Stopped in to the timber on our way back to Livingston. A local friend had suggested we eat there on our way home and we did. We needed a beer and a burger and The Timber did not disappoint. We sat at the bar and were immediately asked what we wanted to drink and we were handed menus. We ordered a couple of local pillsners. I had the beef burger with horseradish cheddar cheese. It's Montana beef for sure. No fat freshly cooked and it was amazing. The fries are not to be missed - Beer battered and hot out of the fryer. My husband had the chicken strips and fries and he said they were the best chicken strip seat ever had. We sat with the locals and had great conversation. But, sadly, a lot of yahoos drop off of the interstate into small Montana town bars and bring in their great expectations -- only to wring their towel out in a review dump afterwards. Our family of five came in for lunch on the drive to Seattle and we were immediately greeted by a friendly and enthusiastic server. Yes, they were busy. And she had the whole dining crowd plus the bar elbows. But we got our drinks, got our menus and she took our order as soon as she could with a smile and a thank you. The food was hot off the grill and tasty and considering there was only one cook and one server we have zero complaints about both the service and our eats. I showed up 20 minutes before they closed. I'm starving, but I know a lot of places shut down the grill that close to closing. So I asked if they were still serving anything, and the manager says "YES!! Anything on the menu!!" I had the mushroom Swiss burger which is probably the best burger I've had a very very very long time. The meat is amazing and local. they recommended a beer which is also local and amazing. I had beer battered fries with my burger and I wish I could take home that crunchy goodness. The burger was cooked medium which is perfect (and it actually came out medium, not some dry hunk of meat). I am going to bring my niece back here tomorrow night for the lamb burger (also local meat). I HIGHLY recommend!! Price: $11 for the 1/2 lb burger. (To put that in perspective, I paid $16 for a 5 oz burger in Jackson, Wy, and the flavor of this one here beat that all the heck). $4 for the beer battered fries. The burger comes with chips, but I watched some dude eat those fries, and just had to have them. YUMMMMM! Service....impeccable, friendly, made me feel at home. We got there at about 7:15 on a Monday night, after driving 10 hours on a road trip. The place was hopping, no tables were available and the bar was full. We waited for a few minutes, a group was done and left their table so we just sat down there since there was no hostess to check in with. A woman came over a few minutes later to clear and wipe the table and seemed annoyed that we were already sitting there. Another gal came quickly and took our drink and food order. Drinks came fast. Food came about 30 minutes later. There was only one cook making orders for the whole place, so we don't fault him, we could see he was working hard. One of the things we ordered was the chicken strip basket (delicious) which included a choice of any side. When we got the check, we saw they charged an extra $1.50 for the onion rings. We decided to not even bring it up since we were tired from driving all day and just wanted to get out of there and back to our motel room. This place touts itself as being super friendly but we didn't feel the love. I'm pretty sure it's mostly given to the locals. We stop in Big Timber every year on our way from MN to ID and back and finally this year tried the Timber Bar. We won't be back. read more

I absolutely love the Timber Bar, from the incredible sign above the entrance to the quaint, comfortable interior. I only found the place after taking a wrong turn on our way to Bozeman, but so glad we did. The large neon sign immediately grabs you. We parked in the street and entered through the front door. The bar and grill are immediately left, and a mix of high top and lower tables is in front of you. Beyond the tables are a pool table and a gaming room. The bar itself sits large with a tiled bar top and medium wooden rail. A box footrest sits in front of maybe 6-8 square bar stools with a padded seat and rounded back support. The back bar contains a couple smaller TVs, bottle shelves, and mirrors keeping with the frontier, wood, and beer theme. The rest of the decor is primarily beer signs and tap handles. We went during COVID, so the bar was mostly empty, but the service was fast and friendly. The burger was tasty, and their beer selection was more than sufficient, but not too much. If driving between Billings and Bozeman, you need to quickly detour and check out Timber Bar. We had to get on our way, but I regret not seeing the neon sign at night. read more

Our start to our fun week started very well. We looked at places and this one was the best restaurant in the area and we were not disappointed. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant with the wood and the memorabilia on the walls. We were there for a roping in the morning. Wanted to get out of the sun and eat on a Sunday. It was packed but had room for us. A party of ten to sit. We wanted to order hamburgers and cold drinks. They wouldn't take our food order after sitting there for 30-45 minutes. We had two rounds of drinks and asked to order a couple of times. Took a day trip to Big Timber from the park and stopped for a bite on the recommendation of an acquaintance. Had a wonderful time visiting with the bartender and had a great meal. I used to be a huge fan of the Timber Bar. Not anymore! We ate dinner there last night and had a chicken dinner and a app sampler. We ordered soup and salad. We were brought out soup before the meal was served, then when the meal was served it had another cup of soup and no salad, that came after we finished dinner. The chicken was over done and dry. Soup was mediocre. The app sampler was awful. The grease that things were fried in made all of it taste the same. We had a few drinks and it was $56. Today for lunch we thought, they were busy last night, that is why it was bad, so we went in again. Ordered a mushroom Swiss burger to split and a side of jojo's. 2 beers. The were 3 half slices of mushroom. The jojo's, in all the places I have been are logs of potatoes and that is what they used to be here, were slices of burned potato that were some what raw flavored and tough as nails. The burger itself didn't even taste good. How can you screw up a burger! The servers had about as much personality as the missing mushrooms. And all this for $26!,!,! We had to ask for everything including the ticket then to take our money. This used to be such a treat for us but I will never give them another try! read more

