We were in Sandusky for three nights to ride the coasters at Cedar Point. Each evening we stopped by the Thirsty Pony and it was the perfect way to end each fun-filled day. Great drinks, happy hour specials, friendly staff and awesome bar food. We tried the wings, burgers, perch, fries, mac n cheese, large pretzel with dips, and, sauerkraut balls (yep, mixed with sausage and cheese and deep fried). The complex has so much going on - you can spend an evening watching the big screens, doing a bit of gaming, bowling, playing corn hole toss outside, or just hanging out at the bar talking to the most friendly bartenders who take time to chat while being prompt with the food and drinks. I came to this restaurant Tuesday night while on vacation and had a terrible experience. Out waitress was Nikki and she provided some of the worst service any of us had ever experienced. We arrived and were seated quickly and soon we were introduced to Nikki, who took our drink order. Our drinks took at least ten minutes to arrive. We ordered our food and it took twenty minutes for a salad to arrive then another 5-10 for our pretzel. When we had hit the hour mark of being in the restaurant our dinner arrived, we'll two of the four meals. It took 15 minutes for a follow up and we were told it was just about ready. Then ten minutes later a man, who was so apologetic but we didn't catch his name, brought out a third meal. We asked where the rest was and he had no idea there was more. So finally about ten minutes later we got the last of our food. When this was discovered Nikki came over and did not offer an apology, not even a simple I'm sorry. She told us, "we're busy and I'm training someone and the ticket didn't go in, my hands are tied but your food will be out soon". She immediately blamed the trainee and their business, which it was a Tuesday night and not very busy for reference. She was who took our order and did not put it in. We weren't expecting anything in return for this negative experience but the waitress was rude to us over it and couldn't even utter I'm sorry after everything that occurred. ALSO one person in the group paid in cash and the change was not returned. She just assumed it was for herself. read more

A hoot. It's the rare spot that follows through on the gonzo vibe promised from the road, with over-the-top bar food that's actually pretty good. Kitschy, silly "try the cheese glop" atmosphere with a Zoltar fortune-teller when you walk in. Potato Trio - Flawlessly fried tots, seasoned fries and cinammon-y sweet potato waffle fries. You get three dips to mix-and-match, each of which is house made from an inspired recipe. The cheese glop is thick and flavorful, and you may want a side order of extra-goo even though they'll charge for it. A creamy sweet dip made with real cream cheese goes well with the sweet-potatos, though palate-fatigue sets in quickly with that one. The sweet-and-hot dark, tarry ectoplasm is absolutely delicious. And may have whiskey in it. Super Nachos - One time I was at a county fair and saw a horse that was bigger than I am. Literally a ton of gleaming muscle. As I looked up into those calm, black Percheron eyes I felt a sort of respect that was probably biological. These nachos caused a similar reaction when they hit the table. Six tostadas form a mountain range of gringo goodness. Lots of meat, lots of beans, lots of cheese, and a truly "super" amount of everything. Never before in a restaurant have I met nachos that there was enough of. All the ingredients are of good quality, and tasty in an American-Mexican way if not up to authentic-family-recipe standards. Ummmm.. Nothing special by no means! While in Sandusky on business the president of the school we were visiting recommended we go there for steaks... in which we did! The special that Tuesday night was 10.99 16 oz steak! Yes.... yu read what I typed correctly.. $10.99 for a 16oz steak and it accompanied two side dishes. I'm always leery of super cheap eats (i.e. Taco bell, Micky D's, Ihop) but we didn't know it was THAT kind of place when it was recommended to us. We all "liked" our steaks but it was nothing special about the piece of meat at all. I added sauteed onions and mushrooms on mine... totally could have done without. Usually when you add sauteed onions and mushroom on meat they the vegetables are actually sauteed like with seasonings and spices and such.. not here... taste like they just cut the mushrooms and onions up and fried them. We also shared the shrimp trio appetizer. Now that was disgusting.... everyone took one bite of their shrimp and kinda let it get cold on their plates. They were so greasy and the shrimp were almost as long as a corn dog O_O read more

