I have stopped here for lunch three times recently. The food is pretty good, but relatively expensive. The unique customs of this establishment are confusing for newcomers and are off-putting to me. Do you want to be like Starbucks, or do you want to be a restaurant? You can't be both. I get the feeling that Three Tarts does not know what it would like to be. They have an oddly large number of workers behind the counter to be so slow. I think Three Tarts would be wise to emulate Bennison's Bakery in Evanston, instead of whatever it is they are trying to do. read more

Three Tarts Rocks. The owners are very sweet, the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. I don't know if he still works there or not but the manager, Miguel, is a good guy and he cares a lot about customer service and presentation. And you would be hard-pressed to find better sandwiches and soups in Northfield. I used to work there so I may be a little bias but I loved the food, particularly the white chili. This place is incredible. I have ordered multiple cakes from here and it is the best cake on the North Shore. The cake is seriously to die for and they always make your custom order cake PERFECTLY. It is also a great place for lunch with great soups and salads, and it's also a great place to drop by if you are looking for a quick sweet great like a slide of cake, a cookie, scone, or muffin. Bought a late season peach almond tart for around $19.50 and it was stale and dry. We don't live close by or I would've taken it back. Be sure to ask when the pastries were made at the price they're asking For about a 7 inch tart to have it not being made that day is really poor. Good product but the service sucks. If your soup and sandwich special is advertised for $8.95 people, please don't up the fee and condescendingly refer to your confusing break down as the problem. I know how to add. Coffee is luke warm always, and nothing comes out together or on time. I found myself eating my sandwich before my salad, while my friend was still waiting for hers when I'd finished. This happens all of the time, and I can't get past it. I absolutely love Three Tarts for lunch and special treats. For lunch, you can get a half sandwich and soup (or sub for a small salad) with chips or apple with two small cookies of your choice, all at a reasonable cost of around $9.00. The pear salad was excellent (I subbed it for the soup). TT also has a wonderful selection of teas. Great quality food in a quaint cafe atmosphere. Service is always friendly, helpful and relatively quick (especially if you need to get something during work hours). Check this place out -- it's hard to find a cafe of this quality in the burbs -- you will love it! read more

Mediocre selection & okay-tasting baked goods along with rude staff make for a one-star rating! The cashier forgot to ring-up the cookie he got out of the behind-the-counter case for my 2-year old and told me after I had paid for my other items, "You didn't pay for that cookie he's eating." I gladly paid for the over-priced cookie ($3.50 for the beautifully decorated, but tasteless easter cookie), but I couldn't get over the accusatory tone the cashier had used for HIS error of not ringing it up in the first place. Then another staffer (perhaps the manager/owner?) gave me a time-limit on the table we were sitting at by firmly stating, "I have a very important meeting at this table in 5-minutes so you will have to move." Basically implying that I, a paying customer, was not important at all! I left my 2-year old at the table while I went to get a napkin and this staffer started crinkling-up the cookie bag/wrapper and wiping down the table, giving me a dirty look for leaving my kid there for a second and also for getting crumbs on her precious table. Worst customer service ever! If you're looking for delicious baked goodies without the snarky pretension, go to Bennisons or Tags in Evanston instead of patronizing this place. Three Tarts is a very quaint and friendly neighborhood bakery. Every single birthday for close to 8 straight years I've asked for a Three Tarts cake, and every single year it is just as delicious as the year before. I, too, am shocked at the negative comments about their cakes. The vanilla cakes with buttercream frosting and raspberry filling are to die for. I've never once thought they lacked flavor. The caper tuna sandwiches and jenniper salads are also undeniably good. Every time I go there for lunch I have to order one or the other. Soups, salads, cookies, I've never disliked anything on their menu...and I used to be an extremely picky eater who could only eat their turkey sandwiches, before I tried other menu items...and I'm so glad I did! read more

The food is good, staff are always friendly and accommodating, and there is always a fun rotating menu of seasonal items. Three Tarts is our go-to bakery for special treats and birthday cakes - their cakes are as beautiful as they are delicious - so there was no question that we would ask them to make our daughter's wedding cakes. Our daughter did not want to have a traditional, tiered wedding cake but wanted a selection of different cakes for our guests to choose from. The cake tasting was quite a treat and gave us the opportunity to try a range of flavors - they prepared a very generous selection of cakes for us to try. There was even enough cake to take home and have for dessert the next day. Our daughter and our son-in-law chose banana cake with banana cream and fresh banana filling and chocolate ganache frosting; apple walnut cake with cream cheese frosting; and a yellow cake with fresh strawberry filling and whipped cream frosting. Every cake was perfect. We had the cakes decorated with fresh flowers and they were as lovely as they were yummy. It was a pleasure to work with Three Tarts! read more

Food: The banana cake is excellent. The shortbread cookies are very good. The pastry decorating is beautiful. Venue: Cute and clean. Service: Is so bad that I will never return. I've given the shop more than a dozen tries. There is ample staff (a mix of young adults and what appears to be the owners). Last weekend, I waited at the cash register for several minutes while employees chatted among themselves. The lack of attentiveness is common. I'd recommend Tags, Bennisons, Swedish Bakery, and Froggy's over TT for specialty cakes. There are delightful places to sit for lunch within walking and short driving distance of TT. Was just in today, service was horrible. Took 25 minutes for a tiny sandwich. And the latte I'm 90% sure was iced coffee and not espresso. Asked the lady at cash register what it was and her response was a rash "almond milk vanilla, what you ordered" didn't ask if it was any good! It was not! Only gave it two stars because the sample of walnut bread was good so I'm sure if you don't mind horrible service the baked goods are tasty. read more

