My cousin chose this place while we were waiting for traffic to die down so we popped in to grab some grub to go. Very cozy environment. Cute for a date night or girls night for sure! I ordered the Thai Tea Boba and it came in the cutest cup! I also ordered the crab rangoon (5 pieces) and a new dessert they called the "Chocolate Dream" that came in the little flute. My cousin ordered the vegetable lo mein and the sesame shrimp. She wanted the general tso but doesn't like spicy food, so when she asked for it without the spicy, they said it's basically sesame sauce. Gave this 3 stars because everything I ordered seemed -- subpar for lack of better words. The tea wasn't the typical flavor I'm used to; had an almond-y nature about it. It was still good tho! The crab rangoon tasted more like cream cheese than anything else. Good sauce to accompany it. And then the dessert I thought would give more of a parfait feel but, it didn't. They said it was new so maybe it'll get better. Maybe not. Didn't taste the lo mein but my cousin said it was really good. Did taste the shrimp and it was yummy. Definitely general tso without the spice. To wrap up, like I said, I'm not counting it out. I'll definitely swing back around. Saw some items on the menu I wouldn't mind trying. read more

Came here extremely hungry with a few friends after a long day and we were NOT disappointed. We definitely went overboard with ordering food but no regrets. We absolutely love Sichuan food and what caught our eye was the whole fish in Sichuan broth. An entire fried fish in a hot Sichuan broth. It was numbing, spicy, and incredibly flavorful. The entire fish was fried and sitting in a spicy broth with fried tofu, lotus roots, cauliflower, and a bunch of other veggies. The fried tofu was so good as it soaked up the flavor. The fish had a crisp exterior but still absorbed the spicy broth. This may have been a tad much for just 3 people - but regardless we still finished most of it. This in itself can be easily spit by 4-5 people. The other rockstar of the night was Peking duck. It's been such a long time since I've had Peking duck so when they brought out the thin crepes with sliced scallions and the crispy tender ducks - it was quite a treat and brought back a lot of nostalgia. The crepes were soft and the duck had the classic crispy skin with tender meat. Roll it up with hoisin sauce - immaculate. We also got a spicy pork and cauliflower which was delicious along with spicy wonton - equally good. The zhajiangmian was okay - not like most ones once I have had. Wasn't a huge fan. Wouldn't recommend the bubble tea either. Overall we enjoyed the meal and definitely will return here. The staff was friendly and COVID cautious - everyone wore masks and we were socially distanced. I came here with six other people for dinner so we obviously had to go for the family style experience. Service was pretty quick (not many people there, I guess) and the waiter was nice - he even took a picture for our group and cared enough to direct people for the best possible pose, lol. We ordered six entrees: - Mapo Tofu - Szechuan String Bean - General Tso's Chicken - Double Cooked Pork - Shredded Beef with Fresh Hot Peppers - Basil Eggplant It was hard to sample a lot of everything since I went with very hungry friends, but the Mapo Tofu and Szechuan String Bean stood out the most to me! The tofu was soft on the inside but firm and flavorful on the outside. The sauce/gravy was also really tasty and perfectly spicy so it went well with all the rice I scarfed down. The string beans had the perfect crisp n' crunch with every bite. Flavor and seasoning was on point and there's not much I would change about how this dish came out. If I could eat a whole plate of the string beans by myself, I'd do it happily. This is how we should enjoy our vegetables. Very tasty. Everything else was pretty good, as well! I thought the shredded beef was quite good as well but there was a lot more peppers than there was beef. Only caveat was that it was a bit oily, but it wasn't a bad price for Arlington either! We each paid about $16 for a food belly and good experience. Would definitely come here again for a family style meal with a bigger group of friends (5-6 is a good size). read more

This restaurant used to be so good! I ordered hot and sour soup, mapo tofu and dumplings. I ordered directly through their website on a Tuesday night and it took over an hour and a half to get the food. The quality of the food was noticeably different and over salted. The food lacked flavor even when warmed back up since everything arrived cold. I'd recommend going elsewhere for Chinese food, as this was a complete waste of $40. read more

