Solid banh mi spot on San Rafael-I tried and enjoyed the chicken bhan mi which was tasty. Service was super friendly and fast. This is more of a takeout location as the place itself is quite small with limited seating for ~2. Reasonable pricing. Recommend parking in the neighborhood.

This establishment is located on a little strip in a very busy intersection. There are about 6 ish spots that are 20 minute parking for those that want to be sure there is somewhere to stop by. There were 3 tables of 2 inside, though I can see many people just grabbing the sandwich and taking it somewhere else to eat consider its a bit cramped and parking is limited. FYI, CASH ONLY! I stopped by around 1pm on a Tuesday to grab a bahm mi sandwich. Their menu is very small with 5 sandwich choices, a few smoothies, and iced Vietnamese coffee. They also had a stand with chips and a fridge with ice cold sodas. The owner is literally a one man show! I was very impressed as he was doing it all, picking up the phone orders, making the sandwiches and taking the orders at the front register. He was also very sweet, greeted me right when I entered and I could tell he puts his heart and soul into this establishment. Although he was literally doing it all, I waited maybe less than 5 minutes for my Bahn mi sandwiches. I ordered the combination Bahn mi ($7) and the grilled pork Bahn mi ($7). The combination Bahn mi had a good ratio of meat to veggies. I did wish that the veggies were more fermented/pickled though. The veggies had the crunch but just missing the added tones of sourness. The jalapeños weren't spicy though. The meat was pretty standard. The bread as a little bit of miss for me today, as it was dry and flaky. When I bit into the sandwich, the bread just cracked and flew everywhere. :/ I'd give the combination Bahn mi a 3.5/5 due to the bread and the veggies. The grilled pork Bahn mi was good, the pork was flavorful and not dry. I'd give it a 4/5. The service was fast and friendly so with all that in mind 4/5 overall. From a price standpoint to quality of the product, I would definitely give them another try in the future and hope that it was just a one time thing with the bread being dry and flaky. Fingers crossed!

LEGIT. I am always excited to find delicious, cheap and authentic asian food in Marin. This is a true bahn mi place. They have 5 sandwiches to choose from and some drinks, and that's it. It's not your fancy bahn mi place -- not that there's anything wrong with that. :P I've had some yummy fancy bahn mi's. But sometimes, you want the real deal. Cash only. Cheap. The Uncle behind the counter that's the cashier and your sandwich maker. Slightly grunge-y hole-in-the-wall, but who cares -- that's how you know it'll be good. I got the combo sandwich wand a Vietnamese iced coffee. The coffee was huge and delicious. Perfect sweetness level. The combo sandwich was exactly what you want. Fluffy crumbly bread with all the Vietnamese hams and pate you want and expect, and of course topped with pickled carrot daikon, cliantro etc. The jalapaneos are seeded, so it's not too spicy. There's nothing like eating a bahn mi in your car sippin' an iced coffee on a moderate July day. Crumbs getting all over my shirt, but I don't care. There are two tables inside, but does not appear to be very comfortable. I feel like bahn mi's are meant to be eaten in your car, even if it gets all over the place. Anyhow, will definitely be back, especially on my way to Asian Market (the only Asian market in Marin)... it's like two blocks away. So how can I not stop by?? These authentic asian food places do exist! Just gotta seek em out.

Excellent grilled pork bahn mi. I had tried the same sandwich a year ago and the bread was flaky and dry. But the bread today was perfect: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. The grilled pork is savory and smoky and just a tad too garlicky. The veggies are thick cut and pickled just right. Sliced jalapeños add bite and you might want to add a little extra. The ratio of ingredients is perfect, though. Some places skimp on veggies but this one doesn't. At $6.50 for a bahn mi, it's a bargain. The owner is friendly and food comes out fast (about 5 minutes). Go ahead and add a Vietnamese coffee. Cold, strong, and sweet. Yum!

10/10 sandwiches. Ordered the grill sandwich- didnt expect to be this good! He had back to back orders. The chicken tasted so good!!!!! Price is very reasonable!! Will definitely come back again. Much better than rustic bakery's Asian chicken sandwich.

