It's funny that I've been here many times, but have never eaten inside the restaurant nor have I ordered anything else other than the fried tofu appetizer. It simply is so stunning! The tofu is perfectly cooked because it is light and crispy. Combine that with the lime and the sauce and it spells a delicious snack. How is it that some of the best vegetarian restaurants in Orange County are located in unassuming-looking (or worse) strip malls? I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know not to judge a vegetarian restaurant anywhere by anything other than its delicious food--if it has delicious food--but don't worry; Thuyen Vien has bowls and plates and boats and dishes and ramekins of delicious vegetarian food. I came here with my parents on kind of a sad, rainy weekday. My apartment had burned down a few weeks before, and I had spent the day at the DMV renewing my license (with my parents' address because my address didn't exist anymore) and getting other important stuff done. Insurance, changes of address, discussing at length with my roommate the relative ease of getting public information like fire reports, death certificates, etc. You know, depressing stuff. So we drove all the way out, and at first, I was excited because Katella always reminds me of childhood for various and very important reasons. Well, we pulled into the wrong place, and it was a bear to get out, because someone had decided to back his RV out right after we passed, and he was blocking the only lane of traffic. I went through the parking lot only to find out that it was adjacent to but not connected to the Thuyen Vien parking lot. And when we finally got to the correct parking lot, our path was blocked by people double-parked in the middle of the driving lane. They were packing their car there rather than in the space they had just pulled out of. Why were all these campers about? We finally found the place, and when we entered, we were the only ones here. We sat, and I could tell by the reaction of the people working that the show was about to begin, and did it ever begin. The lady approached with a smile and a greeting and handed us our menus, while the man rushed to get us water plus a water pitcher for our table. (I drink a lot of water and often get the pitcher treatment after a while, but somehow, they knew I would be hydrating liberally.) My parents love going to vegetarian places with me but are always skittish about what to order, especially at East and Southeast Asian places that aren't Thai (they ALWAYS order pad see ew at Thai places). I suggested a couple of things, and they both enjoyed what they had. I really enjoyed the faux lamb. The service throughout our meal was very good. They checked on us, but they weren't hovering. By the time we left, it was raining again, but there were two or three other parties enjoying their dinners. The ambiance is the stereotypical Asian-vegetarian-restaurant-in-a-strip-mall-storefront ambiance. If you've been to one, you'll recognize this one. They have (little-kid) cute tile, and it does feel cozy on a cold night, despite the mainly white walls and even whiter ceiling and horrendous wannabe chandelier that's turned on way too bright. Like I already said, though, I don't hold a vegetarian place's would-be shabbiness of space against it, ever. I was a huge raving fan of Veggie Bistro (RIP) in Uptown Whittier, wasn't I? Wow!... I did not expect to have such amazing vegan Vietnamese food during my weekend at Disneyland. Hailing from the Bay Area, there are a lot of amazing vegan Viet restaurants that I've tried in the past few years. Very few have managed to wow or impress me like Thuyen Vien, and I have to say - you gotta come and try their food if you are curious about what vegan Viet food is all about. There were a couple of standout items that we don't see often at other vegan restaurants that we tried, and they were phenomenal: * Curried Seaweed ($9) - OMG, is this what vegan crab dip is supposed to taste like because it reminded me SO much of this dish when I used to eat seafood. The spicy, coconut curry goodness of the seaweed served with rice crackers was an absolute hit for us. * Banana Flower Chicken Salad ($8) - A refreshing, simple salad served with a sweet tamarind sauce that complimented our other dishes very well. * Fried Tofu ($7) - Okay... these were AMAZING. Fried tofu is not uncommon in vegan restaurants but these were fried, PUFFY tofu pieces with a tangy mint and lime sauce. Chef's kiss to this! We also ordered a fried rice and Bo Luc Lac to have with our meal. They were both solid mains, but it was really these appetizers that caught me off guard and really fired up my taste buds. Once you're open