TN Thai Bistro, wheres the Thai food I had Japanese? I walked in and it looked like a small cafe shop, but if you walk in further than you'll see a seating area with a wide open concept. The place was very simple and right to the point the first seating area looked like a coffee shop where you would just grab a drink and sit and chat it up. The 2nd part of the place looked more like a place you would sit down and dine which was a nice concept. The reason we were here was to get sushi, but I was already a little worried about the sushi b/c the name of the place is TN Thai Bistro. Japanese food at a Thai named restaurant I dunno. But mind you all the places I've been to in Michigan haven't disappointed me yet. The many waitresses that were serving us were very friendly and even gave us suggestions on what to get especially since it was my first time there, my cousins on the other hand have been there many times. Overall the sushi was very good, the rice was well done, the seaweed they used was very fresh and crisp and the fish that they used tasted fresh as well. My only complaint is that they used a little too much rice on the maki rolls but it wasn't overwhelming like other places. This is the best Thai food I have had in Michigan and the quality has remained consistent throughout the years. While they do have some dishes that are not authentic like the sesame chicken, you can get authentic dishes and in my opinion they all taste good. Some of my favorites are the cheesy noodle, prik king and voon sen aside from the common dishes like pad thai, kow pad, etc. After moving to Ann Arbor, I have not found another restaurant that compares to this one. As a Grosse Pointe native, I feel like this place is a gem amongst all the classic American restaurants. It's the only sushi outlet I know of in the area and is one of the few restaurants with outdoor seating. I am a bit biased since I worked here during highschool but that was back in 2006 when it opened. This place is definitely a bistro: small and welcoming. We had a group of 13 on a Saturday evening, and they were able to accommodate our reservation. The menu is vast, but somehow they manage to pull off every dish. Not one thing wrong with any dish served to our group. We found the prices to be spot on. My sidekick Pepper (who always makes me decide dinner) is decisive all of a sudden and says she wants sushi and we have limited time left to get it so I whip out the Yelp! app on my phone and see a place called TN Thai Bistro close by with decent reviews. The restaurant is long and narrow with one side of the restaurant all window, which is nice because Kercheval is nice to look at. The servers here have a demeanor that is so pleasant that I feel like I just had a massage after dealing with them. Seared Ahi Tuna looked not so seared (I'm used to a blackened crust) but the the taste was top. The sushi (Yellow Tail, TN Roll) where very good. I have never even had a mediocre experience here! That's a feat in itself!! My BF and I have had both the Thai and the Sushi. Again ALWAYS GOOD!! The Pad Thai with tofu and coconut curry sauce is like the song Dream Weaver should play while you eat it. No for real it's that good. It's like a dish of dreamy noodles slipping around in this golden yellow sauce of the gods!! Yes I like it!!! ahahaha Can you tell!! My fav sushi roll is the spicy volcano. Yummers! The seaweed salad is chilled and seasoned just right and they give you a nice helping of it which is great because sea weed salad is one of my all time fav foods. I ordered fried rice with chicken and vegetables and it was flavorful although I will definitely be requesting spicy next time instead of mild. I also ordered a "bubble drink" which I thought would be Bobba tea but it wasn't, it was a carbonated drink. Next time I'll be looking forward to trying their sushi. I've visited this place several times. I'm Thai, and my in-laws are American who live in GP and I always order here when I have a craving. I've tried almost everything and it's decent. They didn't have the typical papaya salad and my server didn't know what it was (very sad). Sushi isn't fresh, summer roll with chicken is not a traditional summer roll because their chicken is not shredded (dipping sauce is good though), curry paste is from the can, and Pad Thai was bland. The only thing I love here is the Pad Woon Sen, but sometimes they over soak the bean thread noodles so it gives it a mushy texture. Lastly, their spice level is accommodating. My mother consults for many successful Thai restaurants and so I guess I have high standards. But if you're in the area, and are craving Thai food, this place will do alright. Oh, and if it matters to you, because it DOESN'T matter to me..the owners and cooks are of Hmong ethnicity. Ambiance is real pretty though. read more

