Again, was only served 1 piece of toast per plate ( still don't get it, as most all places give you 2 pieces) so I ordered another piece of toast. This visit was superior to our last visit, so I asked our waiter, Carlos, if there was a new cook. He replied yes, I told him good and explained our last disappointing experience. Having arrived in the early hours of Albuquerque, I took a 6 hour nap on my rig before getting up and making my way into the building structure. I figured usually casinos either had a buffet of some sort or a steak house and that's how I wandered into the Thunder Road Steakhouse Cantina. I proceeded to order the Ribeye Steak - Grilled to a Medium, with a Baked Potato Side and for desert, Fried Ice Cream. Which I haven't had in ages since my days working at a hibachi in South Dallas. So unfortunately, the steak felt really old, not tender, and very dry, maybe I should have gone with a medium rare, but probably it'll be the same results. The Caesar Salad was cold, straight out of the fridge, I'd prefer if my salad thawed a little, but ok.. The loaded bake potato, was also very dry, lacking moisture, and despite having a lump of butter and sour cream, it felt very bland almost, lacking... probably shredded cheese..just wished the plate included something like corn or sauteed vegetables to dampen the over dryness. I think the highlight was the Fried Ice Cream; next time if I'm parked in the truck lot at the casino, ill come visit at night for the dinner menu. Was swiping through their Yelp pictures and see that Alot of people come here for the prime rib. Now...aside from the 3 stars out 5 for quality of food, this casino is actually not that bad; I think in terms of odds during a weekday, they don't set the probability on the slots too ridiculously low that you get Knocked Out in couple rounds. NGL, I actually think the management here has made the gaming pretty fair, (shocking right), and I actually look forward next time to allocate more time to just chill in the casino and game a bit more since this trip I'm in a hurry to offload a trailer back in San Bernardino County California. I ate here 2x and had drinks & guacamole one other time. 1st time here: I had a martini and it was perfect! My daughter had a mixed drink and she really enjoyed it. The highlight of the night... table side made guacamole! Oh my goodness. It was spot on! 2nd time- dinner before a concert and this place was PACKED and the servers were running their butts off. I had a salad and steak dinner. It was a HUGE serving! The highlight was my server, Mikey. Mikey made sure my water was full and checked on me often. If you have Mikey as your server you will be well cared for. 3rd time- I sat at the bar and had a martini ( again perfectly made) and the salmon thunder salad. Came in from a long drive wanting a sit down breakfast. Took a long time to be seated. Very apparent they are sorely understaffed. Cowboy breakfast was served fast; liked the homemade sausage, which tasted really good, and plenty of whipped butter for the pancakes. Only issue was part of the food got cold waiting for condiments. In their defense, waitstaff was interrupted by a Karen/Ken couple making a scene and requiring Manager assistance. Prices are affordable considering it's in a casino. Nice booths. read more

Going to the casino for a concert and decided to eat here before. The interior was a cross between a cantina & 50s era. The menu reflected it. Lots of seating on 2 floors so not much of a wait. Prime Rib was excellent, nice smoky flavor, Jalepeño Cornbread sweet, hot out of the oven, and not overwhelmed with jalepeños. Even tho the Rib Eye was it was a nice cut, tender and cooked as ordered it was disappointing. Neither it nor the accompanying broccolini came without any seasoning. Even some basic salt and pepper would have been an improvement. Since it advertises as a steak house they should have the steak part down - including seasoning. The place needs a service and kitchen polish ASAP. Ordered appetizer Elote corn, a house salad, and an 8 oz Filet. My dinner guest ordered Jalapeno Poppers, a house salad, and a 14 oz Ribeye. Because I can't drink alcohol, I asked the waiter for a non-alcoholic beer. That came right away. So far, So good. Our salads show up 15 minutes late. Ok, but where are the Poppers and the Elote? The waiter was evasive, which means he didn't put the order in. "They'll be right out!". Not really. The steaks arrived. The Ribeye was ok, but the Filet? 8.oz is about the size of your fist. The plate had a steak the size of a golf ball, if that! For $45 I expect a bit more. The manager came over, apologized, and tried to make things right, but not really. He said he already had asked for another steak to be made, and that should be out ASAP. I asked "What do I do with this one?" The manager said, "oh, you can just eat it". So now I have one small steak I can eat, and another normal sized one that I cannot eat because I'll be full, and I have to lug it back home with me, but we're driving for the next 4 hours and don't have any way to keep it cool. What a waste. The manager said the appetizers would be out ASAP as well. Kinda. When they arrived the Poppers were really sub-par. The Elote was simply a boiled ear of corn with a sauce on it. It's not that hard to make genuine Elote, with scorched kernels and cheese, not just mayonnaise. The bill came. It was "full freight", no discounting. We didn't ask, but rather than wasting another steak, and serving 4th rate appetizers, it would have been wiser just to knock one or two items off our joint bill, and sent over a drink or dessert. That's how it's done - elsewhere, but not here. If you can, go into town. There are plenty of better eateries out there. read more

