Ive used a few Vets in town. Dr. Thurman's office is probably the best all things considered. Dr. Thurmans office is extremely clean and looks more like a doctors office. I absolutely love this place! The receptionist is really nice, the doctor actually talked to us about our puppy's ear infection, and possible ways to help with her allergies. They don't push their products or run unnecessary tests. Will be making this our vet! read more

Hi Marissa, Jillian told me you check yelp often. We saw you guys this last Friday. We came in with our pig, penny. The doctor gave her some antibiotics for pneumonia. She initially was better Friday evening. She drank water and had some food. However, Saturday she kind of went back to where she was Friday morning, not eating and not drinking. Today, Sunday, she is breathing heavily from the mouth. From what I've read online that isn't a good sign. We feel helpless and are not sure what to do. I am afraid she won't make it to Tuesday when you guys reopen. Is there anything you can do to help her? read more

After being unable to get an appointment with my previous vet (whom I also love, but is retiring) in the time-frame I needed it, they recommended Thurman Vet since they are closer to where I currently live anyway. Let me say, I am SO glad I went to see them. The staff is caring and helpful, and Dr. Thurman is great. He is very straightforward and no BS, but still takes the time to answer your questions fully and discuss multiple treatment options (if necessary). read more

Very impressed with Dvm Thurman. I have been searching for a personable knowledgeable vet. I usually take my dogs to the vet off Harris Rd. They aren't very personable, always feel rushed, and get a different vet on every visit. Which can be very frustrating. I was told that my dog needed surgery to remove a 'suspicious' lump. so being a concerned mom I scheduled the $600 surgery. I decided to get a 2nd opinion. I'm sure glad I did. He's honest and straightforward. What turned out to be a possible tumor was an actual sebaceous cyst. no surgery or biopsies required. He explained the possible causes and preventive measures I should take. My search is over. read more

We have made Thurman Veterinary Center our choice for all veterinary services. We had been clients of our former vet for over 20 years, but afer 2 missed diagnoses (made by a new partner) we turned to this clinic on the recomendation of two friends. It was our first time to Thurman Veterinary Center and it was very clean, the staff was friendly, and we were called back at our appointment time, literally there was no wait time! The Dr. came in soon after and was kind to us and our dog. We recently got our dog at a local shelter. The Dr. was very thorough and cared about the health of our new dog. This place is wonderful . Took my Yorkie here after a previous vet gave me the run around. Dr.Thurman. Did a full exam of her and explained everything to me completely . Dr. Thurman is a great vet and so understanding and honest . Doesn't overcharge for services and disgnoses correctly !!! This is now my new vet ! I used to really like Dr. Thurman, and still don't have a complaint about him but the staff is horrible and the hours are not good. I went to pick up medication for my dog, and the receptionist had given my medication to someone else she gave me their medications when I asked her about it later I was told that it was the same medication, same dosage and everything and that it was fine to give it as instructed, after trying to give my 2.5 lb puppy this huge dose of medication I looked it up online and realized the dosage written on the bottle was not appropriate. When I called the next day the receptionist and the Vet tech were less than helpful and we were told to continue to use the medicine but a different dosage by the Vet tech, that dosage sounded incorrect so we called back and the vet tech was short with us and said the same dosage, which turned out to be incorrect. Finally when we brought the puppy in to get an answer from Dr. Thurman himself we found out the receptionist and vet tech had told him we mis read the label, when I showed him the medication was for someone else and that the receptionist had known this but told me to use it anyway he left. When he came back a few minutes later his demeanor was completely changed and he apologized (which was nice) repeatedly. He brought new medication which was much smaller and at this point I found out both the dosages told to use by the receptionists and vet tech were not correct. I think Dr. Thurman is a good vet but when you have a staff that makes mistakes and covers them up rather than telling the truth, they are putting people's animals at risk just so they don't get in trouble and this is unacceptable. read more

Came in with an appointment to get my 10 year old boxer checked out and the DR was so kind and gentle, he recommended a couple of things and we went from there, also i hadn't planned on getting him chipped today but when i asked about it the the receptionist asked if i wanted it done today i could, so heck yea. I would rate him a minus but that is not an option. He totally misdiagnosed my Chihuahua and gave me false hope. I took her to two other vets who both disagreed with Thurman and agreed upon a different diagnosis/prognosis. I had to euthanize her and it broke my heart. Shame on Thurman for ripping me off for $250. Luckily I used Care Credit and they dismissed the charges from my account after I shared about him. read more

Dr. Thurman is professional and caring, considerate and genuine. He has been caring for my "baby" Fergus for many years and now our new puppy as well. If I could give six stars here, I would without hesitation. I have recommended him to my friends, too, one who was told her dog would need several surgeries totaling several thousand dollars to work on a leg injury--not guaranteeing the results. She got a second opinion form Dr. Thurman who is very thorough and pragmatic and her dog is happy, healthy and all without expensive surgeries. read more

The customer service here is amazing. The prices are lower than I have paid in a long time and everyone there...including the Vet is very concerned and compassionate when taking care of my animals. Every time I go in, they know who I am and know my animals. I have even called 20 minutes before showing up for urgent situations and they do their best to squeeze me in right when I needed them. Love them, love them, love them! Dr. Thurman and his staff are the best in Bakersfield. I've had a horrible experience with another local veterinary hospital, but Dr. Thurman made it all right! Having had other pets, and seen numerous veterinary centers in different cities across California, I'm a tough critic when it comes to my animals. He genuinely cares for your pet's and your individual needs. Their prices are very reasonable and their care is top notch. Good location. They did well with my dog. They were sort of nice but my experience was fair but nothing to rave about. Pretty expensive.

I have gone to three different Veterinary Centers before and Thurman's is by far are the best. They don't try to get you to spend money on unnecessary things at all. He was so friendly and new exactly what he was talking about. This is now the ONLY place I will go. The staff was great and he was great. read more

I went there with a friend a while back. She paid for an exam and vaccs. She had questions for the Vet. The receptionist took the dog to the back to "weigh" the dog. When she came back, she said we were all done. I was shocked. I asked "what about the exam? What about the Vaccs?" We were told that the Vet had already given the vaccs and done the exam in the back. I asked if we could meet the Vet and was told he was in surgery. I asked how he could do the vaccs and exam and surgery at the same time. Never received an answer. Now I suspect the dog never got his vaccs and was not examined by a Vet, plus we never got to get any of her questions regarding feeding, etc answered. We were told she could make another appt (at an additional cost) if she had further questions. I said we were going over to my Vet, Dr Sheahan, and listened to the receptionist bad mouth Dr Sheahan over and over. I have never been in a more unprofessional office as this. Dr Sheahan's office never bad mouths another Vet and I have always had exceptional service at Rosedale Veterinary Hospital. Thurman's was a major let down for my friend and an eye opener as to how much better Dr Sheahan and her staff are than this place. DO NOT GO TO THURMAN'S IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR PET read more
