It's not as upscale as Panda Express and probably not as sanitary food preparation wise (not that I witnessed anything). The lady working the front was nice. Food wise...it's all-right and it gets the job done. I think the main attraction here is the wings with fried rice. It's not bad. I've had the cheeseburger twice, to me it's allright. I think it's kinda cool they offer Kool-Aid as a drink. I never got to drink that when I was younger. Overall....you can't go wrong here I suppose. It's probably not healthy, and the wings were huge which kind of frightened me (and trust me it takes a lot to scare me!). You don't have to tip, so that's a plus. read more

It's like many of my favorite things in life all combined into one, and within very close proximity to my house. The Shoney's that used to be here SUCKED. And they replaced it with a Timmy Chan's but it was until a recent talk thread that made me remember to check it out. I walked in and they basically kept the tables the same, very old looking and feeling and redid the ordering counter. We decided to eat there, but almost everyone else had ordered to go, which came in their very infamous white styrofoam boxes. But then they would just open up the box and eat it there. Very strange. Anyways, my friend and I decided to split two entrees. The first being chicken and waffles. This thing compares with Breakfast Klub. Except more chicken, about the same flavor, but no wait and cheaper price. We also got an order of chicken fried rice. It was very flavorful, greasy in a good way. After the meal we were stuffed. Sadly though, I think all these raving reviews and tantalizing pictures set me up for high expectations. We had no intention of dining in, but idk if anyone would want to. The restaurant space is old and bare, and it smelled like dirty mop water and bleach. Oh well, the take-out portions are bigger anyway! We ordered combination fried rice w/ 6pc chicken wings to-go and although the portion size was indeed HUGE (and only for about $10 too!), the food wasn't anything special. Wings were crispy enough; a little tough and dry at some parts... but what really annoyed me is that there's no option to get your wings spicy. Shouldn't that be a given these days?? On top of that, the rice was dry and generic. Two meals later and we still have half a box of it left... which would be awesome if it was actually tasty. However, there are two things that stand out for me: 1. Kool-Aid slushie. Your inner child will thank you. 2. The lone, small Asian cashier manning the counter. Timmy Chan is a hidden treasure! I've seen it numerous times while driving, but I never went in because it looked sketchy from the outside. I'm so glad I decided to give it a try on my search for a breakfast place. On this particular visit, I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. The quality was pretty amazing for the price. The portions and flavor were pretty similar to The Breakfast Klub, but at half the price. The chicken was so flavorful and perfectly crisp. The waffles were so soft on the inside, but crispy on the outside. Timmy Chan is so good and affordable. I will be sure to make more visits in the future to try the lunch and dinner options. My husband had the general's chicken and literally ate one piece and not a single one more. I tried it and it basically fried chicken pieces tossed in a weird sauce...maybe a wing sauce with none of the chinese ingredients. Stopped here when staying at the nearby Crowne Plaza for an event at NEG Stadium. You can tell from the outside that this isn't what I would necessarily call "food". The inside is outdated and cleanliness is questionable. The staff was kind and helpful. The food was over done or underdone depending on the item. We each had the breakfast special with ham, eggs, bacon, sausage and hash browns. They were out of grits and oatmeal so I had extra hash browns. I was glad that I did, because the food was good, and really affordable. We decided to dine in to get the full experience and, as another yelper stated, the atmosphere was very bland, semi-clean, but bland. But since I was there for the food, I didn't really care. The person who took our order was very polite and helpful. We tried the fried wings, house fried rice with ribs, and general tso with regular fried rice. I think the combo came with 4 wings and a good amount of rice. The wings were crispy, hot, and very flavorful. The rice... the fried rice... it was really really good. Given, it was probably loaded with a ton of salt, msg... etc... whatever else horrible you can think of, but the flavor of it was spot on. I can't believe i've passed this place up for so long. My plate of food was very affordable and enough for me to eat lunch and dinner (which is a lot). I was not expecting such a large portion for the price I paid. The fried chicken will leave you wanting more without a doubt. I had very low expectations but when I opened the shrimp fried rice - I was pleasantly surprised. My uncle is one of the most amazing individuals I know. He is a man's man, a real blue collar, calloused hand type of guy. He has always been someone I can count on. So when he informed that he knew a great place for chicken and waffles I cringed because I thought we were going to be in line forever at the Breakfast Klub. But hey, standing in line for the man who taught me how to ride a bike is nothing! I pick him up and we arrive at... yes, Timmy Chan. I looked at him with one eyebrow in the air and he said, "Trust me, nephew." You have to understand, the last time I was inside a Timmy Chan establishment I think I was in school and in my hand was exactly $2.38, the exact price for a wing dinner w/ gravy. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever walked into Timmy Chan's with anything more than a $5 bill. (I don't think I would.) This place is what I once called, "economically necessary." In other words, if you're down to last your five and you need to eat... this is the place to do it. Ignore the guy in the corner selling the felt painting of Tupac, Biggie, and Jesus. Ignore the lady outside begging for a dollar. Ignore the guy in the parking lot trying to sell you his CD for a "small donation" and ignore the fact that your wing dinner may be prepared in violation of several health codes. Of course, that was over 15 years ago. Timmy Chan still isn't the bastion of hope for American breakfast but the wings and waffles were pretty damn good. The wings are always seasoned well and not over fried. The Belgian waffle was fluffy and crispy (the ways I like them.) The place was clean but not fancy. If they took the time to serve warm syrup or better coffee I could probably see rating them 4.5 stars. However, then it wouldn't be Timmy Chan. This place is cheap, quick, and delicious. Man, I would never have gone to this place but curiosity got the best of me. How could I continue to ignore a place that my friend insisted to have wings on par with Breakfast Klub?!? I live really close but always passed this place up as it looked a bit sketch, but it was time to revisit my once beloved childhood buffet (this place used to be Shoney's back in the day). The place didn't look too different they just removed the buffet lines and added a large ordering counter. The order process is very easy, walk up to counter to give order, take ticket, wait for number to be called pick up order. You have the option of dining in or take out, we were advised to take out (supposedly larger portions) and less sketch, but it didn't look too bad to dine-in. At least from what I could tell the place looked pretty clean? Anyways, we ordered the 6 wing and fried rice combo, yes, one entree for two people. At first I had my doubts as bf and I usually order our own entrees but we were warned of the large portion sizes and holy smokes, these were Texas sized portions. We got home to two to-go boxes, the first was for just the wings, and the other was filled to the brim with fried rice, OMG I love rice! The wings were still hot when we got home, nice batter and fried well and quite tender inside but I think Breakfast Klub still prevails. The flavor of the wings were a bit lacking but nothing some cock sauce or sweet chili sauce can't fix! I thought the rice wasn't going to get finished but I should never underestimate myself...the bf helped to eat a cup or two and I devoured the rest. Man, I felt so gross after eating all this food, fried chicken, and then super greasy fried rice, ack but I just can't say no to carbs! Oh, and for the Kool Aid lovers they make a Kool Aid slush, I tried a sip and it was refreshing but I don't think I could down a whole cup by myself, trying to keep diabetes abay. Timmy Chan has figured it out. One bite of the Kung Pao and I wondered - "was this food?" Another bite and after a millisecond of mild flavor, it was gone. I tried my wife's meal - same issue. Truly no flavor. Not BAD flavor, NO FLAVOR. Timmy Chan's bland offerings haunt my sleep. I have waking nightmares of flavorless carrots and plastic celery. I tried to upload a photograph of empty space to Yelp, to signify what Timmy Chan's food tastes like, but Yelp rejected it. I know what you're thinking - had I scorched my tastebuds on hot lava before the meal? Did I sandpaper my tongue before I walked in? No. I was primed for food. Salivating. I was ripe for receiving the garlic, ginger, herbaceous, salty, sweet notes of a great Chinese meal. DENIED. I was denied, and so should Timmy Chan. He should be denied a business license. read more