We had a cake tasting here. It was the clear winner for us. Ann was very helpful and attentive throughout the tasting, taking notes of what we liked as we went through pictures and tried flavors. The buttercream is the real deal - so rich. The cakes were dense and moist which I loved, and the fillings we tried were all good. They have so many great cake designs to choose from, and they were willing to work with any pictures we provided if we wanted something particular that wasn't shown. The food at Three Tarts is pretty good. Nothing extraordinary. The problem we have encountered here, and have every time we've gone there, is the rude people who work here. I have literally never been in and had the people behind the counter and register be friendly. Even worse, when I was attempting to buy gift cards for teachers several months ago, hey acted as if it was an inconvenience. I think I'd rather go to Panera, where everyone is kind, than this overpriced, nasty place. read more

I frequent this spot for lunch and have had many different sandwiches and soups all of which I have enjoyed. If you don't see what you want on the menu then you can customize a sandwich. The treats are a nice addition. In particular, I love the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They seem to hire young people like high school age to work the counter which I find refreshing. I have been coming to Three Tarts periodically for the past two years since a friend brought me some Raspberry Heart cookies for my birthday. I absolutely LOVE these cookies. If I could make them myself, I would. I'm not a good baker which is why I make the trek down from where I live. In the seven times I have been, they have only not had the cookies once. I purchased macaroons instead, which were very good. I've also had a chicken salad sandwich and I enjoyed that. The place is ALWAYS packed when I get there. The employees appear frazzled and overwhelmed whenever I order. And parking can be a headache. But what can I say? I'm ADDICTED to those cookies. read more

It PAINS me to leave a poor review for three tarts because I used to love them so much! But lately everything has been below the excellent quality I had come to expect from three tarts. My most recent experiences: Birthday cake: I've never LOVED the cakes from here (perhaps the ONLY thing that has always missed the mark in my eyes), but I've usually found them to be fine/ok/average. Last week we got a birthday cake from here though, and it was downright horrible -- fell apart into dry chunks right when I cut into it! Such a disappointment (it was, at least, a beautiful cake)! Cookies: I've always gone bonkers for their B&W cookies -- my FAVORITE cookies in town (including the city). But I got one today and it was BONE DRY! Clearly (like the cake) not fresh. And it was smaller than they used to be This place used to be the best -- great lunch items, wonderful cookies and pastries, and OK Birthday cakes. Now it's losing its status as #1 in my book. I was in charge of bringing my grandson's FIRST birthday cake for a group of 60 people (actually 80 showed up). So I ordered two cakes (and a smash cake). There was plenty of cake but I felt that the birthday cake was really ordinary in the decorating. I wish now that I had ordered a cake from Deerfields but my daughter-in-law had heard this was a really good bakery. Unfortunately my daughter-in-law did not think the cake tasted that good. I asked various people and some said it was good others said it was "OK, nothing great". Overall I was dissappointed with the cakes and I will probably go back to Deerfields in the future for an important cake that I want decorated for a special event. read more

The service is, for me, what kills this place. Staff is unfriendly, never smiles, and generally seems unhappy to be there. Ive ordered many cakes over the years and taste wise they were fine and decorations were fine- nothing over the top or "wow" about them but decent. But the attitude of the staff is awful. A few months ago i tried to order a birthday cake several weeks prior to Halloween. For a place like this several weeks out should not (and has not in the past) been an issue. It took about 3 days for someone to actually return my call (unacceptable) and the girl told me they were done taking orders for the next several weeks. Ok strange, but ok, but the way she spoke was so snippy and rude. So then she tells me "sometimes" they have cakes available to buy from their case. I said ok i could just come by the morning i needed it to get it but could they write happy birthday on it? Her reply was "maybe." Maybe? Ok clearly that isnt going to work. So then i asked her when they know if they would have cake available and her reply was "we dont- u just need to show up and see." Yeah um No thanks three tarts... Ive physically dropped in a few times and its often a chaotic mess. Long lines for things that should take no time at all to ring up. Even when its not busy the staff generally seems to ignore customers. Its too bad because i like most of their baked goods but the service part kills it. Since people have been complaining about this for years and nothing has changed im guessing this isnt likely to change now. Because they are the only specialty bakery in the winnetka/northfield area they probably feel like they dont need to change. I wish someone would open a bakery with great product and friendly staff! read more

Came here from out of town and quickly discovered why it was packed at 11 on a Friday. Delicious tuna sandwich and the homemade bread is to die for. Carrot zucchini muffin - perfection. I went to Three Tarts to have them do my wedding cake. Seeing as how I was just about a month away from the wedding, I was a little desperate. After being burned by one bakery, Three tarts came recommended so we gave them their initial $200 deposit even before tasting their cake. We did the tasting, I'll admit I wasn't blown away, but I went along with them. I felt the women in charge of wedding cakes, was always very snooty and rude, and not warm at all. She had the attitude that she was doing us a favor. Again, I wasn't happy with it but worried I wouldn't have a cake for my wedding day. We even wanted to give them more business by making an edible favor, a mini round cake. She acted as though she had never heard of such a thing, which I find ridiculous, if you run a higher end bakery. She seemed puzzled, even after we explained that we just wanted a 3 inch round cake. We finally (after about 2 weeks) got a quote for my small 3 tier cake, to feed 85 people, wedding cake. The quote was $1,000. Now I could understand this if my cake had hundreds of handmade fondent flowers on it, or something that required many hours of labor. But I just had a simple lace pattern on the top two tears, and a little on the top of the bottom tier, certainly not something that would take hours to do. I was so disgusted with the way I was treated, and even more disgusted when I received the quote. Needless to say I wont be giving Three Tarts any business in the future. read more
