Located right off of market Square, the yard ended up being a bit of a surprise. The wife and I stopped in here on valentine's day for an 8pm dinner. We started with an appetizer of wings (because why wouldn't you when you're on vacation?) and was disappointed to find a limited and odd sauce selection. They have a number of sweet sauces and BBQ sauces, but no hot? Their only "Buffalo" option is mild. Needless to say, these wings came out tasting like butter with a splash of frank's hot sauce. The main course was next. I had the Patty Mayonnaise (all the dishes have weird cutesy names) which is basically just a patty melt. Instead of chips and soup, I subbed in fries and Mac and cheese because once again, why wouldn't you when you're on vacation? The burgers are all cooked well done, which removes basically all flavor from them. They put so much "white cheese sauce" on the burger it came out basically sitting in a puddle. The Mac and cheese tastes (as my wife put it) like Stouffer's frozen Mac and cheese, which isn't necessarily an insult but its far from home made tasting. The waffle fries were good. Stopped in here with a friend at the tail end of happy hour. It was a Thursday so they were running a beer and burger special that was actually quite a good deal. The restaurant is upstairs with windows on one wall facing the square. Other parts of the dining room cant really see that view, but at least there are ample TVs around to watch "the game." My buddy and I got a couple rounds of beers and while our waitress was not incredibly familiar with the brews, she let us try a few before making a selection. We worked up a real hunger shopping in the fabulous Clark Building Jewelry shops for sparkly diamonds. It was fairly early (around 2PM) so we didn't want a heavy meal. The Yard seemed to fit the bit so we headed on up to the second floor above Yovi's Hotdog place. It was surprisingly crowded with lots of families. That is great to see in downtown Pittsburgh on a bleary cold February afternoon. In the not so distant past, downtown was a ghost town on weekends except for sports and Cultural District patrons. Hurrah for the turnaround! We have tried the Yard a few times for their awesome selection of draft beers and decent happy hour music selection but it had been a while since we actually ate there. The menu is mostly bar food highlighted by a page full of variations on the grilled cheese theme. I like their grilled cheeses but then, I'm a real Texas Toast lover so that's not a surprise. I tried out the Yard Walker sandwich with chicken, bacon, cheddar, and garlic aioli with lettuce and tomato and red onion on a brioche bun. It was just okay, not great but not horrible either. I think it needed seasoning like salt and pepper or something because it was a little bland, to be honest. For a side, I substituted fresh cut thin sliced French fries with parmesan cheese sprinkled on them and herbs. They were supposed to be garlic parm but I detected very little garlic. They were fresh and slightly crispy and the right portion. My gf ordered the poutine fries that come with gravy, cheese curds, short ribs, and beer cheese. They came in a metal bowl and were essentially a HUGE LIMP GLOB of melted cheese and fries. They were sort of bland too. Disappointing and not even good the next day. Our server was excellent! The price was $35 for two of us without any beer (just tea and water). I think it's a great spot to hang out after work or before a ballgame but not really my first choice for food. read more

I highly recommend the perogies as an appetizer. I had the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and my wife had the Slap Yo' Mama. The Always Sunny was fantastic. The Slap Yo' Mama was very good as well, but had a bit too much barbecue sauce for our taste, I think we would have preferred a bit less barbecue sauce and a little more cheese. But it was still very good. All the grilled cheese sandwiches come with tomato soup and house-made chips. I substituted tater tots for the chips, and they were very good. My wife loved the chips as well. We tried both desserts, the beignets and the Because We Got High. The beignets were very good but, being from the South, I expected a little more powdered sugar. I tried the Because We Got High mainly because you just have to try a dessert named Because We Got High. I must say, it is pretty aptly named. But, it was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. It comes in two sizes, I ordered the mini and it was plenty. They were very busy as this was a game day, but the service was excellent. They seemed to be working well as a team and everyone was very friendly. Definitely a great experience. read more

