We all know that Cane Rosso makes good thin pizzas (named "Best Pizza in Dallas" by D Magazine 5 years in a row), so when they opened a parlor (adjacent to the one in the White Rock area) that specializes in Detroit style pies, a trip was in order. Already a big fan of the pizza makers in Austin named for the area code of Detroit, my expectations were high. I love both thin and thick pizza--plenty of room in this world for both (and all kinds in between). Everything about the rectangular pies we ordered from Thunderbird were spot on. The classic pepperoni had all ingredients in ideal proportions, and most importantly, the cheese at the edges of the thick chewy crust were browned to crispy perfection. It's also a great thing that the slices of pepperoni used are the old world type that curl up to form little cups. We had to try one of their signature pizzas called the Honey Bastard (hot soppressata, bacon marmalade, habanero honey) made in the Detroit style, and it was also a hit. Just needs more topping in general, Drip Pizza had maybe 1 oz of sausage on the entire pizza & lacking cheese...it's a pizza!!! Ngl.. major let down here. High hopes for some Detroit style pizza and got a big ole disappointment. Their Texas Pickle Dip absolutely sucked. Fries were fine, but like wtf is this liquidy ass ranch with pickle chunks in it? Literally waste of $10. Their Cheesy Pesto Sticks were mid and lacked in pesto. Don't get me wrong, the bread itself was very good, but like $10 for the whole thing so each stick is $2.50.. go fuck yourself (respectfully). Their Chicky Parm pizza (why can't they just call it chicken parm) was fine, but idk man it's just boring at the end of the day - maybe if they distributed their toppings on it better it would've been better, but idk it just wasn't that impressive. Lastly, their S&P 5000 pizza (why the fuck is that the name) was the only "solid" item I had. It was good, the crust on this (and the Chicky Parm) was good, cooked evenly, it was crispy, crunchy, and golden brown - they got the crust down. The toppings were pepperoni and sausage so idk how they could've fucked it up so I'm glad they didn't. Detroit style is a pan pizza variant, so if thin crust is your jam this may not be for you, but if the thick crispy deep fried crust is what you crave this is the spot. Our lives wouldn't be complete without Thunderbird Pies. We found out about them when they were making pizza as a ghost kitchen concept during Covid. The first time we had their pizza delivered and tasted it, we immediately knew we'd tasted the best pizza we'd ever had, period. (and, over the years, we've had our share of pizza, including Detroit-style at many other places.) No place compares to Thunderbird. For starters, even though it had been delivered because, at the time, there was no actual dining location we could visit, it was piping hot when we received it. We'd ordered the Drip Pan which can best be described as heaven in the form of a rectangle with delicious, crispy cheese edges. The cheesy goodness and the perfectly textured dough topped with soppressata, sausage, caramelized peppers and onions, tomato sauce, and roasted mushrooms combined to make a pizza that was/is so good that we ordered and had it delivered once a week during the Covid/quarantine period. When it was announced that the ghost pizza kitchen was closing because quarantine restrictions had been lifted, we felt like we had lost what had become one of the best and most looked-forward-to things in our lives. When we found out that they had opened an actual restaurant in Dallas, we made plans to immediately drive the 30+ minutes from where we lived to eat pizza there. We've also tried several of their other pizzas (Connie, Budd, Honey Bastard, Thunder Mifflin, Luka Brasi, Bacon Jamz) and they are just as wonderful and perfect as the Drip Pan. It just depends on what you're in the mood for when you go. The restaurant's service was wonderful, quick, attentive, efficient and friendly. They have a great, covered patio where you can eat. The dine-in area is a good size but still cozy and they're located in a great, easily accessible location near White Rock Lake, not far from The Dallas Arboretum and Fair Park/I-30. If you love Detroit-style pizza but haven't had a chance to go there, do it. You won't regret it. If you have been there already and know all about it, it's time to visit again. The group that owns Thunderbird Pies also owns Cane Rosso (pizza) and Zoli's (pizza, pasta, and more) which are also terrific. p.s. For those who are comparing it to other types of pizza they've had, please do an internet search for "Detroit-style pizza." It's cooked in a pan and a completely different style from other "regular" pizzas they might have had and is like comparing apples to oranges. Also, the outer edges are supposed to be crispy. If you are ordering off an app, the prices are not accurate. You will have random upcharge on your receipt. They will blame DoorDash but it's reflected on their own receipt. I called and spoke to a manager who informed me that the charge was the delivery fee and when I told him I had DashPass so there shouldn't have been a delivery charge, he admitted they purposely inflate the online order prices but since they don't want the higher prices reflected on their menu so they add the up charge instead. That way they don't have to show the increased prices. If I would have been made aware of this charge, I wouldn't have ordered but they made it so much worse by hiding it and lying about it that I will be reporting these practices to the BBB. read more

