Looking for a real Sonoma experience? This is it. I had to get away from the SF techie's favorite spots and found the Three Fat Guys tasting room. Patio is amazing and a great spot to spend an hour or 4. Wine is ridiculous. The Rosé is literally created to be enjoyed in an Adirondack chair- also apparently the tasting room is the only place you can get the Rosé, so that alone makes it worth the trip. The owner played in the NFL and grew up in Sonoma, so cool to get some stories from the glory days of each. Overall, really great spot and we'll be back. I even signed up for the wine club, but I'm worried the wine will lose something without a sunny Sonoma afternoon to go with it... read more

Really wanted to like this place; it has a great story, fun atmosphere and usually one of the owners on site. However, we found it a big disappointment. I'll start with the good though: 1. Great story of the winery and the owners. 2. Nice setup for outdoor tasting that feels very accessible in what can be a really "snooty" area. The disappointing: 1. The wines were just not enjoyable. They fell flat in taste and nose compared to the many other offerings in the area. 2. Pours were really short. I am aware we only did a tasting and am not expecting a glass for a tasting price, but of the 7 wineries tried over several days, this was the most overpriced for the least amount of tasting pours provided. 3. Wine prices were inflated, even for the area. We quickly got over the sticker shock of bottles in Sonoma; but the prices here were very high for very mediocre wine. Even the "everyday" wine was overpriced for its taste. Overall, there are better options. read more

We had the BEST afternoon at TFG - we lucked out and happened to go there for the release of their 2019 Pinot, so all three "Fat Guys" were in town, pouring wine and hanging out with the guests. The wine is outstanding, but it was the people that truly made our afternoon. The guys made us feel right at home, each taking time to sit down and get to know us, and telling some awesome stories of their days on the Green Bay Packers (which was especially exciting for friend, who is a die hard Packers fan). We left there feeling like we had made new best friends - big shout out to Casey too, you're the man. We have been to three wineries before this and THIS is what we were wanting in a wine tasting. Tony was wonderful. This was not a tourist trap. He and his wife grew up in Sonoma and he loves wine. Wow, what a beautiful backyard oasis. Truly a hidden gem in the town of Sonoma. Oh and the wines? What a surprise ! The 2017 Rutherford Cabernet is drinking like a wine that has been cellared for 10 years. So approachable, even in the afternoon sun. We were started off with a Sonoma Valley rosé of Pinot Noir, pure raspberry and cranberry. It went down a little too easy! Then we moved onto the Sangiacomo Chardonnay. Great acid and citrus on the palette, and a nice full mouthfeel thanks to barrel fermentation and lees. We were then poured a 2017 Carneros Pinot Noir which beautifully translated the soil and climate that Carneros is so well know for. Finally we finished with that Cab. The tasting is very well laid out and the servers are so knowledgeable about the wines. No wrong questions here! This is a place to relax and take in the day; which is always better with wine. Loved this place. I was skeptical about all the other 5 star reviews, but after visiting, I can say that it is well deserved. The outdoor space is great, and the umbrellas helps make it bearable in the 100 degree weather. The staff is friendly, and seem to love what they do. Tony, one of the owners, was making his rounds and appeared to genuinely enjoy talking to the guests, and answering any questions about the winery, and making sure everyone is having a great time. All of this, and their wine is amazing, too. They only have a few offerings - a Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet - and they are all good. We ended up buying a few bottles to take back home, and joining the wine club. Definitely looking forward to the next visit! read more

We visit Sonoma frequently and today would have been our second time at 3 Fat Guys. Decided to go by there today because we had such an amazing experience our first time. According to Yelp they close at 6pm so we tried to squeeze in a quick tasting at 5:45pm but were told we couldn't do a tasting they were closing up. Fellow wine tasters educate me: If a wine tasting place says they close at 6pm when is the cut off to go in and taste wine? I want to be respectful of the unspoken code. They REALLY know what they're doing with their wine -- some of the yummiest I've had in a long time -- and the humble approach they bring to the tasting experience truly makes for a great time. My wife and I stopped in with a group during an electric trike tour (big positive plug for Howard at Pushpak Motors on the Sonoma Square). Really enjoyed the staff as well as Tony Moll who spent some time with our group. Very casual, quite comfortable and some very tasty wines. We blitzed several vineyards for tastings during our Napa/Sonoma stay and this place was right at the top of our pallet pleasers. I'm normally not a Chardonnay lover but this was very good.