Stopped in here for lunch around noon on a Wednesday. We were the only table in the front, with a few people sitting at the bar. The menu was pretty big so it took awhile to make a selection. I chose the Cilantro Lime Chicken Sandwich and my coworker picked the Sloppy Pig. The food came out in a timely manner but it was not at all what I expected. The menu says you get chips as a side however it's just a bag of chips and the pasta salad is in a tiny soufflé cup. The Cilantro Lime Chicken was to be topped with cilantro, lime vinaigrette dressing, avocado, and mozzarella. My sandwich had lettuce, mozzarella, and onion (???). A bag of chips, friend pickle, and chicken breast for $11?! It was just a dull chicken breast, but by the time I realized our waitress was gone and didn't return until she handed us our checks. When she handed me the sandwich she said it was boring, and now I see why! Also during our time there another table came in after us. They were greeted and served drinks. Like I said the menu is large so they needed some time to order but the waitress never checked on them after that. The man had to walk up to the bar to place their order which they had to take to go. I've been a server myself but with two tables in the dining room there's no excuse to be so inattentive. The atmosphere was busy, but a good busy, upon visiting we found this place on Yelp and I really wanted to like it! Unfortunately I feel like parts of the dining room have never been dusted and the menu never wiped. The second star goes for the location and clean bathroom. Maybe they should limit their menu; it's better to be stellar at a few things than half ass a wide menu. Overall I was very unsatisfied. Over priced, unclean, inattentive service, and average food. Not a fan of chain restaurants but that might be your best bet in this area. read more

I just want to start off by saying that the options on their menu are really exciting! And all the food we saw around the restaurant looked and smelled amazing!! Our experience, however, was not exciting or amazing. Our waiter forgot to put in our appetizer (understandable, okay) but then our food took forty minutes to come out. If we had our appetizer we would have been fine, but we were starving. Once we got our food, we were really excited to taste what we had been anxiously awaiting. Watching the rest of the table take their first bites was promising. They both raved about the flavor and the quality. I got the same entree as one of my table mates, so I had high hopes. But my first bite was disappointing to say the least, and only got worse from there. The steak on the steak salad was the chewiest I have ever eaten, and flavorless on top of that. We then both started finding rotting pieces of lettuce in the salad, which in my opinion should be easily avoidable. My husband got coleslaw with his burger and gave it to me to try, and to be frank, it tasted like feet. We were not checked on, so we flagged down the waiter to tell him about all of my issues, who then grabbed the manager. He did comp the salad, which was nice, but it was definitely a notable experience. On a not food related tangent, the bathrooms are not nice. The women's bathroom is neglected and run down, and the men's is just crude, according to my husband. read more