Wow. I know it's a difficult time for small businesses, but the service was horrible. We were greeted and drink/app orders were taken promptly, but then no one ever came back, except for when a waitress who was too busy chatting with friends and just asked if we were done with our menus but didn't ask if we'd ordered, took them and didn't say a word. We sat there for about another 10-15 minutes and noticed that now our initial server was cooking. We could see that the place was busy so that was understandable. But then no one else came to help us. When I approached the bar and asked for assistance ordering food, she acted as if it were our fault because we didn't have menus at our table. She came over to take our order, but seemed annoyed, so I made sure to be extra friendly and easy going. Things were fine until we got our food. We had 3 beef sliders and one cheeseburger and only 1 of 4 buns weren't totally burnt. Then no one ever came back to check in us so we had no way of giving them a chance to fix it. By the time she came back, we needed to leave and told her about the burned bread. She literally stared at us and said nothing. Took our debit card and walked away. When she came back she said, "Have a safe trip home, " in a voice that meant go back where you came from. We politely told her we were from Helena, MT, and she walked away as if we were trash. Also, not one employee was wearing a mask, no one was cleaning tables or menus in between guests, and the entire place smelled like burning grease and there were flies EVERYWHERE. It helps that my Grandmother used to drink in this bar. I can remember coming in here when I was in grade school. I have always loved this place no matter who owned it. It's just resonates Big Timber. I like what Frank has done with the place. It's nice to be able to sample a different beer each time I visit. I can't stand bars that only serve the rot gut Coors and Bud Light. Don't get me wrong, I went through my Bud Light stage...when I was a kid! Don't judge a book by its cover. After reluctantly "settling" for this place a few years ago, and after several re-visits, must say these folks are killing it. When I first walked in on the first visit, expecting disappointment, I was shocked to see a huge beer list (well over 100 selections, no kidding, many available to go) full of exotics and imports, sours, craft ciders, locals, regionals, and stuff I'd never even heard of. Several Japanese whisky offerings: holy shit, am I still in Montana? And then, a champagne/sparkling wine list with six or seven quality choices? I must be dreaming. I was stunned, and intrigued. I was not disappointed by the menu, which has all of the usual Montana suspects, but most are made in-house, and with local ingredients. The local lamb burger is fantastic, and ridiculously cheap for the huge portion. This is not a lamb slider, it is a ten-seater lamb toboggan. For only NINE f***ing dollars, and it is so big that it makes me fear a food coma every time, and I am a big guy with a big appetite. Likewise the porkchop sandwich. To blaspheme a bit, the porkchop sandwich is better than Porkchop Johns and Muzz and Stans. Everything is ridiculously cheap in my opinion. House-made curry-pickled eggs with pretzels, pickled peppers, and hot mustard for a only a dollar each, custom local Andouille sausages, etc. This is honestly my new go-to destination dining spot in Montana, and luckily it is right off the interstate. Even if I have no other reason to go to or stop in Big Timber, and I usually don't, except to fuel up, I think I will start incorporating the Timber Bar into my travel plans, and it is worth a trip just to eat and drink there. We are already planning a fishing/boating/eating/beer and cider tasting/collapsing in a hotel room trip there soon. Uber probably won't be there anytime soon, but Big Timber is small enough that stumbling is a reasonable option, and would be a good way to burn off some of the gluttony. The service was also great and enthusiastic. One of the owners actually has the bar logo and name tatted on his arm; figuratively that spells "commitment". Everyone was knowledgeable, friendly, and casual, even the regulars at the bar. Our kids were also graciously accommodated, looked after and provided for, including the rare unicorn of a seating option for toddlers that works with high "bar" style tables and stools. read more

Clean, family style bar with THE BEST fried chicken I have ever had in the country!!! Just spending one night here at a campground but asked owner what time they open on the morning as you can get buckets of Chicken to go. Super fresh, hot, crispy, seasoned well and Not greasy . You could split just the 4 piece dinner as it came with soup or salad ( got the homemade lettuce soup( yes lettuce!) yummy!!!!!!! Hot crisp JO-JOs are a must! Hubby had sliders and he would not share with me because he said the were yummy too! Service spot on, owners super friendly and awesome to chat with....
