I happened to be in the area and decided to stop by for some good old no nonsense Tex-Mex. Despite it being 8pm on a Saturday night and the parking lot being packed, we were seated immediately. Chips and warm, delicious salsa were placed on the table, followed quickly by an excellent margarita. Ordered the mixed fajitas, which were more onions and peppers than meat. They were okay, but could have used a bit more flavor. Service was great though and we were in an a out with a full belly in just about an hour. read more

FALSE ADVERTISING!!! NO Homemade tortillas! NO! If you are looking for homemade tortillas this place does not really offer. I've been here 3 times over the last year and every time I ask for an order of homemade tortillas they have ran out. I simply cannot believe an established restaurant will run out ironically on 3 separate random occasions, that I happen to frequent the venue. I simply have concluded they really do not offer this and just put it for attracting customers. I remember coming here in high school, that was over 20 years ago and the food is just as good!! I ordered the #9 combination plate which includes a crispy beef taco, a huge beef burrito and a cheese enchilada! My friend ordered the chicken enchiladas and they were very good! I actually might order the chicken enchiladas next time.You can't go wrong here, everything is good! Seasoned to perfection.The Mariachi band really makes a Friday night here a memorable experience. And lets not forget to mention; two people can eat for $20!!!! And have left overs!!! Just wow!! Service was great and felt safe when we arrived at 5, but they need to do a better job at managing the amount of people allowed inside. At one point the entry way was full of adults and children with no masks. It became clear the managers were oblivious of the developing COVID Petri dish so we paid our bill and left. Haven't reviewed this place but, after catching myself becoming a frequent visitor, I feel a review is due. No Matter how full the parking lot seems, I have never waited to be seated. One good thing about this restaurant is that this place has a lot of sq ft, even tho it looks small and outdated. The place is usually fully staffed as well. The only downfall is the busser usually greets you first and not only gives you chips and salsa but takes drink and food orders. My first few visits I had trouble figuring out who really my waiter was. Not too big of an issue. The queso, the guac, and the fajitas come in large portions. I always need a to go box. We're regulars here. Lol.I'm pretty sure they recognize us. We're pretty boring, i guess, we always get the cheese enchiladas for lunch and dinner. We love them! When you order take out, you get a huge bag of warm chips and their warm hot salsa. (Personally, I'm more of a green sauce kinda gal, but i truly appreciate the fact that they're not stingy.) NW Houston Mexican Restaurant is So-So The prices are alright and the presentation is poor. The floors and establishment is somewhat dirty. The chili con queso & chips are ok as well as the rest of the menu but the fajitas are weak compared to others. But for the quick Tex/Mex cheap experience and for the area, go for it. Tried the chicken enchiladas, queso, and salsa. Nothing was really that great. There also wasn't any social distancing between the tables.

The atmosphere is so welcoming soon as you walk in the door. Chips and salsa are to die for. We placed our order and got it in a very timely manner and omg the tamale was the absolute best I've ever had! We also had our first experience with a lady paying our bill. This restaurant is located on a scarier side of town. We came near closing and were happy they could sit us. I ordered a Margarita (see photos) and beef tacos no cheese. The strawberry and mango mixed margarita gave me brain freeze but was very tasty. It could have use more alcohol but hey every drink could use more alcohol imo. The beef tacos were served in a hard shelled bowl type thing which looked great for presentation but horrible for eating. One bite shattered the whole taco shell and I ended up having to eat my beef tacos with a fork... not bogie at all here. read more