I can't believe this place has been here for about a year, and I just discovered it! This is my new go to spot for a bahn mi-- the closest to the bahn mis that you can get in the city! And at $6 a sandwich, also the closest in price. Most other spots in Marin are double that! I've only had the pork sandwich and will have to try some others. Great crunchy bread that was fresh and warm, and the pork was tasty. All of the traditional fixings- I love the bigger pieces of pickled veggies. Bring your cash and plan to take it to go. There are a couple of small tables but it's pretty tight inside. Perfect to take for a picnic.

This new Ban Mi Sandwich place opened late 2021. This mom and pop place moved from Santa Rosa to San Rafael. This is the real deal if you want a good Vietnamese sandwich all for a great price of $6.00 each. A really good deal for so much flavor. They strictly focus on their sandwiches so don't expect anything else. Simple and good.

This hole in the wall is the only banh mi place in this area with sandwiches that are not bland. While yes they did adjust the flavor to match the customers in the area, it's still pretty good. I usually go for the Tofu Veggie Sandwich-- which to those ignorant customers -- this place uses shredded fried tofu, not chunks of tofu. It's a Vietnamese vegetarian adaptation of shredded pork. So if you don't know, then maybe Google it before writing an ignorant 1 star review on Yelp accusing the store of not giving you tofu. They pack a ton of it, so as you eat, every bite is filled with that yummy fried tofu. Also, I've tried the Sunny Side Egg Sandwich before which is good, but I feel needs a little more sauce. They've also cut down their menu by a lot which is sad but understandable. Overall, great banh mi place for Sonoma County.

Best Banh Mi place in Santa Rosa hands down! The other restaurants here offering this are just not authentic and are merely attempting to remake this Vietnamese classic with a Western twist. Coming from an actual Vietnamese person who has eaten hundreds of Banh Mis in her life - from all over Vietnam to the Bay Area classic spots, this is the best you'll find for Sonoma County. Of course if you're willing to make the drive to San Jose, nothing compares to that (at least here in the US), but here locally, Thuan Phat is always my go to. I feel like the negative reviews on here are from people who aren't used to eating Banh Mi or are not familiar with how they're supposed to taste/be like. Everyone who enjoys Banh Mi should definitely come here! It is not a fancy restaurant, just a small family owned business, but the food is delicious and authentic so that's all that matters! I just wished their hours are longer because I keep missing it by the time I get off work! read more

This is your classic whole in the wall spot for class banh mis. Don't come here to find anything other than consistently yummy Vietnamese sandwiches. You will find random stuff for sale, along with a beverage case and service with a smile. Sorry ate my banh mi too fast forgot to take a picture. It will be the one of the most filling and tasty sammie you will get for under $5.00. Just do it! read more

Is this the best banh mi ever? No. Is it the best banh mi around in Marin, and still a damn good banh mi in general? I would say yes. I almost always get their combination ham banh mi, which has excellent cold cuts in it and a healthy amount of pate. The pickled vegetables are abundant but not overpowering, it's a rather sweet and mellow crunch. I'm mixed on the baguette bread itself- it's CLOSE to that delicate, shattering crunch of a good Vietnamese French baguette, but it's not quite there. I wish they would toast the baguettes more, because by the end the bread is a bit soft and has broken into multiple pieces. Having said that, the banh mi overall is very good, and at around $7 per sandwich, it's the best deal you'll get around here. (Cash only). P.S: the cafe sua da here is EXCELLENT. They use the type of coffee beans that you would get from Vietnam, so it's real authentic and tasty. I say it's even better than their banh mi tbh. Service is friendly and fast. Come here for a lunch or brekkie option, they're a great staple here in SR. read more

I love this place!!!! Same quality and delicious banh mi (sandwiches) as from when they were located in Santa Rosa. Ignore the naysayer below haha, who is really complaining about nonsense when a new great ethnic business has opened up in the area!! -- anywho, I really missed having $6 banh mi after moving out of the north bay. It's a very affordable delicious meal , and always always hits the spot ~ At $6 in the climate, that is insanely affordable compared to $15 sandwiches elsewhere!! Insane I always order the grilled pork banh mi. It is warm / heated grilled marinated pork with the perfect amount of juiciness, on soft French bread that lightly crunches as you eat it, balanced with lightly blanched cucumber, carrot , daikon, and slices of raw jalapeño to add a slight kick. read more

