Can't believe I waited for almost 3 years to try this restaurant. Being a foodie from Colorado, I have high expectations and Thrive delivered in every aspect! Food - farm to table, garden to fork at its best. Plenty of vegetarian friendly items on the menu. I finally settled on the NOLA shrimp after the server informed us the chef is originally from New Orleans. There are so many interesting layers of flavors in this dish that just keeps on revealing itself the more you savor. First bite was citrus followed by subtle heat then delicious savory taste. I literally wanted to drink the sauce! Hubby ordered their signature burger and it definitely didn't disappoint. It was juicy, tender grass fed beef of carnivore's dream. Love the disc shaped fries. Service - very friendly, fast and helpful. Our server knows the menu very well and helped us decide on the food order. Wish they're open more days of week besides Wed-Sat. Ambiance- farm to table, rustic and simple. It really let the food shine as the star of the establishment. Verdict - goodies rejoice! So glad we have this fine restaurant right in central Wisconsin. First, I wanted to say in the last few years when visiting home, I've tried to go here & they often didn't answer their phone & the one time we tried to go without calling they couldn't accommodate a spot for my dad who at the time was healing from broken leg & was using crutches. They only had high top seating on the lower level available which is too hard with a heavy boot. So, we just went to a different restaurant. Not a huge deal just hard to plan. Finally, I was able to go & I was excited because I heard some good things when they first opened. They have a nice size parking lot which is great. I love the art for their logo on the building. It looks really neat. We walked in & were quickly seated upstairs. The aesthetic was cozy brick modern vibe and very dimly lit. The only thing that kind of bugged me was they have an open kitchen but block it with generic white stacked plates. It looks just like they don't have the space for their dishware & is just a messy look like dishes are waiting to be washed or something. They definitely are cleaned but that's what it reminded me of visually from kitchens I've worked in the past. I was a fan of the fork sink in the bathroom though & the little statue before walking up the stairs. The bar also is a great size. We started with the Cheesy Cauliflower sticks. This is awesome as the two people I was with are gluten free. They didn't have the garden pesto available that day which I heard was fantastic...so that was a bummer. We got a side of tomato soup, I think. It wasn't very flavorful, so I ate them plain. The garlic sticks were great though, so I didn't totally mind. Just more curious about this Garden pesto sauce now. I also got a glass of wine to enjoy with dinner. It was a low price which surprised me. I was having a hard time making a choice between the Nola BBQ Shrimp & the Honey Garlic Salmon. The server recommended the Salmon, as the gnocchi is fantastic. I will say the salmon was actually the star of the dish and the gnocchi was bland, overly chewy, and not very flavorful at all. My expectations were a bit higher than how things turned out, but I am always willing to give places a second chance. I won't rush back as I don't live in Wausau anymore and have so many other places I want to try when I am home that I haven't yet, but I would definitely come here to sit at the bar and enjoy some drinks with friends. read more

I love the aesthetic of this place. Very trendy! I would like to go back and try other food options and to see how service is again. We waited for about 10ish minutes for someone to even come to the door to seat us then waited another 10ish minutes to be seated. Although the waitress/hostess was very nice I don't need to be told multiple times how busy you've been today and that's why the service is lacking. I enjoyed the maple bacon Brussel sprouts which says a lot because I usually don't like them! The fish tacos were very good and so were the cheese curds. Some prices were a bit high like $12 for cheese curds. Ouch. Overall though I'll try this place again. read more

I really wanted to love this place. I really enjoyed the vibe the place had and the decor was very cool. And, the food was good.... just not great. Thrive is in a unique location, not really near any other commerce, except the Semi-Pro Baseball Field around the block. Otherwise its neighbors are some housing and a few garage type buildings. This is not a bad thing, it actually makes it kind of cool, and interesting. We ate outside and it was a beautiful night. The outdoor seating is draped with white Christmas type lights and is surrounded by old metal fencing. The interior was very modern and had an open concept. The kitchen is exposed so you can watch them prepare your meal... All pretty cool! The servers were very nice, yet all seemed a little inexperienced. One of them told us it was his first week! We really liked our main server because he reminded us so much of the actor Michael Cera! Like I said earlier, the food was good but I would explain it this way... Maybe they try too hard? For example, the blue cheese dressing was slightly orange in color and had added flavor, to me it tasted like it had shrimp in it. I believe it would have been great on a cracker, but wasn't great with my salad. I was also let down that they only had one soup. (Can't do green pepper)! My Club Sandwich was good and the bread was great, but the sauce on it had an different (not bad) flavor or spice. It's unfortunate for any restaurant that is trying to make a good meal and in this case worked hard to develop a great theme. Sometimes when you explore new tastes you hit the mark with some people and miss with others. I have to say this was a great dinning experience, and I would go back. I travel frequently for work and on the occasions that I am in Wausau I always make it a point to go to THRIVE if at all possible - typically for dinner. I have never had a bad experience here and the food that I've gotten here has always been fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is all at once large and small - in that you don't feel cramped in, yet it is comfortable and during the winter it is warm. There is seating at the bar, as well as high and low tables. Everybody that I've interacted with has been pleasant and professional. I often travel solo and I have never felt unwelcome here because of that. What a pleasant surprise this place was! The atmosphere was warm and fun. Our server was spot on and had a great sense of humor. She was never intrusive, but we never had to wait for anything. The food and drinks were fantastic! I recommend garlic asparagus dip for appetizer. And for the main, it was by far the best pork chop I've ever eaten. It was tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. We were a group of 5 and everyone of us loved our meals. I was visiting from Chicago but my family is local and will be returning to a new "go to" place. We came her last night before a show at the Grand. We are from out of town and picked it based on the reviews on here and we were not disappointed. We didn't have a reservation so it would of been a 20 min wait so we ate at the bar which was no problem. Had a glass of wine and my mom got the maple chop (it was huge) and I got the medallions. Stopped by on our way to Bayfield. Neat place built in an old printing factory. Right when we walked in, the hostess just looked at us until we said something. Sat outdoors in the nice warm sun. The tables are up on the old truck docking area so you're next to all of the parked cars. Not a big deal just don't expect a view. We waited quite a while for our waitress to come even though there was only one other table seated. I ordered the grilled cheese with bacon plus kettle chips. It came a bit charred in places and had an ok taste. They used Texas toast, it was mushy and the cheese was pretty mild in flavor. I stopped by for a very early dinner today around 4:30 pm for dinner before our 6:15 pm flight out of Mosinee to Chicago. This restaurant was on my watch list to visit and became a green light whenever the gentleman at a local fromagerie (cheese shop) said this place and Red Eye Brewery were the top 2 restaurants in town. We stopped by Red Eye Brewery the night before so coming here was a no brainer. There was a constant smell of bacon as you walked in the doors. That was a great first impression. Co workers and I shared an order of cheese curds as an appetizer. I also had a chicken tortilla soup....both were good, heart starters. I ordered a maple pork chop, which was superb. Pork chop was tender and the hint of maple glaze was just right. We were tight on time so I ordered a peanut butter cheesecake to go. Unfortunately the cheesecake was the most anticipated, but most underwhelming, of everything ordered. It was definitely frozen before being served. read more