I love this place! Made great memories on my family vacay that include the Pony. I bet on my first horse race here. Got an awesome high heel drink cup/ future piggy bank! Also the Great Lakes Brewing Co's Christmas Ale on tap was like candy. One if the best brews I have ever had. Gonna try my best to visit again this Summer. I live 4 hours South & this was the perfect Lil getaway. If you want a good vacay in this area stay at Rain & hit up the Pony :) You can also go bowling too. I think at the end of the day I'd give this place 3 stars but on the lower side of 3 for me, since I don't do a lot of 4's and hardly ever 5s, that makes it a place you can go to and should be able to enjoy but maybe not the best in the world. I will give it 3 stars easy for the ambiance, and I thought service was just fine. we sat at the bar, our bartender was attentive without being a pest and service was prompt. I dock it for serving draft beer warm...not just not cold but lukewarm, which in my mind means you shouldn't be serving draft beer. I did like the décor a lot and the fact that it's right next to a bowling alley and a waterslide. The décor is eclectic to say the least. I also liked the food - we had a regular salad, which as some have said is hard to get wrong but still good, and the pizza was good too - a chicken parmesan style, I enjoyed it. Usually take an annual trip to Cedar Point. First time visiting places and really liked it. It was pretty crowded for a Monday. I ordered the Chubby Hubby burger and it was good. It's a bit disappointing that it costs extra fries or tots since fries are a common staple of a burger, especially when burgers are priced at $11-$15. Drink prices are solid. I had a Summer Shandy and it was $6.50 for the 24oz. The regular mixed cocktails like Jack and Coke and stuff were just $5, which isn't a bad deal! It did seem like the bartenders got a little lazy and didn't shake the drinks at times. But overall a solid place with solid food. My husband got a half order of beef nachos, yum! Like I could resist to try them?!? I have seen this Fricker's chicken before in Ohio. I got the Frickin' chicken sandwich and it is super moist, the wing sauce spicy garlic perfect heat and flavor. My sandwich came with a deep fried pickle, a cup of pasta salad and a bag of chips. Came here on successive nights for drinks while on a family trip to the amusement park, since my nearby hotel lacked any comparable amenities. This place is a little unusual, since it caters to horse racing gamblers. Most of the tvs show harness and horse racing from all over the states, and in part of the bar you can place bets. If you are not one of the subspecies of humanity interested in gambling on the ponies, you may hang out at the bar or even sit in the restaurant. Drinking-wise--it's pretty decent, with six beers on tap and plenty of various selections liquor wise. Not enough local craft beer on tap imho. The service is quick and friendly, and you can chat a bit with the bartenders if you wish. Food--nothing special. It's sports bar stuff, pretty low brow and unremarkable, although not apparently offensive. I had the fried pickles, which were average. If you're in the vicinity and in the mood for an adult beverage, you can't go wrong by going here. read more

The Thirsty Pony was the closest place outside of cedar point that was conveniently still serving food when we left at 10 pm. We got seated within 10 min and although it was very crowded, the waitress came and asked for our drink order after only a few minutes. Then we ended up having to wait about 30-40 min for our food, hence the 4 stars. That being said, our waitress was extremely apologetic and she did keep checking in with us consistently. The food was awesome! Huge portions, the sauces on the wings were good, and the "fricken' chicken" was really amazing. Ah, pretty pretty pretty gross. I remember going here in college and the food was good, but that was being assessed by a guy that lived on ramen noodles and microwave bean burritos. Fast forward 10 years, the more adult and cultured me thinks this place is awful. The drinks are okay, but that's about it. I had the perch dinner with a side salad and coleslaw. Salad was very large and pretty good. Hard to mess up a side salad. Perch was disgusting. WAAAYYYYY overcooked and rubbery. My wife had the steak salad. Steak was very fatty and she only ate part of the salad. Friend's girlfriend had chili cheese fries, which were topped with a chili with beans (we're from Detroit and you just don't put beans on your chili cheese fries). There were large chunks of ground beef that they didn't take the time to break up (golf ball size) and were not covered in any sauce. The only one who lucked out in this culinary experiment was my buddy, who had one of their burgers topped with pulled pork, which he said was great. Bottom line: This place may be okay after a long day at Cedar Point for those who need to get some pizza into the gullet of their hangry rugrats, but for the adults in the room, you will probably be disappointed with the quality of the food. The only good thing about this place are the prices. Next time, I will choose to retain my image of this place as a broke college kid and will go eat elsewhere. read more

Signature drinks are given to you in a saxophone guitar or a variety of other shapes. They are rather sweet but it's a good piece of memorabilia for your trip. Perhaps go with a. Classic, non-signature drink. One drawback is that this place closes early. They stop serving food at 10 p.m. and close at 11. Have been loyal to this place every time we come to Sandusky for the last 15 years - FIFTEEN years. We became Cedar Point season pass holders this year and patroned the Thirsty Pony in May and again in June and the service is HORRIBLE. In May we waited 20 minutes for our drink order to be taken, then when the food arrived, everything came at once; salads, appetizers and our entrees. The table couldn't hold everything so we had to stack our food on the window ledge. Last night, which was a Monday we thought we'd give it another try because it was a Monday night and they weren't too busy. SAME THING AGAIN. 20 minutes for our drink order (we put our food order i with our drink order), and after 15 minutes waiting for our drinks that never came, we left. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED at how bad the service has become. We ordered pizza and breadsticks from Pizza Hut and won't be back. read more