I've visited The Yard many times over the years and have never been disappointed by their wide selection of grilled cheese sandwiches. It's always hard to choose because they all sound delicious (especially on a hungover Sunday morning). However, this time I visited, I opted for a healthier choice: fattoush. I wasn't even jealous of all of my friends eating their grilled cheese sandwiches because it was so good! The lettuce and veggies were extremely fresh, and it was a large serving that includes toasted pita, too. I also loved the dressing, a refreshing and light lemony-mint dressing. Our table also had their buffalo chicken dip and mac attack balls... all delicious and highly recommended! It's hard to be too critical of businesses that are trying to do their best to operate during these pandemic times, but just an honest observation so you can decide for yourself whether conditions are acceptable to you. I've always enjoyed The Yard...their quality of food, decent pricing, great craft beer selection and service. Two nights ago a friend and myself had a few beers and dinner. The servers were wearing masks but probably half of the clientele didn't wear them when transiting from their table to restrooms, or exiting, probably due to the fact that most customers are in their 20's and 30's and in lower risk groups who just aren't as considerate of others. The Yard Burger I had was good, but the bun was cold. The housemade chips that accompanied it were only so-so with half of them being chewy and only a few were crisp...not sure how that is. Our server as often is the case there, was very pleasant and observant of guidelines. Likely the above critique may be temporary but just wanted to point out some current shortcomings. read more

The good - great beer selection - there were some that I don't see very often and I was excited. -The pretzels are a perfect app. They are delicious. -Sandwiches are always great if not a bit 'too much', but that's what take home boxes are for. The ok -I had a few slight issues with my server, but maybe she was just having an off day - in general she was nice and helpful, just a bit forgetful. -I tried the Caesar salad for the first time and found the dressing to be super fishy - not for me. Updated review: Honestly , the bottomless mimosas make this restaurant one of favorites except for today. We arrived at 2pm and ordered an appetizer, beer, and the mimosas. Everything was pretty great at that point. We had the chips and dip with our drinks and watched some really good games on. The restaurant was not overly crowded. A good amount of people were leaving we when arrived. We ordered our food about 15 after 2. We didn't get our food until 10 til 3, so we were starving and a little upset. We only had 2 people in our party and there were couples who arrived after us that ate and left before we got food lol. Our server was nice but honestly my boyfriend's monster of dragons was super soggy from where it had been sitting for awhile and it was just not good. we won't be returning here for a long time after our experience today. read more

We were in town for a wedding and 10 of us ate at the Yard. The food was fantastic! All ten of us thoroughly enjoyed each of our different meals. They easily accommodated a large party, and we had excellent service as well. I had the yard burger with waffle, sweet potato fries that were phenomenal. The only drawback was not knowing that they were on a second level. We did have a parent with us that had difficulty with stairs. They were very busy & unprepared due to the "Taylor Swift concert" you can't put your name in ahead of time & when we went they said it'd be over an hour & a half wait but I gave them my information & they simply never contacted me so obviously we went somewhere else. They were very unorganized with their waitlist. I tried going again one last time yesterday before hitting the road but even after putting my name in & they said it'd be about an hour, i call an hour later to check & they said it'd be another hour. Just a frustrating experience overall. Especially because parking is a real pain as well. Extremely limited street parallel parking available or you're looking at extremely over priced garages. So obviously when you get there you just want to eat there. Both times we tried to sit were after 2, before 5, so you wouldn't think it'd be impossible to get in. read more

Have been to "The Yard" five time since they have opened. Loved it each time. The food at the trucks was very good. It was nice to be able to check the calendar and see the type of food truck in advance. But honestly each time was great. The pizza shop offers a nice traditional alternative if the food truck doesn't appeal to everyone in your party. The atmosphere was a lot of fun. Really nice spot right near Market Square. I would say the ennvironment is a little on the noiser side so may not be the best for a quiet dinner, if thats what youre looking for. The food was really really delicious. They have a huge selection of grill cheeses that are very unique and special. Everyone thought it was delicious but more on the greasier side. The steak salad is a must try if youre there trying to minimize your carbs. The waffle fries could be on the side if youre not use to fries on salads. The buffalo dip is to die for and has a food kick. I highly recommend that and the flatbreads. YUM. I would definitely recommend this place for a causal night out. Our server was very nice and attentive. My only problem with the place was that the tables seemed pretty beat up, and they really need to up their music playlist. I have gone into this location many times usually by myself....so I go to the bar ( the host never is happy nor accommodating) however I just go to the bar, all of the bartenders are amazing I have even spoke with the staff. They are so kind and knowledgeable. It's always great food oh the soups are to die for!!! I will continue to stop as often as I can!!! The Halloween decorations are on point. I recommend the " I start my diet monday" the fried green tomato grilled cheese and they all come with tomato soup to dip in. I checked out The Yard during my lunch hour the other day, since there has been a lot of hype regarding the grilled cheese. I must say they lived up to all expectations! I got the 'Shrooms Grilled Cheese, which came with tomato soup and french fries (as all grilled cheeses do). The portions are large, so I was able to save half for later. The space in the restaurant is nice- it's on the second floor of a building in market square. There are a lot of tables and the bar is nice. The only improvement opportunity I noticed is the stairs that lead up to the restaurant. The rubber matting lifts and could be a tripping hazard if you're not careful! Holistically, I would definitely recommend coming here for the grilled cheese! read more

