First off, this is not a fancy place at all. I don't rate by décor, I'm all about the food. They have maybe 6 seats and 3 tables, but most get their food to go. Banh mi - Vietnamese sandwich that is made with French bread, homemade mayo, pate, pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, jalapeño and choice of meat. $3.75 for a 6 inch sando can not be beat. This is a way better choice than Subway, Jimmy Johns, and port of subs. The key to a good banh mi is the bread, it needs to be crunchy on the outside when you toast it and be soft on the inside. Then comes the pate that adds the creamy element, homemade mayo is a must because any off the shelf mayo would just ruin it, there's a very distinct flavor that leans on the sweeter side. Those ingredients are so important because it creates this umami experience with everything else added. I know what you're thinking. Dude, its a sandwich. Blasphemy. Sometimes the best things in life are simple. Like a toilet, it's a simple thing. We take it for granted. Have it taken away from you for a month and you'll appreciate it so much more. Same goes for it's partner... toilet paper. Start using leaves instead and I'm sure you'll appreciate even a one-ply sheet. Careful on those one-ply, wipe too hard and you might as well wipe with your fingers. That's my pro tip for you. read more

I'm Vietnamese and this sandwich shop is legit! I usually order 10 sandwiches with the request to keep the veggie separately and no toast. I keep the sandwiches in the fridge, toast it right before I plan to eat it, then put the veggies in, taste as fresh as I just bought it from the shop. The sandwiches can last up to a week this way. Update: I'm still giving this place 4 stars because as far as banh mi without crossing a bridge, this is most authentic. I like golden bun up the road but they don't give you enough meat...it's mostly bread. I go to this place because the there's a nice proportion of meat, bread, and veggies. The last time I went I forgot to ask for no pate so I didn't ask for a new one, I just dealt with it. This time I made sure to ask for cha (Vietnamese pork roll) only. I said, cha, veggies, and mayo only. He said "ok ok" but he didn't mention that to his wife in the back...he called out "banh mi cha". I got to the car and took a bite realizing there's pate, again I'm pregnant so pate is a big no no. I took it back and rather than just making a new one, he argued with me and said I didn't say that..I said yes I did. And he continued to argue. Another gentleman sitting eating his sandwich even said "you didn't tell your wife". I didn't need my money back, I drove all the way there and was craving a sandwich. This place is real. To say it is unpretentious would be an understatement. Before you go, you need to know that there's no frills here, no "ambiance," and no poofed-up platery. There's sort of two small tables, several loose chairs and an old sofa inside; it's basically a pick-up, to-go place. Several unused coolers line the walls and it looks like the kids use the front waiting area for play (balls and tiny basketball net are the toys) after hours. The food, however, is terrifically good. The banh mi's are the core and they are put together fresh and simply. Pretty authentic and straightforward. They like pork (shredded pork, pork loaf, grilled-sliced pork, ham, pork tongue and pig ear); yes -- it's definitely tail-to-tooth dining and a pork lover's dream. Their pork loaf is like an airy pâté -- something between a pâté and a mousse. The menu is short. They make their own rice noodles and fried spring rolls, which are actually filled with something and are really tasty. The nuoc cham (dipping sauce) that comes with the two noodle dishes is incredibly luscious, unctious, sweet, spicy, sour, etc. Maybe I'll ask them for just a bunch of spring rolls and nuoc cham next time. I haven't tried the Vietnamese coffee (I don't drink coffee) nor the smoothies (banana, kiwi, mango, strawberry or avocado). Next time? It's the prices that will attract a whole lot of people. You can get a fantastic sandwich for about $4.00, including tax! Other banh mi makers will ask about twice that for their sandwiches. I suppose right now they're hoping to do business on volume (it's not one of the hip areas of Santa Rosa) but foodies need to tell them they're worth more -- which they are. Great affordable lunch here. They run out apparently because I couldn't get 2 pork ban mi sandwiches at 2pm. Flavor was nice and size was great for about $4. I enjoyed my lunch here and would go back if in the area. Stopped by this place while driving north from the Bay Area, and wow this Banh mi place is legit! I got the combination sandwich, and the pate was so good in it. Also the baguette was one of the best baguettes I've had on a sandwich. Fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside without being so rough that it hurts your mouth. My friends got the grilled pork Banh mi, and both said it was seasoned very well. This place is a total gem. I got the grilled pork sandwich and sweet buns. It was so good. Just so good. The man who helped us was so friendly and gracious, referring to us as "my friend". I didn't read the other reviews before posting this but I don't doubt he greets everyone this way. The place has a few tables, a beat up couch, some canned sodas, and bags of chips. There was this little basketball hoop with balls laying around for kids to entertain themselves. It's just this charming little gem next to Puff Puff Pass, whether or not that was an intentional move to set-up shop by a head shop is unknown but if so, absolutely genius. The prices blew me away. The sandwich was delicious. Absolutely delicious. The ingredients were so fresh. I moved from Fresno where there is literally a strip of Pho and Vietnamese places in one spot off McKinley (check it out if you go. Pho #99!!) anyway, I missed really good, authentic Vietnamese food. This is a NO FRILLS Banh Mi shop. This is definitely a place where you should plan to order your food to go. There were only three small tables to eat in, and like another review noted, the dining area is "sparse and ugly". On to the good stuff, lots of different Banh Mi to chose from. These were delicious. I had the grilled pork bahn mi and asked for added fried egg. It took the guy by surprise but he obliged with scrambled egg, so still pretty close I guess LOL. Is it not a thing at all bahn mi places to have an option to add a fried egg? I was spoiled at my last neighborhood bahn mi place before I moved up here. My eating partner didn't like the ham (which is more luncheon meat) bahn mi as much as we both liked the grilled pork. Nor was I as excited by the spring rolls but it was worth a shot. The owner, I assume, explained that when he is on the register he can take credit cards with his Square app. When his wife is present, she cannot that's why there's a "cash only" sign.