I particularly enjoyed a "peanut chicken" entree that may have been a special on a recent visit, but was then less impressed with a follow-up dish on a later visit, and can't remember exactly what it was. This restaurant was recommended by employee at Trader Joe's, so I gave it a try. My girl friend and I decided to order Sushi and not the Thai food. The service was good, but the sushi was not anything special at all. We ordered 3 different 'special' rolls and each were very bland. Not that it's a big deal, but the appearance of the Sushi was also disappointing. Came out on plain white plate, nothing special. I have eaten thai food all over the metro detroit area as well as in thailand and I don't understand why people love this place. The waitstaff is extremely nice, the location is very conveniently for people in Grosse Point but the food is quite mediocre. It is certainly worth driving a bit further (St. Clair Shores) to get far better flavor. The only dishes worth getting are the standards and noodles (drunken noodles, pad thai, pad see ew, satay, yum apple salad) which work in a pinch, but not great. I'm a big curry fan and those have been a huge let down every time. Also, make sure if you like spice/heat to order very spicy, their hot is quite mild. Grosse Pointe is always an interesting place to come to when you spend a good chunk of time in Detroit, but we crossed the border anyway to have some dinner at TN Thai. The staff was very friendly and patient with us. Instead of breadsticks, we received a basket of shrimp chips which was a pleasant surprise! We ordered the Curry Noodle with Chicken and the Potato Curry. The food came quickly and the serving sizes were very generous. I think we only finished about a third of each plate and we packed up the rest to bring home for leftovers. My curry noodle was delicious - there was enough sauce to keep the noodles tasty and flavorful. My friend really enjoyed the potato curry and commented on how the potato chunks were very full of flavor - not bland like you would expect with such large chunks. I take the cruise down Jefferson from downtown Detroit (Even though I lived ACROSS THE STREET from Salathai) I place my to go order with the lovely hostesses in the front, and then mosey on over to Trader Joe's or Border's or even the ACE Hardware. It's bigger than you think, with inside an outside seating. Outside seating allows decent people watching opportunities. Inside was pleasant enough. A good size menu, typical Thai offerings, with a couple of more traditional Chinese options. Typical Thai, with the price option of Tofu, Chicken, Pork, Beef, Shrimp. They start you off with the Thai chips - multiple color rice crispy chips. Prices are a little high, but not unreasonable. But the portions were quite large, so much that both the wife and I both took home left overs. The wife went with Pad Thai, with Tufo and mild heat, which was OK, a little bland, and Tufo is tough with Pad Thai - I always think you are better off with a stronger protein. I went with my favorite, Coconut yellow curry with potatoes and tufo, with medium heat. I really like letting the rice soak up the yellow curry. Medium was a little strong, but I could handle it. Occasional specials (like FRESH urchin in the shell) and sashimi treats like scallops and white tuna are outstanding. Thai food is very good, if basic, but oddly, they STILL don't have a gra praow (THai Holy Basil) entree on the menu!! C'mon Tom and Naly--how can you not offer one of the most basic and sublime Thai classics? Please......? Heat level for Thai food is woefully Americanized. "Top of the line" is not even that hot, so order up if you like it hot. This is not Pi's Thai (Hazel Park) in this regard. The full-time staff is fantastic: Tong, Mae, Pater are attentive and always friendly. Co-owner Naly is one of the most gracious hostesses you'll find anywhere. The newer kids need to cut the "deer in the headlights" looks, especially (as another reviewer noted) with special requests. We're VERY lucky to have such a great place in town. read more

Seriously my go-to whenever we do take out. Although this may not be the most authentic Thai food you could have, the freshness of the ingredients certainly makes up for this. The staff is courteous. Portions are very generous. The basil fried rice is delicious. Chicken gang gai is my absolute favorite, I haven't had another restaurants that comes close to this dish. One thing I've noticed is that the flavors are very mild. If you're used to the usual thai spice scale, I'd recommend going one step higher than what you would normally do at other thai restaurants. I normally get medium+ from other Thai restaurants, but here I get at least hot, sometimes extra hot. Overall, love this place! read more

Visited with my husband today for the 1st time. He had the Pad Thai, and I had the Seafood Curry, both Medium Spice. The hubby doesn't like much spice but I do. He ordered Medium as many restaurants really don't spice at all if you ask for Mild. His was a bit too spicy but still ok. Mine had no spice whatsoever...disappointed. I'm not sure if the sauce absorbed the spiciness or what but was still tasty. Would order again if not in the mood for a spicy dish or may try Hot instead. I asked the server, and they don't have any spicy soups whatsoever :( The interior is pleasant & comfortable. Nicer than usual for a Thai restaurant and has outdoor seating. My only real complaint is that the server took our drink order and actually waited (several minutes) till our appetizer was ready and brought everything together. IMO they take avoiding too many trips to a table a bit too far, and they weren't that busy. Despite any issues, it was overall a nice visit and we look forward to our next one. I don't review a lot, but felt like I had to. Payed almost $60 for 2 adult meals, 2 kids meals, one app and 2 drinks for carryout (Covid). Husband picks it up and brings it home, has to wait 15 minutes past the time they told me (I get it, Covid, short staff, things happen). We were given one wrong order, were missing the appetizer and drinks. I went back to get them, no apology, they fumbled for a few minutes and went to the kitchen. I had to wait 15 more minutes. During that time, there was a woman waiting and they completely lost her ticket, one who took a minute to get the order straight because they put the wrong name on it, and a ton of confusion everywhere. I get home, everyone else is done eating, but my husband and son's meals were in the garbage because the food was so bad. He was making a turkey sandwich. I ate about a third of mine and that was it. Spice runs hot, so we order mild and add spice to taste - medium is a gamble that varies from perfect to almost inedible.