We were searching for a spot to get brunch on a Sunday late in the day and we stumbled upon this spot. Brunch lasts until 4pm on Sat & Sun, so this was perfect. When we approached the door and entered the building, we noticed the stair case and building was a little worn, so we were hoping that this place would be ok and clean. Once we got to the top of the steps, it was different atmosphere. The decor was modern, and the dining area was cozy. The place was clean and bright, and I loved the pics on the wall. The servers were friendly and we were seated immediately. We started off with a single mimosa and a glass of water. (They do offer bottomless mimosas for $15 during brunch) For brunch, we ordered the Hot honey chicken & waffles and the steak mac attack.The food come up pretty quick about 15 minutes and the server was very friendly and checked on us frequently. My chicken in waffles came in the form of two sliders between waffle triangles, pickles, white cheddar cheese sauce and hot honey sauce. They came with a side of homefries. The hot honey sauce was honey-based with some hot sauce and spices added it. It was really good, but honestly not hot at all. I think the sliders were delicious and had a good balance of sweet and salt. My home fries were room temperature, of course they would have be best served hot, but they were still good. My other guest had the mac n cheese bowl with steak on egg on top and loved it. Overall, our visit was great and we enjoyed our food. Didn't dig too much into the wallet and worth every penny. This was my first time in Pittsburgh and we only had a short layover. We weren't sure where to stop and one of my crew members had come across The Yard online. I am sooo glad she did! This place is great! *granted we visited during a pirates game, so it was probably not as full as it normally is due to everyone being next door at the game... but as soon as the game was over, it DEFINITELY filled up fast* We were so impressed with the beer selection and found some great beers to enjoy with our dinner. Thanks to her I tried the My Diet Starts Monday grilled cheese. It was excellent!!! And soo much food! I ended up taking half home to enjoy the next day. All the grilled cheese sandwiches come with tomato soup . I didn't realize this till it came out and it was such a great surprise and the source of some definite nostalgia. The soup was great, and the sandwich was so full of flavor. The option for a side were some homemade chips or you could upgrade to fries or sweet potato fries. Brittany recommended the sweet potato fries, and so I decided to go for it. Many places make great fries but the dip for the sweet potato fries can sometimes be too sweet and not appealing. That was not the case here. The fries came with a cinnamon sugar whip on the side, which was soo good! It wasn't overly sweet and had such a great flavor that you wanted to make sure you had some on every bite of your fries. I'm really impressed, by the food and service we experienced here and would certainly come back if I'm in the area again! Only thing to note if you are planning to visit, is that it is on the second floor and the only way up is the stairs which may not make it accessible to everyone. Get the poutin as for the grilled cheese our party loved the: smack yo mama, Mac attack, fried green tomatoes, crabby patty and mother of dragons if you love heat. Each sandwich was large came with tots or chips and a side of tomato soup. Many of us weren't able to finish the sandwiches because they were so big and had plenty of cheese. We arrived with a party of 8 and the wait was 90 minutes. After about a 30 minute wait we were seated. Definitely get reservations here if you plan to come here for brunch. I highly recommend The Yard for brunch. The snozberry pancakes and French toast are both fantastic. The restaurant was fairly busy when I went, but I received prompt service regardless. Pretty typical pub atmosphere--loud, TVs, bar seating options. There are also a few tables outside which I imagine are a great way to enjoy a nice day in market square. My server told me that the restaurant is best-known for its grilled cheese sandwiches so I ordered one from the "Hall of Fame" on their menu, the "Smack Yo Momma" in addition to my brunch item. It came with chips and tomato soup. The soup was superb and the chips seemed homemade and were also very good. The sandwich was good (and very messy), but paled in comparison to the breakfast items.