I really like this place and have been coming to it for a few years to grab a quick work day lunch. It's super cheap for the lunch specials which cover a wide array of items, the staff are always around and happy to assist you too. Probably not quite on the level of some of the big name texmex spots around town, nor is the food quite at the same quality level, but it's certainly a good value. I've also started visiting it on the weekends recently, and it seems the service is pretty much exactly the same as at lunch. I came in alone and was seated in the furthest end of the restaurant at 6:30 on Monday night. I never understand why they take you to the furthest point in the restaurant when it is empty, but oh well. The staff was courteous, although not overly friendly or talkative. I ordered the Tia Maria's Special Combo which came in three plates. I was surprised by how much food it was for around $10 bucks. There was rice and beans, two enchiladas, a huge stuffed poblano, a queso puff, a hard shell bowl taco and guacamole. I enjoyed the flavor of all of it, except the poblano had a red sauce that was too sweet for my taste. I enjoyed the frozen margarita for $3.25. One was enough and I couldn't even finish all of it. (This is very rare for me). My two cents is that this place is fine, but does not beat any of the other local Mexican restaurants. I think I'll stick to my other favorites. If I could give them 0 stars I definitely would! I've been coming here on and off since I work around the area. On Tuesday I went in for a margarita with my friend and when we left we felt very drowsy. I thought it was only me but my friend felt the same way. I think they use really cheap liquor. So that's my first complain. Today, I went back to pick up some lunch since I was craving mexican food. I ordered the Friday special which comes with 1 cheese enchilada, 1 crispy taco & cheese puff. It was $6.28 for the lunch. The enchilada smelled like processed cheese and didn't look appetizing at all. The cheese puff was a round chip with cold nasty cheese on top. The crispy taco was just plain and nasty. Uhh I hate that I wasted my money and time here. Did I mention that my plate was covered in lettuce and tomatoes?? I mean I guess it's for the decoration but really people???? I was pretty hungry but just threw away the food and went to jack in the box for a cheeseburger. Now that was a pretty good lunch! It was fresh and hot! I also don't like how the staff talks about their guests in Spanish. People like me that speak Spanish don't look very Hispanic and so they think they can talk about you because you simply won't understand. Looks are deceiving my man. I understood everything that was being said. Overall, this place sucks. I wouldn't recommend them anyone. Not even my worst enemy. First night in Houston and they made me feel like a part of the community. Great staff and meal choices.

The menu has a tortilla soup and a chicken soup. We ordered a tortilla soup and we received the chicken soup and on the side avocado, cheese, rice and tortilla chips. It was the saddest tortilla soup ever!! I don't know where these people learned how to make a tortilla soup or are just plain lazy to actually make a tortilla soup. To the owner of Tia Maria's, if you read these reviews and you need to... Your service is not great and deserves less than the star I gave you. Your food is nothing great either. The seventies are long gone and the décor could use some sprucing up. The food is cold and the meat is dry. The portions were as clueless as your wait staff and the rest of your staff. The guacamole is sour and tastes old. It's the easiest thing on the planet to make and nothing to the recipe. There are many Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston and your can be replaced. It has become glaringly obvious this place care more about quantity than quality. My son and I have tried this place before and it was okay. However, last night sealed it's fate with us. The hostess barely greeted us. All we got was a grumbly "how many" and we proceeded past clean, spacious open booths to the last possible inky dinky booth in the place back by the emergency exit. The drink waiter was good and funny. Then our dinner waiter came to us to take our order. He was disorganize, not ready and pre-occupied. When our food came and it was cold, the plates were not warm and the food had seen not since it left the pan it was cooked in. When you order fajita based meal you expect to have at least the meat to be hot to warm. The meat tender and juicy. Not cold and dry jerky like meat we had last night, with guacamole that tasted old and sour. When I tried to find the floor manager I waved him over to our table. I was ignored. He was much to busy socializing to take care of the actual issues. I finally was able to let the drink waiter know what the issue was. He got our waiter to come to the table to and what do you know, he didn't offer to get the manager or anything to remedy the issue. Just "Oh, Ok" and walked off. After that we received the check that was added incorrectly, imagine that! We spoke with the cashier and she didn't offer to get the manager either or any solution either. Just Ok. If I am paying for a meal in somebody's restaurant that has history and has been in the Northwest area of town for decades you expect much better than what we got. In fact, before we left I watched as the table near us threw money down and walk out upset with the service. The lady tried to speak to our same waiter and he was very unconcern. Fix your service, food-( Have your REALLY EVER tasted it?) and the atmosphere or the umpteen years you have been in the Northwest area can quickly turn to "in the past" aka zero. read more

We came here on Friday night after the Astros parade with a family of 10! It was 7:30pm and about a 40 minute wait, not bad for the number of people we had. Secondly, the wait was closer to 15 minutes! Our server, Enrique was AMAZING! Super friendly, attentive and his support staff were as well. We ordered margaritas that were delicious. My family order fajitas for 6 and it was literally fajitas for 12. **If it's just two people, order fajitas for 1!!!! Seriously, the portions were absolutely ridiculous. They were also served on a bed of peppers and onion, yum! The chips are thin and cripsy and the salsa comes out hot, my favorite! There is also this deliciously spicy green creamy sauce that comes on the side. It's not like a creamy avocado because it's tastes habanero-y. So. good. As a vegetarian, the selection wasn't extremely diverse, but I got the spinach enchiladas and they are my favorite enchiladas of any Mexican restaurant I've ever been too! There was a Mariachi band that really put the cherry on top of the authentic experience. They took requests and were SO talented and friendly! Lastly, there is a free serve yourself, soft serve ice cream machine on your way out!! Who doesn't want a small soft serve ice cream after dinner?! Overall, a wonderful experience.