Singapore noodles and Chicken Curry had no spice and not much flavor (despite being billed as spicy). Hot sauce helped the chicken curry - the noodles were beyond help. It wasn't awesome . . . Best local Arlington Chinese restaurant that has "American-style-Chinese Foods *and also-* traditional Chinese dishes. We love the crispy beef and both the orange chicken and general Taos chicken are great. Favorite appetizer is the spicy wonton (which apparently you can only order for dine-in). And you can request alterations or extra spicy; which is nice. Oh, the cucumber salad is fantastic, you will not regret including this small appetizer as part of your dining experience. Pros: Diverse menu: The menu here seems to be very diverse -- they have over-rice meals, seafood, chicken, and many different noodle dishes. Speedy Service: Service is speedy, and accurate-- they always get the order correct, and get it to you with lots of time to spare. Delivery options! TNR cafe offers delivery options on many major food apps, and is very quick with regard to preparing your food and getting it over to you. I live in the district (NW), and they will deliver to me, which is great! Reasonable prices: Most of the entrees seem to go for about $12 here, which I find to definitely be reasonable, especially compared to prices of similar restaurants in this expensive area! Rolls and appetizers come in around $6. Delicious Boba tea! The boba tea here is amazingly flavorful. I had the mango bubble tea (see picture). In addition to being tasty, the cup it is in, and general presentation was so pretty as well! Cons: It is hard to think of a "con" for this spot! We've dined at TNR twice now and it has become my favorite option for Chinese food in the immediate Arlington/Alexandria area. The food is best described as American Chinese in style, but there are more plentiful choices than one would usually expect to see. And by that, I don't mean a menu which has 300 different entries, 80% of which overlap with minimal individuality...it's just a really diverse menu with a lot of great selections. Plentiful vegetarian dishes and also gluten free choices as well. We've had the crispy shredded chicken (fantastic! lightly breaded and full of hot tangy flavor), pineapple fried rice, sizzling shrimp and scallops (just the right balance of spice and savor), and salt and pepper shrimp. Full bar with excellent deals on happy hour drinks, a surprisingly robust selection of bourbons (all very reasonably priced), and house cocktails. Great option for Chinese food in the Arlington area! The ambiance here is really great, they have nice decor and it feels very clean. Our group of four ordered 3 main dishes and 2 orders of dumplings to start and it filled us all up really well with leftovers to take home. The dumplings were decent size and tasted really juicy, it had a crispy bottom that I really enjoyed. For main dishes we ordered the pork with garlic sprouts, garlic eggplant and crispy beef. The pork was our favorite with it being super flavorful! The crispy beef also had a really nice crunch to it and the garlic eggplant was spicier than anticipated but also had a great sauce to it. read more

Kinda disappointed since I order Chinese from TNR all the time but recent general tso chicken has been just made me 75% flour and 25% chicken. I had a shrimp and green bean dish which was the perfect dish for me as it was healthy yet filled with flavor. I also had a pork dish which was a bit heavier, but soaked in a slightly spicy Chinese gravy which made the dish very irresistable when eaten with white rice. We originally wanted to try the Peking Duck and Soup dumplings because people would go crazy for it on Instagram, but instead, went with the owners recommendations. We got the fish in spicy peppercorn sauce - not the usual type of thing we order, but my girlfriend and I loved it. We love spicy! We also got to try one of their new cold-cut beef dishes. I had mixed feelings/expectations coming into TNR Cafe since the reviews looked a little lackluster, but I was very surprised! My roommate and I came for dinner on a weekday and there were a few tables of people eating in, but it wasn't crowded by any means. Takeout looked busy as there was a steady line of to-go bags on the counter. We ordered the wonton soup, pan fried crispy noodles with shrimp, szechuan string beans, and basil chicken. My roommate had the wonton soup and liked it, but it was only two wontons for $4. The szechuan string beans and pan fried crispy noodles came out next and were both quick to come out. The string beans were fantastic - very flavorful and quite spicy, to my delight. I wish there were a few more beans for $14, but they were very good. The pan fried crispy noodles were alright - I felt that the sauce was lacking a little bit in flavor, although perhaps that was because I tried it immediately after trying the very flavorful string beans. The basil chicken took a while to come out, but it was a huge plate and definitely worth the wait. You could tell it was fresh out of the fryer, and the spice coating was delicious. I would give this place a solid 4 . The service was great and the server was very attentive. The only thing I had an issue with and what was keeping them from getting 5 was the fact that I ordered the bao bun with duck as an appetizer and it came super cold. The bun itself wasn't warm and moist but rather tasted like it was pre-made and just re-heated. Everything else tasted great!! I'm total we ordered the beef and broccoli, walnut shrimp, egg drop soup, duck bao buns, 2 orders of the beef skewers and Mochi ice cream for dessert. Best bite: I looove their orange chicken. Portions are huge and I swear this dish gets better with age. The sauce becomes spicier and more flavorful as the days go on. We ordered seared pork dumplings, Szechuan string beans and kung pao chicken. The dumplings had a crispy sear with a juicy and flavorful filling. I placed an order for the general tso, no veg in the fried rice. I've been ordering here for months and have gotten the same thing each time. They took my order and wrote no veg on the fried rice, as I'm allergic. I get my order and the rice has veggies so I take it back and then the manager, I believe, proceeds to tell me that I can't get the rice w/o veggies even though I've ordered it on numerous occasions and I even came a few days ago and got the same thing.
