Went to Thundercloud subs last night to see what it was about. Tons of choices off the menu and they all sounded amazing. I finally decided on getting the club with peppers and avocado added on. The thunder sauce was the the big hype, I wished that I had more on the sandwich, couldn't really taste it. It was filling but didn't leave me feeling extremely full which was great. This is just amazing. The food is terrific, the service is great, the place is just so Austin. Because of the sub of the month (which is ludicrously cheap) I tried every one, and they are all amazing. Personal favorites are the Austin Club, the New York Italian, and the Club. Thundersauce for life. If they ask you to put oil and vinegar, don't even think about it, just answer enfatically "YES!" read more

Solid cheap sandwich... much better than Subway. Like many of the other reviewers, I thought the employees were friendly, and the Thundercloud dressing gave my turkey sandwich a nice kick. The bread was really fresh too, which is always a plus. And good music! read more

So Thundercloud Subs isn't the WORST place to get food that I've ever been to...and I think that's about the nicest thing I can say. Went in on a whim to try it out, without reading any reviews. The service in the beginning was alright...until I noticed that no one was wearing gloves. Another reviewer said one person handles the money, and the rest handle the food...not true in this case. The same person who made my sandwich bare handed had rung up the customer before me (who paid in cash). I'm not a serious germaphobe, but that worried me a little bit. I pushed aside my worry, paid and left a tip. Before I even sat down with my food, I heard the person who had made my sandwich LOUDLY complaining about the size of the tip I left to a friend of his. Really? who the hell does that? (apparently, at least one person who works in this particular store because another reviewer mentioned this as well). But of course, ignoring hygiene and rude staff, the most important part of any dining experience is, of course, the food. Which, in this case, was PAINFULLY bland. I got the hot roast beef, and my friend got the Turkey. We both shared a bite with the other, hoping one of us would actually like one of the sandwiches. No dice. Though hungry, neither of us really wanted to finish our small subs. We both left wishing we had chosen to go to Jack In The Box instead. And that's sad. read more

My favorite location! Been to 'em all: the shitty Riverside one, the cool Riverside one, the rad Burnet one with a DRIVE THRU where they'll give you free subs if you answer a tough and inane trivia question --- but this one keeps me coming back. Maybe 'cause I live off Manor.... I go here all the time for lunch. It's always quick and solid! Am I one of those people who only get to eat lunch from Noon-12:30? No I am just one of those sad/awesome people that rolls out of bed from Noon-12:30. Seriously, I should come earlier, I could, but I never do. This place always delivers. Whether it's the girl with the curly hair, the loud friendly old guy, the guy who looks like a rat crossed with Steve Albini --- they serve quick and get it done. They're nice too. They got a good system going of five people building sandwiches and one person fetching cups and swiping credit cards/issuing change. Average wait time is like a minute. Always go with the daily special --- it's never bad, but always discounted.That way you get to try all the subs they have to offer. Never get a large unless you're fat or sharing.The best: the office favorite (egg salad and bacon), spicey italian (comes with a spicy roast pepper glaze and hot capicola), austin club (GUAC). They're all good. I've been meaning to try their salads, but I never have. I have a general aversion to hot sandwiches too. It's just me. Never tried them. How are they always so high yet manage to make such great sandwiches?? If you've ever had friends who work at thundercloud you know it is a very "fun" workplace! But the important part to me as a customer is that they make the most delicious fast food you can buy. The subs don't even compare to quiznos or subway, thundercloud is so much tastier and has more unique sandwiches. And if you're veg you have way more options here than the sub filled with limp lettuce you get at most places. I'm reviewing the guadalupe location but they've all been good. I would actually say the Lake Austin is my favorite because I like the patio. read more

I can be a little flippant about sandwich places, because usually my belief is that if you can make it at home with stuff you have, it aint all that special. But I LOVE Thundercloud. The mere fact that they have the insight to add salt and pepper to each sub (a trick I also use; I learned it from my Na-Na) says a lot in terms of attention to detail and commitment to great flavor. Their bread is awful. Their bread is nightmare-inducing. Their bread tastes like wet paper towels. Yeast organisms should not give their lives for that awful, awful bread. It always seems stale. Although local and "cool" I am not a fan of Thundercloud Subs. Even though I have eaten here on hundreds of occasions it's usually because I was starving and Thundercloud was the nearest thing I could locate. First, the meat at this place never fails to give me bad heartburn, probably because it's cheap lunchmeat. This place ain't no deli. The bread is nothing special and makes up about 80% of the sandwich. The weird hippies, goths and punks that take your order and prepare your sub always have an attitude that screams " hurry up already". Although I listen to 101X sometimes, I really don't want it blaring during lunch with friends while trying to talk. Cleanliness? How can this place be so greasy when nothing is fried here? This location looks dirty, and some of the sandwich makers have nasty hands with nail fungus, wounds on theirs hands, and horrid chewed nails. My experience was awful and I couldn't eat the sub the dude made. I walked around the corned and threw it in the trash. I still cringe thinking about it. I normally go here a couple times a week, but after today I may think again. The last few times I've went my sandwich hasn't tasted that great, bread taste old and one of the workers told me they are having a hard time keeping people employed. Working at UT we have lots of student coupon books with a $1 off a sandwich lying around. Fast forward to today... As I'm watching my sandwich get finished up, the manager (mustache lady) tells me along with the line of customers this will be the last time honoring my photocopied coupon. Ugh..ok.. I literally just tore it out of a campus coupon book. Again, we are talking about $1 off. This place has seemed off since the blonde manager left. Time to find a new sandwich shop. read more