The westbound feeder of 610 South has seen quite of bit of development recently, with Chacho's, Danny's Kitchen, and Timmy Chan's all setting up shop, but still as a rule, the closer to Reliant Park you are, the more run-down the neighborhood is. The Original Timmy Chan's serves great fried rice and fantastic wings, but it is housed in a run-down diner in a bad part of town, so that I'm really hesitant to recommend this to anyone without the proper precautions. If you do decide to venture out here, I would recommend getting the order to go, and not staying any longer than you need to. Nevertheless, the food is great here, and one meal of fried rice and chicken wings can be stretched out to three meals, if you wanted. The fried rice is meaty, greasy, and delicious, and this is also one of the few places that gives you the wing and the drum together. I do get a certain magical feeling when I open my box and see that 7th wing hiding in my order of 6 wings. Pro-tip: to get the most out of your wings, pick up a bottle of Magma Hot Sauce and add a few drops to your ketchup. The spiciness really brings out the flavor in the breading. read more

When staying at the hotel next door we came to Timmy Chan's for breakfast and it was delicious and affordable. I had the Pork Chops and Eggs. It came with a bowl of grits. Boyfriend had the big breakfast and gave me his pancakes. Those were pretty tasty. Pretty sure the Chicken wings and waffle is the most popular item on the menu. We also came back later for dinner and I had the seafood Combo which came with two fried tilapia filets and 6 jumbo fried shrimps, a couple of hushpuppies and either French fries or fried rice. The Chicken and waffles weren't even close to the perfectness that breakfast klub serves up. The chicken was dry and the waffle was just a normal continental breakfast hotel waffle. I was trying to be healthy and ordered the oatmeal, but it came out SUPER liquidy. I had to spoon out the oatmeal from the white liquid and the work didn't even pay off, since the oatmeal didn't taste all that great. Serves me right for trying to be healthy..never doing that again. I knew I had to mosey on over when my sis came to visit from out of town. This fit the bill for a Sunday morning family breakfast & I didn't even need to cook or go far. The chicken & waffles are AMAZEBALLS!!. Fluffy, sweet homemade Belgian waffles, perfectly seasoned fried yard bird & portions fit for 2 or 3. My other family members had the standard breakfast fare by the Grits are the epitome of all things southern. We all left full & happy. The $$ for all 4 of was under 40 bucks & we all had leftovers.