The better choice if you plan on dining or even just having drinks at the casino. Had beers at the sports bar and this place is so much better. Beer is served in an iced glass and it's cold. My date had their margarita and she enjoyed very much as well. We mainly came here for their Prime Rib dinner. We opted for their mashed potatoes rather than a baked potato and so glad we did. It had some heat in it and that's the way I like it. The dining experience was great. They had Thursday night football on several TVs. Also, our waiter was on point. He understood we wanted to have drinks before ordering dinner. This was our third visit as we travel through Albuquerque every year. I was looking forward to their Hatch Chile Beans after tasting them last year. And boy were they good!!! "Worth the price of admission"! I ordered the rib eye steak with a baked potato and the beans. The steak was prepared perfectly medium rare as ordered, nice and tender as well as being juicy. Of course it was way too big so I boxed up half the steak, most of the potato and the beans so I'd have supper the next night as we travel. Our server was very good, efficient and friendly. I was not part of the VIP program according to the hostess so I stood by as other people were seated. They wanted me to sit at the bar. That is not what I went for. The steak was good and tender. Well, this place used to be wonderful considering it was in the middle of nowhere. I mean it's address was the BFE. But after closer examination, the service is slow. The bartenders are lazy. The kiosk staff is arrogant. There is no more little bad, just bad. Bands are not playing in the upper deck. So no more life music accompanies the venue. This place went from cool to sucks in 5 seconds. I completely amend my opinion of this place. The manager came out. She set the world right. She told the semi-offensive kiosk girl to not talk to us again. She made sure we what we needed and Ryan the bartender made sure I had the best old fashioned this side of Vegas. Which I'll have you know this is Considered a bar. Therefore no child menus. Which is fine. If food was amazing I would have given a better rating. Sad to say our fajitas were dry and meat was cut so thick it wasn't as good as we had here before. Plus one thing that really bothers me is they ask do you want cheese and sour cream. We arrived for lunch around one on Sunday and they were pretty slow. After ordering a blue margarita and a Dr. Pepper for my wife we started looking at the menu. What struck me as unique is that their menu has food from three or four restaurants there. So if you feel like steak, your wife wants fajitas, and someone else would like a burger, it will be no problem! The quality of food was outstanding! I ordered and received the ten ounce sirloin cooked a perfect medium rare with sweet potato and jalapeno cornbread! My wife got the chicken fajitas also cooked to perfection! This will be our go-to hideaway place only thirty minutes from home but not really near anything except being inside the casino! If only we had done as well with the slot machines. Walking into the casino it's easy to get distracted from all the games and machines going off and all the historic Route 66 themed designs and artifacts. My gambling buddy wanted to go gambling but we also were very hungry. We saw Johnny Rockets then thought na not in the mood for burgers. We saw the line for the buffet and said no way! In the middle was the Thunder Steakhouse Cantina. Neither one of us had ever been there and a steak sounded really good. As soon as we came up to the entrance you can see the beautiful hostesses there dressed up as cow girls. On the right was the hug bar with an old police vehicle above the bar. Immediately we were greeted and seated. I noticed on the way toward the table the place was pretty busy but not completely packed. Toward the back I noticed a small bar with people getting stuff. Out of curiosity when our server came I asked what it was. He said it's a salsa bar with all kinds of salsa, soups, and fresh tortillas. He also mentioned that it was complimentary as part of a meal or if we didn't want a meal and just wanted to eat from the bar there it only costed $2.99. My jaw dropped at how cheap that was. My buddy and I reviewed the menu and found they have quite a selection of different foods from tacos to fajitas to even steak and shrimp or steak and lobster. I was sold on the steak so was my buddy. I ordered the sirloin with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. He ordered the chunk steak with a salad. Immediately after our server took our orders we explored the salsa bar. They had 9 different kinds of salsas, macaroni salad, another dish (I can't remember), as well as green chili stew, and a potato soup with fresh tortillas besides the soups. I tried the potato soup, wow it really stole the show. My steak came in shortly after and it was nice and tender but didn't have much or that steakhouse spiced flavor I was expecting. The mashed potatoes really surprised me because they weren't your typical mashed potatoes. They had some green chili in it. Don't get me wrong I love my green chili but it's not something I would think to include in mashed potatoes. It wasn't too hot or spicy. I wished they'd added some butter because would've gave the potatoes more flavor that the green chili overpowered. The mac and cheese was also different. The stay at the hotel was wonderfull had a great time. For breakfast we decided to come over to the Thunder Road waiter stated it would be 20-25 min. we waited 45 min and asked our place in line she stated they was 3 tables ahead waited another additional 35 min after like 5 tables where sat. I asked she told me In a very rude tone "im working on it" I told her youve sat like 5 tables in the last 30min and was told "there VIP". The beer battered fish was recommended as a "lighter" meal, (description: Atlantic wild cod, Tabasco tartar sauce, Ranger India pale, ale batter, and coleslaw) but the oil seemed a bit old - tho not rancid - and that oily batter was the most flavorful part of the entree. Certainly a lot of fish on that plate, but no bueno. Thankfully, the salsa bar had some pinto beans and an assortment of soups that took the edge off of the hunger pangs. So, we dined at the Thunder Road Cantina inside the Route 66 Casino. Overall, it was a great experience. It's a clean little restaurant with pretty fair prices. Their Chips & Salsa, Carnitas Tacos and Fried Hatch Green Chilie Strip appetizers were excellent! Their Margaritas were also to flippin' die for! The staff was great as well with the exception of their female supervisor. A short, portly dark haired woman. What a cranky ole' gal she was! Not towards us directly, but to most everyone else. Especially her staff and even seniors? Really? Seniors?! She was so crusty, at my partners horror, I actually turned around after leaving to go tell her off. Good thing for her she was in the kitchen when I arrived. All in all, it was a good experience and we'd definitely return. The calabasitas was nothing more than sliced squash with no seasoning. The green chili mashies were ok but clearly not fresh and the poblano rellano wasn't a rellano at tall...just a pepper stuffed with rice and sliced Bell peppers and a big glob of some kind of white cheese, again with no seasoning. The salsa was completely lacking taste... again no seasoning. But the ribeye was perfectly cooked...but needed salt for sure. read more