So delicious and fresh! The bread roll of my grilled chicken sandwich was amazing and tasted like it was baked hours ago. All of the veggies were gorgeous and crisp. I finished the sandwich on my drive home or I would have included a photo. I will be eating here several more times this week. $6.50 for a sandwich!!! read more

Cute little shop! Super friendly, Super Fast, Super Quality. I got the Tofu/Veggie Banh Mi and a Coconut Juice. I was expecting slabs of tofu, but the tofu is shredded and fried, SO flavorful and good! Reminds me of grilled onions or shredded pork! The sandwich is stuffed with quality fresh ingredients and comes on a classic crispy french roll. I could eat a billion of these. This place does it right. Can't wait to go back. They accept Cash and Card. Parking was a little tough, but street parking around the corner was easy. read more

Highly, highly recommend this place (of all the banh mi places in SF and Marin). This place is a gem in the North Bay. I've been to both locations, but live closer to the San Rafael deli. As a Vietnamese who grew up eating banh mi (not "bahn" - please stop misspelling this word!, although I understand "bahn" has been spelled like this to make it phonetically easier to pronounce), I vouch for this place. It is wholeheartedly the best banh mi place in the Bay area. Growing up, I lived in a close-knit Vietnamese-American community, and my mother and another lady in our village sold banh mi, so I have a discerning taste for banh mi. This place is totally legit and super authentic. The french bread is just the right texture (light and flaky, but not dense inside). The actual bread in a Vietnamese banh mi is not the same as a french baguette that is more often dense and chewy (and thanks to French colonizers, they left the Vietnamese with french bread and amazing architecture). I know many places in the Bay area that serve more dense baguettes for banh mi, which isn't authentic. The filling is perfect and the right amount with no special brown sauce or gravy (again used by other banh mi places). Vietnamese banh mi filling is not sweet, but has a slight tang and citrusy flavor from the pickled carrots and daikon, and the creaminess comes from homemade butter-mayonnaise and pate. This is the perfect example of Vietnamese banh mi. I don't normally write reviews, but I want to spread the word that this place serves very good banh mi. Another added value is the price of a banh mi here, that is 30% less than the price of other places that are now charging $10-13 per banh mi. The owners are super sweet, too. If you happen to find yourself in the North Bay and craving a banh mi, or want to find an authentic example, this place is a must! (There is also a Share Tea next door if you want to couple your banh mi with boba tea.) Note: Cash-only establishment, no frills, limited menu (doesn't include many different fillings), and limited, but free parking out front for 10 minutes (food comes out fast though). read more

First time here - loved it. Rainy weekend late lunch idea, drove up shortly after someone had almost driven their car through the front of the shop, thought I'd have to go to a different spot. Police, tow trucks, and glass everywhere. But the owners were super friendly and accommodating, and had one of the best bahn mi sandwiches I've had in a long time. I'll be back. read more

Yes to authentic, delicious and affordable bahn mi! This friendly new owner (since about a couple years ago) has really impressed. I love this place. Usually get the chicken and it's a perfect blend of ingredients. The bread really makes a difference and their's is excellent and tasty. Service is fast. When a place has reviews out of this galaxy, I definitely have to come see what it's all about. What's a Banh Mi ? I dont know ? Should I try it ? Sure.... why not ? I went with the # 2 BBQ pork sandwich. It's crazy to think that this sandwich comes in just under $4. How is that possible?I mean, what year are we in ? This sandwich has a sweetness to it. The jalepenos gave it some spice. And the bread was a delicious crunch. This guys are super speedy, fast and efficient. I also wanted Spring Rolls. I saw some on a rack, un refrigerated. One of the best Bahn Mi sandwiches I've had. I had the #2-pork and the #5-pig ears and tongue. I liked the #2 better but both were fantastic. The price is insane! $3.95 for this delicious sandwich! The man that runs the place addresses all the customers as, "My friend!". His sandwiches are the best of the best. You want that pork banh mi that the Vietnamese are famous for? You like that crunch of freshly baked bread that one expects from the very best of the best of Vietnamese sandwiches? Well, it is here my friend. You can go for the sandwich, but you can also go because the proprietor is so friendly and his disposition is infectiously pleasant that one cannot leave Thuan Phat without feeling better. Have you ever eaten something in slow motion in an attempt to savor each juicy, delectable bite? The #2 BBQ pork Bahn mi is a fantastic sandwich. Coming in at just under $4 it is a really good deal also!!! I really enjoy the Vietnamese coffee here as well!!! In all I think I paid about $6.50 or $6.75 for a really great lunch! And the service is really good also! I highly suggest trying this place if you haven't already! read more

