Thunder Burger was a random spur of the moment choice this afternoon while walking around Georgetown doing some shopping. The atmosphere was nice and the hostess seated us all the way in the back. The room had old books on the walls and a sort of ivy/vines that gave the room an interesting feel. It was hot out so we both just stuck with water. Our server was fairly slow and seemed annoyed we did not want to drink anything and that we did not know what we wanted to eat the first time he arrived. We both settled on the Love Me Tender Burger. Kobe Beef, Tomato, Remoulade, Aged White Cheddar, Lettuce, and we both added Applewood Bacon. I added some red onion to mine and held the remoulade. These burgers were delicious and cooked perfectly as ordered. The buns were excellent as well. The french were cooked crisp and were very tasty as well. Cheeseburgers are a rarity in my diet so when I decide to go with one, I want it to taste like the burger did today at Thunder. I would have rated them with 4 stars but the service was pretty bad today. By the end of our meal we were the last people in the back area. It took around 20 minutes to get our burgers and fries out to us. Our server checked on us one time during our meal and after we asked for the check it took him around 10 minutes to get it over to us. The restaurant was only half full. I realize we may not have been the ideal "table" but $40 for two cheeseburgers should come with better service than what we received today. Next time I will probably sit at the bar. Definitely would want to go back despite the poor service. 4 stars for the burger, 2 stars for the service. read more

Food: Delicious! Drinks: Didn't have any- but the beer list consists of a small selection of great specialty brews. Staff: Friendly and attentive- not as engaging as I typically like, but great regardless. Ambiance: So unique and really creates the vibe of this place My brother took me here on a random Wednesday and what a great treat that was! The food was delicious, the decor is unique to any other restaurant in Georgetown, and the service was great. Definitely try the Kobe burger- and yes, it will NOT cost you $7 to get this burger. Not bad, wait was about 20 minutes to be seated. Average I guess for a Saturday. I ordered a "sweet Caroline" which is a pulled pork sandwich, side of coleslaw and an appetizer of chili fries. Pork was awesome, chili fries were a bit soggy, which is expected with chili on top. Coleslaw was an upset, but overall food was great. I give Thunder Burger & Bar 3 stars. Good burgers. Okay prices. Good variety of burgers and toppings. I am a fan of the regular thunder burger as well as the sweet potato fries. However, the other burgers I have tried are not as consistent. Therefore, I just stick to the usual thunder burger. Additionally, the service is not always satisfactory. It takes a little while to get seated usually and sometimes it can take up to 10 to 15 minutes for our waiter/waitress to show up at our table. Granted Thunder Burger & bar can be packed, I think that this wait time is unacceptable. As an aside, good place for college students. read more

Thee of us decided to stop in this restaurant after attending the Inauguration ceremony in January 2013 and it filled our stomachs! I got the Learning To Fly burger and the boys each got a Kobe beef burger. They were pricey but cooked the way we asked and very juicy. I also substituted the fries for cranberry coleslaw and it was a good choice. I did not like the plates that the food arrived on. They were narrow rectangles and the burger t barley fit on it. Disclosure: Our meal was the owner's treat. That said, we got to try anything we liked, so I'll share our best bites and sips. Try at least 4 beers without getting drunk! They have 4.5 oz pours of every draft beer so you can try them all. I recommend the "especially smooth" IPA suggested by the server. 1. Caesar Salad w/ Steak, medium rare - The meat could have stood to be much higher quality but was much better with some additional cheese from the platter. 2. Chef's cheese platter - The cheeses on this plate went excellently with the steak Caesar salad. They should consider throwing the cheese directly onto the salad. 3. Crab sliders - They were okay, but elevated once coated with the chili. 4. Small beef chili - We separated the mini crab cakes from the sliders and dipped them into the beef chili, ignoring the bread and the corn chips. This is an expensive appetizer hack, but a delicious one. 5. Big Pimpin - We split this burger with sweet potato fries. We were pretty full by then so took half home in a doggie bag. I would say stay away from the dessert menu. Portions are too large and nothing blew us away. All in all, a fun evening! read more

We trekked out to Georgetown in the bitter cold last Weds for Lunch at Thunder. All the reviews said 'try the jerk shrimp!', so we did. Ehh, nothing special, kinda dry & could have used some heat. We ordered the Elk burger and the Falafel burger, and these were delicious! Well seasoned, perfectly cooked elk was juicy and flavorful. The falafel was zesty and creamy and all of the accompaniments were just right. I really like the apple potato salad. It looked like there was only one server for lunch, we sat in the front and she was pretty busy. There were quite a few tables seated in the back, so the server and manager were running back and forth while the busboy did a lot of standing around. read more