to trying food labeled 'vegan' (and I bet you eat a lot of vegan food already without realizing it), you come to find so many other kinds of foods that will reach inspire you to keep trying new things. Tried this place at a recommendation from a friend. It's pretty small and easy to miss in a tiny strip mall facing Euclid. The service was fine, polite older man. The place was simply but nicely decorated and very clean. I've never tried vegetarian Asian food before so I went with something I've tried at other places, the Vermicelli bowl. It comes with veggie egg roll, fried soy pork, noodles and salad. The fish oil they give you is good so I poured it on everything. It was surprisingly flavorful! The only negative is that there were only 5 small pieces of the "pork" and I feel at a carnivorous place you would get a better helping of actual pork. For that reason and because I haven't tried anything else, it's a 4 for me but I'll go back and try something else for sure. read more

If you love really flavorful noodle soup, try this place out! I've tried quite a few of their items, but the ones that I keep going back to are the Royal Noodle Soup, the Duck Noodle Soup, and the flan. The Royal Noodle Soup is in-your-face with the flavors compared to Hoa Sen down the road. It is pretty spicy as well, even though I always request mild. It's served with plenty of veggies to add to your soup. This noodle soup is sooooo good! My second favorite is the Duck Noodle Soup. I love that it comes with a few goji berries floating in the soup. This is a detail that I haven't seen at Hoa Sen. I also love that this dish comes with plenty of veggies to add. As a vegan, I miss custard dearly. Their flan is a little less fatty than I would prefer, but it does scratch an itch. Remember to remove the ice if it is served that way, because the caramel sauce gets diluted! There is no ice in the takeout version. Disneyland does an amazing fatty creme brûlée. If you are looking for bold flavors, come here. If you are looking for something a little more homestyle and calm in the flavor department, go to Hoa Sen. You won't regret choosing either. They have an efficient takeout system and a $20 credit card minimum. - Garlic chicken (Ga Toi): $7.45: A well-deserved best-seller! Light and citrusy flavor with medium spiciness. I was especially impressed by the smoky meatiness of the soy itself, which lingered deliciously since the texture was just slightly more chewy than meat. - Royal noodle soup (Bun Bo Hue): $8.45: deconstructed, you can see how generous they are with the amount of veggies and excellent variety of protein: mushrooms, soy beef, and tofu! Unfortunately the soup was too sweet with added flavorings for my taste; I'd hoped for more hints of lemongrass and Thai chili. One of the best in OC This is a little restaurant on the corner of Euclid/Ball with a sign "Pho Veggie" in front. The food is always served fast and fresh. - Banana Flower Tacos: a refreshing little appetizer served on a light, puff rice cracker - Fried Tofu: If you try anything, you HAVE to get this. It is so fluffy and airy and you don't get the same feeling you would typically get from eating fried tofu at other places (guilt from the oil). - Garlic Chicken: The sauce is so savory and there's up to 4 spice levels. the texture of the "chicken" is great, you would've never thought it was not chicken - Bun Thit Nuong (Vermicelli Bowl with Egg Roll): I was hesitant at first because I typically don't like vegetarian egg rolls but I was blown away. This may be the best egg roll I've ever had. I didn't know how I'd feel about having little mango garnishes in the bowl but it actually complimented everything. - Bo Luc Lac (Shaken Beef): I don't usually order this item because I feel that it is often too chewy and too saucy for my liking. However, this was such a great dish!! It came with crispy potatoes which reminded me of smashed potatoes. Overall, I really really really recommend this place. As a non-vegan who's been making more of an effort to limit meat intake lately, I was super intrigued by the rave reviews about Thuyen Vien's all-vegan Vietnamese menu, particularly their garlic chicken. My family is Buddhist so I've tried a lot of the vegan options offered at restaurants and temples around OC and am not too easily impressed. That being said, this place was among the best that I've had both in terms of quality and variety and truly deserving of all the hype. I've been here twice in two weeks and already cant wait to come back! Every single dish that I've tried has been so clean and fresh tasting!! While the famous soy garlic chicken was tasty with a texture pretty close to real chicken, my favorite thing here