FINALLY I got my crab cake. My sole intention in DC (besides visiting my best friend in the world) was to eat as many crab cakes as I could get my hands on. Somehow (clearly not by my intentions), I did not get a single crab cake until 2 hours before my flight. On our first trek to Georgetown, we saw Thunder Burger and I was intrigued. It looked like a pub I would visit in London. The next time we were in Gtown, we stopped in and I'm so glad we did! I really like the decor: it's sort of a modern vintage feel in the old Georgetown style of low ceilings (and high prices). So when I we came across this place that had o many options to build your own burger with I was REALLY excited. I went with caramalized red onion relish, havarti and remoulade sauce. The host, who turned out to also be our waiter, looked really pissed that we walked in soon before the kitchen closed. We felt that he was annoyed that we took longer than a minute to look over the menu. Went here a while back with some friends when Johnny rockets was closed for some random reason. It has a some what European old house interior and very attentive waiters. Our waiter was very cool he explained everything popular on the menu including drinks as well. I got a cheeseburger which came with friends for $15 ($14 if you don't get cheese and other various toppings like mushrooms). Thunder Burger is an upscale burger spot and the menu, decor, and atmosphere reflect that. Although they're known for their burgers, there were a good amount of other sandwich and entree options. I made my own burger combo w/bacon, pepper jack, and bbq sauce. So good! I had the sweet potato fries as my side and personally liked them better than the regular ones. At first I had no clue that it was a burger joint. The Ed Hardy-like font on the front that said "Thunder Bar" was a little bit of a turn off at first- there were images of Tattoo Bar. Add to the fact that it is on M St. in Georgetown, and upon first impressions pegged it as a GU frat place. However, never judge a book by its cover nor a restaurant by it's font, apparently. I begrudgingly went on a Sunday afternoon after the brunch crowd to find that they serve a pretty amazing happy hour for a Sunday. Many of the draft beers are half off, and there is a generous happy hour bar food menu. The beer selection is really good- with equal amounts of local breweries represented as well as other standards. I also like the fact that they change it up every once in awhile. It's nice to try different beers on tap. Added plus is that they usually have a seasonal on draft as well. The fried calamari and nachos come in a generous portion considering it is happy hour, and $5. You could just sit there at the bar drinking a Lost Rhino IPA and the nachos and call it a night. But the burgers are also great and even though they are on the higher price end, there is a large selection of free toppings to choose from. Think upscale Five Guys. We also went back to Georgetown the next day and had brunch. On both occasions, the food was good. I really liked the fact that the bar was fully stocked LOL. I went here for lunch / brunch on Sunday morning with a friend. We got to the restaurant at 1pm and had no problem getting a table right away. My friend ordered breakfast food, but I ordered the turkey burger with fries. The fries were nice and crispy, but not greasy, and well seasoned. The turkey burger came with cheese, avocado, and shredded apple. It was an interesting and great combination and was also well seasoned. Turkey burgers can be hit or miss since turkey has less flavor than beef, but you would have never known it with this burger. There were a lot of other interesting and creative burgers on the menu that I'd love to try. I'm sure I'll be back again soon for another round. I think Thunder's food far out-butt-kicks the likes of the recent casual and expensive burger joints like Five Guys, Shakeshack, BGR, etc. It might not get served to you all that fast, but thats where the great bottle and draft beer list comes in handy! They also have a killer tuna burger and all the typical bar fare. It feels as if every time I go to Thunder with a friend, a date, or by myself, that some kind of weird and wacky patron strikes up a conversation at the bar. Is (s)he being friendly, creepy, or both? Every once in a while a restaurant will pull me in solely based on their business sign on their building. If you think about it, it's the first thing you see anyway. I've walked past this place numerous times but never had the time to stop in. Well I finally got that opportunity and was elated. The doors. I never comment on no stinking doors but I have to. Why on earth are they so slim? They are the size of a double door refrigerator! I had my big satchel and a shopping bag with me and I had to shimmy my way into the restaurant. Not fun. If you are on the thicker, fuller side, you will probably have to open BOTH doors to enter. This is a heads up. Soon as your enter the bar is there. It's a pretty decent size bar. The bar chairs are cool. They have spikes at the top of the backrest. My first thought that came to mind about this place was Purple Rain. No it's not like pictures of Prince riding around on a motorcycle singing but it's sorts rock and roll with a softer edge. Add the fact that the booths are purple and black velvet and bam, Purple Rain. I love everything about it actually. It seems to be separated by decor. Further towards the back the decor changes which I feel denotes the dining area. There is an upstairs that I didn't venture into but soon come Now the food. I ordered the O Fortuna with a side of apple potato salad. The O Fortuna is seared (rare) ahi tuna with watercress, tomato, caramelized onion and wasabi mayo. It was light and and it hit the spot. I wish it had more wasabi because the tuna steak itself had no flavor. If you are gonna sear a tuna you should at least season it generously considering it's rare. The apple potato salad I was disappointed with. I maybe bit into 3 pieces of small bite sized apples. The was no seasoning at all and was as bland as ever. The potatoes should have been cooked a little longer. Nothing worse than rock hard potatoes. Will I give them another try. Absolutely because they have quite of few other items on the menu I was going back and forth with. I don't eat burgers but for those of you that do, you have a great selection to chose from. I have this black cardigan with wings on the back that kinda looks like it came from Ed Hardy, but it did not.
