Worst service I have truly ever received. Period. No contest. Not only horrible but as I left the barista literally hurled an insult at me for asking for my money back politely. Briefly....I stopped in and simply asked for a triple espresso. I was told by the cashier "we don't do a tripel, we only pull singles or doubles." I said "well, can you pull three singles or one double and one single and put them in one cup?" Dumbfounded she said "No, I'll have to charge you for two doubles." Obviously the math was too difficult for her....I paid close to $6 for what should anywhere else be a $3 drink, and waited, and waited, and waited...after ten minutes I went to the counter and said "Is my espresso ready." I was told by the barista making drinks (in a very brusque manner) "there are drinks ahead of you SIR" "sorry dude....I'll wait." So I waited and waited and waited....ten minutes MORE I went (now twenty minutes) I went to the confused cashier gir and said "Look, this is ridiculous, I just wanted a simple espresso.....that takes less than a minute to make...now I just want my money back......the guy making the drink turns and quickly makes my drink and plops it in front of me at the register.....I said "I no longer want it as this had just been horrible." The cashier I HOPE issed a refund to my card and I started to walk out....I just wanted to get out of this sarcastic, rude place...BUT as I approached the door....the guy who makes the drinks sarcastically shouts across the room "HAVE A NICE DAY"........really? I was recently visiting Denver for work and stumbled in one afternoon. I ordered an espresso macchiato, which was superb, and promptly found myself there every day for the next 8 days until leaving town. The baristas at Thump are top-notch, and they crafted each drink (cappuccino, espresso, macchiato or pour-over) I ordered to perfection, pulling lovely shots, steaming great micro-foam and pouring excellent latte art. As a bonus most espresso drinks include a small sparkling water. Simply delicious. The location is clean, spacious, and has a lot of seating, and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. It's pretty simple, if you are a fan of good coffee then you need to go to Thump. I'm a lover of the vanilla lattes and their vanilla lattes might be the best I've ever had. They have some homemade vanilla recipe that they use and it might actually give me a minor orgasm when I'm having my coffee. Just kidding, but seriously. Also a great selection of pastries. I really liked Thump when I first came here, but I don't think the barista that I always used to see still works there and if he does he's lost his touch. It was very good for a while, I had delicious cappuccinos and lattes, but the last two or three times I have been there, my drink honestly sucked (burnt and sour espresso). I hate saying that because it was so good when I first started going there and it's such a nice and inviting open space, but I hate bad lattes. It makes my soul cry. I'm not even supposed to have coffee, but I love it so much I do anyways, but only once per week at the most and I just can't risk getting a bad latte on my once a week indulgence. I'm also not sure that it's kosher to have a beard down to your stomach with nothing keeping it away from food and drinks for customers, but I don't know all the rules so that could just be my germaphobia. Update: We gave it another chance due to unforeseen circumstances and my latte was good. My SO still wasn't satisfied with his americano though. It is a nice place to try and get some work done as it has lots of natural light and quite a few places to sit. Well, I for one am not drinking the Kool-Aid about this place. It's the second time I've been here. First time I had to basically sit in someone's lap. But I figured - well that's just because it's a cool place! I'll give it another shot. So I came back because I remembered they had food. So I got the $8 proscuitto toast. Which turned out to be one piece of toast with little torn bits of proscuitto on it and a hard-boiled egg crumbled on top. For $8. I expected something worth my time. I work daily from coffee houses - so I bounce around a lot. The wifi was so slow that even after my lackluster toast, I gave up after 20 minutes and just went elsewhere. Not a great place to work from - unless you're so into the hipster scene you don't know who you are anymore. They were friendly. Which I do really appreciate - so that's where the only star I give them comes from. Won't be back. read more

I love Thump. Located just a short walk away from my home. I go there for the coffee of course and also the iced green Jasmine tea. I must say that Thump is an excellent neighbor. Very clean, very friendly, and a very welcome addition to our neighborhood. My cat also appreciates Thump. This is where I purchase his milk. All Natural Colorado Fresh. Be still my beating heart, Thump has arrived. Straight outta Bend, Oregon this coffee roaster is slinging beans and filling cups on the corner of 13th & Downing. I don't think I'm alone when I say that the neighborhood welcomes this beautifully curated coffee shop with open arms, since our side of Cap Hill/Cheesman has been decidedly under-served by the coffee gods. If you prefer to brew your coffee at home, Thump sells their beans for $1/ounce and you can buy them in whatever quantity you would like. When I was last in, they currently had three different roasts, which I am guessing may increase after they've been open longer and have their in-house roasting equipment up and running. Along with a bag of Honduran beans, I ordered my weekend morning go-to drink, a non-fat latte. It was a well balanced latte with an enjoyable about of espresso and milk without a lot of foam. Pretty latte art, too! While I stuck to coffee, they had some pretty little pastries for sale, as well as some Noosa yogurt (I was really excited about this!). Conveniently located next to my favorite liquor store (Hugo's), I envision that this open and inviting coffee shop will become a hub for folks on our side of the 'hood. Why do I keep doing this to myself? Being near my home, I've given Thump a number of chances, and yet still, almost every time I leave disappointed or frustrated in some way. Every time, as I leave I say to myself, "This is worthy of review. I should really stop going back." But then I don't write the review, and I keep going back. I don't think I can do it anymore. On one hand, their coffee can be phenomenal. Their espresso blend is one of the better I've tasted -- it does well with milk and on its own -- and their single origins range from very solid to fantastic. On the other hand, their baristas make so many bizarre little mistakes that make basically all of my visits unbearably frustrating. Worse than the mistakes themselves, tho, is the systematic failure to correct those mistakes when pointed out. [There were two paragraphs of specific previous disappointments here, but Yelp told me my review was too damn long, so I deleted them. Basically, they on a regular basis take way too long to do things and suck at communicating what's going on. Five minutes? No problem. Ten minutes? Okay every once in awhile, as long as you tell me what's up. Fifteen minutes? Twenty minutes? No. Never. For any reason. No.] Let me jump to today and begin by saying this mistake is in a sense relatively tiny, and the problem lies not in its making, but rather in its correction. It's a chilly morning, and brought my glass travel mug. By the time I made it from my house to the shop (about four blocks), the glass had become quite cold. I ordered an eight ounce breve latte to go in my cup. There are not a lot of hard and fast rules for being a barista, and there's a lot of disagreements about the correct methods of pulling espresso and building drinks, but here's something everybody agrees on: always preheat the cup. That's it, end of sentence. There are no "preheat the cup if..." rules. Just preheat the cup. There are even shops that preheat paper cups, which -- admittedly -- is insane, but I'm with them in spirit. But plastic, ceramic, glass, metal, etc.? Preheat it. And I shouldn't have to ask for such a thing. So here I am with a fairly cold glass cup watching the barista pull some shots and steam some milk for some drink, maybe mine, I don't know. As soon as he was done steaming the milk, he grabs my cup and dumps the espresso in. Before he has a chance to start pouring the half & half, I stop him and request that he preheat the cup. The way I see it, there is one acceptable response to that question from a customer: "Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I totally forgot. Let me preheat your cup and re-pull the espresso." His response? "Your cup was already pretty warm, but okay." Snotty, unhelpful and false, but okay. Dump out the espresso and start over. What did he do? Not that. Instead, he poured the espresso from my travel cup into a demitasse, filled my cup with hot water, dumped out the hot water, poured the espresso from the demitasse back into my cup, spilling at least a quarter of it if not more on the counter in the process, then finished building the drink with the half & half. My only consolation was that he made no attempt to scrape the espresso he spilled on the counter into my cup. Unfortunately, that's not consolation enough. I want to say, "Step it up, Thump! I'll be back when you get it together," but if I finally make the rational decision and stop going, how will I ever know that things have gotten better? So instead I say, "There are things I like a lot about you, but I can barely see those things through your flaws. I know there are plenty of people who can love you as you are, but I'm just not one of them. We weren't meant to be. Goodbye forever, Thump. Now, please stop texting me, it's really weirding Pablo's out." read more

I think there is a distinct dichotomy when it comes to coffee shops; the first part being a shop that uses whatever beans, sells enough random stuff to be a 7-11, and contains half the world's sweetener in the form of artificially flavored syrups. These places I call "ex-presso shops" because the clientele doesn't know the difference in pronunciation, which is A-OK, but quality rarely enters in the conversation for these places. These spots aren't all bad they serve a purpose like everything else; cheap, quick coffee with a lax warm atmosphere where customers can freely request strawberry mochas and "strong coffee". The other side of this dichotomy is the hole-in-the-wall, organic, the fair-trade locally roasted beans, the strong relationship between roasters and farmers and where the coffee pickers are treated like humans and not machines in the way of one's cup of Folgers. These are typically known as "specialty coffee" places because that's sort of the norm. Specialty Coffee places groan at flavored coffee drinkers and with a sigh explain to the customer what a REAL macchiato is. Thump is quite a different story. Now Thump to me is such a fine mix of this dichotomy. Cherry-picking the best attributes of both coffee shop subdivisions. The atmosphere begs one to come in and chat; the seating area is large and dynamic with students, regulars, newcomers, etc. One can share a table while socializing with friends and strangers alike or sit in the more secluded couch area where that "specialty coffee" atmosphere comes in. It is one of the most welcoming coffee shop and the baristas are top notch and a pleasure to exchange words with. I often think that the term "welcoming" has an air of being kitsch or gauche, but Thump heralds the modern look and with a simplistic and minimalistic design that meshes seamlessly and proclaims its high rank in the coffee industry. As a Portland native I am fairly versed in the specialty coffee culture. Thump made me feel immediately at ease and suspended my reality of being away from Portland. It has all of the perks of an excellent, hip, and quality PDX coffee shop with far less rain. I would suggest Thump to everyone and anything, even my worst enemies. One barista in particular truly exemplifies all that is great and wonderful with Thump. Matt Stevens pours some of the best latte art available in all of Colorado and is just starting what I can assume will be a celebrity-like career in specialty coffee. Solely based off of his knowledge and talent, Matt would quickly become a cornerstone to the most prestigious and renowned specialty coffee shop. He is an integral component to the Thump experience. He is kind and perfectly chatty making you feel at home, but never suspending your desire for one of the highest quality coffee drinks. He is a professor in espresso and a maestro in extraction. Never have I gone to a coffee shop and felt entirely blown away by the amount of knowledge and facts that a barista knows. Matt in his recent yet esteemed career has gleamed an overwhelming amount of coffee knowledge from aesthetics to the chemistry and everything in between. I give Thump and Matt Stevens five stars forever, or at least until the sun dies out. read more
