and the project was completed comfortably in time. I'd chosen unfinished wood and when I was up and about covered everything in 3 coats of clear stain. They look good, definitely help with sound and temperature, and do all the things tilt-pack windows are supposed to do. Recently I unearthed a pile of sealant tubes that I was supposed to have them come back and apply, so I'll call and ask how to proceed. Updating my review from below from a lackluster one star to 4. Keith has been brought on to improve the process and service. Under his wing, he has been super response, attentive and a pleasure to work with. Keith has called back, followed up, and ensured that we are pleased with the overall experience. Fingers crossed that this business with turn around and thrive. Rating a four because of historical experience but since talking to Keith it has been a 5 star experience. ------------------------------------ Not very happy with the service level with Jim Ford. We ordered windows from him last year that took forever to arrive (despite him promising that they would be delivered within a week) in addition scheduling to have them installed took forever as well. Also our invoice for the windows never came. We actually called them to remind of our outstanding payment. To make it even better, our names were spelled incorrectly on the bill sent to us. Once installed, our side windows were warped so they never fully closed. We called Jim and left him a voicemail that again took forever for him to get back to us. He promised to put in a service order to have amerimax call me within a week. Guess what? They never called. Again reached out to jim via email and voicemail in which he promised to call me the next day. Never happened. Again emailed and he wrote back stating he put in a service request for amerimax to call. This was 4 days ago....
