There's a couple of basic good practices for buying diamonds. The first is always to compare the entire diamond market when making your purchase. Remember every jeweler is just a middle man and they should be competing on service. Rare carrat and blue nile can get you a pretty good idea of what to purchase. The second is to always check the full GIA certificate before you make a purchase. Type the GIA # into google to get a good idea about the stone and compare it to others. If someone is hesitant to give you the Gia certificate in full.. run... Steve wouldn't give me the full GIA certificate under any circumstances. Claiming and I quote: "I know you are not going to do this but there's someone that 'is' comparing prices all over the places." After a brief phone conversation, he claimed he can't compete on prices to larger retailers so he doesn't want to lose a sale by giving out the GIA certificate numbers. Both got their engagement rings from The Seos, and I did not have a lot of time to shop around, so I trusted them and went to The Seos for both my engagement ring and, subsequently, my wedding bands. I only interacted with Steve Seo throughout my experience. I started off knowing virtually nothing about engagement rings, but I was lucky that my significant other had described exactly what she wanted to one of her close friends who happened to be knowledgeable about these things, so I was able to speak to the friend first and relay to Steve what I was looking for. I also provided Steve with my budget. Steve was successful in finding a diamond that suited my needs. He was very respectful of my budget and never pressured me to change what I was looking for. That said, he was able to educate me as to which variables of a diamond should be prioritized, and in so doing he was able to guide the search process. Steve was very patient and accommodating throughout the process. We met many times (especially after the engagement) and Steve offered many complimentary services such as polishing, resizing, etc. I also appreciated that he was flexible in coordinating meetings with me and my fiancee when we could not visit him at his office. All in all, I was satisfied with my experience, but as I did not shop around anywhere else, I only have this single point of reference. Armed with skepticism and cynicism of the whole industry, I shrugged at the idea of meeting a jeweler. I needed an engagement ring and I thought, why not? At worst, I'll walk out being affirmed of my notion of the industry. At best, maybe a ring? I walked out with a ring.