is the clay pot fish (Cá Kho Tô), which is slow-cooked to perfection in a super yummy sauce - just try it!! Other standouts were the banana flower "tacos" (tempura petals served with avocado, cucumber & tomato on rice paper crisps) and refreshing mango salad tossed in a uniquely tangy coconut tamarind. Jicama rolls were also really fresh and bursting with mint and basil flavors. Even their vegan flan was delicious, a tad too sweet but with a velvety light, custardy texture that really makes you question how they do it without eggs. This small, family-owned spot is a stellar COVID takeout option practically guaranteed to make you at least contemplate the idea of becoming vegan. This is one of Anaheim's gems. Every single item I've tried here has blown me away as a non-vegan person. I almost always get the vegetable curry with eggplant, and the spice level can be adjusted to liking. This time I ordered the Kung pow chicken, but my go to is usually garlic chicken. I also always have to get that fried tofu, it is almost like a vegan Chicharron!! I usually ask for extra lemons and squeeze the lemons into the lemon pepper powder. That's given with the tofu. Service is great as well. The owner is incredibly friendly as well. Unless it's extremely busy, I usually don't wait too long for my food. The interior is like a typical cozy hole-in-the-wall. Vietnamese cuisine, but make it vegan. For years, I would rarely deviate from my usual order: pho with rare steak and lean brisket or flank. Maybe I'd add egg rolls if I wanted to splurge. Our dinner included many traditional dishes, all without meat. On the kitchen counter: - Large Mango Salad AKA gỏi xoài: no shrimp was harmed in the making of this dish. Cabbage, apples, carrots, and mangoes, with a coconut tamarind dressing. I'm not too big on fruits in salad, but this was an exception. Tangy and refreshing. - Banana Flower Tacos: Interesting, not sure if it's worth ordering again. Basically a rice cracker tostada with lettuce, salsa, and tempura banana flower. - Vermicelli Bowl AKA bún chả giò "thịt" nướng: traditional dish is made with pork or chicken I believe. The soy pork texture is pretty spot on, and the noodles were cooked well. - (Medium Spicy) Energy Bowl AKA cơm hến: traditional dish usually includes clam or mussel. A wonderful medley of lettuce, rice, sliced carrots, tofu, and more. - (Medium Spicy) Garlic "Chicken" AKA gà tỏi: this was the crowd favorite! I can't believe it's vegan?! In my opinion, this was the closest substitute to the real thing. - (No Spicy) Clay Pot Sensations AKA kho tộ: the soy fish is not vegan, indicated by the "NV" next to the name on the menu. Regardless, this was also a well done imitation. Not quite the same flaky texture, but close. - (Medium Spicy) Thai Vegetable Curry AKA cari thái: just alright, kinda wish they had a "meat" curry with a protein substitute. Pumpkin, potatoes, peas, and carrots felt a little plain. I got the pho with mixed veggies ($10.50 plus tax), and my wife got the Buddha's Feast ($10.95 plus tax) and soy chicken ($3) and a bowl of brown rice ($2.50) on the side. The food came within about 10 minutes. The pho had a really deep flavour of anise and allspice, and wasn't the least bit oily. You get plenty of fried tofu, a nice assortment of veggies (broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, and carrot mostly), and a solid portion of thin rice noodles -- and the usual garnishes on the side (basil, bean sprouts, jalapeno and lime). Their homemade chili oil amps this up beautifully, lifting this from an excellent pho to a top-notch pho. 5/5 The Buddha's Feast was suitably gentle, but cooked with a very nice brown sauce. The soy chicken was a nice accompaniment to it, the consistency of which seemed more like veggie ham. However, at least twice every month, when it is full-moon during the first and fifteenth day of every lunar month, my family and I will eat vegetarian foods to accumulate good health and peace of mind, to what our culture has taught us. That is when we get introduced to Thuyen Vien, which located at the corner of Katella and Euclid. The restaurant has pretty limited parking spots and their hours of operation only available for a certain time. If you cannot find parking in front of the restaurant, go to the back or the sides, there are more over there. We usually have the Yang Chow Fried Rice, Duck Noodle Soup, and the famous Garlic Chicken. Everything tastes excellent. When biting into the foods, the texture is close to real meat. But the flavors are what surprised me the most because they do such an amazing job replicating every single flavor component that I get goosebumps when I know this is a 100% vegan establishment.