Thundercloud was probably the first sub sandwich I had that was local when i moved to austin in 1988. They make an excellent sub and pay attention to detail such as plenty of meat cheeses and lots of lettuce tomatoes pickles and onions. I have been going to this location weekly for over a year, but since they switched managers around a month ago, the quality has gone WAY down. The new manager hovers over employees and chastises them if they give you even a little extra toppings on your sandwich. As such, the sandwiches have gotten smaller and/or less filling. The environment/atmosphere in the shop has also changed. It no longer seems as friendly. I wish I lived closer to another location, because I'm done with this one. read more

you know what's rude? talking about people not tipping to your liking while you are at the counter and customers are standing around. I love the food here and have only been disappointed once (never ask for everything on a sandwich) But really, you guys stand behind a counter and move your hands around a little and stuff. I understand that you think you deserve tips for making kick ass sandwiches, and yes, sometimes if I feel you've gone above and beyond to make my day a little brighter I will kick in more than the change left over from my purchase, but listen: workers at thunderclouds, or any other non-server job, should greet any kind of tip with enthusiasm. I love thundercloud subs. I come often but today was my first time at this location. I was very disappointed with the way my husband and I were treated by the staff member that took our order. She made us feel like an inconvenience to her. She asked my husband what he wanted in his sandwich but didn't ask me what I wanted on mine, she just wrapped it up and put it on the counter. It was a very frustrating experience. I will not be returning to this location. read more

Stumbled upon this place driving around the university. First warning should have been being the only one there on a Saturday at lunch time. I wanted a hot sandwich so ordered the Nada Parm. Seeing them take cooked/frozen (?) chicken patties and put directly into a microwave didn't give me much hope. They did doctor it up to be not horrible, but by no means a great sandwich either. read more

I got the italian sub and it was amazing! The bread was so soft and delicious. The guy helping me was so nice! He let me put half sweet and half spicy peppers on the sandwich. There was just the right amount of meat on the sandwich too. They were also very efficient at getting the sandwiches made. If I lived in Austin I would go here all the time. Ok I have been a fan for years (even their trial time here in Houston was good for me)- but that said I was on a quick day trip with some of my daughters school mates and headed back home to H-Town when my auto routing took us by TCSubs- I explained that this was the best sandwiches ever-they called bs (not really more like "we don't believe you mr. dave"-so challenge extended....I whipped the beast around into the parking lot...challenge accepted). The crew (yes tats pierced etc) were super cool with the girls ordering and asking about our day (much appreciate that) so within minutes, we had some awesome sandwiches (I went Italian on white with the spicy peppers) and we were back on the road. For the next 20 min (until we got to Buccees) all I head was "oh my this is the best sandwich ever" ....victory....and they make whatever you want however you want it...great place!!!! read more

The sandwich was good as an alternative since they had run out of salad fixin's (yes, really). I watched the young man rub his eyes and then proceed to make my sandwich without washing his hands or using gloves. The few bites I ate of the sandwich was okay, but I couldn't get past the thought of that guy's eye funk in my food, so I threw most of it away. I like Thunder Cloud subs. I really like the Chicken Salad Sandwich and their California Club. The only thing is since i call my order in a lot (and i don't check it when i pick it up) my sandwich the majority of the times is messed up.. Example: I ordered Cali Club, no mayo, no mustard and no onions. Get to the office and the sub is drowning in Mustard! Yea this happens once in a while, but they are a super busy location and everyone there is real nice and have a good system going so I don't complain. read more

I've been coming to thundercloud for many years and I honestly believe it is so underrated. The sandwiches are so fresh and delish. I love the freshly chopped Jalepenos and pickles you can add. My personal fav is the California club which I hardly stray from. I only took off a star because of the ambience. I only take my sandwiches to-go which isn't always an option for lunch dates. The inside is super quiet and seats are sparse and uncomfortable. Still, the sandwiches are worth swinging by when you want something on the go! read more

Thunderclouds is exactly what it claims to be: a sandwich shop. I used to get there tuna sub and feel a little disappointed as the taste didn't match the price. But today I chose a wildly different route, my friend. I got a meatball marinara and even just watching it get prepared got me excited. The clerk made a funny comment about getting marinara on my beard, too, which added a personal component to this delight of a dining experience. I saved so much on the meatball (compared to the tuna, atleast) that I even got a small carrot cake. I know, right? It was all very tasty and satisfying and that is all I have to say about that. read more