From the moment you walk in the door you are treated with the most comfortable ambience of any restaurant in DC. The layout gives off an old tavern vibe with a medieval vibe. Not happy at all! These people are the rudest bar patrons ever. First, me and my friend just ordered food and had 10 min. to kill before it would be ready from another venue and decide to walk across the room to get wine. So we sat down luke any other customer and was sitting for almost 2 min b4 a guy rudely said "You have come over here to sign in!" Like we knew that? But being covid and all complied and the guy couldn't even sign us in properly. Either he was deaf of just dumb or both cause my friend gave him his number 5 times then we sat down. My friend had the device in hand that lights up when our food is ready but had enough time to order wine buy using the phone pad to see the menu and before my fried could screenshot the menu was snatched by this rude mouse looking Asian who probably weighed in at 75lbs shouted "You can't eat food here from another venue!" Like we would actually do that? A black guy finally came over and served us when I asked for the menu back. The recommended house wine was terrible too. Only drunk 3 sips and then our food was ready and we left unsatisfied to never return. We should have went to the other wine bar that looked more appealing above them. As hard as it is to make a burger stand out these days, this place exceeded expectations. The flavors of their burgers are unparalleled to competitors. Even their pulled pork was exceptional! Their fries and sauces are outstanding. Their extensive beer list makes for the perfect accompaniment to all of the options on their menu. I was less impressed with their brunch showing a few weeks back (simple breakfast dishes, limited creativity, not a huge bargain), but the burgers were tremendous. My boyfriend ordered the showdown at the boarder burger which was spectacular. The meat was juicy and the chili had huge chunks of steak as opposed to ground meat.. the fries were crispy and not greasy. I ordered their special of the day which was advertised as meatloaf with sour cream gravy which was not that great. I guess I made the mistake of going to burger joint and ordering meatloaf.. the meat was dry and the sauce was dry and lightly spread on top of the meat. Although my dish was a fail the burger and amazing service( our waitress was sweet and super attentive) are the reasons I will come back in future. I tried this place for the first time yesterday. We ordered the Spinach and artichoke dip and rib appetizer. Those ribs are the best I've ever had. They fell off the bone, they were sweet and filled with flavor. The thunder burger I ate was a lot but it was so good. Fries were tasty. I'd come back to try the desserts and full rib dinner. I had a sip of when doves cry and it was actually good. This place is surrounded by shops. It's a great place to go after some shopping. read more

Many of the Georgetown restaurants have the same atmosphere - this definitely does not! Having lived in DC for almost a decade I've experienced many restaurants in the area, especially Georgetown. This has such a great feel to it. Casual and cozy. I love the back room as well, you kind of feel like you're in Bavaria. The food was good and for the previous comments about the service . . . they haven't even been open for three weeks now! EVERY restaurant has growing pains when hiring new staff. Be assured, if you are unsatisfied with something, the manager will take care of it you just have to speak up. He was available to all tables and I saw him step in when a new server needed some help. (As someone with waiting experience that means a lot because they just want the patrons to be happy.) Our server was friendly, the manager was wonderful, and the food came out rather quickly. Drinks were solid and I wish I could go back for more after they install the rest of the beers they'll have on tap. Just go - it's fun! Well, I have mixed feelings about this place. Two stars, according to Yelp, means "Meh. I've experienced better," and that sums it up for me. However, let me break it down. BEER Selection - 4 Stars. They have some good, unique drafts as well as a few nice bottled (and canned) selections. Read on for the "why", but I forgot the name of my beer. It was in a 16oz can. An American IPA, served in a tulip glass. medium amber color. Smooth drinking, medium bitterness. SERVICE - 2 Stars. Slow, slow, slow. No water until five minutes after we sat down. Placed drink order - one beer at a table for three. Took another eight to ten minutes to get that. She did pour it at the table, which was nice, but she gave it to someone else at the table (I was the only one drinking anything other than water). Left one of my toppings off the burger I ordered. Took way too long - about 15 minutes from the time we were done - to get the check. Had to ask twice. Our server was nice, but she was not a polished server and just did not seem to be too interested in being there. FOOD - 3 Stars. "A-OK", in Yelp terms. I liked the sides - cranberry slaw, fries (which were perfectly cooked), apple potato salad. Very creative. The burgers were fine, but they would not stand out in a crowd. Wasabi Mayo is a terrific condiment for fries or the burger. Ok, add all that up and divide by three, and you would think this is a three star review. Well, I am leaning towards two stars because I would not recommend this place and am not likely to go back. We've been here 3 times in the last 2 months and have enjoyed the atmosphere, the attentive (not obnoxious) service, the varied and tasty menu offerings and the late night crowd. The burgers and sandwiches are REALLY good, and so are the appetizers. They have different beer offerings all the time, so they don't always have everything on the menu. But if your interested in a place that does put a focus on bringing in new things, including specialty beers, you won't mind if the last guy thoroughly enjoyed the last of the beer you were going to order. I'm really glad we've had great servers and service there. Last time I was there I was disturbed by server who was giving an unecessarily hard time to a couple next to us because her ID was her Spanish passport and not a US issued ID. The lady was as confused as I was at his unwarranted harrassment of her as he was serving her. Why he went on and on about it was just dumb and not like the other staff there. Burgers are pretty good and the sweet potato fries with the ginger aoili compliments them perfectly. I usually get the burger with brie on it and it really is a great combination. Their service, however, is always hit or miss. Personally, I think the ambiance is a little to dark and loud, and drink are a little over priced. The food was fantastic! I had a generous portion of crisp sweet potato fries, and the best burger I've ever eaten (they were cool about leaving off the bun for my grain-free'ness). I had my first visit to Georgetown today. I was disappointed after going into a place called Thunder Burger. I walked into a empty restaurant. I asked are you open they said yes. A black man and woman were standing at the desk. The black man whispered to the woman. Without saying anything to me she took me to a small table next to the front door. I sat down, the air-conditioner was blowing on me and I said it was too cold. I decided to sit at the bar. She looked at him like she was looking for approval. I looked at him and said is that OK? He said yes. Mind you he never welcomed me into the restaurant. A few minutes later a group of young white women walked into the restaurant he spoke loudly hello ladies! How many are there? Went here for Sunday brunch with my son. Good wings, good service. Bartender knew what he was doing and held it down. He had a little mix up with my order but handle the situation like a boss. The "noodles" on the "Thai" salad were cracker sticks! Very misleading to have it advertised as noodles on the menu. Asked for the bison burger meat on it and they charged me an additional $13, even though steak was only $8?? Not worth $25 in the slightest, plate of crackers, lettuce and a burger patty. I must say the blonde waiters (with the accent )have ruined the experience for us for many reasons. The waiters were rude in general and so unfriendly.
