This was a really neat dining experience. We spent the day skiing at Solitude, lifts close at 4, then we hung around the village area until 5:45 for everyone to gather and start trekking to The Yurt. The advertisement said we would snowshoe in but the guides, who later turned out to be the waiters, told us the trail is pretty well walked on but people could still put on snowshoes if they wanted to. No one put on any so everyone just started walking in; you leave going another way which is super wide (may be part of a ski trail) probably because it's pitch dark by the time you are done and the narrow path would be a big liability. The guides/waiters introduced themselves and told us stories and the history of The Yurt and yurts in general. There is no heating, it's only warm from the cooking that has gone on from preparing your meal and now peoples body heat. The food was really good and was prepared with unique ingredients. Table situation: 2 large community tables, some people sat across from each other while some people sat next to each other, every one was really nice and were there for a good time Bathroom situation: do yourself a favor and use the bathroom before walking to The Yurt, it's a port-a-potty and you have to use it with a supplied headlamp. There aren't any smells since it's so cold out and they do have a pretty creative washing station when you return to The Yurt. I went before going but I still had to go while I was there :'(.

If you are willing to walk for your dinner, you'll be hard pressed to find a more rewarding -- and unique --dining experience than the one Solitude Mountain Resort offers at the Yurt. Hidden away in the lower elevations at Solitude, it is not surprising if you haven't heard of the yurt dining experience. An observant rider may catch a glimpse of the round, tent-like structure while riding the Sunrise chair, but other than that, this restuarant- though I hesitate to call it that as the dining area is intimately limited to 22- is strategically located to create a solitary mountain experience. After roughly a mile of snowshoeing in through a tight wooded trail, we were greeted with a warm glow at the yurt. Inside, a wood stove humming with pots, pans, skillets took center stage. Chef Abby Carlson smiles as she prepared the ingredients of the first course. We seated ourselves and were quickly served refreshments of water (for me) and uncorked bottles of wine which others sipped while our guide proceeded to tell us the history and purpose of yurts in their native land of Mongolia. Our first course, a pureed cauliflower soup, took the chill off our bones and put us at ease for the rest of the evening. Tart diced apples topped the soup and cut through the creaminess of the cauliflower, giving it a refreshing taste. Seared crabcakes with avocado were next, reminding me of a surf side eatery back home in Florida. The crisp sear and the smooth avocados melded into a heavenly combination. Not a bite was left. Our third course, the salad, was anything but standard: triple cream brie was served atop toasted bread alongside a roasted pear and baby greens salad with a freshly made vinaigrette. The brie delighted with a rich, buttery flavor. Not one to be overcome by salads, I had to hold myself back from stealing bites from my neighbor after my plate was clear. The highlight of the meal served as our fourth course. Our eyes opened wide when we were presented with a plate filled with a rustic meal of sauteed mushrooms and spinach, mashed potatoes and tender beef topped with au jus. Do not be surprised at the simplicity of the ingredients- the skill and selection of quality ingredients provided flavors that were unmatched by similar fare elsewhere. Lastly, an oh-so-slightly sweet custard topped with a spicy-sweet chutney finished the evening. Wine glasses continued to be refreshed throughout the evening, adding to the increasing boisterousness of the group as we bantered with our neighbors, pausing to give a generous applause to the chef as she took her leave into the wintry night. I have never experienced such tempting flavors prepared in such a primitive way. Chef Abby worked alone over a stove powered by wood, yet successfully brought together flavors which complemented the alpine environment with her own creative twist. From the first step towards the yurt to the last snowshoe removed, dining at Solitude's Yurt was a true experience that no foodie or outdoor adventurer should miss.

Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. We ordered a bison burger with fries, pulled pork poutine, and blue corn nachos. The fries were limp and cold. The nachos arrived with regular corn chips instead of blue corn and were also cold. The pulled pork poutine was cold as well, and the burger was overly salty. What made the experience worse was the lack of service. We waited about 30 minutes without being checked on while the manager appeared to visit other tables. After flagging down a server, it took additional time before we were assisted. I understand that restaurants can have off nights, but this visit fell well below expectations -- especially given the price point and past experiences. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, as the location and atmosphere have always been a draw.

The food was fantastic, made with care, and far above what you usually find in a mountain lodge setting. The staff were genuinely friendly, attentive, and seemed to take real pride in the place. The dining room and bar have a rustic charm that feels authentic rather than staged, which adds to the overall atmosphere. A memorable stop and absolutely worth returning to.

They were not; they were actually 50% or more higher at the restaurant. The hamburger that was showing on Yelp for $15 was actually $22. The Steak Frites advertised for $22 were $35. I understand inflation, but this was a gross enough difference that it borders on deception, in my opinion. I also had a bad experience with my food: I ordered a cup of their chili (which they claim is made from scratch, on-site) and it was brought to the table cold. Like, "right out of a can" cold. Kelsi, our fantastic server, returned it to the kitchen where (I presume) they nuked it and brought it back. It was heated, but not very tasty. Flat; under-seasoned; mushy textured. Definitely something I'd never order again. Many reviews say the atmosphere is "loud" but what they mean is, it's "LOUD". We were seated inside, and it was nearly impossible for the three of us to converse. The acoustics are not great. Enough cons; how about some pros? My burger was FANTASTIC! piled high with caramelized onions and pastrami, but beef patty tasted like it'd just come off a charcoal grill. Terrific flavor in every bite. (The parmesan fries were tasty, too, but a little on the soggy side.) My dining partners each had a salad (one 'wedge' and one 'beetroot') and both were well-prepared and generously portioned. And, finally, the staff, the location, the vibe: All really first-rate. I'll probably come back, if I ever recover from the bait'n'switch sticker shock. (But I'll steer clear of the chili and opt to dine on the patio, if that's available!)

At the same time, they do the "common" stuff really well like kids' food. Great experience through and through. Walking in, you immediately know it's a well-run establishment, there's people moving quickly everywhere and they even have a few to-go areas with coffee stations that seems to be busy. We went during the World Cup and they also had a projector playing one of the games for a cool vibe. They had an amazing menu of commonly found entrees, but with like an elevated twist.