Normally this is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Dallas, but lately, it's been unnecessarily frustrating. Where most restaurants normally accommodate customers, Thunderbird has started to take advantage of patrons. We ordered a salad for our table--the Chopped Cheese--which is normally incredible. The ingredients used (the croutons in particular) were awful, damp, and stale. When we received our pizza, it was sloppy, undercooked and another guest noted that "this doesn't seem like the same quality pizza as we normally get." My friends and I have come here monthly since it opened. We always get two sides of ranch with our order small pizza with no issue. Today we ordered a large pizza and were charged $1/ranch. I can pay for condiments no problem, but that's outlandish. But whatever, I'll do it even though it's nowhere to be found on their menu. When I go to the register to order, I'm charged $3 for 3 ranches. Another patron requests it from an employee at the register next to me and he gets it for free. I asked "if he's getting it free, why am I paying $3?" I got "Oh, the first one is free." Still I was charged a full $3. The employees aren't clear on the new ranch racket, I guess. My question is, is it reasonable to offer 1 complimentary ranch for a pizza that's advertised to feed 4 people? Would 2 be reasonable? Whatever the case, Thunderbird needs a refresher on customer service, especially repeat customers that keep them in business when the restaurant is empty. read more

We were excited to try this new place. The crust is like focaccia bread with garlic and olive oil. The toppings are really good and I loved the fresh basil added to the top of the pizza. It is a very different from what most are accustomed to. I liked it very much. The restaurant reminded me of a 50's diner. Very cute. Now to why I did not give it 4 stars. We ordered a small pizza. We were waiting for what seemed like a lot of time. We watched a party of 5, we were 2 people, get their pizza, eat and leave. They were behind us when we placed our order. I asked a wait person that was cleaning the table next to us how long it usually takes to get a pizza. She said around 20 to 25 minutes. We checked out ticket and it said 12:22. It is now 1:05. We waited a couple more minutes. We are now the only people in the restaurant. My friend goes to the counter to ask if our pizza was close to being ready. He explained that others that ordered after us had been served and had left. He asked what the issue was. The young lady went to ask and came back and said, it a somewhat irritated tone that they were cutting our pizza now. She said if you are unhappy you can talk to the manager. My friend said that was not necessary, we were just hungry. A couple of minutes later she brought our pizza and dropped it on the table and stomped off. My friend said thank you to her but no response. At all times during this we were very polite and patient with this young lady. I know it is difficult to get help these days and wait staff are overworked. But such rudeness is uncalled for. Not once did anyone offer an explanation or apology. I've never had Detroit style pizza and I don't know if I can ever go back to thin crust! Eight of us got the fried artichokes (which were pretty good) and four pizzas. The Viva La Pesto was my absolute favorite, the pesto flavor was delicious and well-balanced. My friends said both the Connie and Thunder Mifflin were fantastic as well, with really good pepperoni. The Chicky Parm was my least favorite, the chicken texture was a little odd and the heaps of marinara weren't the easiest to eat. For all pizzas, the crust was fluffy with a crispy edge. Service was so friendly and attentive, they even brought us a knife from the kitchen to slice a cake we brought. Definitely coming back! read more

The red sauce was thick and sweet but we would have liked thicker Columns of sauce to get full coverage of the pizza. Several bites were sauce less, thus dry. Overall a delicious pizza! I guess Texans like this stuff as it averages four stars. But totally not our jam. Me, my wife and my daughter all found this really weird. The pizza dough has almost the consistency of a muffin. The cheese is nearly nonexistent. It's rectangular. Kinda charred on the edges. Reminded me of the stuff they used to serve at high school 35 years ago in the UK. That, trust me, is not a ringing endorsement for any food. Didn't help that DoorDash took 17 years to deliver it and it was stone cold. Thank god for the wine. read more