SO GOOD. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, as it should be! You get the perfect ratio of salty and sweet with the veggies and meat (or egg or tofu!). Perfect meal for anytime of the day. They also offer Vietnamese coffee (very strong and sweet) which is a must get! Service is impeccable. Love the owner, he always brightens my day with his cheerful attitude. I feel like all the bad reviews don't really know what a banh mi is (or some even tend to be low key racist... the dude definitely speaks English well contrary to some reviews smh). If you're looking to go to a fast food joint, go here instead! The price is very reasonable, you're eating way better, and you're helping out a small business! Like a lot of other restaurants and bakeries, they prefer you to pay in cash but they do have a card scanner if you ask. Amazing, casual place. Amazing deals. Friendly service. read more

Worst THe Worst sandwich! What the hack is wrong with this ppl who wrote all the great reviews!!? The best VIT sandwich is in Uion City . Once you eat their sandwiches, you all will understand how junkyard this place is! I hate getting fooled and ripped off! I even paid extra for extra veggies and it's all old stuff they use. We are back in town and decided to call and see if they were open....they were...YAY!!! We drive over to give it another go. We ordered 3 sandwiches, all were the perfect combination of sweet, salty and spicy. The bread was perfect, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. We added a Vietnamese coffee to help keep is cool and alert in this heat wave Labor Day weekend. Everything was completely on point and we will be back!!! read more

Still good, just had the #12 tofu and veggie, and the #5 get break bread sammiches. I added egg to both cuz well... it is just yummier to me that way. Sooo fortunate to have stumbled across this place. I love Banh Mi sandwiches, and always consider myself fortunate when I get to eat them in my travels. I've had favorites, but never considered any to be the best, until now. The number two pork Banh Mi is perfection. The bread, the pickled veggies, and the meat couldn't be any better. Couple that with the nice man at the counter, and the ridiculously cheap price of $4.50, including tax, and there isn't anything to expect other than joy. read more

Goodness gracious, could you get a fresher $3.75 meal? (#2) lemongrass marinated pork, crispy and soft bun, freshly chopped veggies. Yiss pleassee! The family that owns this lil spot is so friendly and the service is quick! 5-10 min for sure. But they also take online orders, people call in sandwiches here all day long. Food: The pork sandwich tastes really good. The meat, veggie, and bread ratios are just right. Only one pepper in my sandwich so not too spicy. The bread is not as good as Saigon Sandwich shop in SF TL but still yummy. Drink: Vietnamese coffee is good. My friend said it was too sweet for them but I liked it. Store: The set up is more for takeout orders. You order at the counter and there are only 2 tables that each seat 2 people. Super small. Parking: There's a small parking lot but you can't park there long. Street parking is 2 hours. Payment (SEE WARNING): They accept credit card and use Square. WARNING!! CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS! I'm not familiar with Square so I don't know if this is standard practice, but they charged an EXTRA 5% SQUARE TAX!! Nowhere at the counter stated that there's a 5% fee to use a credit card and the person at the counter didn't mention it either. He pressed all the calculations quickly on his phone without really letting you see what he's charging you, and they don't offer a paper receipt either. The only options are email or text message receipts and the text message is just a link that you have to click on (no details of the charges) so if you don't have internet access then you cannot question these charges at the time of service. You have to have internet access to click on the link to get to an image of your receipt, so by the time I had internet access I was very far from the store. Also they CHARGED THE WRONG HIGHER SALES TAX! The store is located in San Rafael and according to California Dept. of Tax & Fee Administration https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/taxes-and-fees/rates.aspx the sales tax should be 9.25% but they charged 10.25%. The receipt shows a Santa Rosa address and even though sales tax should reflex the address the store is in, Santa Rosa's sales tax is also 9.25% so I have no idea where they justify 10.25%. read more