Aloha from Thrive, The one place I found that keeps the spirit of fresh and clean food alive. Out of the 300 drive through restaurants and the greasy tasteless restaurants this is a star that shines. The restaurant is clean and easy, walking in feels like taking a breath of fresh air, and there is never a wait. Parking plentiful, and staff, well service with a smile. From the trendy girl with the glasses to the redhead with the great beer recommendations we are always happy to talk to the knowledgeable staff and get fast and amazing service. The food is the star, who ever creates the dishes is the artist. Some of the best food comes out of this kitchen. Some favorites, soups and sandwiches. There's a very rustic vibe about this place (I guess?). The service is fine, but not great (hence the 3 stars). The food is mostly good, but I have only ever ordered one item on the menu. Staff was very friendly loved the decor and they have a great local beer selection. Good bar area with a handful of Tvs and long bar. Ordered the nachos and asparagus dip (think artichoke dip sub asparagus) both were very solid, especially nachos. Main course we ordered fish fry which was talapia but excellently cooked so you could still taste flavor of fish and not just breading. Also orders veggie burger which was handmade. We arrived at Thrive late on a long drive home. The decor is fun, well done and the staff is a Strength for this tucked away eatery. After being seated next to a large metal sculpture of a waiter staring at us with metal gear eyes we spent some time with the menu. I have the crispy chicken salad and my partner the mac cheese. Both had elaborate descriptions which sounded delicious! The food itself was... Just good. Not extraordinary. There were no unique flavors or memorable moments in them. I love this place. The decor was simple and stylish without trying too hard. They easily accommodated our party of 6 at dinner time on a weekday. Nice wine, beer and spirits selection. We ordered the cheese curds appetizer and they were deliciously home made. The menu easily accommodated two vegetarians in our group, which is a big plus. I got the Harvest Salmon salad. It was a generous portion and the dressing was flavorful without overpowering the rest of the ingredients. I may be alone in this sentiment, but I would have liked more beets in my salad. Good food, good beer. A bit of a strange location (just north of downtown Wausau) but worth the short trip. Check the specials, as the makes some interesting dishes. On my first visit, I ordered a chicken sandwich which, truth be told, was not impressive. However, Thrive redeemed itself on my second visit with their Maple Glazed Pork Chop dish. The Good: - The decor and ambiance is warm, modern, and feels like big city dining. - The old fashioneds are made very well here (at least by our bartender). - Great flavor on the maple pork chop. - Thrive Fries are crispy, curly, and on point. The beer selection is outstanding and my wife had a Mojito that was fruity and crisp. We give the meal 5 stars! The negative was the service. Be prepared to wait, wait, and wait again. I adore this place! Just about every time we are up north visiting family, we wind up here and for good reason! First, the atmosphere is to die for! It is the perfect mixture of modernized fine dining and eclectic refurbishment without trying too hard. The focal point is the wall of vibrantly painted reclaimed doors that have a story (read about it on the menu). The staff are super friendly and attentive and the little bar, two-level open seating dining hall, and view into the kitchen are perfect and inviting. Then comes the food! Get the Garlic & Asparagus Dip Appetizer. In fact, depending on your group size (we usually have 6) buy 3! It is so good and beautifully plated! Every other item I've gotten there has been equally amazing and all my family have loved their items every time. I've had the shakshouka, wild mushroom alfredo, and a few others. Perfect! I feel like I'm raving now, but this place deserves it. There are so few places like this, especially in Central Wisconsin. It is the perfect blend of comfort food and just right foodie spice to make anyone leave feeling content.
