This little restaurant has quietly become one of my favorite spots for solo dates, and now you'll find me here almost every week. Ironically, it wasn't love at first bite. The first time I came was last year with friends for a birthday, and while it was perfectly fine, I left thinking, "That was nice." Nothing more. Then I moved to the area, fate (or maybe just convenience) nudged me back through the door, and I decided to try something different. That's when things took a turn. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, the kind of place that feels like it's giving you a warm hug the moment you walk in. The two girls who usually work there are absolute sweethearts. They're always kind, welcoming, and attentive even when they're experiencing a huge rush. I've become such a creature of habit that they already know my order before I even sit down. It's always the soy beef pho. Every bowl arrives like a tiny cauldron of comfort, bubbling hot with clouds of fragrant steam, accompanied by crisp bean sprouts and a bright wedge of lemon. The broth is rich, savory, and deeply soothing-I love that it doesn't taste like it's soaked in MSG compelling me to guzzle gallons of water afterwards. Every ingredient tastes fresh, every sip feels intentional, and every visit somehow manages to feel just as comforting as the last. Since transitioning to a more plant-based diet, I thought I wouldn't be able to easily find the same comforting experience that mimicked the memories I had of eating this dish with my dad growing up. I was a regular here before the new ownership. I've given this place multiple chances, but each visit has been more disappointing than the last. The portions are noticeably smaller than they used to be. On my most recent visit, I called ahead and was told my order would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived after 15 minutes as instructed, but I still ended up waiting nearly an hour for my food. To make matters worse, while I was waiting after already paying, a party that had been seated after I arrived received their meals before I got mine. That was incredibly frustrating and made it seem like orders weren't being managed properly. The food quality also isn't what it used to be, and the new management seems extremely slow. I was headed to Anaheim with some friends for a show at The Observatory when we needed some dinner before hand, luckily my friends already had a spot picked out and that spot was Thuyen Vien. It was my first time here and my first time having Vegan Thai food in years so I was pretty excited about giving this place a try. The menu here has all the things you would come to expect from a thai place including my personal favourite type of dish, rice dishes. I ended up ordering the Com Chien Thai Fried Rice which description read "A house favorite cooked with black peppers, Thai chili peppers, bell peppers, basil, soy shrimp, and soy pork" and let me tell you, it was served piping hot and tasted very good. Both the soy shrimp and pork tasted really good and the veggies were a nice mixture as well. Overall, Thuyen Vien was a pretty simple spot spot, having a small but super friendly staff and a pretty basic inside. I really enjoyed the food and the fact that had single cans of caffeine free diet coke which is near impossible to find anywhere these days, so kudos to that as well. My 3 visits were all at different times of the day, and i always found a couple tables occupied. With over a 1000 reviews and an excellent rating, you get the idea on how good this place is !! Thai tea: Good. But pathetic serving size. I asked for no ice because I had a sore throat and they handed me a cup that was 60% filled. It was laughable to me. I would have paid extra if it meant I got a full size drink. Mango salad: Yummy and fresh. Lemongrass chicken: Not very flavorful. I could hardly taste the lemongrass. The portion was very tiny for the price. Garlic chicken: small portion. Tasted like beef stewed in tomato sauce. Royal Noodle Soup: Their best item. Very flavorful. Second time I got it, the soup tasted like tap water. So I mixed all the seasoning at the bottom and it tasted normal again. It didn't taste like that the third time around. So I would definitely order it again, especially when I feel sick. It is a healing soup. Flan: yummy small treat. Overall, I would come back just for the soup. I'm open to trying the rest of the soups they have. But because I have tried so many items already and have been disappointed, I can't wholeheartedly give this place even three stars. They open 5 hours a day 3:30pm-8:30pm daily except Tuesday. Serving vegetarian Vietnamese cuisine. We got sweet and sour tamarind soup ($10.95) Fish clay pot ($10.95). You could also get egg plant or tofu. This comes out sizzling hot. Banana flower salad ($9.95) it's the same banana flower used in bun Bo hue. This salad is refreshing with the fish sauce. As I'm sitting here, waiting for my delicious food to arrive at my table, I was just thinking that I can't believe I haven't reviewed one of my favorite places to eat. Not only does this place serve up amazing vegan Vietnamese food, but it is just all around an amazing Vietnamese food. My go to is usually the vermicelli rice bowl (massive) and/or pho and when we order food to go we usually order food for a couple of days because, really, the price also can't be beat. Oh, another great staple is their fried rice. It's a small place with a few tables inside and it seems like a family affair with maybe one in the front one in the back cooking. What a time was had at this small mom and pop shop. My family and I wanted a good Vegan spot that wasn't super oily and processed so we settled here after learning they had pretty good looking spring rolls (it's one of the only things my toddler wants to eat right now) and boy are we glad we came. I ended up going with the vermacelli bowl which brought a smile to my face with every bite. The "fish" sauce wasn't too sour, salty or anything. Very balanced! That's hard to find. It had mint and other fresh veggies which brought out the freshness and even had slices of MANGO! That was a big surprise for me but they were more on the unripe side so the shreds had a bit of crunch as they left the skin on and not too much sweetness to throw off the flavor. I was not a fan of the eggroll it comes with as it's just too fried for my liking. Wonder if I can request a spring roll on the side instead? My wife got the royal noodle soup. The flavor was amazing, definitely had a little spice in there even though she asked for a 3/10 on the spicy scale so be mindful if you want mild you might just have to say 1 or 2! Portion sizes were all fantastic. Not too much, not too little. Even treated ourselves to the flan for dessert which made my wife's eyes roll to the back of her head it was so good. Love this hole in the wall restaurant in Anaheim. I'm Vietnamese and with Little Saigon nearby in OC, you really have to be at the top of your game if you want to impress me. Thuyen vien manages to do that. Despite many Vietnamese people being Vegetarian or even Vegan, there actually aren't that many restaurants that cater to the non-meat customer. And when they do exist, it's sometimes quite hard for a restaurant to replicate the complex and intricate Vietnamese flavors (many derived from fish sauce) without using any meat or meat products. So that being said, my girlfriend and I have been to Thuyen Vien a couple times and we love everything about it. It's small and intimate and usually not too crowded. The food is phenomenal. We've had almost everything on the menu and it's all fantastic. The flavors are authentic and delicious. I like the Bun Bo Hue (Spicy "Beef" Noodle soup...not pho...but his cooler more robust older brother) while my girlfriend likes the Bo Luc Lac (Shaky "Beef"). We've also had the bo bia ("Beef" meatball spring rolls) and the fried tofu and they're both favorites of mine as well. The owner/cashier of the restaurant is super nice.