Oh my goodness this is so worth any drive to get to ! This is the best pizza I think I've had in Dallas . The cheese crust is crunchy on the sides and the tomato sauce is amazing . My absolute favorites are the Pepperoni and they have one called The Honey Bastard- it's sweet , spicy , savory magical! It's worth the drive . I live 2,hours away. I can't come up with enough adjectives. But this is truly one of my craves . I'm a pizza lover . The pizza was BURNT ALL OVER! I am from Detroit and was looking forward to some "Detroit style" pizza (thick, square). The totally burnt bottom and crust ruined it! Ordered "The Drip" for $27, delivery was fine, but was shocked when I opened the box to see the bottom and crust completely BLACK. The toppings are delicious but the crust is inedible! The golden butter crisp crust is what is supposed to make it a Detroit Style pizza. Turn your ovens down or get a hearth oven or use some better pans. I just read the other review with the photo of all the burnt pizzas. Why would you let this one out the door? Mistake. I ordered from Fort Worth ghost location at Zoli. Best pizza I have had since Rockyanos was popular in the 70's. Cut in a rectangle and a deep dish cheese crust, this pizza is absolutely delicious! It is a bit pricy, but it's worth every bite. They have a chicken sandwich and a Thunder Burger and other great menu selections. Beer and wine are available and get this!!! Inside Thunderbird Pies, they have the most exciting creamery and the ice cream is out of this world! Seating is inside and/or outside. It's a neat place to meet friends for a fun social evening. The toppings are premium quality and there is a small, but adequate selection of craft beer on tap and frozen custard for dessert. Drove well out of my neck of the woods to get Thunderbird after hearing great things about the pizza. Then sat outside in my car for an hour after the restaurant lost THE SAME order twice. The staff was disinterested and disjointed but to their credit after I made it clear how frustrated I was they did cover the pizza - but then chose to charge for the side salad which is a perfect parallel for the entire experience. Thunderbird pie was delicious - but I won't go back! After reading great reviews from everywhere, last night I ordered a pizza online for 7 pm pickup tonight. Knowing a Friday night would be busy, I arrived early. The sign in the window said to call for curbside, which I did (469) 754- Zoli - try that on voice dial!). It rang, and no one answered, so I left a voice mail that I was outside and my left my order number. It's two hours later, and no one has called yet! After 15 minutes I go in and asked hostess, who told me to go to the bar - liquor, not food. Here's where it gets crazy. . . The place was packed at the tables and those waiting for pickups. Nobody could tell who had been helped, who was with who, or if there was even a line. Social distancing was a challenge. So when it was my turn, someone at the bar asked my name and rang me up. Then, like everyone else, I stood back and waited. While I wait, I look at the line and ovens where they're making pizzas. A waitress came up and asked a pizza cook if the pizza he was making was for a table where she'd already delivered lasagna. Look at the picture - they're burning as many pizzas as they're making! 10 minutes, 20 minutes go by - no one tells you your status, when your pizza might be ready, or anything. I see another waitress returning a burnt pizza to the kitchen. I finally asked asked if anyone could tell me when I could expect my $30 pizza. No one could. I finally went to the end of a bar where pizzas are made and asked someone who looked like he might be a manager. He asked my name, he did a quick check and said mine was "just coming out of the oven right now!" I waited another minute or two, and he came out with my pizza. I asked why the delay for an order placed last night and he said they don't get online orders until 45 minutes before it's supposed to be picked up and on busy nights it may take 45-50 minutes to cook a pizza. I told him I called from outside and got voice mail and no one called me back. He said they only have two lines or people, or something. He apologized and wished me a good evening (I think he was being sarcastic). In the end, really poor planning and management. Now admittedly, I've never been a fan of Cane Russo or even Zoli's - while their pizzas are fine - just fine, it's way overpriced for pizza and not a good value with so many other great, reasonably priced pizza restaurants around. And tonight, when I got home (8 minute drive), my pizza looked delicious. But it was cold. Other than frozen pizzas, for the first time in my life, I had to microwave my pizza I just brought in! That said, it was a delicious pizza! But I'm not going back to anyplace that doesn't respect their customers. Too many other Restaurants are hurting bad and begging for, and appreciate my business.
